Multitool vs. SAK for EDC?

I've got an interesting problem on my hands. For the past few months, I've been carrying an ancient Gerber multitool, like the first one in this article: http://fmgpublications.com/exclusive-gerber-multi-pliers-old-and-new/. It's been convenient to have so many tools, like pliers, a saw, a Philips head screwdriver, and others. The tools I use most are the knife, pliers, and saw. But when it's in my pocket, I fell like I'm lugging a brick around. The multitool is very heavy and bulky. Carrying the Gerber has gotten to the point where I have started leaving it at home because it's so uncomfortable to carry for extended periods of time. So when I need the tools on it, I don't have them as they are stowed in a range bag or vehicle.

But for the past few days, I've been carrying a Victorionox Officer, a much lighter, much more compact tool. It's proven to be almost as handy as the Gerber, but not quite. There are two tools, a saw and a pair of pliers, that I frequently need, but I don't have. Should I keep the Gerber where I can get to it, but not on my person, while I carry the SAK? Should I just get used to the Gerber or ditch it entirely and just carry the SAK? I've even though about getting a new multitool, a Leatherman Wave or Surge, but I'm really grown fond of both the Gerber and the SAK. What do you recommend?

I carry a SwissTool in a pouch on my belt and an ALOX Farmer in my pocket.
The SwissTool is used for the heavier jobs.

No, I can't say I have. Good idea. For years, my Dad carried his on a belt, but I've never thought to carry one that way. It's definitely something to try!

About two months ago, I tried carrying two knives, the Gerber and an Opinel No. 7. Like the article in my OP says, the tools do not lock. I wanted something with a lock and the Opinel was light enough, but it ended up just adding bulk to my pocket. So I stopped carrying it. Ideally, I'd just carry one knife, but if it comes to using a setup like yours, I'd do it.

Just about everyone is making a mini version these days. Leatherman makes the Micra, Gerber makes the Clutch. Perhaps one of those are better suited for you with or without a belt pouch.

I've seen those, but I like the larger multitools for bigger jobs. I was given an inexpensive knife set a few years ago and it included one of the mini multitools. It's handy around the house, but the larger tools are more useful. I'll check out the Leatherman Micra, though, I've heard good things about them.

What I trying to say....You are going thru the same thing as most everyone that even thinks about carrying tools and/or anything that useful...besides a credit card and cell phone.

I gonna say I carry a SAK(s).....Always, have since 1982( long story)....actually a few....Knife, (not real sure what the name is....but has the scissors and saw)...a SAK money clip, scissors and pen knife,..... and if I have my keys...mini SAK with the same scissors/pen knife...but adds a tooth pick.

When I was working service...in addition to the SAK(s) and other stuff in pockets......Leatherman in belt holster, Mini Mag flashlight, cell phone (2) and pager....and key hanger.
Needed suspenders to hold my pants up......(actually still wear them, old guy stuff)

When I quit working I switch to one of the Mini Multi tools (el-cheapo)....that has a flashlight on one handle of the pliers, work OK when I need to just grab something or cut a wire ....It will bend out of shape if you squeeze it on a nut too hard.....but get me by.

I carry this in a SAK pouch, with mini BIC, ferro rod/striker, and cotton balls....

So now only one small flip cell phone, pouch and keys....still have flashlight on the mini multi tool.

The truth is....you fall victim to the "One more thing, one more thing...then gets too heavy, or hard to carry"...and stays home.
THis applied \s to BOB's and tool boxes as well.

A carried cheapo multi tool that get carried,.... beats a super multi tool that weighs 2 pounds that stays home ...any day.

Been messing with this stuff since I was a boy....and is still changing.

PS Was at the store today....my SAK is a "Huntsman" at the moment.

The Gerber and the SAK are both nice tools, no doubt about it. You make a good point about the cheap tool that gets carried vs. the better quality one that doesn't. You've given a few things to consider. Thanks.

I carry a Gerber multi-tool every day with the belt pouch that comes with it. Hardly notice it there, unless it gets pumped on occasion. Not a deal breaker though and cannot imagine life without it. Also carry a 3.5" folder and a real small three blade no name folder for little things like opening simple packaging, envelopes or cutting tape.

But are there any multitools or multipurpose knives like Swiss that have locking blades and quality steel that does not get dull very quickly? My personal issue is that most of the time I just need a blade and don't want a poor quality one, or a bunch of stuff on my belt or in pockets. Also if I go thru one of those dang metal detecting wand waving places and forgot about it I can see it a ways off and remove the tiny knife from my keychain and put in my shoe. Most of the time they don't care about those and multi-tools however. Just crazy people with hatchets in movie theaters spraying pepper or whatever,... trying to commit suicide by cop. Duck cover and run or tackle the nut case, no weapon required IMO.

On the other hand, when things weren't busy, I had one escort me out of security so I could put my little pocket knife in my checked luggage. I had forgotten about it. This is exactly why I refuse to fly. I have not flown since the military last made me in 2006. Not worth it, I'll just drive.

I carry a leatherman on my belt seven days a week from the time I get up in the morning until I go to bed at night. Use it a gazillion times day. The pliers are used the most, the replaceable cutters are a great feature in my opinion. In the woods I use it for cutting trap wire or pulling something hot out of the fire. I'm naked without my multi tool.

I find a good SAK will handle most jobs except when pliers are needed, then an inexpensive no-name multitool is enough. Lockblade pocket knife, Victorinox Spartan in a belt sheath, cheap multitool in a belt sheath, Victorinox Classic on my key chain, GI can opener on my key chain, pocket AAA penlight and pens in my shirt pocket - these are enough for my inner MacGyver. :) I also find it useful to wear a photographers vest with plenty of pockets. This vest can be worn in a warm climate comfortably.

I would recommend a leatherman wave,you can put a clip on it and hang it in your pocket.
I personally use a Skinth sheath. Large shield and it was one of the best purchases I have ever made.

I always carry a Buck 110 on my belt as well as my phone, so I really didn't want anything else there. I also EDC a GEC Bullnose in a front pocket. I really like the Gerber Dime. While its not a primo multi tool, it can do the few things I'd need a multi tool for and it is barely noticeable in my other pocket along with my keys. At about $12 I won't feel bad if I break it or lose it.

I am never too far from a multitool but I prefer to have an Alox farmer in my pocket and a fixed blade on my belt. I carry a Candiru at work and you can't even tell it's there. Then an Izula ii around town. In the woods the fixed blade would be bigger.

I actually have a small pair of chanelloks I made a little Kydex cover for so they can ride in my pocket. I carry those and the Alox over a multitool. I will try to remember to post a picture later tonight.
