Natural Bushcraft Shelters

I've noticed that the go-to shelter for most outdoorsmen is a tent or tarp. But if you didn't have one, either by accident or on purpose, what type of natural shelter would you use? I've made a lean-to before, but I know of a couple others. Do you have a favorite? HOw do you build it? Pictures are encouraged!

Depends on conditions for me. I've used lean-tos when temps are too bad. I've only used a debris shelter a couple of times. If you don't have anything to water proof the roof you will get wet in either one if the debris is frozen or slushy. Once your fire or body heat starts to warm things up the frozen stuff will melt and drip on you. That would be better than freezing to death I guess but it's still uncomfortable and being wet when it's cold is not good.

I've never used a debris shelter, and the lean-to I built was in the summer. I once saw some pictures of a family building a wigwam in the traditional fashion at a powwow up in New England. The only thing that was "untraditional" about it was the Tyvek sheet that went over the frame before the outer layer of what I presume was buck skin. I suppose a drop cloth or tarp would keep you dry inside, but you have to be really, really careful with the fire, if you were using one.

I carry a survival blanket to use as a roof if I have to build one. Then cover it with debris. However, I generally carry a one person tent if I'm by myself.

I usually carry one as well. Even if it's not in my regular gear, I keep one in my FAK, just in case somebody is going into shock or hypothermia.

I also have my one man tent with me. It's light wieght at 3 pounds and I can fold it approximately 16" x 5". But I've been making a lean to shelter since I was a kid. They work well for warm weather and keeping the rain off. But debris shelters would be my go to shelter. Offers more cover and warmth. Now a swamp shelter or elevated shelters are cool in pictures but take a lot more redneck engineering. But at Rick has mentioned, depends on the situation.

I also have my one man tent with me. It's light wieght at 3 pounds and I can fold it approximately 16" x 5". But I've been making a lean to shelter since I was a kid. They work well for warm weather and keeping the rain off. But debris shelters would be my go to shelter. Offers more cover and warmth. Now a swamp shelter or elevated shelters are cool in pictures but take a lot more redneck engineering. But at Rick has mentioned, depends on the situation.

I was out for 4 days that trip and tried to conserve battery life so minimal pictures were taken, I used bamboo for my frame cause it was available and strong yet lightweight. I put my first layer with pine and spuce second layer with the bamboo leave for added water proofing and and thick solid layer of dry leaves. I found the bits of tin which as you can see I used the larger section as a wind shield for my shelter entrance and the long piece for a heat shield which pushes the heat back into my shelter. Works great and after a year she is still standing!

Glad to hear it worked out. We don't have a lot of bamboo, but we do have a lot of pines. Pine boughs would make a decent middle layer like you have, or a mattress of sorts. A bunch of reeds woven into the frame work may be decent too.

Been many years since I used a debris shelter to sleep in......but have made many as a rain shelter for all day hunts.
I do use rain gear, but trying the sit still in a pouring rain....is hard to do....better if you have a shelter.

I look for blow down trees and have used them as the ridge pole to cover with what ever is handy.
A extras large contractor bag, seems split and stretched over the log form a survivable tent......

Also have used the root ball as a blind and shelter on the dirt side....similar to this.....not mine, found the image

Where I am, sleeping of the ground is a must and a shelter is something you must be able to make quickly. I would not opt for being fancy and make those shelters like the tv shows teach you.
Yes, knowing how to make one is essential, but taking too many materials, too long a time and too laborious which will make you dehydrate (as you will need at least 2 to 3 liters of water when making one...! I would opt for a light tarp and hammock or the most simple as I have taught, a 7-11 poncho for a roof and a rope bed...that is the most primitive I can think off. Believe me, just calculate how long you would need to make a bamboo shelter and the amount of labor, time and materials....and its an emergency?

Well, like you say, I wouldn't want to rely on a primitive shelter as my only option for an emergency. But for recreational use, I think that a natural shelter is a fun thing to build. If you've got available water, and the time to build one, I think that it is an enjoyable project. If you want to come back to that area anytime later, the shelter is already up and built (hopefully empty as well), so you don't need to set up the poncho shelter.

That's a neat shelter you've got pictured. I have seen the blown over tree shelters before, and I think that they make a good basis for shelter building. But here, where we don't have much wind, the only large trees that tip like that are in swamps, so they generally pool with water and muck. Thanks for the idea though.

There is a reference to a "Wayward pine"....pine tree that grows away for other close by....and gets bigger, wider, and taller as there is less competition.

Kinda fictitious, but as I have a few out at "The Place" that are pretty big now....I planted them awhile ago.....I went and checked them out...and yeah...was a pretty big hollow under the limbs, that were pushed down to the ground with snow......

Didn't sleep in it, but did crawl in, clean it out and sat there awhile.....Cozy and toasty.

I would consider that a viable option in needed.

She's been really interested in trees since she retired. Reads a lot of books about them, paints them, tells people about species trees literally ever time she sees one and has company.

Yep. The frame is wood limbs with woven roots and pine boughs weaved in. Then a thick layer of pine needles. The inside had pine boughs, miscellaneous weeds and then cedar for an insulation bed.

Sounds good. I'm going on an overnight soon and that's most likely how I'll do it. The area I camp in has a lot of tall grasses and large pine trees.

I use a lean to, with a plastic tarp over the front l, it's called a super shelter. I found it on youtube. Mine is a semi permanent camp, and is 6 miles from my house. It's main support bar that's latched between the trees is about 6" in diameter, and the sticks on the back and sides are about 4"-6". I built it to last, and I hope it does. Once the snow goes, I'll get some pictures of it. I haven't tried any other type of shelter, but would love to at some point or another. I'd also like to build a 10x10 cabin eventually, but for now the lean to is great.

Typically I carry a SilNylon tarp that compresses down smaller than a 500ml water bottle, about the size of a 12 oz soda can less than 1/2 pound. This is all I really need, enough space to sleep, cook a meal and hang out for many hours or days if it rains, sleet, snow.

BUT if that was lost, destroyed (falling tree) or a wild animal ran off with my rucksack, or it fell into a ravine, or kayak got pinned in a rapid or whatever. THAT is what your are asking. So hopefully I would have a blade and not just need to break off branches and find wood laying on the ground etc.

Then like Tokwan said find a area of high ground that will not flood when (not if) it rains, don't lay down on the ground if you don't absolutely need to. Make a raised bed of branches, leaves, dead debris, above that a long pole between two trees (saplings perhaps) with branches to support it just barely high enough to crawl under but above debris bed. stack poles, branches on side(s) cover with leaves for insulation and to shed water. "Embrace the Suck" It is going to be wet, humid, cold and depending on the weather bugs, snakes and skunks may come to join you. This ain't no **** hotel. The "Four Season's" Hotel Concierge will not be calling to see if you need anything. LOL

If it is very hot and humid I prefer to make a small thatch roof between two trees about chest height and makeshift hammock out of cordage (natural vines) and hang from that, but if you have no insulation this is just to cold at about 2-5am.

That's some sound advice. I think that for recreational use, a natural shelter is a fun project. Knowing how to build one is never a bad skill to have in case you lose your gear. Thanks for the advice.

In grade school my friends and I used machetes and hatchets to build little huts in a small 3 acre section of 2nd growth jungle near our school on the weekends. My father had purchased about 20 acres long before I was born this was all that was left it is all gone now. These were just poles or trees in the ground with some poles across the top and palm leaves woven to shed water as a roof as some of us had learned from indigenous people during the summer. If we had time we would use palm leaves for walls but often a strong thunderstorm would blow it all down before that. Even the neighborhood girls made huts and slept in them on weekends. I assumed all kids in rural areas did this.
When we got a little older we used scrap lumber to build tree houses, the winds blew these down as well. Usually not with us in them. Once we built a tree house between 3 trees that slid back and forth to allow it to move with the wind as the trees moved, but even it got blown down. Then some people who lived near by collected all our scrap lumber and had a large bonfire. We were not happy. So a thatch hut hidden in the jungle was probably better only very muddy sleeping on the jungle floor. Therefore, poles or trees strong enough to support hammocks and nets to reduce the mosquitos made it better. Some of us bought army surplus "jungle hammocks" leftover from the Vietnam war, today you can buy much better camping hammocks.

At most State Parks it is forbidden to cut anything, pick up a stick, stone or mess with wildlife of almost any kind. Only limited fishing is about all that is allowed and pitch your tent in very restricted areas. I rarely camp in State Parks, usually only if it is a big group event. Sorta feels like a straight jacket to me.

I am not complaining about State Parks, these are very limited resources and must be shared with a LOT of people so these rules are very important. I try to be very respectful while staying at State Parks. I have trimmed away green briar (Smilax) to make space for my camping hammock and cut back cat tail reeds (canoe access to lake) but only after getting permission from the employees there. I know my native plants very well and am very careful to protect all plants in danger of survival whatever their classification.

Yeah, I like state parks as well. You're right about the rules though. But, all in all, I can't complain about my local state parks. They're pretty clean and you're usually alone.

But we also have state forests, which are an entirely different story. They are managed through the Dept. of Agriculture, rather than the Dept. of Parks and Recreation, so the rules are different and a little more relaxed. I haven't camped in any yet, but I have read the rules. It seems like as long as you're respectful to the plants, wildlife, and landscape, you can do just about anything. I am really trying to get an overnight in one soon, but with all the sub-zero temperatures, I don't want to risk hypothermia. Maybe in March...

I know we did! We scrounged lumber, tin and nails to construct out "cabins".
One time the adult males helped us out with a tree house, boy were we the coolest kids in the area!

Another one I saw didn't have a name, but I liked it. It was a three walled structure, made of rocks and spars, covered with a woven mat-type roof of vines and pawpaw leaves. I think that it would be good too...

It seems to be a rather well regarded show. Not a lot of "dramatics", just simple skills being taught to folks who have little to no experience out in the bush.

Grew up in a small town in central Wisconsin....kids in the 1950's .........had a woods 1/2 a block away....mostly jack-pine, about 8" in diameter.
Not sure who owned the land....thinking maybe the city....but nobody seemed to care if the kids "logged" some of those pines for log cabins, stockades, shelters and forts of all shapes and sizes.
Even brought them home for the back yard forts...one was 3 stories tall.

Lumber yard by the railroad, provided nail sweeping, (I do suspect they dumped some out just to watch us pick them up.
Nail kegs were fun as well, looked like BP kegs on Davey Crockett TV shows.

Old falling down houses were also a materials gold mine....and again nobody seemed to care.......
We could have gotten lock jaw for rusty nails, we salvaged, cuts from tin, all sorts of asbestos, broken glass, lead pipes......just all sorts of fun stuff.....It's was a wonder we didn't die.

Shelters are one of those things students always want to do, then after 3-4 hours work, and their shelters may still not be waterproof, they get a bit 'over it'. The reality of shelter making, if you don't have lots of wide foliage, is it takes a LONG time to make them waterproof depending on the area you are in, and what materials are available. General Aussie bush is pretty ordinary for good wide materials, (unless you can strip wide strips of bark off trees). Wide leaved material like Palm and Gymea Lilly are great to use, but are only on the east coast. Snow is easy, Bamboo is great, but takes a LONG time, pine forests are easy, due to the abundance of needles, however most of the fallen timber is always half rotten.
Finding natural shelters is always the number 1 choice, because if there's no need to expend energy, then don't do it. Use stone overhangs, large boulders fallen large trees etc first, before starting a shelter from scratch.
It does give people a sense of achievement however to sleep in their own hand made shelters. :-)

Yes, most of the reptiles and mammals in our bush get ticks on them. As far as I know, most have also built up resistance to the paralysis types that effect domestic pets like dogs, cats and rabbits badly (eventually they kill them).

My typical go to shelter for when I only have a short time to set one up is basically a hasty fighting position, lined with bedding and covered with sticks, a layer of leaves, and then buried in the dirt. It wouldnt work so well in a desert, where you would need a pick ax to dig with...

Even though it's a hole in the ground, it WILL keep you dry if you build it right. Adding more debris on top to shed water helps.

I wouldn't want to stay in one forever, but if it's going to rain and I have nothing else, this seems like less work than other methods, at least in my area.

If I were somwhere else, I might pick a different method.

in Hawaii i built a roof with 3 side walls all coverd with used beach mats with a rubber tarp under the mats.
and a 3-man dome tent inside otherwise the 3in cockaroaches and mosquitoes would get ya.after awhile
when the mats would disintigrate a bit the shelter became invisible from 20 feet away. it matched the surrounding
terrain that well.the rainy season sucked major though. living outside in the rain for six months at a strech really sucked.
that i would go outer island for a few weeks where it was dry.and lest i forget the huge centipedes and scorpions.

This debris hut shelter took me about 10 hours to make over 2 days to complete. I slept in it on the first night partially completed and it was no fun because of the mosquito problem without a door. On the second day, I completed the shelter with a door and I was able to get some good rest. The third night, it rained and was 50 degrees fahrenheit. I stayed dry and warm and noticed a big temperature change once I got out of the debris hut shelter. The biggest challenge is time and labor required to gather the dried leaves to stack on top of the frame. I was allowed to use a tarp and a rake to collect leaves. I can't imagine how much longer it would have taken me without these 2 items. Maybe 30 hours!!? I have no experience with building any other natural shelters.

Madmax, where would you recommend as good land to do some primitive camping in ocala? I grew up on the edge of the santa fe swamp, and my parents currently live in ocala.

I would like to go camping with my father when I go on leave. How is the ocala national forest? Or, more specifically, do the authorities down there care if you cut saplings/ make shelters, etc? The fish and wildlife officers around the Santa fe swamp pretty much told me I could do whatever I want as long as I didn't leave trash behind. I used to sell them exotic animals, so maybe they were turning a blind eye? I found a red eastern coach whip snake(kinda rare) for one of them, so maybe that had something to do with it...

My suggestion is to do "dispersed" camping in the forest. You could hit one of the established campgrounds, but one of our members had a finger shake at him from a park person when picking up twigs to get his fire started. Really.

Every place around water is watched.

I'll pm you some directions to little used little checked places if you want. They aren't especially memorable, but you won't likely get any visitors. If you know what I mean.

Madmax, yeah, we have 9 out of the top 10, of the most deadly and venomous snakes on the planet. Admittedly number one in the world, is the inland Taipan, which you wont ever see unless you go into the middle of the desert (not sure which state). The one you need to worry about is the Eastern Brown Snake, which is number 3 or 4 from memory. They are everywhere, I hate them. Then again we also have Tigers, and Taipans, Death Adders and Copperheads, and Mulga's so really, you just go out watching where you walk, all of the time.

We see Red Bellied Blacks at our Survival School all the time, but they will only hospitalise you.

We also have funnel web spiders everywhere (deadly), especially on southern facing cool slopes, so you never dig holes or picks up rocks with bare hands. The males start a wandering at night though, in search of females. I had one walk up to within 30cm of my bare foot, late one night, when all us instructors were having some down time, away from the students, only 2 courses ago. Lucky I had my head torch on, and spotted him out the corner of my eye.

But at least we don't have bloody great big bears wandering around like you guys do. That would scare the beejesus out of me!!! :-)

They've been found in trees at school bus stops. These are black bears down here. I'ld get too much flack when speaking about grizzlies. Whole 'nother animal. I am not a fan. And have history with them.

I am in favor of the new bear season in FL. We need it. Wildlife Management is finally managing the problem... sorta.

I'm more afraid of spiders than I am of snakes or bears for that matter...I wouldn't fare well "down under" I feel. Most of my time there would be spent running around screaming like a school girl!

I'm not too worried about spiders. Ants are worse when making up your sleeping arrangements on the ground. We have 'stinging' ants, that sting like wasps and cause anaphylactoc shock. No one ever knows if they are allergic, until they get stung. And unlike bees, the more you get stung, the worse the reaction will be.

One of the varieties we get are called "Jack Jumpers", because they actually jump towards you to have a go at you, if you stir up their nest. ( I actually got stung on one finger today whilst marking a nest with a triangle of sticks at our school today, They 'jump' up sticks and also your legs too, they are real little bastards !)

The jack jumper ant (Myrmecia pilosula), commonly known as the hopper ant, jumper ant or jumping jack, is a species of venomous ant native to Australia. Most commonly found in Tasmania and southeast Australia, it is a member of the genus Myrmecia and was formally described and named by Frederick Smith in 1858. Ants of this species are known for their ability to jump several inches. They are large ants; workers and males are around the same size: 12 to 14 millimetres (0.47 to 0.55 in) for workers, and 11 to 12 millimetres (0.43 to 0.47 in) for males. The queen, measuring 14 to 16 millimetres (0.55 to 0.63 in) in length, has a similar appearance to a worker, while males are identifiable by their perceptibly smaller mandibles.
The ants are primarily active during the day and live in open habitats. They nest in bushland, woodland and open forests, surrounded by gravel and sandy soil, which can be found in rural areas and less commonly in urban areas.
