Down filled

How many people have down filled coats,vests or other gear. I don't have any, i think it's warm but is it durable, is it worth the extra $$$$$ . A friend just showed me an 800 or 850 down filled jacket, it is very light and he says it is very warm ???

Generally down is warm if dry.....wet not so much.

There are different kind of "down"....had a Milsup mummy sleeping back....was filled with down....but I suspect it was chicken feathers, at least that's what it smelled like when wet.

I can't get down with down. The problem with it wet is too big of a problem for me so I don't own any.

I have one huge down filled parka,it spends its winters in my jeep in a bag.ive always found that when your vehicle breaks down there is a comfort and safety feeling to putting that parka on.....even if you dont need it.I have been keeping my eyes open for a good down bag,just havent found one yet

I have 2 down jackets and 2 long down coats that actually do not make me look like the Michelin woman. That being said, my 24year old full length black mink coat that I splurged on in August 1990 is the warmest and best coat I have ever had and I wear it anywhere BUT NOT hiking as it has serious weight to it. Really, over 12 lbs. But I have never been cold in it. (edit: should have said I bought what is called a "runway model" so since it had been worn ONCE, I got it for 25% of what it cost retail. Still expensive but still looks brand new!)

Down is excellent to stop bitter winds and cold. For coats, Mine are all water proof (not just repellent). We keep 3 extra (bought for dirt cheap in August each year) for guests who come ill-equipped for our area. I do not have a down sleeping bag - agree with rest, if it gets even damp what a mess.

I have the LL Bean down jacket that keeps me pretty warm down to the teens. I usually only wear it to run outside for short periods of time when I dont want to go to the trouble of layering up.

I don't have any down stuff......yet. I did get my wife a sleeping bag that is 650 down. I plan to upgrade my sleeping bag and maybe a jacket with down versions.

Down is more durable. It will last 20+ years of packing and unpacking. A high quality synthetic will only last a few years, if used constantly. I never get my sleeping bag wet. I also generally do all my camping in the Rockies.....ie, very DRY. Down is also MUCH lighter. I am looking for lighter and last longer.

However, if you don't do a lot of backpacking, and you are in very wet conditions, then down might not be right for you. If you never backpack, then there really isn't a reason. You can get a synthetic bag that is just as warm as a down bag....it will just be heavier and bulkier....and cheaper.

Down gear is part of a winter wear system and should not be considered for one's "only coat".

Down is what I go to when the temps head into the teens and rain, and the prospect of getting the down wet, is not going to be a possibility.

If it is raining you need a regular jacket and some rain gear and it is not cold enough for down wear.

Sleeping bags should be in waterproof stuff sacks where water is not a concern.

I love my down gear, and once I bought it I can not see how I endured winters without it.

I agree with finallyME and kyratshooter and others. If mostly just for camping, sitting around the campfire at night and in early morning it does not "need" to be an expensive "fancy" down sweater or jacket. I have a jacket that I only paid $13 for at thrift shop others about $20 (Colombia and TNF brands). Personally I don't care much about colors or stains, I'm not on a "fashion shoot" while camping/hunting/fishing in wilderness. Just my personal opinion. HYOH
In last 10 years or so Hydrophobic brands like Dri-Down resist moisture initially but if they get wet the "loft" is lost and thus the insulation, but Hydrophbic down is still worth more $ IMO.

Others have laughed at me for double dry bagging my sleeping gear and apparel, but hypothermia can lead to death so I ignore foolish people. Dry bags have failed on me both expensive and cheap ones. If you are wet in a worst case situation your body can loose heat up to 25 times faster. For example punctured bags and eVent compression bag (sea-to-summit) will soak through if sitting in water in kayak hatch or pickup bed etc.

I also have a 0F TNF synthetic sleep bag, even carefully compressed it is huge. OK for winter canoe or car camping but almost worthless for backpacking therefore in lower temps a down bag is essential IMO. YMMV. BUT!!!! be sure to dry this down gear out very carefully and store fully uncompressed where it can air out so it will last many years and not smell like a "wet dog" (wet goose/duck). Read care instructions online or that come with new gear if you buy new. Some people make their own down under quilts, top quilts, hats, booties etc but down is very difficult to work with and obviously you need to know how to run a sewing machine.

Also a -20F down bag takes a LOT of storage space and MAY not be used much (5 days/year) by a guy in Texas so consider if it is worth your money and storage space wherever you live and camp, time of year you spend camping.

Yes very light and compressible for hiking. But don't store it longterm compressed or it will not last many years as intended. If properly cared for as others have commented it should outlast most synthetic alternatives. Many people recommend a down sweeter or vest with outer jacket that is water resistant. Many websites discuss this in great detail.

So bottom line compress down put in backpack or dry bag in canoe/kayak, take out when you stop for a break or at night. This is my method.

Had me quite a bag full....then I notice all sorts of mini bugs running around...fleas, mites, lick.....??????

You need a way to kill off that stuff if use for a bead coat or what ever.

Don't save the 'pickings and longer.

Very funny. It was my understanding that commercial producers used high pressure steam in part of the down cleaning process.
All animals have parasites, fish, reptiles, humans, even insects have parasites on them quite often.

Also there is not necessarily a big difference between duck and goose down but generally more effort to remove quills goes into goose down so it is typically sold with a higher fill rating as described in the outdoor gear lab link I posted. But goose is not necessarily inherently higher "fill" on the animal.

BTW even if your sleep on a synthetic mattress it is most likely full of thousands or millions of tiny mites. Don't lose any sleep over it, something needs to consume all that skin sloughing off you every night. Ha Ha Ha. Circle of Life

As a kid I thought is was strange watching village people in primitive places "cooking" their clothes and sleep blankets etc in large pots of boiling water with logs of burning wood under. But this method of "doing the laundry" does get rid of most of these mites and other parasites like lice. Some indigenous people I lived with also shaved their heads with split bamboo. Early Europeans probably had more parasites and mites on them than many of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. I watched that "Tudors" series on HBO, one scene was of King Henry VIII getting lice removed from his head, LOL.

Back to down jackets and sleeping bags I would NOT steam treat these!! Patagonia brand requires special cleaning I read. Also calendered ripstop nylon makes it more difficult for mites to access the down.
