Ok im ready for the abuse lol currently applying for a foid card i have never owned or used a fire arm always wanted to and I'm finally at a point in my life where i can so my question is what would be a good handgun to start with? I plan on taking classes and doing research just wanted everyone's thoughts on a good starting point thanks in advance

Well, as a "foid card" seems to be an Illinois thing...(you didn't mention where you are).....may want to see if they also restrict type of handguns, magazine capacity and such....

I don't know what your laws are.

Then if just for learning, practice or whatever...may want to look at a revolver.
In the past a .22 would have been my suggestion...but with the continuing shortage of .22 ammo....I gonna change the recommendation a to .357.

That will allow a verity of loads for mild to wild....and actually be useful for many applications. ...and the possibility of re-loading in your future.

I like checking with the ccdw forum website for my state. You should check for an Illinois-based site for better info. I have found that official state websites for anything pertaining to guns can be confusing.

My advice is pretty much the same as Hunter63's then. Keep it simple. In the past I too would have recommended a 22 revolver. If the availability of 22 ammunition is not an issue in your area I'd still say a 22. If your area is like many, where 22 ammunition is either scarce or cost prohibitive, then the 357 revolver is a good choice for the reasons that Hunter stated.

Learn and practice gun safety. Learn proper shooting technique and then practice, practice, practice.

Im assuming shorter barrels are better for concealed carry and are less acurate at longer distances?

Some of my family and I live in Illinois. 1st, Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the country. 2nd, my brother got a concealed carry permit but wound up shelling out $500 before it was all done. 3rd, a .357 Magnum is a pretty hefty firearm, and I've found places on line that easily sell .22 ammo. we even have a store here that gets various types in. Hopefully, the gun shop you are dealing with has a shooting range. If not, find one that does. You need to handle and live fire the weapon you intend to purchase. You need to shoot different loads to determine what you and the weapon are comfortable with. If you intend to use a weapon as a CCW then you want one that is of a decent caliber to be defensive, lightweight enough to comfortably carry and one that fits well in your hand. Talk to the gun dealer and try different models and calibers. Your dealer should be able to help you make the right choice. If you still have questions after talking to your dealer then try another dealer.

Sarge 47 my question would be do you recommend the 22 over the 357 because im just starting out? Or is it the cost of ammo? I just don't want to buy the 22 and then have to shell out more cash right away for another fire arm

If you can try it out at a firing range, all the better. There are a few gun stores near me that have an indoor range. I am sure they would even help you with learning how to use it.

There will be differing opinions on this I'm sure. Everyone has their favorites. If you are looking at the weapon as a CCW then that's what you need to purchase. Minimum caliber, IMO, is .380 so 9mm, 38/357 and even 45 are good selections. You're next biggest problem will be deciding how to carry it and what holster to purchase. I would bet everyone on here has at least 20 holsters they've tried. I know I have. Like the weapon, it's an individual thing. Sometimes you just have to try a given carry style for a while to decide if you like it and, to a large extent, your carry will be governed by the weapon you choose. I have a Kel-Tec PF9 in .9mm that I simply carry in my front pocket sans holster or I have a small outside the waistband holster for it. In the summer it's usually in my pocket. Again, it's really an individual thing. I don't favor behind the back at all because you can't get to it in a sitting position.

I looked up F.O.I.D. for Illinois so apparently your state does not trust the FFL as if that system has ever failed and allowed a mentally unstable person to buy a firearm and shoot up a movie theater or something... whatever. Seems paranoid to me. In Texas anyone can walk into a shop or gun show and pass FFL check and get one in about 3-5 minutes, as long as they resemble the person on the photo ID.

My best advice is DO NOT BUY ANYTHING until you take a introduction to firearms class at a gun range that is close to where you live and hopefully work as well. If these are anything like where I am they will include passes to the gun range and include gun rentals. A firearm is a very personal item unique to each person. So be sure to try out many in the caliber that seems best for your purposes. (Personal defense, concealed carry, occasionally?). I dislike a gun on my person concealed unless it is really really necessary but that is a personal decision, everyones situation is unique to them.

A 9mm Glock even Gen 3 or "2" is very reliable and fairly light, but not comfortable to conceal. Many similar handguns to Glocks some better some worse. Small .38 revolver is not fun to shoot but very reliable and easy to conceal. Be sure it fits in glove box or where ever you wish to put it in your vehicle, can strap to passenger seat and always have something over it if your state laws allow this. In Texas there are some advantages to NOT having a CHL (Concealed Handgun License, similar to Concealed Carry Weapon Permit, CCW) if you keep a firearm in your vehicle. KNOW THE LAWS!!!

I don't know the laws in your state, but in Texas the CHL class tells you nothing about firearms, how to shoot them, which is best for you, class is only about the laws. In fact if you cannot show that you are proficient with your firearm you fail. So best to take the intro class first and go to a range and practice, even pay a private instructor $30 for 30 minutes of instruction.

BTW Groupon discounts online may look great but go into the actual physical gun range talk to them. They may give you the same or better discount as Groupon coupon. Then with vouchers for gun range and gun rentals the intro class may be almost free. Check it out.

There are a LOT of places to buy cheap ammo online and locally but this place was recommended by the manager of a local gun range, actually the ammo they sold there was fairly reasonable both quality and price which is NOT always the case. I am not a big fan of remanufactured or reloaded ammo but if done well there is no big problem with it. This place sells both new shells and reman:

If your eyes do not glaze over with the boring science of it all you can look thru the charts at this website and compare the Muzzle Energy or "knock down power" between various calibers, firearm barrel lengths and a few different choices of ammo. Many people new to firearms never consider this or they do for 3 minutes,... fall asleep... Watch an entertaining video by Nut-n-fancy instead.

Less accurate and less powerful, look at ballistics by the inch website. If barrel is only 2" much of the gun powder does not even have a chance to burn before the projectile (bullet) exits the muzzle and the energy or "knock down power" is much less, you would be better off with a smaller caliber firearm and a longer barrel perhaps unless you are a very small person wearing summer clothes and must conceal it very well. Sometimes having a slightly obvious bulge could be a good thing. Depends on how you carry yourself. Most people who carry are easy to pick out if you know what to look for especially in the warm summer months. They are the ones sweating in far too many layers and adjusting themselves. If they go to dangerous places a group of thugs could squeeze them in and take it from them. Your behavior and situation awareness is at least as important than the firearm you carry.

Here's an update everyone foid card should arrive in 30 days and taking my first class soon visited 2 gun shops by chose the 2nd one they were more open to answering questions and way more helpful they also have .22 ammunition available for use and sale the other place you can only buy it if you use it in there range

Check around at various ranges in your area for various classes and try-em-out days.
Our state arm of the NRA has classes in their offices and at various ranges where you can try out different holsters and carry methods and learn about your responsibilities as a CCW license holder, and what to do should you ever have to actually use that weapon. I imagine Chicago to be a lot like Boston and depending on what you do or say after an incident determines whether you are felon or victim. Be very aware. And carry a lawyer's card (or two) in your wallet.

I looked up NRA classes in Chicago. Man, those are expensive! But you might want to check into it. See if they have any specials or new member deals.

Others have given you good advice, so I'll try to bring up stuff that the others haven't.

I take it that things are really expensive and hard to find, where you live, so let me ask this........Do you travel very often, or would you like to? Hahaha....I'm just thinking of how easy we have it around here, compared to Chicago, or D.C., etc. What if you took a long weekend and went somewhere that things are cheaper and easier to find. If you could find a place with NRA certified instructors to give some beginner lessons, have a range on-site, and have lots of different handguns for you to try.

The one piece of serious advice I can give, is to not be too worried about the "perfect" gun. What some people love, others hate. You will need to figure out what works best for you. It's a tool and like any tool, it needs to be something that you can use safely and effectively. Some guns may be too big, or too small to fit in your hand comfortably. Some may have too much recoil and some may just have "something" about them that you don't like the feel of. (Or, the "look" of.) Much of this, you won't know until you actually shoot them. (If you can find a range that offers beginner classes, as well as have a wide variety of handguns for you to try, you really will be doing yourself a favor.)

I have changed my original choice of .357 decided to go with a rock island armory xt 22/45 we can practice with .22lr and still have the option of 45 acp they also have kits for .40, 9 and 10 mm so looks like a nice option talked to 2 gun smiths and they had good reviews on ria

I didn't know they had the conversion kits for the other calibers. I've checked their site but didn't find them. I like RIA. I have an AR made by them and it's great. I like the .22/45 concept but would be interested in a link to the kits for the other calibers.

45/22 conversion kits are widely available and have been since the early 1900s. Colt made them at one time. I have a friend that owns a .38super/22 unit with matching serial numbers.

They are now available from Kimber, Sig and several other companies at prices that vary from $200-$400.
