View Full Version : How would you pick good "Bug Out Buddies"??

My "Bug Out Buddy", a family member, recently passed and so now I am faced with an extended family who thinks my interest in anything survival is just a big waste of time at best, and almost hateful statements suggesting a "lack of faith" at worst. So I am considering looking to friends as possible "bug out buddies" if/when the occasion arises. The problem is I've learned the hard way, through a variety of experiences, not to be a particularly trusting person. So how to I pick friends that I could count on when times get tough?? What qualities would I look for in a potential long term situation?? I'm sure I'm not the only one, with survival interests, that is facing this situation. So I hope we can come up with some ideas that would not only help me but help others who find themselves in similar circumstances. Advice, ideas, and suggestions are more than welcome.

Tough one....been loosing my hunting partners last few years, and frankly not to many other people I care to go hunting with.

Family is all over the map, so DW and I are about it......and don't fill family on plans....for the reasons you brought up.

Why are you "bugging out", where are you bugging out too, how are you bugging out, and why are you only concerned with one buddy?

You just going to pick up and leave everyone you know and/or love to die and rot?

Mine are my friends and family who would give shelter to one another if an emergency forced one or more of us to leave our homes. To me, it's just that simple. They are self selecting in that way and as dependable as the strength or weakness of the personal ties I maintain.

Jeez tough one. Wife number 1. Good buddy of 30 yrs 2. I'ld trust my tribe. Crash knows them. Buncha nuts, but they'ld go to the mat for anybody in the circle. 50 plus. And if you can figger how I collected that entourage please tell my shrink. He'ld like to know.

I think raising a family has given me a different concept of the "bug out" as a tactical ploy.

I do not see the "big one" happening and running me into the woods to live like a savage. Too old, too broke down and on too many meds to last that life more than a week or two, besides not being able to carry the pack out of sight of the road.

And since I already live a pretty rural existence, and am living in the spot the kids will run too if the rest of the world checks out and we are still here for the crap to hit the propeller, I will just sit and wait for the "bug out buddies" I raised to arrive.

We'll build a fire, make some smores, try to keep the grandkids from drowning in the lake and see what happens in a few days.

Sorry for your loss.

Finding somebody that shares your interests and concerns can be tough sometimes. You/they don't want to come off as being "that person" that others whisper about. Stick with family if you can. Bring them along gently and slowly.

You are making the assumption that you will be sitting comfortably at home when something bad happens. What happens if you are at the store or someone has taken a trip to the next town? You will most likely be a victim of circumstance when something bad happens. I was 30 miles away when a tornado ripped through our town. The state police closed the town off. My job was to find my way home, if there was a home, and find my family. That's a pretty anxious time when you don't even know if they are alive.

Do you have a communications plan? A way to contact each of your family members? Do you have a place to meet away from home if something happens? Your plan should include all of these things.

Agreed! We have bought several "Rite-In-The-Rain notebooks, every one will be an emergency manual for a family member in case of a disaster. In them we will list places to meet up, among other information. Several meet-up locations will be listed in case some are inaccessible. Remember, survival cannot be planned out, you can only prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. It is always an unplanned disaster or even a tragedy. I'm sorry your family isn't with you on this as they need to think about crap that can happen. Colorado has had a bad history of forest fires, tornadoes, and even flooding in many areas. People need to think about those things and realize that it can happen to anybody, even them. I remember seeing the aftermath of a really bad train derailment in Colorado Springs once. What if the cars were carrying really nasty chemicals? Once, while living there, we were evacuated from our home for several hours while some people worked on a problem involving large Propane gas tanks at a near-by business. You need to be prepared. Perhaps trying to reach your extended family and making them understand the possible dangers is where and what you should be concentrating on. Unprepared people make up the most tragic statistics....:1:

Sometimes kyratshooter can be a little rough around the edges with his answers, but most of the time, he gets to the main point. Spot on right here! For me, Family is number 1. I am not going to run off into the woods leaving my family. My immediate family (wife-kids) are most important. First plan is to get together, then whatever we do afterwards, we do together. The next plan would be to meet up with extended family. My sister lives real close, and my brother a little farther. My FIL and MIL are not too far either, along with BIL and SIL. To me, it doesn't really matter if they support me in prepping now (they all do, and do it themselves), when/if it all goes south, they will support me then.

Now, if you are looking for someone to "practice" with....that is different. You don't need someone that you can trust...(to an extent). You just need someone that you get along with, is about equally skilled (or can get up to speed quickly), and won't steal all your stuff when your back is turned. The only way to find someone like that is to invite people you know and take them camping. Just like dating, you will eventually find that special someone. With my involvement in Boy Scouts, I have found many adults that I enjoy spending time around a campfire with. They all live in the neighborhood. Also, don't rule out the possibility that your new friend might have 4 legs and sheds.

I have a bug in buddy. If the S ever hits the fan, he is bringing all of his supplies and his family to my place and we are going to load the rest of the guns and hole up!No plans of bugging out here!
But the concept is the same, he is a friend that I can absolutely trust with anything, thats what you need for a bug out or bug in buddy! Trust is more important than skills in this case. I can teach him the skills, but you can't teach undying loyalty! Luckily in this case he does have sufficient skills as well!

Except for immediate family in the house, and 4 close relatives living in various other parts of the country, extended family, even with the same name are NOT welcome. But I have a few really good friends and their loved ones whom I'd welcome in a heartbeat. They know to come here. I'm not going anywhere. Like KYRat, I'm just getting too old to be running around the woods like a savage. If forced to relocate, I do have a friend's place about 50 miles north of here, and another about 30 miles south. It's sort of a reciprocal arrangement even though the guy to the south is not quite as "prepared" as I'd like. Any port in a storm though.

The more I build supply and maintain my BOL...(The Place) I see the fallacy of staying anywhere for any longer than a couple of weeks, with a couple of people....Simply the ability and shelf life of supplies.

Bunch of freeloaders show up....?...All bets are off.

So you work and build and supply your location,.... the rest of family goes to Disney World, brags about loosing money in Vegas, drives the latest SUV and has the latest phone, and children in rehab....
SHTF.... he/her/they show up in drive way and says...."When is supper,.... got any beer?

Actually if you have a Place...cottage, cabin, snowbird condo in Florida, lake house.....you will experience this....

Already getting the calls "Letting you know my vacation time is second week in July....can you meet us at your place for a week or so?...I need to put in for vacation time?"

Just saying....

Won't be able to make it, but enjoy yourselves. While you're there please mow the field. Also need about five cords of wood....chainsaw is in the shed.

I don't agree at all! I have 2 friends that I trust more than family, but if you have never had a friend like that I guess you wouldn't understand! None of my family are prepared for squat, no supplies, no guns, no nothing, so yeah that will work!
I have known my friends most of my life and they have proven over and over that they have my back, so you go with family and I'll stick with my fiends and well both be happy! Just because somebody is family doesn't mean they are loyal, quite the opposite most of the time!
In fact, my family to this day try to use me all the time, my friends ask for nothing!

Certainly. I, as I assume most of us, have family we wouldn't consider at all. In my circumstance though the only family I have within a thousand miles are my kids, a distant aunt and a distant cousin, neither of whom I know well or hang out with much. My aunt is pretty medically fragile and my cousin would drive me battey in a day with his incessant chatter and opinionated stances. Never been married, never had kids, thinks he knows it all. I'd probably off him myself in the first week. Also, most of my buddies would be on their own. The ones who would come to me for help would not be able to pull their own weight so would not be welcome in most SHTF scenarios. The ones who could pull their own weight will be doing the same things I am at their own locations. So I go back to me and my kids only, who are both pretty capable.

I have a friend like that....I married his sister. Everyone has family members that are a little untrustworthy. I am a little lucky in that most of my family and my wife's family is very trustworthy. They don't all have much skill, but some do. I guess we all have to answer the question at some time...do we take in family or leave them to fend for themselves. This is a personal question and everyone will probably answer it differently.

I try not to look at them like family in a SHTF situation. Simply try to look at their integrity and loyalty. Family members that have always ask to borrow money, and not paid it back when they get it would leave the list first, lack of integrity! Loyalty is hard to prove for most people so that would narrow it down quick for me. No family except for the girls, and my buddy and his wife and daughter. My other buddy is in Oklahoma and would probably bug in but if he wants to come to my place, he would be welcome!
Two friends are it for me! All of my family is in Oklahoma and not one has come to visit since I have been here, no reason to start now........LOL My 2 buddies are closer to me than family and their families as well!

About 5 or 6 guys were already there and the party was on....one big guy started beating the tar out of a smaller guy.....

My buddy started to get up...little guy was taking a bad beating........Bar tender says, "Sit back down, they are brothers, hate each other and beat up on each other all the time......But try step in,.... ALL of them will jump on you".

I'm sure if a some kind of SHTF happens this dynamic will also apply.
