Will it? Won't it? Who knows? NASA is a pretty respectable organization. One thing is for certain. It's a reminder that Mother Earth is ever changing and we just happen to be living in a very nice time frame weather wise. Even if partly true it means that we will see less water over the long term and it's something that needs to be at the forefront of planning.

Very good article among many on the topic Rick. Potable water is in my opinion the #1 issue of survival, also water for agriculture.

Here is an fairly good video about various programs around the State of Texas and how they are dealing with water shortages.
http://video.klru.tv/video/2365345995/

"The city of Wichita Falls, Texas, may soon become the first in the country where half of the drinking water comes directly from wastewater."
http://www.npr.org/2014/05/06/309101579/drought-stricken-texas-town-turns-to-toilets-for-water

So perhaps Texas are "greener" than Californians or make that "browner", LOL. Well they filtered the brown out, so we assume. ha ha ha

Now I challenge y'all from the "left coast" to post links of how your states and cities are meeting the challenge.

Well being in south Mississippi I can get a shovel and dig 18 inches and get water. I think I'd be one of the last effected by a drought. That being said there is still Mother Nature that can throw a curve and I'd be the very first without available water, so all the more reason to be ready for what She throws at us.

If you were way far south Mississippi or Louisiana you could become part of the Gulf of Mexico and that water is not very potable. Much of Texas and the deep south was "under the sea" according to the fossil record but that was a few years ago. Not sure how soon that cycle will repeat itself. I'll probably not live that long but my descendants might.

Personally I take issue with a few points when journalist take complex issues and attempt to overly simplify them for example: "there is an 80 percent chance that such an extended drought will strike between 2050 and 2099, unless world governments act aggressively to mitigate impacts from climate change"

Also talking excessively about El Nio/La Nia these Southern Oscillation (ENSO) that can affect weather patterns around the globe, but 10 other naturally occurring ocean-atmosphere oscillations in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans have been recognized and named including the North Atlantic Oscillation, Indian Ocean Dipole. These have a lot of influence on our climate in N.A.

http://www.whoi.edu/main/topic/el-nino-other-oscillations

So yes it is impossible to be exact on predictions but a general estimate is reasonable. Sorta like saying interest rates generally go up when the markets are down, but exactly how much or on what date … heck if I know.

Soil samples, ice core samples, tree rings, etc all seem to agree this is cyclical how much does/has human or dinosaur behavior add to it, or astroids from outer space, well that is part speculation, part science and a lot of estimation. But mega-droughts have happened and almost certainly will happen again. Exactly when and were is a bit like predicting interest rates or the stock market. If you could do that with 100% accuracy you would be a trillionaire. Good luck with that.

Most Americans waste far too much water. They aren't helped much by appliance manufacturers.
For instance, I would gladly shut the shower off if I knew I wouldn't get frozen or scalded by turning it back on (a convenient "bucket shower" invention is needed.)
Dishwashers and washing machines are a convenience and they are getting better about water consumption but still use far more water than necessary and are used by people far more often than needed. It should not be considered "gross" to wear most articles of clothing more than a few times before washing (I draw the line a socks and undies though...)
Even something as simple as cleaning the garden veggies shouldn't require copious running water.
And grass lawns are the stupidest mark of water-wasteful vanity there can possibly be.
Using potable (treated) drinking water for any of the above should be reconsidered too.

Changing the mindset of an entire country though? Not happening, probably not even when there is a crisis. Water has been far too cheap for far too long.

Most shower heads have a setting to allow a small amount of water to run to maintain the temperature. Not all but most. All of them in my house have a simple lever that you can turn to reduce the water to a trickle. In addition, all shower heads have to be equipped with flow reducers. Federal law capped the flow of shower heads at 2.5 gallons per minute back in 1992. The sad part is the shower heads kinda suck at being shower heads and most folks remove the reducers.

LowKey
02-14-2015, 02:42 PM
A foot operated shower reducer would be the bomb. Fiddling for a little lever on the shower head with soap in your eyes would kinda suck. We don't seem to have those levers on the showerheads in this house...Hmmm...Will look into it.

We live in a big nation that is part of a bigger world and all of it is divided into different climate zones.

Yes, the west is in drought situation. For most of geological history "the west" has been in a condition of drought. It was originally called "The Great American Desert". It was not called "Bring most of your population here, pipe in water and gripe because there is not enough!". We did that on our own without the permission of nature.

The original settlement pattern skipped over that vast waterless area and collected in the Pacific north west. Even the travel routes followed the major rivers of the west. Only the gold rush made people even consider a trip to mid or southern California, Arizona or New Mexico and West Texas was unsettled until the invention of deep drilling and the pumping windmill.

I live in an area where there is an average of around 40" of precipitation per year. 12 miles away a big river transports billions of gallons of water past me each year. 1/4 mile away a big lake holds a couple million gallons, which I access.

This water is filtered, purified and piped into my home and I get to use all I can stand, and I can even use it to water my garden, for $30 per month.

Drought in the west brings me no guilt, sadness or surprise. I am a historian and I have been studying "drought in the west" for my entire professional career. It has always existed and until some asteroid smacks the earth and changes the 23 1/2 % tilt there is going to be a water shortage in the west and it has nothing to do with "Climate Change".

You move into a historically desert area and you are going to have severe drought, and perpetual water shortage.

You are not "spoiled", that is the normalcy for your geographic area.

Few people realize that east of the 100th meridian the rainfall averages over 30" per year.

West of the 100th meridian it averages 10" of rainfall per year. That is everything west of Missouri/Iowa/Arkansas/Central TX to include everything in the rain shadow of the Rocky mountains.

By climatic definition a desert is an area that receives less than 10" of rain each year.

Parts of Southern California, AZ, NM, Utah and Nevada average less than 6" per year and they often get the entire amount in a single 24 hour period.

That's the NORMAL precipitation for that region.

Yep, LA, San Diego, Every town in Nevada, Utah and Arizona (1/4 of the US population ???) is smack in the middle of some of the most harsh desert regions in the WORLD, not just the nation. They only exist because we water them artificially.

LowKey and Rick make good points. Humans, for the most part, are a highly adaptable species and can generally figure out how to deal with each new crisis in an effective way. I don't personally care for some "low flow" shower heads and toilets. Once when my family and another were sharing a small 1 bathroom hunting cabin at a friend's SW Texas ranch. The friend's wife heard the shower go on and off several times as I as washing up and commented. Heck I only run water when I actually need it. Doesn't everyone? Toilet: "if its yellow let it mellow, if its brown flush it down", Please!!! LOL Common sense. Occasionally I just go down to the river and bathe there even in winter when temps are about 30-40F but I dry off fast, shrinkage is embarrassing. ha ha ha cows and goats mostly just ignore me, I don't stare at them either.

I is amazing how much water can be saved............ if you have to carry it.

Early on, "The Place" used a sawdust toilet (worked well).....and 5 gal water bottles filled at the local city park, 5 miles away.

Added a "solar shower"....started with the black shower bag, (heavy), to old water heater tank in black box and black hose on roof, circulated with a 12 volt pump.

Ended up with a Zolar propane water heater.....the added a 50 gal drum....then second drum with water catchment for gutters and down spouts.
Propane heater was a PITA as water had to circulate or it would over heat.........so shower may be really hot, to warm to just right....

Added a 2-1/2 gal electric water heater, (yes had electric).....used the 50 gal drums, and sprayer 12 pump.....Hot shower on demand.

Now you spoke of other using it?....Well, many visitors like long hot showers.......we sent tem to town to the park public shower, or truck stop $4 bucks.......

Take as long of shower as you want.....BUT you only have 2-1/2 gal of hot water.

With that 2-1/2 gal of hot water....it was....wet down, shut off.....soap up...shut off, rinse....shut off.
Hair washing was a separate event for those long haired ladies.

The rain water was "soft" and really cleaned....and we didn't have to carry "wash water" any longer.

The state approved well, bury tank, and septic system was in the $11K range....and worth every penny.

As any "true historian" who has actually read much history knows many of the large influx of people to California after 1849, stayed for the great agriculture and commerce. Since then CA has become a much larger contributor to the nation's food supply than any state on or near the East Coast these numbers are available from highly reliable sources for you to look up and compare for the last 50-100 years. I not only know my history and facts but I can back up every statement I make.

"By 1850 California agriculture was dominated by wheat. In 1870 California was the nations second largest wheat producer." There was a glut in Wheat the price dropped and.. "Many wheat growers sold their land to farmers who wanted to grow specialty crops such as oranges and lemons." http://www.dof.ca.gov/HTML/FS_DATA/HistoryCAEconomy/gold_rush.htm
Also many other crops like rice, strawberries, vegetables, produced in CA feed the nation to much larger extent than any state with the possible exception of Florida. So the effective use of water in CA is VERY important to Human Survival in the USA. This is just common sense, rational thinking based on facts that people who read all understand.

"California remained the number one state in cash farm receipts with 11.3 percent of the US total. The state accounted for 15 percent of national receipts for crops and 7.1 percent of the US revenue for livestock and livestock products."
http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/statistics/

If you want I could provide actual facts about grain production in the Mid-West and beef production in Texas and how drought has effected the cost of living in the USA and the "intelligent" science based methods being used to adjust for drought. But I will not suggest emotional ideas by self proclaimed "historians" who do not offer evidence to back up their statements. That is just NOT me.

A report issued by USDA Feb 14, 2014:
http://usda.mannlib.cornell.edu/usda/current/CropValuSu/CropValuSu-02-14-2014.pdf

Total value of principal crops per state in 2011:

California $26,636,423
Iowa $21,075,783
Florida $4,851,935
Texas $4,927,325

Kentucky $2,905,725 including tobacco production $332,993 good barter item but not wise to eat it.

So y'all decide which states actually have a proven record of "feeding the nation" and the world?

California and Iowa and other Mid-West States mostly just need to continue on with the progress they have already made with growing food with less water. This makes sense to me. There are several excellent articles posted online about this. Also many good continuing education classes you can take online or in person around the country if this is of interest to you.

I did some gardening in the San Jacinto mountains of California one summer. Just my personal opinion but raising food in rocky mountain soil is not a great way to feed your family. YMMV (Your Milage May Vary).

"Bottom land" is excellent for food production but if global climate change is for real (it appears to be), this means dramatic weather events will lead to more flooding in these rich farming areas and thus crop failures and some loss of life. All across the world not just in USA or isolated areas. But here is one of hundreds of articles to show the cost in insurance $.

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2014/03/24/flood-prone-ky-river-towns-see-insurance-hikes/6818251/

Evidence or facts should not offend anyone, I certainly do not take it as an insult when someone challenges me to back up anything I have said. But I was trained and educated by very scientifically minded people.

I am only attempting to organize my thoughts and provide evidence in an insightful manner, as I was trained to do. If I had not done so I would not have made it very far in presenting business proposals and winning contracts.

This article about global per capital food production and how it is keeping up is interesting:

http://www.fao.org/docrep/015/i2490e/i2490e03a.pdf

Speaks to issues of drought but flooding should also be considered, a corn framer friend of mine in Iowa I have know for over 40 years told me that strong rainstorms that dump lots of water over a short period of time do almost as much damage to his production as long periods of drought. I have only grown a few acres of corn but understand how that is possible. Global or regional climate changed caused by whatever, does seem to cause less regular light rain patterns and more heavy or sever storms about every year or so that were once every 5-20 years. Thus more crop failures, and higher cost of food for everyone.

"The availability of freshwater resources shows a very similar picture to that of land availability. Sufficient re- sources are unevenly distributed at the global level, and an increasing number of countries or parts of countries are reaching alarming levels of water scarcity, especially in the Near East, North Africa and in South Asia. A mit- igating factor could be increasing water use efficiency, such as providing the right incentives to use less water.
Fears that yields are reaching a plateau do not seem war- ranted. The potential to increase crop yields (even with existing technology) is considerable. Provided the ap- propriate socio-economic incentives are in place, there are still bridgeable yield gaps the differences between agro-ecologically attainable and actual yields to be ex- plotted."

If you read this annual report from "Freedom House" you may see that in an indirect way higher global food prices result in a less politically stable world and thus less freedom and worries about SHTF or whatever you prefer to call it.

https://freedomhouse.org/report/freedom-world/freedom-world-2015#.VODslTptnFI

I welcome all views on all topics. But if I ever make an statement that insults millions of people living in a state or entire region that has limited freshwater resource and imply that they should not live there, I certainly hope someone calls me out on it and asks me to provide documented evidence. The most agriculturally productive regions of the USA, North America and the world have issues with extended periods of drought that is a very well established fact. But to insult the people living there by suggesting that they should not!!!! What the hey?

Provide some evidence?

I admit I was skeptical about 10+ years ago when some "Master Gardeners" and others from east of the I-35 and I-45 in Texas from Houston, Austin, to DFW first started to use rain barrels. I had the narrow view that they only made sense out west. But you are correct a system of rain water collection and solar roof top heating can work just about anywhere. There are many great filter ideas online. Many years ago I had mostly just seen systems used for livestock and wildlife but today there are many variations use by people all across the world and from coast to coast in this country. Happy productive Californian cows learning to live in a dry region:

"As of early-September 2014, 83 percent of cattle in California were located in areas with exceptional drought (category D4) California leads the nation in dairy production, producing 21 percent of the Nations milk. second to Wisconsin in cheese production. Livestock and livestock products play an important role in California agriculture, contributing to just over a quarter of the value of agricultural production in the State. Cash receipts for livestock products totaled $12.1 billion in 2012, or just over 7 percent of total U.S. livestock cash receipts. This value consists mostly of dairy, cattle and calf, chicken, and egg production"

Source USDA:

So THAT'S what I smelled as I rode my motorcycle through CA dry, but happy dairy cows..

In Canada check out Chilliwack, British Columbia. My Grandmother lived there for many years. Her roses grew great but WOW did those dairy lots smell strong! LOL

As a child many of my father's friends and relatives were in the dairy industry I learned a bit from him and them. Americans consume a lot of dairy products so if a mega drought does hit and persist for a long time our cost of living will go up.

(She is originally from England) She has published many well respected and peer reviewed scientific papers on global climate change related topics. And edited a major university textbook on the topic. My opinion is that it is a natural cycle that humans have a minor effect on. But much like economic recessions it is difficult to be definitive about the cycle and what all the major contributing factors are until it is almost over. So about 300 years from now humans will probably be about 98% certain of it all. LOL That's my story and I'm sticking to it. This lovely lady has an initiative to give 1 billion trees the "day off" and go "car free for one day" and "save the planet". Because we care and want to avoid the mega drought. Well I'm not actually that cynical, but I did enjoy Jimmy Kimmel's sense of humor. Also I really want this lady's cut off promotional T-shirt, never seem to have enough rags around to mop up spilled soda pop. LOL

Seriously coal power plants and internal combustion engines also contribute to lung diseases that impact human health around the world, and shorten people's life. And walking, riding bikes, taking mass transit is not that bad. In fact while in cities like NYC, Paris, London, I prefer to use mass transit over a rented car or taxi. I'm laughing with Stana Katic not at her. How much these fossil fuels contribute to global climate change and how much humans can seriously change that is difficult to determine with a high degree of certainty.

So do cow farts but what's a guy to do?

On this drought thing, can you drink your urine?

So do cow farts but what's a guy to do?

On this drought thing, can you drink your urine?

When I am in Wichita Falls, Texas I can drink my own urine because the city filters it for me so it comes out of the tap.

Also if you make a solar still or use a forward osmosis filter you probably could.

http://www.survivenature.com/images/solar-water-still.gif

OH and besides vegetation and fresh cow pies be sure to pee under that solar still before you seal it up and suck on the tube. (This illustration does not show tube in container under plastic sheet that goes up to top of hole in ground for user to suck out fresh water with, but if possible do that.) Good luck with that! LOL I prefer to just hike on out of there if at all possible. Solar stills are about as effective as a screen door on a submarine. ha ha ha

If you had a large budget but a small "space" you could use one of these:

http://gizmodo.com/5995448/how-astronauts-turn-pee-into-drinking-water

"centrifugal distiller: and the result pee that's cleaner than any water you've had in your mouth recently." So go ahead Rick drink your pee. Or if it freaks you out avoid Outer Space and Wichita Falls, Texas.

"take a drink from a tap in Houston and say thank you to your friends in Dallas for flushing their toilets"

https://stateimpact.npr.org/texas/2011/12/21/dallas-wastewater-keeps-trinity-flowing-houston-drinking/

So the folks in Houston, Texas drink the urine of the folks in Dallas and actually get "pissed off" when the folks in Dallas do not discharge enough water into the Trinity River for them. Truth is stranger than fiction. LOL

This isn't new news.....

Water depletion from the deep well aquifers have been discussed for many years.

My senior class paper was based on this subject, major reference was a book by William O Douglas....which had been excerpted and printed in part in Playboy Magazine back then.
Pump water that has been there for millions of years, and take a deduction for doing it.

http://constitution.org/wod/wod_por.htm

We have not learned.......

Playboy has articles??

That's what I've heard. I've never bothered to notice.

Playboy has articles??

Yes, I wasn't just a pretty face back then......
Also invented "cut and paste".....Write the text, on paper, cut it apart, and put in in order with scotch tape.
My paper was like 17 ft. long.....with notes.

Hunter63 I imagined you were scratching on clay tablets with reeds. How old WERE you when this paper can out? LOL How graphic where those figures drawn on the clay tablets? I have seen so shocking scenes depicted in ancient Mesopotamia. Perhaps their wells ran dry because the gods became jealous. H ha ha

Senior citizens from my church used to occasionally take group trips to Wichita Falls to dine. Not so much lately. :gagged:
