I hate this. I really do. I have everything I ever intend to buy to survive whatever. I've even posted that I'm done prepping and I am. There's only so much stuff you can collect (guns and bacon excluded of course). Then one morning I wake up and realize that I'm not 20 any more. I can't haul stuff on my back like I used to. No combat loads. Even 40lb packs are uncomfortable. Like many of you I've been under the knife one too many times and things aren't put back together exactly the way you were born with them.

I'm not a bug out kind of guy but there could be circumstances that would force me to leave. My first choice is by auto/truck but it's possible I won't be able to do that. I've had a pulk, skies and snow shoes for winter travel for a long while but nothing with wheels for bare ground. So I pulled the trigger today and ordered a folding deer cart. Aaaargh. I hate it. I'll let you know how it works. If I have to order one more item (guns and bacon excluded of course) I swear I'm going to accept my fate as a victim.

$70 with free shipping. It's rated for 500 lbs. I probably can't pull or push that much.

I could see this turning into a "You know you're too old when" thread !

You know you're too old when you still look at girls but don't remember why for example......:dead:

I have used one for a few years....don't have a pic just now in up in the rafters, but is folding skeleton version........works good for deer, probably not for hauling anything else.

It's a two wheel cart, but have to say, for woods, a single wheel cart.....and there are a lot of them....work better for getting through brush.

As most likely most people would be interested in a hauler for flat open ground and for load bearing, two wheel should be better.

I her ya on the getting old part....have been backing off on gear and tools, not sure I gonna use them much, if at all......save the cash, pay some one, supervise from my lawn chair......LOL.

PS,.... does not apply to a few necessary things.

If I have any luck at all I'll not be pulling it through brush or even woods for that matter.

I have started looking at it the other way.

I have lived long enough to get old. That is a really neat thing and quite the accomplishment. I remember several people that have not had that success.

That is the real survival, the survival everyone dreams of. Living long and seeing your grandchildren grow up.

I was about 25 the first time I heard/read one of the original bunch of doomsday prophets. I am pretty sure it was Howard Ruff and How to Survive the Coming Hard Times . That was back in the late '70s. It didn't happen. then it didn't happen the next time they were shouting from the rooftops. Then it didn't happen again, and then again. Then we had the biggest financial failure since the Great Depression, and the world remained intact.

Hell folks, the only people I know that can keep their jobs after being that wrong, that often, work as weathermen on TV. But old Howard's books are still favorites among the "in crowd". And people are still spending millions on bunkers in the mid-west that they will never be able to get too if the "real thing" happens.

I have one of those deer hauling carts too. I haul deer with it! At least I do when I can't get anyone to run in with a 4 wheeler and get it for me. Just because the end of the world ain't here yet don't mean we can't use the gear!

Rick, find yourself an AR pistol that does not have to be fired from the shoulder and go deer hunting! use that cart and haul that sucker home!

PS. In those primitive warrior societies like everyone seems to envision in SHTF, the life expectancy was 35. That is one reason it took a million years to invent the light bulb. No one lived long enough to get as smart as us old geezers are!

Seems like a single wheel would try to tip side to side, like a single wheelbarrow, which is why I got the double wheeled one when they first came out ;)

Cabelas has one called a "super magnum" game cart. It has dual wheels on it to make it a little easier on rough ground and has a heavier (700 pound) rating. It folds for easier storage, The price is higher but I'm seriously leaning toward getting one.

I have an all-terrain little red wagon. A 4-wheeled thing. Holds about 200 lbs. I put gak tubes in the tires to make them puncture proof. I used to use it to pull a cooler and gear down the mile long sand road when fishing out on the sandbar for an overnight. That doesn't happen much any more. I'm lucky to be able to walk out there with light gear now and really sucks to catch that 40pounder within the first 20 minutes and not having had a chance to ice the knees in order to walk back. Quite honestly, I doubt I could walk the 50 miles from work to home should I need to. The GHB is quite light for that reason and contains several instant ice packs too. Not going to be a "helpless" victim. Going down swingin. But age is a factor.

I have a folding wagon that I use to haul stuff to the grand kids ball games. It goes from the van to the ball diamond. Saves carrying the folding chairs, etc. But I sure wouldn't want to pull that thing very far. Instead of having a front axle like a regular wagon the front wheels turn independently. Makes steering a tad tougher.

I'm in the market for something similar. I have concluded that I'm too old to back pack now. I had an overnighter a few weeks ago and not only was it tough getting to sleep, but geting in and out of the tent was no east task either. Soooo having made that decision, I am now looking for a bigger tent, better airbed (maybe even a camp bed) and a set of wheels to drag all this new gear on and off the train. I'm not ready to give up camping just yet.

I tested a new tent and set up on a recent trip. It's a big tent complete with cots and all the creature comforts. The goal is to help Mrs. Crash with her back problems.

The group named the set up the Crashmahal.

I have gotten to the point that due to age related issues with my feet there is not going to be any backpacking/hiking be it toting the load or dragging it on one or two wheels.

My excursions will be vehicle supported, as they have been for some time now. Fortunately I have access to "wilderness" which can be visited only a few yards off of access roads. A good high clearance 4wd vehicle also helps in that effort.

The trolleys, wagons and barrows I'll use for getting game and gear from point-A to the vehicle, if necessary. Otherwise I will just back the Jeep up to my favored "spot" and offload.

And since I have a 1/2 ton hauler right there I might as well forget this minimalist crap. Fill that sucker up along with the trailer it is pulling!

Coolers, beds, tall tents, heaters, stoves and chairs! I want all of it!

Those fat tire bicycles for sand have become popular in recent years if the soil and mud give you problems you might be able to swap the wheels out for them. I rarely used a wheeled cart for my kayak or canoe but did buy one with extra wide tires years ago because soft sandy soil is a PITA on thin tires.

Or something lower tech and heavy:

I have noticed over the years that a lot of former avid backpackers join canoe and kayak clubs and let the river carry the load. You can still do fun side hikes from the side of the lake, river or coast up into the side canyons but the long hikes for days with all your gear on your back are over after a certain age for many people. There is also ATV, horseback, sailboat and many other ways to get around. Putting 40+ extra pounds or more on your spine and knees and feet for many hours a day is a issue for a body that was only intended to survive about 70 years and starts to deteriorate faster than it can repair itself after about age 30 or 40. These are observations many outdoors people much older than me have shared with me over the years, just passing on what I was told.

Winnie

The problem I have is not being able to drive. When I go away it's on public transport. Until now, It starts with a mile and a half walk into town to catch the bus, 1 bus ride to the rail station and then go where I want. Then walk to the campsite. Until this year I was able to carry it all. This time was a big struggle and I was only out for a night. Like kyrat said, I want comfort, a tent I can sort of stand up in and a near decent bed. My back and knees just can't cope with minimalist backpacking anymore.
On the bright side, it gives me a chance to (legitimately) trawl through camping and outdoors stores and buy new kit.

I sympathise with Mrs Crash, what's the Crashmahal look like? I'm in the market for something similar.

Winnie, every time I've been to the UK, the B&B people say "Oh sure, the train or bus station is just a 10 minute walk." You know that mile and a half? Yeah...Some of those stations sure as heck aren't a 10 minute walk... Was up in Sterling Scotland once on what my buds and I call a Pub Crawl week. Nearest pub was "a 10 minute walk" from the B&B - more like 2 miles. It was a really tough but jovial "walk" back. Gave a whole new meaning to pub crawl. LOL.

At the Jamboree it will have a warm, carpeted floor, two oversized Gander Mountain cots and some other comforts.

Two weeks ago I started training for a marathon (to be run in February). It's been on my bucket list for a long time. Now that I've lost some weight I figured may as well give it a go. Anyway ---- Saturday's are our longer runs (doing this with a large group). The Saturday of the Jamboree is supposed to be a 20 mile run. Not sure how far I'll actually do in the hills, but I'll need a nice comfy place when through.

Oh yeah.......forgot to say - anything to make Mrs. Crash comfortable.

Interesting discussion! Appearantly there are too many of us on this forum who are senior citizens whose miss-spent younger years are catching up with us and the physical toll severely limits our ability to "Bug-out" on foot or to "tuff-it-out" with minimalist gear. In my case, I have gone from a pre-teen sleeping in a pup tent, to larger tents to pick-up camper, back down to sleeping in the truck bed underneath cap , to motor home, back to large tent with cots. Now I am getting so crippled up that hiking/backpacking is out of the question. I could probably vehicle camp but setting up any tent like the Crashmahal by myself is out of the question. My family no longer want me to go on solo outings. I am about to go on a bucket list trip for my 75 Birthday, to ride the Polar Bear Express to James Bay and had to recruit two slightly younger friends to over come family objections.
Serious fishing trips are now drive-in/fly-in trips to lodges. No more go pitch a tent fishing trips. Same with hunting trips. I guess I should not complain, as I can still hunt and fish and sight-see. I just have to plan less strenuous adventures.

A group of my friends were camping on the sandy banks of a river (East-TX) and this one experienced camper pulled out a sand rake from his canoe to flatten out an area and clear the stick and stones out for his rather large tent. (I prefer smaller ones when solo so more locations I can put it, tarp for siting during rain.) Some folks laughed at him, but I just told him it was a great idea and asked if I could borrow it when he was done. Only problems with taking a long wide 16-18 foot canoe for just one person are that if there are strong head winds a feathered double bladed paddle 8-9 foot long (mohawk brand or similar) really comes in handy and it helps to have a seat like ice chest or large dry box moved further front. Also if you can "edge" with out tipping the canoe it helps especially if single blade J stroking. What is NOT fun is hauling all that comfort gear up a steep embankment to your site and back down again, setting up then tearing down. One older friend who was recovering from a heart attack took a long time packing up in the mornings, I stayed back with him because if he did not show up at the next campsite I did NOT want to paddle up stream 6-10 miles to find him. His doctor told him not to paddle more than 10 miles in a loaded canoe per day, he is slower but has been doing just fine for several years. He would probably be dead if he was not an active outdoors person.

My dad took a lot more stuff on vacations when he got older, took forever for use to leave the house. I put extra stuff in vehicle but where it is not in the way and rarely get it out. Also larger FAK which I leave in car, just a small one with me with key items. Also "5 day" ice chest with just incase items, but prefer to live without those. Learned that cold drinks are just psychological, body actually burns more calories trying to heat up cold fluids, so typically does not cool you down unless you put cold drink on outside of your neck to cool blood going to brain.

BTW Just because cold drinks are mostly a psychological boost is not at all a bad thing. When my friends and I take newbies on "Eco tours" I or some other experience paddler will often paddle a tandem kayak or canoe with one or more large ice chests full of water bottles and sports drinks etc on ice because most people will drink far more fluids if they are chilled. Thus there is less risk of dehydration and hyperthermia (over heating) due to people not sweating which can go from that to permanent organ failure in just 2-5 minutes. I talk to and look at people for signs of this.

I thought I was the only one who has had more than my fair share of surgeries, literally. I was rarely sick as a kid other than the normal chicken pox/measles/mumps, and a broken arm which caused me to spend only the second night of my then short life in the hospital due to a wet cast being too heavy for me to lift. Since my 19th birthday in 1986, I have been operated on 11 times, and trying to put off having shoulder surgery. Muscle and nerve surgery in my right arm saw the need to transfer some viable muscle and nerve from behind my right elbow to my right forearm to repair tissue that was killed in an accident, the tendon in the right wrist was then rerouted to my thumb so that I was also able to use that digit.

All of those do take a toll on the body, however by far the worst that I had done was the fusion on my neck, I was told that it would nearly instantaneously eliminate my neck pain and that was not the case. I hurt every day, and sitting in class ( although I had exemption to get up and walk whenever I needed to, and I used that often) and sitting at home studying and doing homework has caused undesirable effects as well, I am now in the process to take my life back, losing the weight I gained from inactivity, and increasing my strength with exercises aimed at doing so without increasing pain in my neck and shoulder. have been thinking about getting a pack dog though to help alleviate the weight of my backpack when hiking.

We tend to car camp. Drive to the camp site and have a short carry to pitch the tent. Once camp is set up we can take short hikes on trails close by.

Bugging out in foot is not gonna happen for us. Fortunately we live in an area that flood is not a threat. Our biggest issue is losing power so we have prepped for that and so we will survive until we don't.

Seriously folks - forget the odd humor above..

learn to pear down the equipment. How about a 16 pound full pack with this gear?

That would be okay if all you had to consider was one person and we were talking about backpacking. I don't mind a 20 lb pack. I did Wyoming and Idaho last fall with that much. But moving more people with everything that would be needed if you can't take a vehicle injects a whole different set of issues. Hence the cart. It should arrive tomorrow and I have some mods on the drawing board already.

If you are involving the family to bug it in - just like scouting they are the mules. Don't get me wrong I see value in the cart. I am having trouble Rick as we do not know each other that well and I never pack in more than 20 pounds in the last ten years. The big tents I have are back of car camping and I have almost given up on them too.. Might sell them - hardly used.

Oh, no you don't. No way I'm callin' my wife a mule. I still have a few good years left. I'd prefer to live them healthy.

Love your humor... I'm ready to kick my mule out of the barn, can't plow, cant cook, cant clean, cant send home to mama. Guess that makes me a Jack... nope an Elephant...:arabia:

How did hiking Wyoming and Idaho compare to hiking the Knobstone trail,Rick?

Rick

The Knobstone clobbered me three times. I've never been able to complete that blasted trail. In Wyoming we hiked at 11,000 feet and in Idaho about 6,000. And I can't conquer a stupid series of 300 foot hills. Go figure.

If you decide to hit the trail here again, call me up, I'll gladly hike a section with you. I need the exercise and someone who shares my love of hiking, I live right beside the Clark State Forestry and Steve can not hike the trails because he has a heart condition, his docs strongly suggested he go on the transplant waiting list be he refused.
