though i don,t have tv i have seen some snipets of survival shows. beargryls,survivalman,
and one with joe teti& staurt something. some things they all teach the same locations
will vary. jungle,woodlands,desert and so on. any how what have you learned and which show is best in your opinion and why?

Why?
Because we don't make B.S based Survival shows, but teach REAL survival down this way.
Anyone who thinks a TV production is worth discussing as 'real' survival is kidding themselves. It's all based around ratings and how much money the production company can sell it for. Most people die in REAL survival situations.

I still like the original Survivor Show.
They are in the 30th season.....so have out smarted, out played, out lasted all the others put together.

The biggest thing I have learned (really already knew it) is that they will script and show crap that will get them ratings. These shows, as may are (gotta pay the bills) are not about survival, but rather attracting an audience so that ad revenue will come in. As a Capitalist I see nothing wrong with that.
The problem comes in where people are not able to separate the wheat from the chaff and take what they see on TV as the final word on the subject. We see it often on this forum and others like it. Sadly, people have been injured or worse because they were not able to separate the skills from the glitz.
There are things that can be gleaned from these shows, but to the inexperienced they can cause problems.

In my opinion the only one of these staged shows that has any reality to it is Naked and Afraid.
They put their contestants, usually non-experts, out there with no equipment and leave them there long enough to die.
All the other shows have a 2 day or one week window, the contestants or "experts" have selected gear available and there is always the search for rescue, which is scheduled and on not too far away.
I feel the biggest shortcoming of N&A is that they place the contestants in areas that are too harsh for actual survival. The contestants then have no ability to use the knowledge and skills they have, since there are no resources available.

I believe that CBS began the "Survivor" shows about 15 years ago +/-, not 30 years ago.
Yeah, they're all scripted long before they begin shooting film... or bits and bytes.

TV is measured in "Seasons".....so 30 seasons is 15 years @ two seasons per year.
Still waiting for my call.....Of course I could run around more back 15 years ago.

I haven't seen any of them either. I think I watch maybe 2 hours of TV a week, if that. A little more if the Pats are playing.
Someone would have to pay me an awful lot of money to sit through one of those survival show things.
Got better things to do.

I'll watch just about any of them. Some I watch for the giggles, others for the educational aspect.
I really like "Fat Guys in the Woods" with. Creek Stewart.
Les Stroud, Cody Lundin, Dave Cantebury and Matt Graham rank among my favorites as well.
And let's not forget Dick Proeneke (sp?) of "Alone in the Wilderness".

I'm old fashioned I suppose. Once upon a time for many, many years the teevee season was nine months long. Approximately first of September through May. Then the summer was for reruns.
As I only watched 1 episodes of the original "Survivor" about 15 years ago and never watched another reality show throughout, I didn't realize "Survivor" had two separate shows during a "season."
Guess I just ain't up to speed. ;)
No matter, all the "reality' shows are scripted from the get-go.

I watched the whole first season of Survivor when it first came out. It was the first of its kind and at the time, very exciting. Now I haven't had cable since then and don't miss it. So, I've never seen any of those other survival type of shows.

Probably true, but his skill and knowledge doesn't diminish because of that.
I think it's unfortunate these days that people want 'entertainment' rather than facts, when it comes to true outdoor survival.
Modern television has made the subject a joke, yet people discuss it all as if it's all real, as if 'survival' is a game, to switch on and off, when it pleases people.
true survival situations kill people, and it's not fun, or fancy, or a game, or a show.
people die all the time down this way, because they watch too much TV.
TV doesn't ever show how quick nature will kill anyone, regardless of their job, religion, military training, age etc

As far as simplicity and practicality, I think I like Creek Stewart on "Fat Guys in the Woods" the best. I believe most people lost in the woods would find themselves in a situation more like he presents than most others.
The most hard core would be Ed Stafford on "Marooned." He stayed 60 days on an uninhabited tropical island with no tools, clothing, nor any other provisions other than a camera to record his stay.
My favorite is Ray Mears and his various shows. He presents skills with the reasoning and history behind them without all of the drama.

I don't think this is a very good generalization. Of course they are watching them for entertainment. That is to say, they are not watching them for facts or to learn how to survive in the wilderness. They are on tv FOR ENTERTAINMENT. If you are watching them in order to learn how to survive any situation, then you are the one who would seem a bit out there.

so, i just watched the first episode(season one, episode one)...nope, it was season two. of naked and afraid. turns, out, they are on youtube.
anyway, they are in the rain forest and they are getting eaten alive by mosquitoes every night. and im left thinking, why not dig hole to sleep in? i get it that when it rains, it will fill up with water. i have experienced that one in the field... but, it is so much easier to dig a hole, cover it and line it to keep the bugs out than it is to build an above ground shelter and keep the bugs out. and from what i saw, they werent getting any sleep... because of the bugs.
i used to spend a lot of nights by myself in a swamp, and thats how i slept. dig a hole, line it with leaves and such so i dont shiver all night long, and lay sticks over the top of it to make the "roof". then just pile on lots and lots of leaves, bark, etc, whatever i can find. from the outside looking in, it looks like a big pile of debris. leave one side open and i crawl in. once im in, i pull some leaves and such around the opening. its pretty quick, pretty cozy, keeps the bugs out, and you would be surprised at how much it has to rain before it gets wet inside.
maybe im missing something... fear of predators?
ETA: then again, just thought about roots. they can be a real pain.
and i just realized that i watched season 2 episode one.

First off, I don't watch or own a TV. Thats clears up the "if you" statement. if you'd written "if one watches", then it wouldnt need clarifying.
Les Hiddens was entertaining, but was always 100% factual. His style was total documentary, when it came to survival, and survival tips, he also used lessons from history, same as Ray Mears does every know and then. A media production can very much be both entertaining and a learning experience. Unfortunately, from the few I've seen being watched by other people, (or told about by other people), the documentary has gone out the window, and it's all BS and nakedness, in order to entertain.
You Tube has many "How to make an X,Y,Z" style videos, which both entertain and teach. OK, I agree the teaching may then be total theory, and would then need to be turned into practical, but at least the theory has been laid out 100% correctly, and someone may learn from it, and be ENTERTAINED at the same time.
Anyway, I;m not getting into online arguments with anyone, just saying that TV standards seem to have dropped world wide is all. Hence the reason I haven't watched if for over 4 years.

Just kidding of course, but you have to admit that you may not be the best critic of shows since you haven't seen one in four years.
...and the word "you" can be both singular and plural. I believe hers was the latter. Funny how the English language can separate so many people. We rarely use the word "one" to signify the individual unless it's in numbers. We almost always use the word "you". However, we also use the word "you" to signify "anyone" when speaking in generalities, which I believe she was.

Ray Mears or Les Stroud is prolly the most "realistic" and useful information. On Naked and Afraid it's always "I am a survival instructor, been doing this for 12 years" but then they end up half starved and sick from drinking contaminated water. Why doesn't anyone ever go for the tubers? Almost every wilderness area has tubers and/or edible vegatation, but they rarely eat 'em. They would rather eat bugs LOL

I've not seen a lot of survival shows since I don't have cable tv or satellite service - just on the old antenna here. But I did buy a dvd series of Dual Survival with Cody and Dave - thought it was pretty good but I sit there dissecting the show and immediately find better ways of doing things. For example, on one episode they get stuck in an airboat in the everglades and they hike through the water to high ground carrying a bucket full of holes with fire in it. To purify water, they kill and eat a snake and use its skin to heat the water in. I would have carved wooden plugs for the holes in the bucket to seal it so I could have boiled a bucket full of water !
I saw Bear Grylls build his camp on the bank of a rain forest stream that showed signs of recent flash flooding where he could get washed away in the night, then hike back into the woods to find dry fuel to build a fire just to build the fire where he found the wood and then burn his hands trying to carry the fire to camp. Why not just carry the wood to camp and then build the fire ? Can you spell stupid ?
