Turkeys in the driveway...ants in the fire wood.....

At "The Place".......
The hen turkeys that we had been seeing in the spring and summer did produce poults...looks like 4 in the group.

They were in the driveway this morning ....hoping DW cell phone photo came out at all...thru the window screen...LOL

Splitting the fire wood I had chunked up 2 summers ago......plenty of ant nests....NOT fire ants.....Hummmm.
Not going in the wood pile just yet.

Any tips on getting them under control?

For the ants......are they carpenter ants?

No, these are smaller almost fire ant size, but bark brown/black.....one nest had winged ants coming out....and they do bite.
I gonna just keep these pieces separate, away from everything and burn in the fire pit.

Have had pieces in the past with the carpenter ants......those get tossed in the brush away from everything.....Bad news!

Actually I was kinda being factitious on the subject of the ants....have had all sorts of buggy stuff in the wood over the years and is kinda part of storing old wood...LOL

Turkeys are back today, eating grasshopper in the drive way and don't seem to mind the dogs much.
....and all seemed to be there, big hen, 2 smaller hens, and four poults......was wondering as the yotes were howling up a storm at about 5 A.M. this morning....real close.

No need for a front porch blind, you just shoot through the screen and replace it next year when the 'skeeters get bad.

I have one panel on the back porch that I have replaced 4 times.

Present score is a deer, three groundhogs, about 5 'coons and one load of #8 shot in a Rottweiler's butt. Rottweilers have two speeds, "I am a Rottweiler and I don't give a crap" speed, and "I didn't know about the shotgun!" speed

You can't hardly see the holes where the .223 went trough, but that #8 shot left a hole you could put your thumb through.

Finding wild turkeys in the yard is always fun.

Yeah, I hear ya on the porch....
So far 3 ground hogs, 2 deer (I didn't shoot the deer) and a turkey managed to get in the way of porch target practice.

Funny one was a 19 pound tom turkey on a rainy (heavy drizzle) about 7:30 a.m....while having coffee...and taking target practice off the porch.....hunting partner was still sleeping...was kinda surprised by the 12 ga blast...waking him up.....still laugh about that one.

Soooooo....Today went looking for my chimney sweep rods.....and the shop vac in the shed.

Had made kinda mess with the wood splitter and ants the other day, so decided to vacuum up my mess before heading back up to the house to clean of the stove a chimney.

Hit the switch...and shredded up paper towels started blowing out of the motor on the vac......mouse nest...so started sucking the paper as it's blowing out...here comes 4 mice...looked like mom and 3 babies ....up the hose.
One little guy hung on for a couple of seconds....then up the tube he goes.....Bhohahaha.

Finished up....shut it off....big mouse comes out of the end of the hose and gets away...in the shed.
Took the tub out in the field and dumped it out....three mice still kinda moving...left then there.

Always something.....LOL.
On to find the rods....then do my clean up.

Yup....sit down on a block of wood....one with out the ants, pop a Brewski, and eat the ham sandwich....love foraging.

Anyway, used the maul to bust up the two ant colony logs this afternoon.
Took the Shop Vac. apart, cleaned out the last of the mouse nest....guess I need new rods, never did find them....yet.

Sure, any suggestions are always welcome.....and want to keep them out of the cabin.

They are still in those blocks of wood, but I think I busted up the nests pretty good.......even after being split, so won't be stored on the porch.

Need to split up the rest and see if there are more.....I suspect I do.

"in the blocks of wood" suggests carpenter ant and would not be the same treatment. In the spring (March) start with Talstar granules, drop a pound with a hand spreader all along the outside perimeter, save whats left for next year.

If ants are not currently in your house, I would advise strongly to not use attractants and baits inside your home. If they are already there - whole nuther story.

We had the little red ants in the kitchen earlier, and used the bait tabs......seemed to work....Haven't seen any lately.

With 16 acres, several wood piles, fields and such...I don't think treating for ants everywhere is practical......I'll just keep the wood piles away for the house.

Here is how to tell OLD SCHOOL. Carpenter ants have galleries. They do not consume the wood they throw it out as sawdust aka frass. They are Polymorphic and as the years go by they can get to1& 1/4 inches about 7years. Odorous House Ant - smells like something like cardamon with cinnamon when crushed and never get any bigger.
Citronella Ants like it deep in dirt and when crushed smell like citronella & are reddish yellow.

Let's go back to Odorous for a moment.... They like to set up their colonies in insulation between joists and in the attic and love to live in the wall, where food, water and shelter are all nearby. just because there is an ant trail outside, don't assume that they are in the ground invading the house. They may be in the house and traveling outside to bring in more food. (proteins and sugars) Odorous Ants are big pollinators, by accident. Spraying them over time is a natural disaster. The Queen is no dummy, in a 100,000 ant colony some 80% lets say serve the Queen, 5% actually scavenge your counter-tops for food. Spraying too much can split the colony over the course of months, and suddenly they are back and you now have two nests, later four in the walls. So yes. Modern Bait is best. Feed the ants - they take it back to feed the Queen and she dies... end of colony.

Soooo....Moving on to winter preps.

Cleaned out the wood stove, and chimney this morning.....bought 4 new rods for the brush....and of course, as soon as I started cleaning. found the other three I had been looking for.....LOL
So now I may just take the new ones back.....I knew that would happen.

So, creosote out of the chimney, actually wasn't so bad, but piece of mind knowing what the inside looks like BEFORE winter and using stove time.

Also check under house, all heat tapes seem to be working....only use one on the drain trap for the shower....and no leaks.
Tossed out a bucket of mouse and rat poison....where dogs can't get to it....so everything seems ready for winter.

Replaced windows last summer, so no need to put up plastic any longer.

Just need to split the wood...and maybe buy a load....getting harder to cut and split my own these days.

Anyyone prepping for winter yet?

I'll bet you could trade that unit to someone for a good sized pile of wood!

I have two trees in the front yard that need to come down but I am not the one that will do it! BIG TREES!!! Two days worth of tree cutting!

At that age where I could still get them on the ground but could not guarantee that I would get them cut up and cleaned up before the heart attack occurred or the back put me in the hospital. Either way, I am sure there would be a trip to the hospital involved if I started the chain saw and tore into those trees.

I woke up to temps in the high 40s this AM. Turned on the space heater to knock the chill off and realized I had been running the AC at full bore just yesterday. Walking around the house was contemplating the window situation and such, so I suppose I am prepping for winter too.

Yup, the little HF splitter is wearing me out.....thought that it would die the first year.....still going...
Got 2 tractor buckets full and decided to take a break.

Sadly seems a lot of the rounds are turning punky, but some were just cut and piled up... with a cut end down in the dirt......(my helper, oh well).
Still about 20 feet of trunk, 30"+ dia. laying in the ravine....that I had been working on....before the surgery....hate to loose that wood, but not sure if I can still cut it up.

Gotta head back to the city to pay some bills, mow grass....then back out in a week or so.... for Applefest ...this is a BIG apple growing area.

Also the neighborhood "group" is having the end of the year canoe trip, cook out, trail rides, BS around the fire, and generally comparing notes for all the seasonal and year around residents....at the end of the month.

Had to fill one of the 30 gal propane tanks and change the batteries in the fireplace remote. Pretty much wore me out but now I'm good to go! My cutting, chopping, stacking, cleaning, hauling days are over.

We have slowed down on the food canning(jarring), drying, ...still do some freezing.
But I hear ya.......like stacking money in the bank ....full shelves of food.

Lately, the treat has been a Saturday Farmers market trip....so I can buy 4 different kinds of pickles...instead of canning one kind......

Stopped down to the neighbors place yesterday afternoon for a visit......DW brought down a big pot of home made soup.

He has had a bad time with dementia and complications of diabetes, few other things....
She has been taking care of him w/help....and keeping up the farm as best as she can.
Still keep a cow and steer (the son) so they still have a USDA Farm number, for taxes.
Cows are gonna die of old age.....500 pound lawn trimmers.

She was cleaning out a spot in the garage, when we got there and lamenting that everything seemed to be fighting her....and had to fix each tool or pick up knocked over things at every turn......

The seems to be a pattern.

She says, "All this work used to be easier when I was younger (she's 75)....and all these tools were new......now we are all older and don't work so well any more....LOL"......
No ship!

So maybe I just sell "The Place", and tools, trailers, boats, tractors, gear,....and move into a condo, retire from all the out door stuff....and go have coffee every morning at Micky D's.

I played 36 holes of golf yesterday and the forecast heat index was 105. LOL Not much thought on winter down here.
Probably look for the wind breaker in mid December. So, I can have it ready for that day that almost always comes in January. Hell, what was it like 5 or so years ago we had 3 DAYS of winter!

Now, mind you it wasn't winter all day long. Mostly early in the AM. But, 3 days! I almost put on long pants once!

We have a relatively new problem in South Florida that pose a real hazard on the golf course. Egyptian geese and their droppings on the greens.

Their is a population of geese that hang out around the tee box on hole three. I'll take a picture or video next time I go to that course. Sometimes as many as 50 geese all hearded in the one spot. Probably see 100 or so each round. Mix in the flock of white ibis and then the Muscovy ducks and you got a preponderance of poo.

Now, before any one says I am getting off topic. Turkeys on the driveway and geese on the thing you drive from? Pretty freakin on topic.

We have geese on the golf courses here as well....and on the city courses....LOL........not allowed to carry your goose gun either.
Actually the bunny huggers got all irate about the goose poo in their pools and lawns....Guess they don't hug geese.

Along with the turkeys, the geese have been in the hay field next door, and well as the storks.

Was talking about log splitter problem in the "Gas thread".....and did get the neighbors log splitter going.....so today we finished splitting my pile of oak rounds.

Was surprised to see how many of the rounds were starting to get punky.....
Had some for a live trees that was cut by the power company on the right-a-way...and were in really good shape after a couple of years of being in pile.
Last years surgery caused them to lay around for almost 2 years.

Now the other rounds (30"" were from a dead fall in my ravine...that were getting the punky.

Also some were stacked on end instead of on the side, and seemed to suck up moisture.....hastening the break down.

Loaded up the Harbor Freight trailer up to the top withn splits....them hauled it up the hill to the cabin....
Neighbor took a vid of me with the 4 wheeler almost not making it up the field....pretty funny.

Sooo, if he, another geezer figures out how to e-mail me the vid fro his phone....should be hilarious.

Was close to a "FAIL"......

Will try this.......loaded trailer being pulled up the hill, almost didn't make it all 4 wheels slipping....LOL
