Mrs. Crash is getting more serious about shooting. We go to the range a couple of times a week now. As a result, a lot of ammunition is being used and replaced (shoot 50, buy 100).

I have wanted to learn and start reloading for some time now. I'd like to start acquiring the "stuff" I need.

So ---- where is a good place to start (assume I know nothing about the topic -- you won't be too far off). Books, equipment, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Reloading is often viewed as a major operation, it is not. To first begin helping you, we have to look at what you are reloading. Are we looking at metallic reloading for rifle/pistol or are we looking at shotshell reloading?

If you are going to reload mostly all the same caliber...a progressive press may be in order.

I do things old and slow....load many calibers with a single stage Lee Press, (actually 3) and equipment....Low buck and works.

RCBS gear is good, as are all the rest......just more bucks.

Dillon has some good equipment, but cost more....and are good to really crank out production.

Crash, this is one area where I recommend one not go to the normal internet sources until AFTER they have read the materials available from the major commercial sources.

If you are going to start reloading you will want at least TWO good reloading manuals to use as cross checks for any load you develop anyway, so buying a reloaders guide first is the initial step.

I would suggest that you buy a copy of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook. It has cast bullet information as well as jacketed bullets loads. The first half of the book is a guide to general reloading. Speer, Siarria and Hornady also make good books. The bullet manufacturers do include wider powder selections, while the powder mfgs only want to show their own powders.

The big problem with getting started in reloading right now is scarcity of pistol powders. It is still impossible to obtain locally where I am and equally difficult to access online. However, if you can find a source .38/9mm/.45acp can usually be loaded using a single powder that works for all three. Having access to a reloading manual will allow you to compare useful powders so you can snag types that will work when you see them on the shelves.

Once you start reloading you will discover that there are many myths about various cartridges, their capabilities and performances. It is a real educational experience and will make you wonder where some folks come up with some of their goof-ball ideas.

You will also get various opinions on single stage, progressive and multiple stage presses, types of dies blah..blah..blah..

Do not allow yourself to get overcomplicated at the start. Get a single stage Lee press for $30 and a first set of carbide dies in the caliber you shoot most, along with the basic gear needed (Lee makes starter kits). Learn to make cartridges on that set with the intention of stepping up to a better outfit quickly. The single stage press will always be a useful tool whatever you move too latter.

I would suggest that you go for the .38spl first, since that will take some of the pressure off the wallet instantly and will give you a fast pay out on the equipment. The cost of the reloading gear will be about the same as 4-5 boxes of factory .38 spl.

In addition, .38spl is the easiest pistol cartridge to reload, and the most forgiving.

You will want to start casting bullets soon too, but that is a different thread. The slugs are your most expensive store bought component. Eliminating their cost will get your cost per unit down to around 5 cents per shot.

I would advise getting in a PM flow with Natertot and let him set you up a "starter kit".

Casting your own slugs and reloading your own shells is a uniquely satisfying experience. There is nothing like realizing you are counting buckets of cartridges instead of boxes.

(This is scaring me) Kyratshooter said it all right, even the same dang order as I would have said it and I agree with his recommendations on doing the reading first and which ones to start with. Also even though he did not mention it, I think there is value in buying some older editions of the same manuals just so you can get a "feel" for how product liability issues have influenced reloading. I also agree with keeping it simple to start with. I actually started out with a Lee "Handloader" kit for 30 WCF on my kitchen table when I was about 12 years old. Like he said start with simple. common straight cases. 38 Spl and 44 Spl/44Mag are super simple and very easy to set up and learn on. Initially I would also recommend to stay away from buying used stuff, even die sets until you have a better understanding of how things work.

You are correct about the liability issues that have affected reloading DSJ.

I have a Speer #1 manual that is from the days before the .243, .308, .223 or .44 magnum were around.

That book has starting loads for 30-06 that are 10% over max in the new books!

And then, strangely enough, 38 special factory equivalent loads are the same now as they were in 1925, and many of the same powders are still in use!

I love reloading. I just wish this shortage of components would come to an end. I have plenty of materials for general use, I just hate to use them up knowing They can not be replaced. That is one reason I have purchased surplus ammo when I find it cheap, even though I might be able to reload the same caliber.

Handguns to start, but probably everything under the sun eventually.

Thanks Krat - just ordered the Lyman book and two others.

I don't know what all books you have ordered, but the only two I recommend for metallic reloading is Lee and Lyman. All the other one's (Speer, Hornady, etc) are manufacturers of reloading components and their manuals are biased to their own products which lead to limited load recipes. Between Lee and Lyman, you will get every load that the others list and the great thing is, Lee and Lyman reloading manuals are the cheapest two on the market!

If you do Shotshell, pick up Lyman's 5th edition of shotshell reloading. That thing is literally the bible of shotgun shells.

I will post more later, I gotta go to class!

Okay, for more information and everything I am putting in this post is geared towards metallic reloading. Do not apply this to shotshell.

As it has been suggested, for starting out on metallic reloading, it is best to begin with straight wall cartridges. They are simpler to reload because you need not worry about neck sizing and body sizing. .357, .38spl and .30 carbine are great straight walls to start on because they are longer and are easier to handle.

When it comes to the basics of reloading, there really isn't a lot that you are doing. All you are really doing is getting rid of a spent primer, installing a new primer, adding a little powder, and putting a bullet on top. You happen to resize the case in the process of doing those things. I tend to polish my brass in between removing old primer and inserting a new one. Some don't clean their brass at all, some will just wipe it out with a patch on a jag. That comes down to more personal preference and I like to be thorough and consistent.

As far as equipment I am a Lee guy because I am one of their dealers and I think they have the least expensive equipment that is worth owning. As far as details on which pieces I recommend, send a PM. I don't want to be pushing products I sell on the forum. One Lee piece that in my opinion is not worth owning whatsoever is their beam scale. It is horrible. I have warned people that it is horrible and they still buy it. Then they come back and say "it is horrible, can I have my money back?"..... I use a RCBS beam and I love it. I also have a Cabela's electronic scale, but I do not measure powder on it. (I can tell you the story of Green-Dot and static electricity another time)

One thing you will need (Lee doesn't make one, despite my constant pleading) is a bullet puller. Mine is a hammer type made by Frankford Arsenal that I picked up at a LGS for around $20. It does the job for the few times I need it. If you go the polishing route, you will need the tumbler and associated stuff. I started using a cheap tumbler from Harbor Freight that cost $40 about 6 years ago and built a separator out of "junk" hanging around. That tumbler is now on the fritz and now is $55. I am considering this http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item/00038502024/Tumbler-Kit-(Tumbler-and-Separator-and-Media-and--and-Brass-Polish) from Mid South Shooters Supply (No affiliation) since it comes with everything needed to start tumbling for $73. That is a hard value to beat and Mid South has gotten my money many times in the past.

Everything else that I can suggest would be LEE and I would rather you contact me via PM if you are interested in my input on that.

Agree 100% about the bullet puller. You should have one.

Books - they are all pretty good but strangely will have much different recipes for the same bullet/powder/primer mix

Start with a single stage and get used to the different steps and build confidence. Later on you will upgrade to a progressive (Dillion is my favorite) and really crank out some ammo.

On the down side, you wont save money because you will be shooting more, as if any could possibly consider that as a "down side" :gunsmilie:

I still like this analogy.......

This came from another forum, wife's point of view;

QUOTE
No, you can not save money reloading!

First you start out getting a cheap 12g press off eBay. Then you need some new charge bars and powder bushings and other extra stuff. Then you decide you need a 20g one too. . Then since you want to shoot your reloads, you need more clays and something to toss them. (And your wife needs a couple nice double barrels so she can shoot with you)

Then you pick up a cheap rifle press, which leads to die sets and scales and calipers and trimmers and stuff I don't even know what it is. Then you need more room, so take over the area that was suppose to be your wife's big storage closet. Which needs shelves and a small gun cabinet and other stuff. And then you need a few more presses so you don't have to be changing die sets all the time . . .

And of course, you need to "test"; what you load, so you need a chronometer, and wind tester, and a thing to hold the gun in place while you shoot. Hopefully you already own a skid steer if you decide you now need a shooting berm in the back yard. (I love this part, "Oh Honey I need a skid steer")

But it still does not end! Once you have developed loads for the guns you have, you start looking for new guns in calibers you don't have die sets for, and soon you need a big safe, and then two years later you need ANOTHER big safe, and then you need a bigger room so you remodel the upstairs after son moves out for an even bigger reloading room (which you discover is not quite big enough once you move everything in). And finally, since you "reload"; and it's cheaper, you shoot about 3 times the ammo you would if you purchased it.

Disclaimer - I am glad my husband has found a hobby he likes, and I'm glad he keeps me well stocked with 9mm and .357 rounds. But like most hobbies, you don't really "save" money. We'd have a lot more money if we never got into this gun stuff to begin with LOL!!

I still think, if you are actually going to be shooting more than 20 or 30 rounds of center-fire ammo a week it is cheaper to reload than to buy new ammo, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF MILITARY "SURPLUS/FOREIGN CONTRACT" CALIBERS, that is. I agree 100% that I can buy 7.62X39MM, 5.56 NATO, and 7,62 NATO way cheaper than I can load it.
40 years ago when regular wheel weights still made good pistol bullets and pure lead easily available thru scrap and plumbing resources I could reload 44 Russ/Spec/Mag for less than a nickle a round. Not counting my labor or the investment of the case. also if I loaded my ammo to common 44 Spec limits I have gotten 25 or more uses out of a single piece of brass before trimming was required. WW and Federal large pistol primers, if you bought a thousand at a time cost just a fraction under a penny a piece. Using Hercules Unique that I was paying $8.99 per pound and using a 12 grain load I would get about 575 or so rounds out of a pound of powder (more or less) So 2 cents for my powder, a penny for my primer, 1/2 penny for bullet lube and case lube. I never counted the cost of the electricity or propane used for making the bullets. So I always allowed that my 44 shooting cost me about a nickle a round . I really like Hornady's 265 grain semi jacketed bullet and at one time they cost 7 cents a piece after taxes, so if I went with a jacket bullet my reloads cost me 11 cents a round versus 22 or 23 cents per round for "factory" ammo. Now if and when I can find primers they cost me close to a dime a piece. Unique, again when I can find it, is 18 to 20 dollars a pound so that makes my per round cost 3.5 cents. Lead is getting very rare, wheel weights are some weird alloy that is very brittle and really "leads up" even very smooth "seasoned" barrels. So nowadays I figure it costs me right around 15 cents per round to shoot my 44 and if I am using store bought jacket bullets add at least another 15 cents to that.

Bottom line:
My reloaded lead bullet 44 WCFs (that I use when I do some cowboy action shooting) cost me about 16 or 17 cents apiece versus 40 to 45 cents per piece for new "Cowboy" loads. My 44 mag cost me about the same unless I am loading store bought jacketed bullets which makes the cost per round go to about 95 cents a pop. 30/40 Krag and 30/06 cost me about 45 to 55 cents per round to reload depending on what bullet and powder I am using.

You all have given me some good information. Thank you. Nate has given me some great info as well.

I'll start reading when I get the Amazon delivery. It'll probably be a slow process, but one that I think I will enjoy learning and doing.

Some say that reloading is simply not worth their time and effort, which it might not be if they are making big money and will accept the mediocre accuracy of factory rounds. And if they are not really shooting much in the first place.

In the center fire rifle hunting calibers I generally do not consider money saving as my primary motivation to reload. I am after a specific accuracy expectation for the individual rifle. That expectation is beyond what factory ammo can offer.

Once you have seen a .308 put three shots into 3/8" at 100 yards, and know the same gun will not do better than 8" with factory ammo,it suddenly becomes worth your time and effort.

Even then I can save money over the cost of factory. Especially in the standard calibers. I can reload .30 caliber in whatever chambering for $0.35 cents per round as compared to $0.75- $1 per shot for most factory.

It is in the pistol calibers that the real money saving is a concern, so I cast the slugs for pistol.

Lead is still available at most scrap centers and I buy 100 pounds at a time.

The fast firing rifles are a completely different matter. While I can reload .223 for $0.15 per shot the effort is just not worth it when I can buy surplus for $0.23 cents per shot. It is the same with AK fodder and the 7.62x54 MN stuff.

In contrast, I do reload 5.56, but that is soft point ammo for hunting and for extreme accuracy in the Savage rifle.

I do not even own a set of reloading dies in 7.62x39 and have no intention of doing so.

As is normal, this thread has gone all different directions, which is probably not encouraging to the person that just wants to know how to reload .38 specials for $2.50 a box.

Kyrat has some good points in his previous post.

The other area where you will save money is specialty loads. I can reload 38 special and 357 Magnum shotshells for one tenth of the price it cost to buy them. same thing with self defense ammo. I can load most self defense pistol ammo for one fourth of the cost of buying new. that is where I find the most money is saved.
