View Full Version : your first semi-auto centerfire rifle

I was thinking about this the other day, seen a lot of first rifle threads but don't remember any first semi-auto rifle threads. In Kentucky I would carry a couple rifles in the rack that went over the back window of my pickup truck. I remember thinking that it would be neat to have a h&k 91 to stick in that rack. I figured the old boys sitting on the bench in front of Wilson's dry goods would have got a kick out of it. Back then owning a h&k was about as far away as a million dollars, it wasn't going to happen.
Anyhoo, my first high powered semi-auto rifle was a sks. I picked it up at a show in east Tennessee, probably in 1990 maybe 1991. I never had much use for a semi-auto but if it goes bang all is good. Come to think of it other than my father's camp carbines, I have not owned a commercial centerfire semi-auto rifle.

After being in the service and firing numerous semi/full auto rifles I did not have a great compulsion for fast firing rifles for three decades or more.
I was always on more of an accuracy search and the semi-auto platforms did not offer a base for that search.
I found an SKS at a ridiculous low price a couple of years back, bought it and played with it for a year. People say they are more accurate than an AK. People are wrong!
It shoots as good as my Winchester 94, so I took it hunting.
More have followed but we are not keeping count. I buy them now just to pi$$ off TPTB. Every time that background check goes through they need to hear a little bell ring.

Remington Model 81 in 300 Savage. My father got it in a trade when I was about 13. I had been wanting a Savage Model 99 real bad for several months because a friend of mine got to use the one his dad owned and I thought it was so much cooler than my 30/40 Krag that had been cut down into a "Sporter". I talked my father into letting me buy it from his store. He had $85 on it and I got him down to $75. I had to "work off" $40 of that because I did not have that much in cash. I sold that gun the week before I joined the Navy for some insane reason. It was a great rifle, very accurate and I used it to successfully take 4 Oklahoma Whitetails and many coyotes. It had a Redfield peep sight mounted on the back of the receiver. Great rifle.

Stared hunting with my FIL back in the 60's after DW an I got married.
MF was always working for the DNR ...so was tied up during hunting season.
FIL was a disabled paraplegic vet, but loved the out doors, and hunting.
One of the rifles he bought back when was the Ruger .44 mag carbine, had a scope....and used it a couple of years...and had a bad habit of trading them in for low money...and buying a new rifle.
I got wind of this and offered to buy it for the same money they would have given him in trade.
So I was the proud owner of the carbine....till MF saw it...and decided with his bad eyes, and getting old.....this little Ruger carbine might be just what the DR ordered.....
Didn't get it back for many years when he passed.
I had always hunted with a single shot, bolt gun or my favorite at the time a Winchester '94....so when I got it back.....and hunted with it at 17 degrees below zero...and wouldn't chamber a round.....I quit using it myself, so DW could hunt with it.
Has been passed on to DD (and maybe GS)....so has been around a while and has taken a few deer.
Ironically, the rifle that my FIL was going to trade it in for early 1970's......Remington 742 30-06..... has found it's way into the safe from him.... to a BIL... to me.....
Yeah, got caught up in the MBR Black rifles movement AR's... and a Yugo SKS for cheap and fun......But still a bolt and SS guy.
Not gonna count the Ruger 10/22's and Marlin Mod 60's....and M&P .22 toys....

Hunter,
I love hunting with a single shot also! This one is great if I am hunting from the back a of a horse or if it is going to be a short walk. It weighs 11.9 pounds empty but man is it a sweet shooter.

Then everyone can get back to the spray and pray offerings.
Fist semi auto was an SKS and the second one was an SVT40.
Up in Canada they were talking about banning both because the far left "thought they looked scary" so I rushed out and bought one of each. Turns out they tried to push it through but they would of made instant criminals out of a few million law abiding civilians so they decided it was best to keep the guns non-restricted so they could keep gouging us for taxes each year.

First, as with Old GI, was a "loaner" from Uncle Sammy, the late, great, M1 Garand. The next was a pristine Remington 742 .308 Win. With a 4x Weaver 'scope, it was very accurate and took down Mule deer with no problem at all.

Just when you get the sear, which is a rectangular block of steel, polished down to the point where the trigger smoothes out you have reduced the length of the sear to the point that it will no longer release the hammer.
The design is just plain weird and not fun to play with.

My first semi-auto was a Ruger 10/22. I'd have to get the receipt but around '78 maybe. Shotguns were all I used from the '60s and some of them were single shot. I was eating back then, not prepping. If I would have had a semi auto frog gig I would have been in heaven. First center fire was my RRA in 5.56.

My first semi-auto was a Marlin model 60. My first center fire semi-auto were a few AK variants just as the Clinton era was making its mark on the industry. While I wish I had kept one or two of them, the money was needed at the time and they sold for about 4X what I paid for them.

my story pretty much mirrors yours, with the exception of the "hunting" part. In PA hunting regs, Semiauto rifles and handguns are not permitted.
I picked up a "like new, never issued" Yugo SKS for $80 at a gun show many MANY years ago. Took a few dozen hours to get the Cosmoline out of it. While no, it's certainly no tack driver, I can keep groups of about 2" at 150 yards using the worst 7.62 ammo available [Wolf]. The groups tighten up a bit if I use the newer Tula ammo, but not by much.
That said, exactly how accurate does a military relic, hunting rifle or defensive weapon really need to be? The reason my issued body armor has a pair of 8" x 12" rifle plates should explain that pinpoint accuracy is not absolutely needed to exact a fatal defensive wound. Likewise in a hunting rifle, a whitetail deer's heart is about the size of a human fist. That's some wiggle room to get an ethical kill with a heart shot [which is about 4-6" in diameter].
The AR on the other hand.....is something else. Incredibly accurate out to 300 meters on a bench rest [my free-hand is not so good at that distance LOL]. Using M855 Ball, I get 1 MOA on the bench and probably 50 MOA freehand LOL. As I have not a need to practice outside 300 meters, I've never taken a shot further than that. IMO, anything further than 300 requires a precision rifle with stronger ballistics and better glass [than I have].

Actually most AR rifles are not exceptionally accurate off the rack. They have developed a reputation for accuracy due to the aftermarket parts that are available as snap on components.
You put a precision forged upper with a match grade barrel on for $1000, then drop a $300 hammer/trigger in place and use precision reloads and yea, you have a good target rifle. Those magnificent groups you hear about are bought and paid for, just as they are with any other rifle.
Rack grade rifles shooting military ammo provide the standard expectation of 2-3 inches at 100 yards if you have the benefit of a scope.

I guess I don't consider accuracy a major requirement for a auto loader or semi auto rifle/pistol.....nice but not the major goal.
That's what bolt guns and single shots are for.....so that's kinda why I put up with the Mini 14 as my coyote gun, till the original owner wanted it back.
When hunting...most anything after the first 2 shots are expensive noise anyway.

I never said I bought an 'off the rack' AR...and I don't know about anyone else but I built an extremely accurate firearm for under $650. $755 if you include the scope. Anyone can with patience and a good measure of self control. The trick is to NOT put 25 lbs of crap on the rifle.
As you said, invest in the quality parts that matter...barrel, BCG, upper, buffer + spring and a free-floated hand guard. The only "add-ons" I have on it are sling, glass and light. Hell, my FCG is nothing greater than milspec...which smooths out after about 800 rounds. I lightly polished mine before I dropped it in. Works great.
Bipods, ridiculously long hand guards, holo-sight AND magnifier, angled fore-grips, lasers, magazine couplers...all those other gadgets are simply gimmicky. All a waste of good money and much needed energy [that's expended humping that thing around]. The reason I say "gimmicky" is that the 'best' gadgets in the world won't necessarily help the worst shooter. I could spend $4K and put a Swarovski scope on my .308.......but it wouldn't help my son-in-law, who can't hit the broad side of a barn with a shotgun at 4 paces.
.......and ^^ that's bad news for the tacticool crowd.
It can be done - but it takes a good amount of research to do it correctly and cheaply.

Actually most AR rifles are not exceptionally accurate off the rack.
Combat weapons are designed to manufactured to an acceptable accuracy. By definition you would need to modify them as stated to be exceptional. Often when you modify them. The tolerances are tighter and the parts may not be as robust as the original.

These modifications add cost to manufacture that are prohibitive. Also, probably don't want 1lb triggers on combat weapons.
Rack grade rifles shooting military ammo provide the standard expectation of 2-3 inches at 100 yards if you have the benefit of a scope.
Kind of sums up the conversation. That you should not expect exceptional results from a combat weapon off the rack. As all the manufacture was aiming for was acceptable results.
So, my question was rhetorical. Kind typing my thoughts out loud.

I guess it depend on your primary usage.
My rifles are hunting rifles by and large.......so auto loaders and high cap magazines are not real important ...to me.
Friend and neighbor out here at The Place is an AR guy...actually so is his wife.....they both build their own (and not just one)...seems it has become a family pastime ...How cool is that?
He has built a 6.5 Grendel for deer hunting....after chasing a couple of not so dead yet deer shot with the .223......and has had good luck hunting and very good accuracy.
Lot of work and money when into his hobby.
Does use 5 round mag's so the don't catch in the brush....(his words)...and so far has 3 kills in 2 years with this set up ....all one shot kills.
So I guess it's what you want to use you weapons for....and how you want to go about it.
I just nod and smile, grab my H&R Handi Rifle in .270 SS...... and head out.

It's been a long time since we had that long thread on "acceptable accuracy". (I can't find that one in the archives)
So many factors involved from number of rounds through the gun, size of game to range and the ever differing shooter ability.
We have a lot of deer killed in my area with the .223, but I remain in the "barely enough power" section on that one. Especially when using the 16" tubes that do not get full velocity out of the cartridge.

I completely agree.
Adding to cost prohibitive, you also have the 'maintenance regimen' to contend with. In a combat weapon, it's a bit unreasonable to have to break that 'precision-built' weapon down every ~200 rounds to ensure it won't fail. Using my Romak AK as an example, I've put 1400 rounds through it without cleaning and it worked fine...but I get haphazard groups at distance. Ammo issues aside the weapon had zero stoppages. I couldn't do that with my AR by any stretch. The most I was ever able to fire without cleaning was 582 rounds, my AR has to be broken down for cleaning...no ifs, ands or buts.
Adding to the accuracy conversation, the AK is marginal at best. Sure, the generally accepted truth is that at 1000 yards, the AK should hit within a 6 foot square box. But to the average person, that's unreasonable because
1. who is going to engage a target at 1000 with a combat infantry weapon, and
2. Why would you when there are better suited weapons to accomplish that goal?
But for hunting game at reasonable ranges, my own thoughts lean toward the .30 of the two. I'm not saying the .223/5.56 can't do the job...far from it. I just prefer the shock-down power of an expanding-tipped .30 as opposed to a .22..........but..........I also want a weapon that's going to have at least a 1-2" group at 100 yards. In that respect any of the firearms we discussed, the AR, AK and SKS, will all accomplish that task. Of the three I own, I would use any of them to hunt deer. [note on 'technicality' of the game law here in PA....I [i]could use a semi auto rifle to hunt big game [b]so long as I render it single shot only. I could not carry in my car or on my person, the magazines for the weapon. It would have to be manually loaded one shot at a time.]

With the simple addition of a blank gas block, or turning a low profile block backwards, and removal of the gas tube you can turn the AR into a straight pull bolt action repeater that should be as acceptable in PA as any other bolt action rifle.
5 and 10 shot magazines are easily obtained.

I also grew up in Penna, with its a***ine ban on semi auto firearms. I never owned a semi auto until I moved to Michigan. I have since owned a Mini 14, a Remington semi in .308, a Browning Semi in 308 and several Ruger 10/22's. Only the 10/22's have been acceptably accurate. I should correct that statement - a Browning 7 mag would shoot sub min of angle with an accubrake ( and my SIL talked me out of it). Since only the one Browning met my accuracy standards, I am a bolt action fan. I never have cared for single shot rifles, but the lever actions I have owned have been accurate enough for me. Now handguns are another case altogather. I have found pretty equal accuracy with both semi autos and revolvers.(I am not a target shooter)

Thanks, I know - but I have firearms more suited to my taste for hunting game. I actually prefer my Remington 760 GameMaster for deer at long ranges and my .32 Winchester Spl. for a brush gun.

The only "ban" on semi auto rifles in PA are that they are not to be used for hunting game under PAGC rules. As a matter of State Law though, there's no 'ban' on any weapon [outside the NFA Legislation]. Semi auto rifles, shotguns and handguns are perfectly legal in the State, so long as the individual is allowed by law to own and possess them. Generally speaking though, PA has historically been a pro-gun State and is even more so with the passage of Castle Doctrine Law.
Also a bit of information not publicly promoted by the State or even by LE...is that PA is an open carry State. Since there's no Law disallowing the practice, by default it's legal to do so. Is it a good idea? That's up to the individual to decide...but it's legal to do if the citizen chooses to do it. If a PA citizen chooses to open carry, be wary of what the State considers to be "concealed." Walk around town and you are fine/within the law...but get in your car, in a cab or on a bus and it's considered concealed. If you have no CCW then you are in violation of Law. Look to Title 18, 6106 for the full text of the Law: http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/LI/consCheck.cfm?txtType=HTM&ttl=18&div=0&chpt=61&sctn=6&subsctn=0
Regarding disallowing semi auto rifles in hunting - IMO I completely agree that it's stupid....because a hunter may use a semi-auto shotgun [plugged @2+1] and some rifled shotgun barrels are as...or are even more accurate than some deer rifles I've seen. Also, manual loading rifles may be loaded to capacity...so my 760 can use 5 and 10 round magazines AND have them loaded to capacity.
So I may rapid pump-fire up to ten 180 grain .30-06 rounds down range, you can have three semi auto fired, 1.5 ounce rifled slugs coming your way...just as accurate and just as deadly as any semi auto rifle made [but the semi rifle is disallowed]. It's just stupid IMO.

Unlike some of you (ahem...Rick) who bought their first semi-auto before I was born...I just recently purchased mine. Just this last March with Tax return money. It is an AR-15 that I put together myself. So far it runs great and shoots better than me...and much better than my son. We haven't taken it past 100 yards yet, but will. My only goal is to hit my 10" diameter steel target at 300 yards. To me, that is pretty amazing. When I would qualify in the Army, I could barely see the 300 meter target, so forget about actually hitting it. I just shot twice at the 250 meter one instead.

There should also be a note as to the terms in use.
One "runs" an AR
One "shoots" a single shot!
And in my experience the third slug is the one of final frustration with no real hope connected to its use. Even a wounded deer is out of slug range by the third shot.
Yeah, that third shot is usually in conjunction with, "Son of a .... BOOM".

Not exactly sure how Y'all feel about Old Threads? But I don't remember the Nylon66 being a center fire semiautomatic!
Now as a Navy Guy perhaps the reputation for rifle shooting isn't first rate? But the first semiautomatic center fire rifle I ever shot was provided by Uncle Sam, and it wasn't in .22 caliber. Guess I did okay with it because the CNO sent me to USMC Rifle Training where they gave me a bolt action rifle. When I finished USMC Rifle Training the Navy gave me a scoped M14NM to run a muck with. The best part of a semiautomatic is that you can shoot one at a time, or even have a real quick follow up shot if you didn't make the first round count. Now as my screen name implies, I have a little experience with the 7.62 NATO. I read that Military Semiautomatic rifles aren't that accurate. Did anyone bother to notice that the USMC uses that Old M14NM accurately to 912 Meters? I do have a predilection to discriminate against plastic/polymer rifles chambered in Rodent reduction calibers on an actual Battlefield. Spray and pray is fine if I can toss a rock and hit you, but a "Battlefield Rifle" needs to be able to reach out and touch you beyond the 800 meter mark. Just the musings of an Old Curmudgeon.

Winchester 100 in 284. Loved the caliber, hated the rifle.

AK. Still buried out in the swamp as part of my brief TEOTWAWKI phase.
Oh, man. Now I have this vision of a dinosaur toting an AK. I'm not even got put that on the list.

Everyone's first rifle should be an AK!
You can't make it not work
You can't break it
You can't wear it out in a normal lifetime
It's nearly as cheap to shoot as a .22.
You can kill anything on the planet with it if you have a full magazine.
