View Full Version : Anyone have experience with Sling pacs?

Anyone have experience w/ the single strap slings? Or good common sense about such things?

Due to issues with the neck and right shoulder, I can't do a two strap pack.

I've seen the "Plan B" sling pack reviewed on line... lotsa pockets and such, but no one really discussed the bag's weight limits.

I'm also curious as to whether all those dividers and pockets are really better than a 'bucket' approach. Esp, since I'm looking to load some of the smaller needfuls on my belt in pouches. (looking at some of the padded 'battle' belts - open to suggestions there, too.)

I've considered an 18th C. style snap sack (my wife sews) but not sure how heavy a canvas I should consider.


As far as BOB's go, I can't walk far and I can't walk fast (Arthritic hip), so I'm inclined to stick by my Suburban if given the option, or go find a friendly tree and hug it till rescued. Otherwise I'd need a 72 hour bag to cover the distance most would in 24 hrs. :tongue_smilie:

I know that you said you can't use a two strap pack and the reasons why in your intro, so let me ask.... Have the two strap packs you have tried had a waist belt? If not, you may want to test drive something with a good quality waist belt. With a proper fitting pack and waist belt there will be very little weight carried on your shoulders. The weight is on your hips. I would think that a sling pack would give you similar problems but just on one side at a time.

I have hiked with a shoulder bag (not a sling pack) and when it was loaded I used the belt hookup on the back to relieve some of the weight from my shoulder. The one I use is the Maxpedition Jumboversa Pack. http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/JUMBO-VERSIPACK-p6.htm

I've also had multiple neck and shoulder surgeries yet still manage a two strap pack just fine. Crash gave you the secret. Keep the weight on your hips and use the shoulder straps to balance the load. Also, make certain you have good pads on your shoulders for added comfort. It just might work for you.

Guys, thanx for the suggestions.

Among my various nuisances, I have a bone spur at C3 pushing on a nerve. It's not just weight, but contact /rubbing and etc. as well, the nerve doesn't like to be bothered, some days just wearing a scarf is too much. I'm on a muscle relaxer and pain reducer (Flexeril and Hydrocondone-Acetomenophen) looked into surgery, but the surgeon said it'd take a 'keyhole' procedure and its too high, the neck muscles don't like to be disturbed and it'd be a year of pain before I felt human again. Apparently for me, it'd be a last resort kinda thing.

Fortunately, I can handle a fair amount of weight on the other shoulder w/out difficulty.

Medic and Crash, what do like best about the bags you suggest, and what is a comfortable load? As slow as I am, a 24 hr bag would have to last me 72 hrs. *-)

What's the prevailing wisdom on multiple compartments vs one big 'bucket' compartment?

Snap sacks are not the only 18th century carry device that might be of interest to you.

They used single strap bags of all sizes back then.

Check the New Invented Knapsack and the French knapsack. Both can be used with a single strap.

If you buy a painters tarp made from 10oz canvas it will last very well if you back the attachment points of all straps with leather or a big button so they will not tear through. Double stitch everything.

I also like to wash and treat the canvas with waterproofing before I make up the bags or packs.

There was also the budget and hoppis straps that placed the weight on the tumpline going to the forehead. In the old days that was the preferred method of carrying really heavy loads and often brought a pack basket into the mix.

I also have a couple of modern sling packs but find that they are not well suited for any heavy load out. I keep one in the Escape as the carry unit for the GHB which will only carry water, a bit of food and a few other necessities for a few hours walk home.

When I use it (haven't weighed it) my load out is something like ---- military style poncho, first aid kit, fixed blade knife, folding knife, folding saw, fire starting kit, 60 ft of paracord, signal mirror, whistle, bug spray, sun screen, handgun, extra magazine of ammunition, water bottle X2.

My sling pack is my "Flea market pack"....
Contents are similar to Crashes....except I leave out the fixed blade knife, saw, and ..cheapo poncho's in stead of milsup.

Add in more water bottles, and ....snacks, flashlight. and several fold- out carry bags for purchases.

I find it convenient.....and pretty light.

I've never put much weight in mine. Similar to Crash's. Mostly just a man purse for carrying goodies on day hikes. Normally stays packed with a sealed water filter, ferro rod, PJ pack, and other little things. Then I just use the big compartments for water, field guide, rope, sammiches, or whatever might be needed for the day. I have loaded my other 5.11 rush 72 with 80-100 pounds and ran with it and never had anything fail. I'd guess the smaller MOAB 10 would be equally strong for it's size but I can't say a weight.

I like the multiple compartments...you don't have to use them, but they are there if you need them. I probably have at most used 1/5th of them at any one time. But they don't really take up anymore space so...Still have the large main "bucket".

Favorite part is the ability to quickly swing it around to my front and get out what I need without taking it off. Especially for the handgun pocket. Don't have to take it all the way off and unzip pockets digging for it. If you don't use the hydration bladder with it, it's also very handy for getting water out without slowing down.

I had a sling bag for awhile. I started to not really like it. It was a copy of the maxpedition bag. After a day of hiking with it moderately full it just started to wear on my one shoulder. It now rides on the fire truck with me as my mask bag/ stuff bag. I ended up getting a condor compact assault bag. 2 straps but about the same size and it's a lot more comfortable. For me anyway.

BTW: When I went to college lived in the student ghetto, no car - walked everywhere. Wore out a couple backpacks before I was done, did have one with the waist-belt system, and am familiar with 'em, tho I expect there's been a lot of improvement over the yrs. Later, went back again, used a haversack (Mil knock off) that could either be 2 strapped or one, preferred the one strap - I;m guessing in the 20 lb range, as I had 2 large thermos' - one coffee, one soup - usually a couple apples or other fruit, umbrella, multiple notepads (this was in the olden days when that meant a pads of paper) books, and miscellaneous.

howbouta large butt pack so it dont interfere with your neck in anyway. some you can pack a whole lot of gear in, just saying.

That is a great suggestion. If you can stand shoulder straps with nothing touching your neck they do make some dandy butt packs. I have a Mountainsmith Day TLS. It doesn't come with shoulder straps but you can purchase them separately. They replace the single strap that comes with it.

Thanx guys, love the ideas...

This is kinda what I had in mind, using a sling pac in conjuction with a belt system, or fanny pack rig. Something like the "HSGI sure grip padded belt" on which I'd carry the basics, pretty much along the line of Crash's list above. The pac then would be for food, extra cloths and the like.

I'm kinda intrigued by the cuben fiber tarp/bivvy combo that comes in around 22 ounces - and using a down comforter w/ foot box - both come down to pretty small volume, so I'd likely put them in the sling pack. (A wool half blanket as well, probably rolled up on the outside, largely for wrapping my old bones in when sitting around the fire, a blanket pin creates multi-options).

If I go with a DIY sling pac (Thanx Kyratshooter) I think I'd customize it a bit with some extra support and D-rings. Attach a rolled up half-blanket and tarp to one side and sleep pad to the other, my camp ax to the other on the side facing away from me.

Being a old car camper (I prefer 'woods loafer' ) I've got a lot of experience with cheap poly-tarps (My kids joke about my turning campsites into tarp cities) and frequently used them near fires and only on occasion ended up 'pin' holes from sparks (I have a son-n-law who turns our campfires into Bonfires - if you can's see it from space... <sigh> ) I keep a '5' x 7' tarp in the Sub with the other typical emergency stuff you put in for the winter.

I'm hoping to keep the combined weight of the belt and bag loaded under 20 lbs including food and water. A bit of challenge. Since I envision having to have stuff sturdy enough for more than a day or two, if I have to leave my Suburban and 'walk out', and my limitations regarding speed and distance.

BTW: I don't own any firearms, so that weight is freed for other stuff. Up till I hit my mid- 40's I was physical enough not to worry about defending myself (Conceit? perhaps some. But I've led a very robust life, including being a HS football and wrestling coach for 16 yrs and been in good shape most of my life) Now that I'm feeling my vulnerability (the price of a robust life?), I'm considering a sidearm, but not seriously. I don't hunt but the property I'm looking at, I've found tracks of both deer and turkey. And coyotes are a real problem in my area... soooo....

I have never liked one strap bags. They just aren't comfortable. Even if it doesn't have that much weight. A good pack with a GOOD waist belt will take the weight off the shoulders. You can take off one of the shoulder straps and it will still balance okay, if the hip belt is being used. Like Rick said, the shoulder straps are for balance. You can even take off a shoulder strap and put an archer type strap across the chest and connected to the pack. A functioning hip belt with some sort of frame that transfers weight to the hips is the key.

A waist belt is another option. It generally comes with a shoulder strap, but is meant to be worn with the waist strap. I have one (not the one in the link) and it is pretty comfortable to wear, and my shoulder doesn't get any stress on it. The shoulder strap is mainly for balance.

Haha...I just noticed that Rick mentioned this exact pack.....that is what I get for not reading all the posts.

If you really have shoulder and other problems with carrying weight, then I would stay away from making one from canvas. You can still make one, just use nylon. Just as wear resistance, but a lot lighter. You want light weight. The cuben tarp is a step in the right direction. Think super ultra light. I also wouldn't take a wool blanket. Really heavy for the warmth. Get a down bag, or even a high quality synthetic bag or even quilt.

Looks like I'm going to re-visit my assumptions about a 2 strap system, tho I have my doubts, perhaps the new waist systems are better than I remember. Nylon instead of canvas for a DIY snapsack makes good sense.

Tho I;m not looking at apocalyptic situation, the way I;m thinking is my limitations on distance will force me to stop for a good while before the weight of a single strap became a problem. I'm that guy you want along in case you meet a hungry Griz, or pack of zombies, you don't have to outrun them, b/c you can easily outrun me.

As for a wool half-blanket... multi purpose item w/ both practical and psychological comfort factors, including protecting the down comforter/ quilt I'm looking at from stray sparks.

Great suggestions guys, Thanx, gives me things to think on.

BTW: I've not bought that land yet, but if I don't get this one, there similar properties available. This one is the cheapest per acre at present with the best potential being had even cheaper. Just gotta be patient and slowly reel 'em in.
