Earlier today I was looking at some knife reviews on youtube and one video in particular I had to chuckle. The guy was reviewing a knife but also had made the statement about how cheap ferro rods sucked. Some of them do I'm sure, but I've seen a bunch of cheap ferro rods that actually worked quite well. But in this guys case the quality of the ferro rod he was using was not the issue. It looked like one of the Harbour Freight magnesium bar/ferro rod combos and it was throwing good sparks. I have one of these and they do work well for the price - never had an issue with mine. Anyway, this guy picks up a stick that is obviously wet because it was laying in the snow. Then he uses his knife to shave off some fairly thick looking shavings and then tries to ignite them using nothing but the sparks from the ferro rod. This doesn't work for him, so he tries to use the magnesium bar and scrapes a few micro sized shavings off - maybe a couple dozen very tiny pieces which is no where near enough to get anything more than a sparkle and then hits it with several tries at the ferro rod again with no luck. Then he pulls out a Bic lighter and has problems lighting the shavings with it too but does finally get a small flame going. It was very obvious that the guy was inexperienced at this sort of thing because his shavings were too big and thick for damp wood which makes them very hard to get going. Then he expected them to ignite with just the sparks alone, then didn't scrape off enough of the magnesium to even provide anything near a flame, then he faults his equipment for not providing fire. Inexperience like that can mean your life and its nothing to joke about, so make sure you know how to use this stuff before you ever get in a position that you have to rely on it to help you survive.
First, he should have got his shavings from the drier, inner core of his wood and made much thinner shavings. Then he should have shaved off a pile of magnesium the size of a quarter before he ever struck the first spark ! Magnesium burns at about 5400 degrees, and this would have been a lot more likely to start his fire !

A camera and an ego seems to be the magic combination.
But at least he was learning how "Not to do it" but looking silly in the process.
If I don't open the blister pack..... when I have my whole tool box...... to get the "whatever" out, the thing I need to survive,.... then I won't be able to do it when wet, cold, dark, bleeding............
Good advice to practice with your gear....Before it's needed....and for sure before you make a vid.....LOL
Sadly, all fero rods are made by the same company in China. They must make 20 or 30 varieties, perhaps more, but they are the sole manufacturer today.

I'm not so certain. I have seen some people making some obvious mistakes like that, and still blame the tool. They ended up not learning anything.

You know Hunter, I've seen some big mistakes by some of the well known survival experts too. Like BG building a fire and burning his hands trying to carry it back to his base camp because he had to walk back into the woods to find dry fuel. And Dave Canterbury and Cody Lundin heating water in a snake skin to purify it which in itself is not a bad idea because they showed how to improvise and the snake provided a meal. But they had carried fire in a metal bucket to where they were setting up camp, and the bucket had a few holes in it. I would have used my knife to carve out wooden plugs to seal the holes so that I could have boiled a whole bucket of water ! But maybe I'm too critical ?

That's right Rat, some folks just don't get it. I saw a kid on one of Bear Grylls shows trying to get a piece of Wetfire tinder going with a ferro rod without taking it out of the package first ! Yeah, it was still sealed in the plastic wrap and this kid couldn't figure out why it wouldn't light !
The best tool you have in a survival situation is knowledge and experience !

I am constantly amazed at not only how stupid people are, but also at how clumsy they are.
So many people do not have the dexterity to accomplish simple tasks like scraping a fire steel efficiently under ideal conditions that I am certain they will not be able to accomplish the process when stressed.
That is especially true for knife handling. I feel that part of the trend to large blades is due to clumsy people not being able to handle a small blade precisely and efficiently. They probably still do better writing with the "fat pencil" they had in the first grade.

Here is the thing with all things. There are good and bad. I have books where the authors only qualification to write a book on wilderness skills was his ability to write. As was mentioned, sometimes you watch these shows on TV and your asking, "You'd do what?!!!"
Anyone who watched Dave Canterbury's videos on youtube before he was on saw he kinda learned a skill and then treid to do a video on the topic. He was no expert then. So, when you watch him on Dual Survivor and he kind of shows that someone just explained to him what he is showing. You know what is going on.
I would likely never have gotten friction fire without youtube videos. Even the decent youtube stars can be a monumental waste of time. Like Nut-N-Fancy and Hitchcock45. But, you can weed through fast forward and get some really good info from youtube.
More so than not youtube is a great resource. All bad videos aside.
Sort of the modern day twist to you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a princess I guess.

I'm no survival expert myself, and I really don't think you ever quit learning survival, you just keep building on you survival skills each time you go out - its kind of like filling up a hard drive on your computer where your brain is the hard drive. But I learned friction fire back before there was an internet, youtube, and TV survival shows etc. My all time favorite book and I would urge everyone to add it to your library is Tom Brown's Field Guide to Wilderness Survival. That one book and I know a lot of folks don't like Tom Brown, taught me a world of information about wilderness survival including friction fire and other facets of survival to boot. The first survival book I ever had was the one the US Army puts out, but Tom Brown's book if you really study it and practice what it teaches can teach you to survive with nothing but your knowledge and skills even if you don't have equipment with you which I highly advise that you do !

Well, I look at youtube reviews for features before I buy most things. I'd say you don't really have to kiss the frog. You see a list of videos. Do you really want to watch a 20 minute review of a watch. The reveiw probably has 15 minutes of some kid strugling with packaging and saying uhmmmm, I think... yeah...
Then if you click on the video and the person doing the reveiw says he just got the knife and hasn't used it. Or I have had this gun and really love it. I hope one day to take it to a range and shoot it. Well, you might want to save your kisses. LOL

I do the same thing. If I'm interested in a product, I look for you tube reviews about it. But what really bothers me is a video listed as a review and all it shows is someone getting it out of a box, telling me its a "knife" for example and then continues with "its got a handle, an edge, black coating on the blade, and its got a sheath". That is not a review. Then you get one listed as a review and this guy is sitting there and rambles on for 15 minutes before he even mentions the product - what a waste of time ! My feeling is get to the meat of the matter. Show us how it performs. Show us how tough it is. Show the product in action being tested !

Sadly, all fero rods are made by the same company in China. They must make 20 or 30 varieties, perhaps more, but they are the sole manufacturer today.
That is interesting. I have seen an amazing range in prices and assumed it was mostly marketing but did not realize only one manufacturer. Ferrite rods and toroids from electronics do NOT throw a spark, evidently they lack the magnesium or whatever metal for that. Does anyone know a very cheap source of short thick rods with two holes drilled in for tying to shoe laces and apparel etc. as a backup. Fire Steel dot com is over priced as are most Amazon dot com and Alibaba is very high volume.
Cut and drill your own for under $1 each with rods from DX dot com I guess but that costs time and drill bits:

Cheap ferrocerium rods -> check fleabay. I bought some similar to the ones you described 8 per around $12.
I searched and searched for other suppliers and finally started importing them from China because they were the only manufacturer I could find. I know the Mora fire starters are produced by the China factory as well as some other name brands. Perhaps one or two more manufacturers have started making them in China but to my knowledge there is only one manufacturer that operates under two different names. The last factory outside of China was in Sweden and it stopped production 8-10 years ago.

I found some toggle ferroceium rods on eBay for about 60 cents each including shipping from far east (slow shipping not a problem), the description was for magnesium with ferro rod attached but photo was ferroceium only so curious to see what shows up, for $3.58 for 6 not a big deal either way. 1" bar is PITA to use, I actually use only as backup if primary fire starter (large rod or lighter) is broken or lost. This has happened when I let someone else borrow it, now I just start fires for other people, whenever I lend people gear bad stuff happens. Break tip off knife, lose or break stuff, some people should just spend their vacations in hotels.
On YouTube Reviews: After a while I found certain people who made good youtube videos on certain topics and rarely waste my time looking for new people since so many are a waste of time. Subscribe list is very limited so I save a list on a text file. Some people/channels are very good for bushcraft, others for blades, or firearms, fishing, hammocks, hiking gear, etc. etc. It seems that for every good channel on youtube there are at least 100 complete waste of time junk sites and many so so mediocre. I wonder if some people just post silly videos to see how many people will flame them, hope to get may views and make some money that way. Whatever, life is short I will not fall for it.
I watched that Discovery Channel N&A XL and they had many good skilled contestants and one who was just a total failure. Wondered if she was there for 2nd chance or for comic relief to watch her implode again. Whatever, people with total lack of skills and psychology can get badly injured and should just stay home IMO.
