Hey all! I'm new to these boards so my apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere. I did a search, but didn't find what I'm looking for.

I have a family of 4. While I am an eagle scout and possess some primitive skills through years of practice, having a family that I will care for only makes survival more difficult. My intent is that if I have to take them off the grid, I will build a strong mud hut w/ fireplace and build a localized water filtration system as my greatest priorities. What I don't want to have to worry about initially is food. My thought is that I would carry up to 4 weeks of prepackaged dehydrated meals to ensure we are all eating and I'm able to get enough calories/protein/fat to get through the initial days of intense work. I know there are several companies out there and haven't tried any of them. Hoping I can get some suggestions from those who know this stuff better than I. Price, weight, serving size, and shelf life are all equally important. Flavor, well it'd be nice if it doesn't taste like cardboard.

Those who have experience with Wise, Mountain House, and other companies... what is your favorite of the companies and why? Thanks in advance!

Pinto beans and rice. Beef bouillon, Chicken bouillon. Much cheaper, much less bulky. But you will need water. Oh and by the way Welcome to the forum. Spend lots of time reading here before you spend any money on your plan. What circumstance to you see that would require you to "take them off the grid"? exactly. I would be able to give a much better answer to the question with that in mind.

firstoff welcome ,no how old are the kids have they or the wife
ever lived in such a manner as you propose?
why 4,wks of food what do you plan to eat after that?
childrens dietary needs are differrent from adults.

the idea that such a abrupt change in diet for the kids for a month or more
does not sound like aa good idea. might want to putby some mild laxitive
when they bind up from the food. and why would you need to go off grid abruptly anyhow?

Hunter63 saying Hey and Welcome.
There is an intro section at :
http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?14-Introductions

If you care to stop by and say Hello.

Good advice has been offered so far....and would suggest getting some trial size samples of what ever you may use and try them out.

Your grocery store also has freeze dried and dehydrated food that taste pretty good.... Knorr being one example.

Try out what you think you might want to use BEFORE you need to.

Appreciate the responses. :)

It's not that I necessarily WANT to get off the grid, but I'd like to have bags ready and skills developed in the event something happens that makes threatens my family, even if it's a secondary fallout from a catastrophe.

I have two children that are 2 and 5. My thought behind having up to 4 weeks of food is it allows us to get where we feel safe (even if it means walking) and should provide us enough food for me to concentrate almost exclusively on an easily renewable water solution, and a shelter that would survive for months without requiring significant repairs/modification, THEN food.

Have you ranked your threats from most likely to least likely? The best way to start out is to identify what you believe are your most likely threats. Rank them from most likely to least likely and begin by trying to mitigate the most likely first. For example, you might consider house fire as one of the most likely so you would want to make certain you have smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, house or renters insurance at an appropriate level, pictures or video of the inside of your home and stored in a safe place, planned evacuation routes, planned meeting place outside, etc. Doing that will give you the biggest bang for your buck and spend your resources on the things you are most concerned about. Complete the first item on the list then move on to item 2. You'll find that many of the things you did for item 1 will probably apply to item 2. As you get further down the list your preparations will become easier because many of the previous items will overlap into subsequent items.

I would suggest that running off to the woods to build a mud hut is probably very low on your real list of threats.

Here's a list you can work with:

Biological Threat: A biological attack is the deliberate release of germs or other biological substances that can make you sick. Many agents must be inhaled, enter through a cut in the skin or be eaten to make you sick. Some biological agents, such as anthrax, do not cause contagious diseases. Others, like the smallpox virus, can result in diseases you can catch from other people.

Chemical Threat: A chemical attack is the deliberate release of a toxic gas, liquid or solid that can poison people and the environment.

Dam Failure: A dam failure or levee breach is a catastrophic event characterized by the sudden, rapid, and uncontrolled release of impounded water.

Earthquakes: An earthquake is the sudden, rapid shaking of the Earth, caused by the breaking and shifting of subterranean rock.

Explosion: A release of mechanical, chemical or nuclear energy in a sudden and often violent manner with the generation of high temperature and usually with the release of gases.

Extreme Heat: An extended period of high temperatures often accompanied by high humidity.

Fire: A state, process or instance of combustion in which fuel or other material is ignited and combined with oxygen, giving off light, heat, and flame.

Flood: Refers to the overflowing of normally dry areas, often after heavy rains. Flood is usually applied to the overflow of a great body of water, as, for example, a river, although it may refer to any water that overflows an area.

Hazardous Material: Any substance or mixture of substances having properties capable of producing adverse effects on the health and safety or the environment of a human being.

Hurricane: A severe tropical storm that forms in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Influenza Pandemic: A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza A virus emerges for which there is little or no known immunity in the human population and the virus begins to cause serious illness and then spreads easily person-to-person worldwide.

Landslide/Debris Flow: Landslides, also known as mudslides and debris flows, are the downward falling or sliding of a mass of soil, detritus or rock on or from a steep slope. They can be caused by a variety of factors including earthquakes, storms, and fires.

Nuclear Threat: An explosion with intense light and heat, a damaging pressure wave and widespread radioactive material that can contaminate the air, water and ground surfaces for miles around. An event typically recognized with an attack by a foreign power.

Nuclear Power
Plant Emergency: An accident comprised by the release of radioactive material from the plant into the environment, usually characterized by a plume (cloud-like formation) of radioactive gases and particles. The major hazards to people in the vicinity of the plume are radiation exposure to the body from the cloud and particles deposited on the ground, inhalation of radioactive materials, and ingestion of radioactive materials.

There are two “emergency planning zones” in the event of an accident. One zone covers an area within a 10-mile radius of the plant, where it is possible that people could be harmed by direct radiation exposure. The second zone covers a broader area, usually up to a 50-mile radius from the plant, where radioactive materials could contaminate water supplies, food crops, and livestock.

Radiation Threat: A radiation threat, commonly referred to as a "dirty bomb" or "radiological dispersion device (RDD)", is the use of common explosives to spread radioactive materials over a targeted area. It is not a nuclear blast. The force of the explosion and radioactive contamination will be more localized.

Terrorism: The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.

Thunderstorm: A transient storm of lightning and thunder, usually with rain and gusty winds, sometimes with hail or snow, produced by cumulonimbus clouds.

Tornado: A localized, violently destructive windstorm occurring over land, esp. in the Mid-West, and characterized by a long, funnel-shaped cloud extending toward the ground and made visible by condensation and debris.

Tsunami: Tsunamis, also known as seismic sea waves, are enormous waves caused by an underground disturbance such as an earthquake or volcanic eruption. They can move hundreds of miles per hour and hit land with waves topping 100 feet in height.

Volcano: A vent in the earth's crust through which lava, steam, ashes, etc., are expelled, either continuously or at irregular intervals.

Wildfire: Any large fire that spreads rapidly and is hard to extinguish.

Winter Storm or
Extreme Cold: a severe winter condition characterized by low temperatures, strong winds, and heavy blowing snow.

Feel free to add anything to this list you think should be included for your family.

Chalaph,
Okay so do you have several possible destinations picked out? How far do you intend to ask your young children to walk? Most all of us that hang out here have given lots of thought to exactly what you are talking about. A lot of us have already raised our family and are now working with grandchildren and great-grandchildren being involved with something like what you are thinking about. Take your time and do some reading. Be patient and stay hooked. Do not give up on this site. You may get some very strong feed back. Just pick out the good stuff and wade through the rest of it. I am a Scout and have been a Scout Master. Lots of Scouters here. again take your time and read the threads.

Chalaph,
Do you take your family camping now? If not I strongly recommend you start. Right now. Don't wait for the kids to get "old enough" Get out in the back yard and teach them how to make a sleeping spot, build a fire, set up an camp kitchen area, how to use a water filter and how to set up the tent! I promise it will be worth it and lots of fun! also they will be working towards your goal of "being Prepared" all the time. Just one rule. "KEEP IT FUN" Do not lose sight of the rule ever.

So far Mountain House has the best flavor of the few I've tried. Wise foods will be vegetarian unless you specifically get the meat based items. If water, time and fuel are an issue and you decide to pack rice and beans then I would suggest some smaller beans like lentils and split peas that cook quickly. Also some pasta like angel hair, and smaller types that cook quickly. Since you have small children having some variety and something they like is important. I'm a big fan of staying put at nearly all costs. But if you seriously think you will have to leave your area some advance planning might help.
if you know the general direction you think you will be heading then possibly cache some food and items along the way. I would not skimp on food in this situation.

Thanks for the warm welcome and feedback thus far.

I take my family camping at least twice a year for a week at a time. My oldest loves it an is already obsessed with the idea of learning to survive with few tools. The Mrs? Well, she's coming around.

I've never been the prepper type. My parents are extreme preppers who own a lot of wooded land where they have built an insulated barn w/ kitchen, sleeping quarters, and bathroom. It is powered with solar panels with diesel generators as backup. They have a garden about half the size of a football field, raise chickens, and have several bee boxes. Lastly, they have a large pond that is fully stocked with fish. I won't even get into their security and weapon systems cause... well, that would compromise security, right? Anyway, it wasn't until Operation Jade Helm that I really became concerned and started drinking the prepper koolaid. Compound what we can read about Jade Helm with some under the table conversations I've had with folks in the military intelligence field... I'm eager to get my things together and fast.

I live in TX hill country (Austin area). This area is surrounded by untouched land that is heavily wooded and full of resources. This is important specifically because my routes North out of this area towards my parents are VERY few and even without any type of emergency are often jammed for sometimes hours. Thus, my thinking that if I have to leave the safety of my house (and ONLY if I HAVE to) and driving isn't an option, I am able to hit the woods and work my way north over time. Ideal? No. But, then again we're all here to consider our preparedness for less-than-ideal situations.

Bought several Mountain House meals of varying flavors so we can see what we like and what the kids will eat before committing to a large purchase of food.

Great to get your young kids accustom to eating a variety of foods at a young age and be adaptable (one of my kids is very picky, partly my fault and partly just her). Rick posted an article about how Mtn House was rated as having the lowest oxygen and therefore best shelf life, this is a good consideration for long term storage just incase something bad happens such as wildfire, flood, loss of power etc.

http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?26647-Mt-House-Foods-vs-The-Other-Guys&highlight=mountain+house

For much shorter term storage I like the dried goods from local grocery like rice, beans, sealed meats (dehydrated or in water but vacuum packed mylar or can). Just label and cycle thru them. Also dry/powder and/or vacuum packed milk, dairy or soy/almond/hemp/rice whatever you prefer which do not require refrigeration. Use these occasionally if you buy from a good source even the liquid may have a shelf life of about 6 months, so cycle.

Great that your parents are extreme "peppers" but this is not necessary in my personal opinion. But I try not to judge others, whatever makes them happy. My mother got very excited about Y2K, it was impossible for me as an Electronic Engineer to explain it to her.

Note that Mtn House and many other meals in mylar vacuum packs and cans are high in sodium this is great for backpacking because those people are generally sweating a lot but if you are just waiting for roads to be fixed and power to be restored not ideal, especially for older people and those with high blood pressure. So consider issues like that. There are multiple sources or just plain dehydrated vegetables, fruits, nuts etc by the pound for a good price or you can prepare your own. The price seems high but consider that fresh contains mostly water, remove that and price per pound might higher for fresh. Then obviously when you eat dry drink a lot of water with it.

Edit: Some people I camp with strongly dislike the wood chip/hockey puck chicken in some Mountain House meals, but you can always add other meats or remove that add more instant rice or potatoes to reduce the high salt (instant requires less fuel), add more dehydrated vegetables from your local grocery story heat up water or all of it in a pot just be creative. If I catch a small fish in a stream I add that, similar for some plants I know are good to eat. Some wild foraged plants and raw fish need to be cooked longer so I do that for a while before opening a Mtn House bag and dumping into my pot. THERE ARE NO SET RULES. So be creative. Some people even add sugar. One friend of mine adds brown sugar to his salsa, I'm like WHAT THE HEY HEY HEY!??? Another adds mayonnaise to her fresh guacamole sauce when we are camping, makes me want to cry but she is a good friend so I just smile thru the tears and eat it without saying anything negative... At campout pot-lucks eat some of everyone's unless you are allergic so no one's feeling are hurt.

Chalaph, I want to first and foremost welcome you to the forums.

When it comes to getting prepared, I agree with Rick for the most part. Start with the most likely scenarios and work you way to the least likely. I started with first aid (injuries are the most common in my house) then followed up with power outage. Power outage is a tough one where I live cause it does get hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Next on my agenda was water outage and food storage in order to prepare for flooding. These three things are the most likely things to happen in my area. Your area might be different and your method of planning my differ than mine based on family needs.

What I have discovered is as I went down the list, all the previous preps play a role in the not as likely areas. For example, I stock food in case food becomes limited due to flooding. A financial crisis occurs and food is needed. Although the food was stored initially for flood prepping, it comes into play on the financial crisis scenario.

Some around here place next to zero possibilities on anything in relation to war on our soil, financial crisis, and governmental take over. I think this is because they are a bit older and have never seen anything in their life, so they figure why would it happen now. The funny thing is, their parents and grand parents experienced the great depression which was a financial collapse! It has happened in our country and could happen again. Same with war and looking at the continuous definite erosion of rights for the last 50 years, government control attempts do not seem to unreasonable. Especially given the comments some government members have made. Besides, you are in TX and probably have a much better idea of what Jade Helm is like compared to some guy in the Midwest.

So in short, start with most likely to least likely events. When you get to the least likely events, they will be mostly taken care of due to previous preps. Ignore the naysayers on what you prepare for, anything is possible.

This is a little off topic put if you compare the Great Depression of the USA beginning in 1929 and the drop in GDP and then its recovery to the current Greek Recession and its long drop in GDP will no recovery in sight... A person wonders if folks over there wish they had a good garden and some chickens, and goats to supplement their food supply when they could not get any money from banks to buy food?

The USA owes a lot to China, they are devaluating their currency so now it costs much more US Dollars to pay back the loans and they cannot afford to buy US goods. Seems like a bad situation. Raising livestock is a PITA, I had some when I was a kid never liked them much my father never liked livestock either but they are useful, especially if you can afford to live far enough from the city to have them.

Chalaph, Welcome to the forum. Its an odd starter as most do not have a Freeze dried machine - so can I say its an expensive quick fix? Hey I do a lot of Beef rounds that I have an expensive food slicer and electric knife to make thin slices. I soak them overnight in Apple cider vinegar - spices - and a favorite hot bbq sauce that cannot contain corn syrup ( makes it too sticky) I then spray the trays with canola non stick on a Nesco Food dehydrator and make it 5 hours on a timer. I turn out pounds of Beef jerky, Chicken and Turkey. One of my favorites is getting a great Chicken Wing Sauce and drenching fresh Chicken Breast and adding a touch of Wrights. I pass it out to my friends at a local restaurant at Happy Hour - the bag is quickly empty.

Jerky is hands down better than anything on the trail short of a Hard Boiled Egg IMO

The real concern for China's devaluation will be debt ridden countries such as Greece. This is another deflationary situation. Wages and profits fall in deflation but debt remains fixed. That makes servicing the debt even more difficult. That's true on both the macro and micro economic scale. If I were a Greek I would be thinking about moving to another country. Preferably a non-socialist, non-communist country.

TXyakr

I agree Rick, the Greek economy is tiny compared to that of USA which is also much more diversified. Also sustainable agricultural is very challenging in much of Texas especially central during a drought so just having food and water stored for a few weeks or months is more reasonable. If your family likes dehydrated food you can prepare larger amounts on trays in your regular oven on wire cooling bake trays, use low wattage light, very small fan, no heat from stove. But may mess up your plans for pizza for 2 nights. ;-)
Besides if you raise some cute little chicks from the local feed store then slaughter and process them on your back porch your wife and kids may never eat chicken again and need years of therapy. Welcome to my mistake. LOL

Extreme Heat: An extended period of high temperatures often accompanied by high humidity.

That's an emergency somewhere? We just call it July and August here.

Flood: Refers to the overflowing of normally dry areas, often after heavy rains. Flood is usually applied to the overflow of a great body of water, as, for example, a river, although it may refer to any water that overflows an area.
Wildfire: Any large fire that spreads rapidly and is hard to extinguish.

Yeah, we call that combination March through June. Sometimes all of the above simultaneously. The local VFDs are used to having to fight wildfires in mud, and drag cars out of flooded ditches in between tornado sightings.

Winter Storm or
Extreme Cold: a severe winter condition characterized by low temperatures, strong winds, and heavy blowing snow.

Or a quarter inch of ice on the roads shutting down all shipping in and out of the area. It was funny a couple years ago when the grocery stores ran out of sandwich bread for three days during a winter storm; I wandered over to the baking aisle, and found it fully stocked with nobody else browsing because they were all too busy rushing to grab whatever stale hot dog buns or other breads the employees had managed to dredge up. Got a big bag of flour, some cornmeal and some yeast, went home, cranked up the bread machine and the oven, and we ate well for the next few days.

Better to make it not such an abrupt change; get them used to rice and beans, or other storable/portable foods a couple times a week so the transition is just a boring menu instead of a completely different diet. For that reason, I'd ditch the prepack stuff and get a vacuum sealer. Come up with some good recipes that can be stored dry and seal them up yourself.
