Hello I'm new to the site and survival strategies as a whole. I'm in my 30s and living in Georgia. I don't have much experience with survival training so I'm extremely interested in learning more as a family, but I am also trying to create a survival course for my 3 elementary aged children (4,6,&10). I was wondering if I could get any advice on how to begin and books or websites that maybe helpful. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello , from Malaysia. Some information on yourself, especially back ground or experience in survival would be helpful. I read that you want to teach or train your family on survival. Well, to be a good teacher or a good trainer, you will need to be knowledgeable yourself with ample knowledge, experience and enough practices.
learning from a book which is mainly theory, might be a start, but practically doing it is something difference. I always emphasized that common sense is the number one tool, you should also learn and practice the many ways of survival. For example, there are may ways to construct emergency shelters, as it depends where you are. There are many methods to make fire and many methods to find water and to process water. It all depends on where you are, what you know and how much you have practiced.

I am very much a novice and there is so much information out that as you were so quickly able to point out by the way. I guess I'm looking for guidance on the information an experienced survivalist might start one of their children or other beginners on.

Identify someone here in your area, meet up and practice the art of survival together. Or just identify a survival class near you. I was lucky to have been trained initially when I was in the Jungle Squad or the Field Force of the Royal Malaysian Police. I then self taught by experimenting, trying out and practicing. I have been doing this since I was 16 and I am 54 now. I now teach the younger people. It is fun. But, I am may be knowledgeable in my own country, but not yours.
I might know how to make emergency shelters, fire, find water, process water, find food, but the weather might kill me..as I would be unprepared in another country or region.
So look up someone in your area.

Once you have attended a course, then share with your family and practice together. You will learn from each other.

Hello and welcome.
I think the way to approach this with your family is to start out with baby steps for you and the kids. Starting in your backyard with setting up a shelter or tent, starting a fire, cooking over a fire, using a knife and ax, etc. (basically camping activities) is a good place to start. Of course you may need some help to get started - a class, local group (scouting, outfitter, etc). Make it fun for them. After you have looked around the forum for a bit and if you have some specific questions - start a thread and ask away.

Hunter63 saying Hey and Welcome.
I'd start the kids by "camping out" in the living room....like you would do if the power goes out.......at least it get's the mind set off, "Have to sleep in my bed and watch TV or play video games.

Do you read to your kids? Because as far as books go, there are some great novels you could read to/with them to pique their interest, and getting them interested is half the battle. I'm not sure if that's what you were thinking when you said books, but I'd be happy to recommend some.

Welcome from North Kentucky.
I would start the older one off with one of the best survival novels ever written for either child or adult. Hatchet, by Jerry Paulson
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatchet_(novel)
It is one of a series and this particular text won the Newberry Prize for children's literature.
It is very realistic, informative and well written and used copies are everywhere. It is required reading in the 6th grade public school literature classes around here. What can I say, its Kentucky!
At 10 he is already old enough to understand the concept of shelter, water, fire, controlling panic and making himself visible for rescue.
The 4 and 6 year olds present a special set of goals. You need to get them out of th4e house, take them on short hikes and concentrate on basics of personal safety. Get them used to seeing the lizards, bugs and snakes and getting their toes and fingers in the dirt.
I still remember one niece going nearly into spasms during one simple sidewalk hike because she had gotten mud on your new white tennis shoes!
Family campouts in the back yard or in state park campgrounds are also good experience at this age. My kids loved camping at that age.
I also stressed obedience while in the outdoors to my kids at that age. When I said STOP I meant right where they were. It was a safety issue, not a control issue. One more step might put them over a cliff, on top of a rattlesnake or if un an urban setting, right in the middle of a traffic distress.

^What Ranger said.
And welcome from Bogart. I'm just outside of Athens.
For the younger ones you might consider Hug-A-Tree tree program. Here's a good video that shows how it works.

You should get each one of them a survival whistle. There are a lot of good ones available. Just make certain it is peeless. Storm whistles, Fox whistles, NATO whistles and Jetscream are all examples of really good whistles. They should wear it around their neck or attached to their clothing so it can't be lost. If they become lost in the woods they can blow a whistle all day long.

I agree with everyone above especially Crashdrive and Hunter63 about taking it slow and easy. Make it fun and don't go extreme, make it fun for EVERYONE! My father had been an extreme survivalist for decades before I was born but always took the time to make it fun with great enthusiasm for everyone including my sister. Mother was also very skilled in outdoor living.
Don't rush to buy lots of gear or you could have a storage space full of stuff you rarely use. Research it carefully, everyone's style is unique to them. My youngest (now almost 14) does not care to hike or paddle much, she mostly just hangs around camp or cabin in a hammock reading or texting if there is a signal. She will not fish or hunt or play sports just wants to dance. Breaks my heart a bit but at least she gets out to the wilderness a bit and tells her suburban school friends some interesting stories.
Much of what you read about survival will not apply to you and your family so use common sense and be selective.

Well, Kyrat recommended Hatchet, which is pretty high on the list of books I would recommend too. My favourite when I was 10 was My Side of the Mountain my Jean Craighead George. It's a great story, a classic book, and throughout it are things you could try with your kids, like whittling a fishhook from a twig, or making willow whistles and such. It's the book that first made me want to run off into the woods.
Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare is another good one...more historical fiction, but it always made me want to get out and try things, and it demonstrates that you can't just go out into the woods without learning stuff.
Now, these are a bit older, and are non-fiction, but there was a Canadian couple who were making a career of going on year long wilderness adventures, and then writing books about them, from the mid 80's to the late 90's. Ian and Sally Wilson. Wilderness Seasons details building a cabin in northern BC and living in it for a year. Arctic Adventures is about canoing and dogsledding in what was then the NWT, but is now Nunavut. The Kivalliq region, if anybody was wondering. Those and the previous two books I mentioned were among the books my parents bought for me when we moved to the NWT (again, now Nunavut) when I was a kid. They have also written Gold Rush, which is about recreating the journey of people who were travelling to the Klondike during the gold rush, and Wilderness Journey, which is about the Voyageur life. Very cool, and it made me want to build my own birchbark canoe. WHich I still kind of want to do one day.
Farley Mowat...be warned, great author, did not let the facts get in the way of the truth. For kids, Owls in the Family, the Dog Who Wouldn't Be...these are semi autobiographical, based loosely on Mowat's childhood in Saskatoon. Moving north, we have lost in the Barrens and Curse of the Viking Grave. Fantastic examples of the "Intrepid Boy Faces the WIld" genre. really cool.
James Houston...he passed a number of years ago, and his books aren't always print, which is a pity because he wrote some great books about the north, including some solid YA titles. if you can get them, he wrote a trilogy about two boys named Mathew and Kayak, and things that happened to them on the land, all kind of wrapped up with prospecting and in one case biological research. Frozen Fire, Black Diamonds, and Ice Swords. Good books, set on or near Baffin Island. Woot. There's also River Runners, which is set in Northern Quebec, and aside from being about a wilderness adventure can also a teach a thing or two about the fur trade, which admittedly might only be exciting for Canadian history buffs, but still. There's also Drifting Snow, which has a young Inuk woman as the protagonist, which is really a pleasant change, since so many of these types of books are about a plucky young white guy learning things from his trusty young native and/or inuk friend.
There are also, of course, the Little House books, which have a pretty solid message of self reliance, and if you are reading them aloud, would be okay for all of the kids. Bit of an uneasy racial undertone in Little House on the Prairie, but a good book nonetheless.
If I think of anything else I will add it, and I'm sure there are others with suggestons.

Only one part of survival that you may or may not be interested in is a knowledge of flora and fauna. Several ways that I found that were more successful with my oldest daughter but highly successful with other kids are these:
Nature hikes with a Master Naturalist thru your local Parks and Rec Center can be very inspiring for both child and parents, but also call or email your counties Master Naturalist program and ask about any other programs. I don't highly recommend getting certified, it is expensive and requires a large time commitment. I have heard Cobb County's Master Gardener program is very good but that is also very costly in time and money.
A local University and also Arboretum near me have excellent summer programs that teach young children about native plants and animals (day summer camps). I have only helped out on the last day with the kayak instruction, but was impressed at how well some of the kids could correctly identify and explain various flora and fauna as we paddled along. They were also very good at finding fossils and of coarse handling a personal watercraft after my instruction. LOL
My kids were in the YMCA's Princess/Guides (formerly Indian Princess/Indian Guides) program but I was not nearly as impressed with that it was mostly just social BS. Drunken Dads blowing up cans of beans in campfires and nearly shooting each other with BB guns because some of them were so pathetically clueless. But then a few of us from our local school planned our own campout at a private campground and that was much better. I set up a gun range and we had a great time. The girls built their own shelter in the woods and they talked about it for months thereafter.

I took a compass reading and orienteering class at a local outdoor store. Lots of parents there with their 10-ish aged kids. A few of them were Scouts.
Something like that requires reading and comprehension skills, plus the ability to sit in a class for a couple hours. Getting out and doing the bushwhacking was fun though.
Check out local botanical gardens or plant nurseries. They sometimes offer classes on wild edibles and things like that. Wildlife sanctuaries and some fish and game places also have classes, usually for free.
I was going to suggest My Side of the Mountain as a book to read. I know a lot of people here don't like Tom Brown but his book The Tracker was a great inspiration to me to go outdoors and learn. It would be suitable for a 10 year old (there is a paragraph or two where they find a body in the forest but it isn't too horrible.) I've not been too impressed with many of his other books.
My dad was keen on going to National Historic Sites in our area and looking at the history of how people lived in the 1700s/1800s. He was a 70s Back-to-the-land type and we learned all kinds of things. We have Sturbridge village up here as well as the Plymouth Colony re-enactors and of course Minuteman National Historical Park. Lots of chances to see living at its meanest and learning ways to live closer to the land. Not knowing your home situation or how much interest you have in the "back to the land" movement but gardening and raising your own food can be fun for kids. We used to let neighbor kids pick vegetables in our garden to take home with them. The only vegetables they ever ate willingly, according to the parents. We also raised chickens and made an annual visit to the slaughterhouse where we bought a steer and a porker, going halvsies with a neighbor on both. One neighbor kid never forgave me for teaching him where his meat really came from. LOL. Learning to freeze stuff and to can stuff was also part those years. I still do it today. It's a fun part of late summer and fall.
If your kids are into Zombies, the CDC has a fun website that they actually started as a joke but have continued it as a means to get more people interested in immediate emergency survival. Check out the educator section here: http://www.cdc.gov/phpr/zombies.htm
Most important, just go out and do. Do hiking. Do swimming. Do fishing. Do some camping even if at first it is only in the back yard. Try some gardening or some Pick-your-own food gathering.
Lowkey brings up some good points. Don't forget your local state parks and DNR. Both usually offer free classes. Here's a link to Georgia's state park calendar.
http://gastateparks.org/calendar
Here's a link to Georgia's Junior Ranger program. It looks like it's held at 63 locations state wide.

welcome!
Lot's of good advice given thus far. For me, I started doing basic camping, hunting and fishing growing up. In high school and college I started doing longer and more intense trips. When I started a family I became more of a prepper that enjoys outdoor activities.
I would say that you , and the rest of the family, should prepare for common, minor, emergencies such as water outage and power outage. Also get started with basic camping in your back yard then move on to a local state park. Once you have upgraded to the state park, then get into the hiking and fishing activities. As Rick pointed, DNR is always giving free or inexpensive classes and tours. That is where I would start if I was in your shoes. Keep it basic and make it fun and you and your family will have good time doing it.

And remember that almost everything you do outdoors is building survival skill, from learning eatable foods, fire starting skill or cooking over the open fire to playing a soccer game. Even organized sports builds health, stamina and teamwork skills.
Take the experiences you normally have an build on them. Even a back yard BBQ has many teachable moments. It does not matter if it is a hot dog or a squirrel on that roasting stick, they cook the same.

This is fairly obvious advice but is often ignored by many including myself:
Test out ALL your survival gear regardless of how highly recommend it may be for use in the wilderness, at home or vehicle. This includes apparel, water storage, camping food BEFORE you go camping, setting up a tent/tarp/hammock in backyard or local park BEFORE you go camping. Practice casting fishing rods without hooks, shooting air guns and small recurve bows with young kids (this may be prohibited at State and City parks). If safe try out camp stove on windy back porch or yard or neighborhood park, actually cook a meal on it, young kids may think this is fun. My teenage daughters would however be mortified if I did it with them today in our neighborhood.
But in general there is a lot of testing mostly fun that can be done long before you go to the wilderness with virtually every piece of gear.
Edit: I would be very hesitant to introduce most suburban kids to dehydrated and vacuum sealed meals but it is possible to live for months with no refrigerator, I have. If you go that route have it as an alternative meal. I have one friend almost 70 y.o. who has primitive camped for decades but cannot stand dehydrated meats so he only does short trips or by large canoe which has severely limited him all his life but he is OK with it. To each their own.

In spite of all the problems stated and precautions and recommendations thrown at you the mission you are on is a valid one and you should follow it to the best of your abilities with the resources you have and in the place where you are.
And do not imagine that the "survival training" will be for that once in a lifetime outdoor disaster.
Back in 1996 my kids were both in their mid teens, and I was the custodial parent and working 1 1/2 hours commute away teaching in a "Wilderness school".
A bitter winter storm hit the area and all power was knocked out for more than 1 million people. My 1 1/2 our commute turned into a 7 hour trip of horrors.
One of the horrors was knowing my kids were at home alone, with no power, in the middle of a raging snowstorm.
I swung the Jeep into the driveway through a foot of snow at nearly midnight to find my kids and a half dozen of their friends having a party, playing the battery powered boom box, with all the candle lanterns from our reenactment equipment fired up and a big pot of beans and tatters simmering on top of the emergency kerosene heater. they were totally unconcerned with the situation and their first comment was that they were celebrating the fact that they had a snow day coming to them.
The house was warm and filled with light, they were happy and safe and I never felt I needed to worry about their resourcefulness again.
They were 15 and 17 at that time.

Spot on KyRat. My preparedness motto is "Turning crisis into a mere inconvenience". No power? Great, lets cook out and play bored games. If it is cold, fire up a couple of heaters and lanterns. Who needs the TV? We will break out some board games and a deck of cards. More family time is always good anyway. Heck, invite the neighbors over and we'll pop open some wine for the ladies and pass out bourbon to the fellas. Your kids got it right..... Have a party!

Many "camp foods" even for light weight backpacking with no refrigeration can be found at just about any grocery store in North America or Europe, also the fuel. I don't have a strong preference for stoves. Certain ones are better for certain situations, temperatures etc. I enjoy cast iron Dutch oven but if there is a burn ban, or it is a BP trip this is not best obviously. Propane is cheap and easy but not great if traveling by tiny WW kayak or backpacking long distances. Bottom line think outside the box, camping and "prepper" supply stores never need to be your only source.
10480
Examples of 2 of hundreds of possiblities. I thought these were funny Cajan made in Canada by Knorr, Pad Thai recommends that you use Crayfish that you could theoretically catch or trap in a creek/river/swamp but I have found are very difficult they are tricky little bugs, best to take a vacuum pack of tuna/salmon or some dried sea food or whatever just in case. LOL BTW I have been to restaurants in southern LA/New Orleans that had Red Beans and Rice that was more than 10X better but they did not have a store in the wilderness. Dried jerky meats taste better than vacuum packed chicken chunks but I didn't have any on hand for this photo. Options are unlimited try it in backyard or neighborhood park if it is terrible run to a FF restaurant or eat PB&J sandwiches.
Edit: That huge Trangia fuel bottle is mostly just for long term storage of alcohol, several small bottles depending on length of trip and meal plan, number of people etc. I imagine a reused shampoo bottle or whatever would work just fine if you washed it out dried it well and improved the seal, then tested it for leaks and degradation over time.

TX, there is nothing wrong with "camp foods" per se when it comes to prepping. I choose to prep with foods I already eat. Canned goods are great. Vegetable only need to be opened and heated up. Canned fruits are good to go right away. Canned meats can be heated and ate by themselves or can be mixed with other things. After canned goods, you have lots of sauces and pastas that are shelf stable. Keep some salt, pepper, sugar, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and powdered milk around and the possibilities become endless. All you gotta do is check out what was done prior to the refrigerator becoming a standard household item. I find these items to be way less expensive than "camp food" anyway. Just my thoughts and opinions.

natertot I was only trying open up the range of possibilities not limit or restrict them in any way. I once car/canoe camped with a lawyer friend (we car pooled) he had a box of all canned soups which he preferred. These were very fast and easy for him, not easily damaged and required minimal camp stove fuel, just a few of several advantages.
Even when I must travel very light and a ice cooler is not possible I sometimes pack some frozen meat around a frozen quart of sports drink wrapped in minimal insulation for the first or 2nd night's meal just as a psychological boost because for days thereafter it will be "Mountain House" or "Backpacker's Pantry" or something I put together myself from the grocery store. A friend of mine dehydrates most all his own meals and his refried beans are the best I have ever had, absolutely no gas problems for me and that is very unusual. IMO there are no wrong ways to do it if car camping, backyard or traveling for weeks by foot in extremely remote wilderness areas of the west such as the Continental Divide Trail, Frank Church Wilderness, BWCA or wherever.
Edit: Once on a different trip I packed my multiple day thick wall cooler with extra ice to be left in the vehicle at the trail's end and one "new guy" was all ticked off with me about it. Then several days later when we reached the vehicle and he had a cold beer he was all surprised at the psychological boost it gave him and decided that I was not such an idiot.

I don't think any of us on here get more excited than when somebody like you comes on and asks for help! Anyway, Hatchet is a great book! I read it after seeing the movie based on it: "A Cry in the Wild."
http://www.amazon.com/Cry-Wild-Jared-Rushton/dp/6305865612/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1420831333&sr=1-1&keywords=a+cry+in+the+wild
Now is a great time to also watch movies about survival since the weather can keep you inside.
As for other types of reading material, well, I don't know what the weather is like where you live, but right now we've got blowing snow, wind chill down to minus 30 degrees, and the only way I'll camp out is if my house blows away...which might just happen...lol. A book that I recommend for yourself is "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon;" by Stephen King. A great survival story. It makes you think about what to put in your child's book bag/backpack. Another thought is the 6 part blog I wrote on here about survival. It's taken from an older edition of the Boy Scout Field Book and, IMO, a great place to start. Scroll down to the "intro" then work your way back up. I wrote this for a "fast track" of written survival knowledge for beginners.
http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/blog.php?296-Sarge47/page4
There is a plethora of material available, but those who advocate starting out in your living room are "spot on!" "The journey of a thousand leagues begins with a single step." Have fun learning! Loving the outdoors is the best way!...:1:
