Good thing the UK media is warning their people not to play with or hunt armadillos in Florida while vacationing there. I can imagine this was beginning to be quite a major issue. (snark) All those infected tourists on planes going back to the UK.

As a kid I once visited a community where people with leprosy lived I did not ask but am fairly sure very few of them got it from armadillos. I however did catch a live armadillo when I was in 6th grade in the playground, and am fairly sure I never got leprosy from it or the people with leprosy, it is not that easy to transfer. Armadillos smell very bad I dropped the critter and never attempted to pick one up again. If folks from the UK are picking them up and playing with them they probably have bigger issues than leprosy. It is a freaking armadillo not a koala bear, you are not in Australia!

Funny that this is just now "a thing". I actually did a lot of research on Hanson's Disease (Leprosy) years ago. It's cheaply cured now a day.

I lived on the Gulf Coast in the late 80s and dillos were everywhere. A buddy wanted a stuffed one but local taxidermist would not touch them because they said they carried leprosy. People also said they piss acid.
Never saw one here in north AL. til about 10 years ago. I guess a few made it across the TN. river and now they are everywhere.

Years ago I was selling insurance in Colorado. This guy bought a health policy off of me because Mutual of Omaha dropped him. He raised champion Appaloosas, but he also had cats, and the company said that they believed that cats could cause Leukemia. Easiest sale I ever made!...:cool2:

We had a ton in the woods near my house growing up. We would shoot them with our BB guns and they would jump straight up in the air and then run toward their hole. You try to catch them before they got started in their hole or you couldn't pull them out to save your life.

We knew they were supposed to carry Leprosy. But, never heard of anyone catching it from them until a few years ago.

Up in Allapattah Flats in Martin County they are so thick during small game you trip over them.

Possums on the half shell, Dillo power!

Always said down here the pork in pork fried rice is actually armadillo. We used to sell our catch of fish that we didn't eat like grunts and stuff to the Chinese. They always had turtles and armadillos scratching around in cardboard boxes in the back. Wasn't any armadillo or turtle on the menu though! LOL

Nothing new. I heard or read that during WW2 the U.S. thought the Germans had infected armadillos with leoprosy. Turned out to be a natural defense of the critters. Wash up and cook em' good.

LOL Rick, even the Turtle man knew this when he captured armadillos in Texas and relocated them away from people. ( I think he was capturing them in the Alamo episode).

Turtleman is from Kentucky, Ernie Brown is his name and he roves around rescuing nuisance critters and relocating them back into the wild away from people.. He has the past couple of years traveled far outside of Kentucky to rescue critters at the behest of some rather famous (infamous?) folks. I thought everyone had heard of him,LOL.

Now ... a question I have been pondering is whether, in a survival situation (actual emergency type, not single-post-and-leave-WSF type), would you cook and eat an armadillo if you hadn't eaten in three or four days, and that was the only thing you had in a trap, and hadn't had any luck hunting anything else?

edit: Make that if you were just out of food otherwise, and it was the first thing you caught. There are some survival school folks who will post trapping animals on YouTube and such, and eat whatever they catch (opossums, coyotes). But I have never seen then catch an armadillo, and have never asked in the comments.

There are between 10 to 12 cases every year of people in Florida getting leprosy from armadillos and yet it says only 5% of the human population are even susceptible to the disease. What do they do there, chase the armadillos for fun?

Well you better not shoot at them, that's for sure, the bullet might bounce off and hit your mother-in-law.

Absolutely. There's surprisingly a lot of meat on an armadillo.

Like racoons and rabies, and prairie dogs and plague, not all armadillos carry Hansen's disease and it's not that common that people catch Hansen's disease from armadillos. There's always something that carries something and it's usually more of a scare than a reality.

When you travel in the US, just like when you travel outside the US, you need to do your homework and see what kind of hazards you might have to deal with. They still have malaria in Alabama, Lyme's disease from the Tennessee River north, plague in the west, hurricanes and tornadoes in the southeast, massive snowstorms in the northeast, and hailstorms in the front range of the Rockies. In the Rockies, we have bears and avalanches.

It's funny - there are trails in Alabama that, when you read the description, they warn you that the armadillos are territorial and will chase you.

I read someplace that it takes 2 to 5 years for Hansens Disease to manifest itself once you have been exposed to the bacteria. If that is true, how the heck do they know it was an armadillo that gave it to them.....unless that is the only source outside humans?

When I was younger it was quite rare to see one in GA.
Now they are everywhere.
Mostly see them on the road dead, but one was trotting across the front yard at a surprising pace.
I just watched him pass into the forest...
And if you straddle them just right so you clip them just barely, you can watch it comically tumble in your rear-view mirror.

Er uh ... not that I'm suggesting it or anything ...

I'm a little "conspiracy theory" prone. I don't buy that statistic. I know that there are stories of wildlife management stating that there are no panthers (or cougars, or wolves, take your pick) in a certain area and locals have seen them, even taken pics. I assume so that no one will go looking for a trophy. They mention Lyme disease in FL, but leave out that they contracted it up north.

Yes, I would eat an armadillo. Just not in Mexico.

I actually had a ranger tell me that very thing about Bald Eagles. I asked him if there were any nesting pairs in an area and he told me no. I said then you need to take your camera over there because there is a male and female at the corner of those woods. Then he got excited. The long and short of it is they denied they were there because they were afraid someone would harm them.

You mean people EAT armadillo?? If so, it is just another food that I might try some day.........along with horsemeat, rattlesnake, porcupine, beaver tail and opossum. Which foods you eat is almost entirely a matter of culture.

I have seen armadillo recipes on the internet, and the recipes do say to cook the meat well. I suppose that is to kill any pathogens on the armadillo (sometimes called "Hoover hogs"?)

Ok, I am fixin to type this slow for y'all. Oppossum is more favorable to some than raccoon. So, folks would hunt coons when the hide price was up and possum when they had to sell for the meat. Armadillo is called possum on the half shell in the south.

I remember my mom bought and still has, somewhere, a purse made out of armadillo. She got it in Mexico.

Because I do not speak Southern, I had to look up Jerry Clower on the Internet. If I am correct, one of Mr. Clower's recording was "Fish'n, Frogs, Dawgs and Hawgs". Was that a cookbook or the menu of restaurant in Dixie? :sad: I have managed to miss that menu, but I have substituted octopus, moray eel, sea urchin and palolo worms.:FRlol:
