View Full Version : Fun with batteries! or Not?

Pulled out my hand held 40 channel Cobra CB from under the seat of Big Red....

Turned it on....nada, zip, nothing.
Dig out my tester....takes 10 1.5 vdc AA batteries or 15 vdc ....all tested at 1.24+/- a bit.....too low.

Replaced with 10 new batteries....tested at 1.62 on an average...actually all real close (was impressed...how do they do that?)...so over 15 vdc

Anyway...back in business......

So now my question and haven't taken the time to try or make a battery holder.....if 10 batteries @ 1.24 is too low.....12.24 vdc...would adding one or two 1,62 good battery or even 2 low 1.24 batteries....add up to a closer to 15 vdc voltage?

Now my experience with auto batteries....is that they can test 12 volts....with no load.....but drops off under load, dramatically
So I guessing that when these are low, so is the load voltage....so it may not work...or only for a short time.

May have to finds something I can try with out so many batteries just to see if stuff can be used.

I was just thinking about a time when I am away from a new battery source... and need something to work, if only for a little while.

Thoughts or experiences?

I'll be interested to see how your experiment turns out. I believe that with the batteries we currently use that weak batteries will not work (or at least not for very long) under load. Your experience has been mine as well. Kind of like a yipping dog - all volts and no amp.

I think you'll find that you'll draw the new batteries down pretty quickly since they will carry the bulk of the load. That will probably happen in hours not days. Maybe even minutes depending on how depleted the old batteries are. Look into Eneloop rechargable AAs. They hold a charge in the drawer forever and last a long time under use. I've converted all my AA and AAA stuff to Eneloop.

I guess I was just thinking out loud....and as I was packing up the 10 old batteries......The idea of getting caught with a bunch of depleted batteries that could be used to power up a radio or GPS in an emergency.

Old batteries are collected in a coffee can to return to a Batteries Plus store, ...used to use a lot in my Mini Mag flashlights, so started collecting them....used to have a bring some back get a coupon for new ones.

So my idea was to maybe make a spring loaded battery holder....maybe PVC....that you could load up and add batteries then test for voltage until proper voltage was achieved.

Problem I see is simply most gear doesn't have a way to easily connect an external battery box....at least for AA and AAA batteries.
Maybe a appliance that has a 9 volt battery...and the clip on connector.

I'm thinking this is going to be confirmed to not work....well....LOL

Yes, rechargeable batteries are the way to go....if you have a way to recharge ....in the field.

I notice that Eneloop batteries are Alkaline and seem cost effective....and can be charged or topped off with out damage.

Too bad my old faithful Radio Shack isn't around any more...... to pick up components for a trial holder.

The thought was "emergency" or if I have to chase parts...maybe not field expedient?

Gotta go to Menards anyway, gonna look for a pvc or cpvc that fits a AA battery.

Both the van and truck have 110VAC outlets so I could charge them IF I knew in advance that I'd need to. Have to beat feet kinda thing. But don't carry a charger in either vehicle. They are cheap enough a guy probably should/could. I also have and have posted on the Anker 15000 mah external battery. I can charge my cell phones or anything that uses some size of USB plug. I have different adapters to use. It also has a light. It's the bees knees. It has a 2A charge slot that will recharge my cell phone in about half the time it takes through the cell phone plug in since those are 1A. I love the thing and use like I stole it.

BTW...just got back from Menards...picked up a piece of 1/2 PVC a couple of caps, springs.....for about 3 bucks total...for my holder.....
Ended up spending $56 bucks of Hornet spray, fatwood, Dremel tool, "D" Batteries....and two Chicago style Hot Dogs for lunch...LOL....

I shouldn't be allowed out alone.

OK, spent some time making a battery holder.....will hold 10 AA for 15 volts.
Cut piece of PVC, couple of bolts for contacts....a cap, two pieces of 1/2 dowel one with hole in the center for neg.
contact bolt.......and some extra wire....was looking for a load to try....but seems the meter is providing that.

Loaded up 8 batteries that tested in the 1.23 range ave...so was about 9.84 volts, but that was blinking around on the meter.
After a few minutes with just the tester as a load, had dropped to 7.44 around 3:00 PM to 7.16 (pic)...to 6.04 just now at 4:00 PM

I have two hand-held CB radios around here someplace. They both take 8 AA batteries apiece and the range between the two is very minimal. They're going to stay lost. A few Christmas's back my Marine son bought me a set of these.

I was just curious if adding batteries to anything when low would extend the service life of what ever, ....even slightly.

Most of the time it's not practical to add a battery, anyway, as there is no where to put it...LOL.

Yeah, if I was going to have a CB for the highway I think I'd get me an auto model installed in my vehicle with a large antenna and a power Mike. Trouble is I can't come up with a catchy handle!...:cowboy:

With the hand held you are kinda in stealth mode....No bigazz antenna whipping in the breast.....but can still talk to other trucks or cars.

I do have a couple of units that could be installed...took out of a an older vehicle a few vehicle's ago.....

Back when,... I was "The Sin City Flash".......Kenosha was the one of the first cities other than Reno and Los Vegas that had strippers...hence "Sin City."

Back when, I got chased out of a strip club in Madison when my boss told one of the gals he was waiting for the "good lookin' girls to show up". Beer might have been involved. But not enough to keep me from knowin' when it was time to exit stage left. Bouncer was pretty close on our heels. It was walk fast and drag the boss, walk fast and drag the boss. And folks wonder why I don't drink any more.

Nice test on the batteries. Had to give you some rep for the effort.

I was "The Sin City Flash".......Kenosha was the one of the first cities other than Reno and Los Vegas that had strippers...hence "Sin City."The big antenna looks really cool on a white car, makes the other motorists around you paranoid thinking you might just be a State trooper in an unmarked cruiser. The units I have also had power cords to plug into the cigarette lighters...may be able to get a universal one at Radio Shack. Be sure and take your unit in if you do so they can pair you up with the right one....:cowboy:

Two whole set ups are in the shed at "The Place" never like the big whips so use the magnetic mount or gutter mounts....(I don't think ant vehicles have gutters any more).

Still have the SWR meter needed to match impendence between radio and antenna.

Not too many people of the air any longer....but works good vehicle to vehicle....most chatter now id cell phone and texting.

Had the truck radio hooked up to a battery and charger in the shed at "The Place" for a while. ....but switched to Talkabouts.

Back in the 70's and 80's I would have felt nekked riding on long trips without a CB. Having others to talk to seemed to make the trip quicker.....or at least less boring.

Good test on the batteries, hunter! Good info to know that when they are "dead" they are not worth foolin' with.

Hand held CB...... Hmmmm. There is a thought for another toy I could use........

Nater - I have the Midland 75-822. Fairly inexpensive and does a decent job. You can also purchase longer ducky antennas than the OEM giving you some extra range.

I have not messed around with ham radios and such for a while but so am not up on what is the best technology today but theoretically if your power source is something that varies a lot like a battery or solar panel then a DC-DC converter may be the most efficient and auto-regulating. Much better than the very old analog voltage regulators that dissipated most of the power. You can even get the 12VDC required from fewer cells if that is really what you want. Those sealed lead acid batteries for home alarm systems, backup battery strips etc. are fairly reliable and rechargeable. By online, at Fry's, Radio Shack, Home Depot and many other places. I'm not sure where the best place to buy is?? eBay, Amazon, Jet or local?

You might get a design online and solder your own with parts from DigiKey or just buy a ready to go unit, small solar panel will take forever to charge but is fun. Here is one place that came up with google but I have never ordered from there. Probably 20 better places.

My best advice is buy a complete integrated system that has the output voltage and amps that your radio requires unless you have a lot of time to fool around with soldering iron and volt meter etc. Also the older DC-DC converters would burn up if you ran them with "NO LOAD" but many newer ones have fail safes. Fun stuff, in my nerdy mind anyway.

Edit: Looked at specs more closely this one is huge for your needs 4.5-9VDC input and regulated 12VDC output but 20 amps output with 2 amp minimum more like some thing you would need for a high powered radio or computer. Can adjust output for drop in line and current limiting resistor etc: 11.7 - 13.9V this is typical but once set the line regulation should be very steady regardless of how the voltage drops on you batteries as they drain or solar panels a sunlight goes in and out.

This module 1"x1" is still very high power at 30 Watts and 2.5 Amps output but may be closer to what you need look for something surplus from an electronics shop in your area. There is Tanner Electronics in the North Dallas area and probably something like that near you that sells stuff like this or look online.

Specs on this module are 9-36 VDC input with a highly regulated 12 VDC output (2.5 Amps max) 89% efficiency which means that 11% of the energy going in is dissipated as heat so allow for that to blow off or some air flow of some kind, put in an aluminum enclosure with holes and plenty of space. Cost is very high at $44 so I would try to find a 0.5 amp? model for about $5 or $10 or if you know an Electronic Engineer they may get a sample from a vendor for free. (that's were I get my toys from.)

But this experiment was to answer a specific question....Answer, "When standard batteries are dead....They are dead."
To review......
Radio had 10 AA dead batteries....or at least all voltages on a meter was 1,24 on and average....not enough to power it up.

Question was: In a survival scenario....stuck in boonies, needing rescue, radio won't work....but do have several more almost dead batteries.
SO
If I add a few more "low voltage/going dead batteries" till I had the required 15 VDC (appears that's what this hand head uses) would it work....and for how long?

Answer, Most likely for a while, brief while..... but was impossible or at least I didn't want to mess with it that much, to hook up extra batteries.

I could achieve proper voltages by adding batteries.....but even the meter was enough of a load....voltage kept steadily going down.

BTW, checked this morning, the voltage had gone back up some what....after an over night "rest".
And as a trial I used 3 low voltage batteries to get 3 volts to power up a flashlight bulb....and went down and out very quickly.

The other problem with adding batteries to achieve proper voltage....being able to mount, hold and connect them.
