Is not the wolf, and the howling of wolves the symbol of wilderness? Is not the classic hand wrought log cabin another symbol of wilderness?

This forum keeps coming back over and over to: Dick Proenneke and his: "One mans Wilderness"; Also to the Save the Wolves.

Is there a connection to the "Country Western" song's and the man in prison being haunted by the whistle of the train.

Are not both the man in a concrete prison and the man imprisoned by debt, employment, and the "Madison Ave. fabricated formula for happiness", both longing for the same FREEDOM..........???:rolleyes:

Wow, I've never thought of it that way. I think you are on to something. I know that many times in the Military I felt like I was imprisioned and I longed to escape. I think Thats why I made my home up here. No when I'm feeling overwhelmed I can excape very quickly. In a matter of minutes I can be totally alone in the wilderness. I pray I never have to move outside. I dont think I could handle it down there now that I've lived here.

I think what's his name there...Alexander Supertramp, thought so. But,well, yeah, you know, if you walk away from your debt, etc, they don't shoot you. They might throw you into one of those concrete prisons if the debt is a tax debt. Then you'd notice some subtle differences, like being told when to eat, what to eat, when to change your clothes, when to make your bed, not to look the guards in the eye, when you can use the phone and when you can't. When you can see your family and when you can't. Just little things like that.

Outside of prison you make your own prison. If I wanted to live there I would, I don't so I won't.

Yeah, I had to wonder when I read that article about Snipes this morning. Is Wesley not celebrity enough or is tax evasion a more serious crime than say..murder or child molestation? and is it's the second one, why's Willie Nelson still out walking around? (You go Willie, without meaning to spark a political debate I think the man should be your president)

I think our American culture romanticizes Wilderness Idealism and individuality. Early American history is all about striking out into the Wilderness and making it on your own terms. It is a prevalent myth that permeates our psyche. However, it is just a myth.

Very few people do strike out on their own into the Wilds for an extended period. And, those that actually make it, and truly live in wild places on their own are even rarer- that is why Dick Proenneke's story is so fascinating.

There are more stories of failed and busted dreams (Chris McCandless, etc...) out there than there are guys like Dick who actually make it. Heck, even Thoreau only lived on Walden Pond for about a year or so.

For us modern folks it is easy to dream and pretend that we have the salt, swagger and vigor to make it and be "Wilderness Survivalist" but very few of us even have what it takes to try...even fewer of us have what it takes to thrive the way Proenneke did.

But, we can buy into the myth, and pretend. We can wear our Carhartts and BDU's, and wear stout boots and stout belts with multi-tools and knives. We can shoot a deer from our tree stand and feed our families with it, and we can walk around with a false sense of security that we are Woodsmen and we have what it takes to make it- out there.

However, it is just a facade. Few of us really want to forgo civilization and creature comforts. Few of us really want to be black sheep and go against the grain. Few of us are true individuals. We all join here together online and chit chat, and trick ourselves into believing we have what it takes. But, until we can summon up the cojones to really walk into the wilds, we will just have to pass the time fueling our fantasies and making heroes out of people like Dick and passing judgement on guys like McCandless- that is far easier than living hand to mouth in the Wilderness. Civilization isn't our prison- fears and ego are our shackles.

My grandfather and his father-in-law along with my dad, when he was a kid dropped timber and hand made railroad ties for the coal mines. That's how he earned his keep. I've always said I'm not made of the same stuff. My father spent 18 months in Europe during WWII as did many of my uncles (one being POW). I've always said I'm not made of the same stuff. I have no false beliefs that I can live like Hopeak or WildWoman or Klkak. I can't. I don't want to and maybe that's driven by the realization that I can't.

I don't consider it a weakness or fault. It's just me. I genuinely want to live where I live and do what I do. I enjoy going to the woods when I want to go but it's always on my terms.

And Montana, some of us are here not because we dream of that life but because we want to keep the skills and the knowledge alive. I want my sons and grandsons to know which foods they can eat and how to make shelter. My grandfather and my father did. It's just part of the heritage I want to pass along.

Rick, I defiently didn't mean to imply that there is a "weakness or fault" by not living a life like Dick. I was just commenting on why he is a recurring theme. Heck, as survivalist we are far more likely to "survive" if we continue our current lifestyles, than we are if we followed the path of Proenneke or McCandless.

Montana Musher: Nice Post, And I would say that "IF" and it is a big "IF" someone wanted to do it, even if they fail, it is a great adventure. Helen Keller: "Life is either a daring Adventure or nothing".

The remote wilderness land is available. But it is expensive just getting to and from remote sites. And the cost of getting the basics into remote sites is expensive. But it can be done it is just very hard, and very expensive. It cost me about $23,000.00 to build my cabin on Lake Clark, and I owned two air craft at the time. And Avgas was $1.10 for red and $1.30 for green. It is about $7.80 for red now. More in the bush.

I agree to that. A couple of years ago I bought my place here in Montana, 22 acres, surrounded by National Forest which backs up to Yellowstone Park. If you walk out my back door heading south you won't encounter a paved road for over 90 miles. I could barely afford it at the time- but it was my dream spot. So, I got a second job (besides having my own outfitting business) and started having to be at work around the clock to pay for my dreams of a simple lifestyle! Now, with fuel prices about to break me (I drive 28 miles one-way to town...10 miles of it rough dirt road) I decided I needed yet another job to keep living the dream! So, currently I have three jobs, I am at work (not always hard at it..hee hee) all the time just to pay for this remote homestead I sleep in. To add to the absurdity...a good part of the road to my house is seasonal access only. So, for alot of the winter I have to run my sleddogs to get to my truck to go to work! They then hang out in my dogboxes waiting for me to return...LOL.
Someday, however I will have it paid off, then I can live the simple life. Until then I gotta get to work.

this is a catch 22 for me, when i was rodeoing i lived in the back of my truck didn't own a dag gone thid cept a cuople of hats a change of shirts and my bull riding equipment, the absolute freedom to do what i want when i want did not answer to any one, most of the time i loved it, sometimes i spent a birthday or christmas all alone, now i have responsibilities, homestead 80 acres horses and a wife to support mostly debt free other than mortgage but i look around at all the stuff in the garage and barn and think what happened i remember when every thing i owned fit into the back of my truck but i also love having my property and my wife and my life, but who knows if something ever happened to her i might trade it all for a boat...
