View Full Version : At long last I've finally joined the ranks of the AR guys!

Well, I finally got my new CORE 15 M4 Scout Keymod picked up! To be honest, although I grew up a rifleman I must admit that for the last 25 years I've had almost nothing but sidearms. While I do have a couple of PCCs (an HK USC in .45 ACP and a Beretta Storm Carbine in 9mm) I've only had one real rifle in the last decade and that was my Browning A-Bolt Synthetic Stalker in .308 that I sold a few years back. I've been itching to try an M4-gery and I finally found a deal that seemed too good to pass on. This bad boy cost me $700 shipped with a nice keymod rail. I added some BCM stuff to it including: Gunfighter MOD3 Grip, Modular Light Mount, Gunfighter MOD 0 stock and a MOD 3 vertical grip. The sights are offset irons that I got from Amazon; they were inexpensive but they're pretty solid feeling. I also bought an Inforce WML, the Haley version. Lastly I made sure to have a half dozen Gen2 PMags on hand and 300 rounds of ammo.

I haven't really decided for sure what to get for an optic. I'm leaning towards biting the bullet and getting an Aimpoint PRO but we'll see. And I'll need some kind of sling.

I'm also playing with the light options right now. In the pictures I have my Surefire X300 Ultra mounted on the top rail and nothing on the offset Modular Light Mount. The mount works well and it positions the light in the exact same spot that I run on my other long guns (PCCs) which is a plus. But I actually feel like right on top is optimal. I'm also having trouble deciding between the Surefire and the Inforce. The X300 U is much brighter but the WML has a better switch.

It will probably be a couple weeks til I can get it to the local rifle range. Til then though I can drool and at least share some pictures!

I know the rules...pics or it didn't happen, right?:whistling:

So I gotta ask. What are you going to use the light for?

I don't have an AR, but love shooting the custom-built one of the guys brings to the range. It has open sites, and the trigger is as smooth as butter. Being able to hit the 10 ring consistently on a target at 100 yds benchrested is my idea of fun with one of those.

I have never used offset irons. Seems counter intuitive to me but the again I'm old. Nice looking weapon.

I use a scope with offset red dot. You have to get used to tilting the rifle, but I find myself tilting the AR at odd angles anyway due to the inline design, sights and magazine sticking out the bottom.

No light for me thanks. Lights only work if your opposition is unarmed, if they are armed you are one well lit dead man.

They do work well if you operating with another person. When the bad guy shoots you, your partner can spot his muzzle flash and take him out.

Phaedrus, until you've added all these proper and necessary accessories, you just have an ol' plain Jane rifle, barely usable.

I have lights on all my long guns and some of my sidearms. I think they're very useful, and to me it's in the why not category. The weight is minimal and it doesn't take too much space. Half of the day is night time and indoors dark is the default. Plus, once I had to use my BHP to shoot a racoon that was attacking a dog; it was about midnight and a moonless night. I had night sights but it was tricky to hold a hand held flashlight while shooting. That got me thinking (I know- dangerous!).

Was the raccoon armed?

I have a light on my raccoon rifle also, but that is a special purpose pest control weapon and not a folk weapon.

Of course it is your gun, and your choice so go right ahead. Not up to me to make your decisions.

Congrats on a really nice looking example of an AR.

The racoon had a taser...at least that's my story! This is my only rifle so it is an all-around do - everything gun for me. I wish I could set up several each for a specific purpose but I can't right now.

I've looked but I don't see a corkscrew OR a bottle opener on that thing. Not sure what value it would have in a true survival situation.

Nice looking addition....Congrats.

Got an old Colt target model, and inherited a Bushmaster, both are plain jane's w/ open sights.......guess I just have been working with the single shots and flintlocks lately....not really in to these much.

Was considering a different upper for the Colt....then some on said it had different sized pins....so kinda put it on the back burner.

I realize that some folks- especially vets that served in the 60s and 70s- have a different view of "light discipline" than many of the current crop of trainers. That's cool IMO. In the jungles of 'Nam I suppose you didn't want to give away your position. But I don't think that applies to the applications I have for this rifle. I'm not going to be slogging through rice paddies. Mostly this will be a plinker that maybe will do double duty as an HD/zombie gun. There are lights in my house but I can see the usefulness of a high powered light in the eyes of an invader to blind or disorient him. It can also be very handy for pest control and varmints (and I wish I'd have had some kind of WML during my encounter with the racoon). Worst case it doesn't get used and it's three ounces of dead weight.

The gun itself seems pretty solid. I probably won't get to take it to the range for another two weeks. But it's nicely appointed for the money. I'm already wanting to get an AR in 9mm to go along with it.

Just a word of caution for when you go to sight in.

Those sights being as far as they are over the bore change the normal formula for sighting in.

My normal sight in is at 25 yards, which puts me close at 100, where I dial in 2" high so I will be dead on at 200.

I have found while sighting in three scopes on two platforms that if one sights in at 25 yards you will be 8" high at 100!

It is due to the distance of the sight plane above the bore.

Dialing in from there is not a problem but it is something to be aware of and expect.

Thanks! Although I will probably pick up some more conventional sights for it.

kyratshooter

I have flip up sights that are similar to your offset sights.

One of the things I am finding is that almost everything made for the AR platform is "indexed" to that platform.

When you fit your normal AR peep sights you will find that most of the red dot optics will automatically co-witness to the irons, meaning that when you look through the iron sights the red dot will sit right on top of the front post once everything is sighted in.

It really is like working with a lego system where everything snaps together, then works perfectly. I am really enjoying a system where one can remove the sights and they return to zero perfectly after hanging out in the ammo pouch for a week. Or where you could change out a red dot and sight it in by indexing to the peep sights instead of heading directly to the range.

It sure does encourage one to "over accessorize".

With a RDS on my Beretta Storm carbine I get just a bit of front sight. With the RDS on my HK USC carbine I get absolute cowitness. If you're working with a non-AR it's kind of "luck of the draw" but as you say, it's an AR-centric market right now.

It's like cutting down on your vodka consumption by switching to bourbon.

I actually walked into a gun shop the other day to see a box of AR mags for $5.99 and realized I was having myself a little hyper-fit like those folks on "Black Friday".

I'll bet I was a sight to see, a frantic looking, bald, fat man in bib overhalls standing there with an arm load of black plastic magazines, trying to beat everyone else to the checkout counter when I was the only person in the store.

I should be ashamed of myself, but they were only $5.99!! And where are you going to find a deal like that again?

Hahaha! I understand your pain. Last week I ordered two Lancer L5 AWF mags from Midway; about an hour later I got a free shipping code good just for the 4th!:jango: I was ticked that the sale started an hour after I placed my order, but once I thought about it for a minute- I ordered two more to get free shipping!:clown: At least I'll soon have for L5s to go with my six Magpul P-Mags.

Well I see you are still not really in the addicted category as yet.

You still know how many magazines you have.

You are not fully engaged until someone asks you how many magazines you have and you shrug you shoulders and whimper "I do'know, forty, maybe fifty!", and you leave out the part about them all being loaded and stacked by the gunsafe.

Rick
07-09-2015, 03:13 PM
(Sigh) You know there really is a lot of truth to that. A couple of weeks ago I heard a small crash (The noise not the moderator) in the gun room. The mags had shifted and the pile unstacked itself.

I guess I have two or three different categories of ammo "storage/caches" 1. The everyday using ammo for when the kids and grand kids show up and want to shoot. 2. My hunting ammo 3. The "other stuff"
Do y'all consider your spare/extra mags to be part of your ammo cache?

kyratshooter
07-09-2015, 06:42 PM
IMHO the spare and extra mags are only a part of the "stash" if they are loaded DS.

I only have two categories; enough and not enough. Problem is I have not discovered what "enough" happens to be.

Does anyone else here spread out their ammo purchases so they will not draw unnecessary attention?

I still remember the look the Fed-X driver game me when he dropped off two cases the day after Sandy Hook! I didn't mind "the look" since it was none of his business anyway, but the fact that he knew and did not seem to approve put me on edge in this "see something, say something" (rat out your neighbor) world.

crashdive123

I spread mine out sort of. I don't use a credit card, and I don't buy ammo on line.

I do and I don't. While I know it is there and available, I don't list (mentally) it as part of the inventory. I also have a shelf with quite a bit on it, but it is the shelf that we grab from for range time. After range time if you shoot 10, replace with 20. If you shoot with 100, replace with 200. When the range shelf gets too full some of it gets moved into the "inventory".

I purchase various ways. Sometimes I'll have my shooting buddies pick me up ammo at the gun show when it is close to what I am getting it for online. I try to buy to make the shipping worth it. I don't really worry about how much I have or who knows it. I have seen folks who committed insurance fraud have the police in my city parade their legally owned and safe stored guns out for the news cameras.

If what they had made the news. I'ma gonna be a big star. LOL

Kind of like when I take my truck in for service. I have an hatchet, bucksaw, and machete in the back drivers side door and A couple of skinners and camp knifes and an old kabar in the other doors. My mechanic is an old country black man named Ben. Ben is as honest as can be. He is the only mechanic I have ever met that will tell you it ended up being way less than he estimated. 7 years now he has never said anything to me about the contents of my truck. But, everybody else who takes their vehicle there has. LOL

Rick

I really give no consideration to my purchases. I buy when and where I find a good deal. Most times that's on the internet. And, yeah, when the UPS guys drops off a couple of wooden crates of Eastern Bloc stuff he usually has a question or two.

On the issue of inventory, I do keep a running list of what I have. It helps me to determine what I need (read that as what I want I guess). I also keep a list of all my weapons with pictures and serial numbers. That way if someone thinks they need them more than me I have a way to prove to LEO and insurance exactly what was taken.

If anyone has weapons that weren't involved in the great canoe disaster then don't forget to add them as a rider to your home insurance. A house fire or tornado could have you starting all over again using your own money. They are generally not covered under your standard policy or covered up to a maximum.

Hugh,,,I don't know....

DSJohnson
07-10-2015, 12:04 PM
It would take me a month to lay hands on all my mags. I have little caches of them in several different places. I started being careful about my ammo purchases after buying several cases of 30 carbine ammo at the Tulsa gun show about 20 years ago. Since then I try to limit my purchases and do them with cash, in person, unless it is for hunting ammo. I have never really worried too much about having a lot of hunting ammo on hand. I have, like two hundred rounds of 30/40 Krag brass, and 400 or 500 rounds of 06 ammo and that much empty brass. Maybe 300 rounds of 22 Hornet, and then 100 round of the Winmag stuff and like 40 rounds of 338 Winmag. I have about 250 rounds of 50/90 Sharps and then a couple of hundred rounds of 45/70 too I think.

One of the reasons I pretty much quit shooting ARs 25 years ago is because of how much it was costing, even back then. I had accumulated about 20 or so 30 round mags and had two ARs, both Colts, one being a really early one from around 1964. Both of my children really enjoyed shooting the ARs and both of them had gotten pretty proficient with them. I found myself spending a $100 or so almost every weekend that we would shoot because they could go through a thousand rounds (between the two of them) in an hour just shooting gongs and rolling tin cans around. They loved doing that but I just could not afford it at that time. At that time I was buying reloaded .223 from the gentlemen who was loading training ammo for the Oklahoma City PD, and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. He charged me $100 per thousand with my brass. A Colt collector offered me a ton of money for the Early Colt so I sold it and when my son graduated from college I gave him the other one and got out of the black gun business. I am an M1A guy anyway. But then a couple of years ago I ended up buying a couple of ARs from a guy going through a divorce. Things have come a long way in the past 25 years and there a ton of add-ons and toys and the slower twist and heavier bullets have made it more interesting. But I still really, really like my M1A.

Phaedrus, I really hope you enjoy your new rifle, it looks sweet. Shoot the daylights out of it and tell us what you think. I still and trying to decide on the whole "off set" iron sight deal and am very interested in other folks experiences and opinions. I find myself being more prone to the glass sights as my eyes continue to age dang it. I have always liked iron better than glass but facts are facts and I can see my targets better with glass these days than iron.

kyratshooter
07-10-2015, 04:21 PM
It is only us old geezers that lament the loss of iron sight abilities.

My son had a Trijicon mounted on his SAW the whole time he was in Iraq and he had 20 year old eyes.

His big brother had me send a 3-9 scope w/rings in the first care package I sent him.

I spend several hours each week at the public range and I can not remember the last time I saw anyone using an iron sighted rifle, young or old.

Kyratshooter,
I know. It almost scares me the dependance our combat forces have on things like batteries, optics and satellite connectivity. I was really surprised when I was speaking to a young Marine (about 16 or 17 years ago now) who was very excited about the fact that his unit was getting "new" optics for their rifles. I had no idea at the time that the Marines had actually accepted the concept and made the transition to optic sights over iron sights. I guess in some circles I really am a geezer but I sure am having a hard time accepting and adapting to it.

kyratshooter
07-10-2015, 08:51 PM
With military scope technology being 200 years old and reflex sight technology being over 100 years old perhaps it is time we accepted the inevitable.

It is no longer new and untested technology.

Phaedrus
07-11-2015, 05:33 AM
I agree! Optics is a fact of life for the military and seems to be an effective force multiplier. I got my first RDS last year and was amazed at how much easier and faster it made getting good hits.

If you want a real treat try buying pouches for all the mags/different calibers.

kyratshooter
07-11-2015, 07:33 PM
Pouches!!!

Three taped together in the rifle and one in each back pocket is 150 rounds!

How much do you need?

Wearing bib overalls you can get two mags in each back pocket. It's called "dressing for success".

Actually I usually carry extras in messenger bags, haversacks, whatever is around.

I am not real big on a combat loadout. Too old for that Walter Middy stuff.

Rick
07-11-2015, 10:59 PM
Well, I started out putting them in my cargo pants pockets but they just pulled my pants down. I can't run with my drawers pulled up so I sure can't run with them around my ankles. Then I tried stickin' 'em in my hoody front pockets. That just pulled my hoody down in front and let me tell you, you won't run but a couple of steps with those things banging against you. It took more than a few deep breaths to get my bearings back. Bib overalls just might work. I could probably rest the butt of the weapon in the hammer loop when I'm not runnin' and gunnin'.

kyratshooter
07-11-2015, 11:56 PM
The bibs are tops for about everything!

You can get two mags of AK or AR in each back pocket, one in each front pocket, even with normal gear in there, and then you still have room to drop you S&W air-weight .38 into the front bib zipper pocket and still have room for your pencil and pocket knife.

They even have the built in suspenders so they can't fall down and trip you.

In this hot weather you can even leave the side buttons open a little and get come air circulation going on. Just remember to button them back up if you head for town.

Rick
