Keywords. Once he typed in "silver" the ad program Chris employs (like most) will select keywords to display ads to the site. But cookies also will do it as described above.

Seems like a bit of a liability, you ask me. You'd come out of work and find your chinese motor scooter with all the silver plating chipped off.

But if you use ccleaner, be careful with it's registry repair tool. If your registry is too badly damaged in certain ways (by malware, etc.) but still works, fixing it can break it. This goes for essentially all registry repair tools, and should be considered more than anything a sign that it was a miracle that it was still working before the fix, but it's something to be aware of.

The browser/tracking cleanup has never caused me any trouble though. It can also improve disk performance if you never clean your browser cache.

Also remember that that will only help with browser side tracking such as that driven by or augmented by cookies. It won't mitigate methods like browser fingerprinting, IP tracking and correlation between them.

Yep. Every word that's typed can be a keyword. Companies actually bid on keywords. The highest bidder will have their ad appear. For example, Target (watch their ads start to appear) might bid .01 cent for every appearance and .03 for every click through (when someone actually clicks on the ad). Walmart might bid on the same words but bid .02 for every appearance and .03 for every click through. The ad company (I used Ad Aware for awhile) will then place a Walmart ad every time the keyword they bid on is typed.

You can also sign up with ad companies and apply to different retailers to show their ads. If they accept you then they will display ads where ever you put them on your web site. There is a subscription fee for these types of ads.

If someone is interested in the ad and clicks on it then Chris will make money for the click. But don't go clicking a bunch of ads thinking you'll help him because those companies watch the click throughs very close. If they even suspect the click throughs are artificially being inflated in an effort to increase income they can and will ban you for life.
