I've started to play around with small backpacking hammocks and have found I really like them. I just have a cheapo from Walmart. It is time to upgrade. However I'm not sure which direction to go. I went to REI and looked at the ENO and liked them. However one of the guys there suggested I look at the grand trunk. They have good reviews as well. They also have one with a mosquito net on it that is less than 2 pounds all together. I'm leaning toward that one. Then you have the Hennesy but they are pretty proud of them.
Who here uses them and what do you have and why?

I 'll stick with my Henessy Asym Deluxe hammock.

I have a couple of hammocks. I use my Hennesey the most. But the Eno Doublenest with the mosquito net is pretty compact. If I hadn't already bought the Hennesey years ago, I would probably buy the Eno and just use a bit of 3 mil black vizqueen for a tarp.

I've got a couple of Grand Trunks (Hybrid and ultra light) and use an ENO mosquito net. Love em both.

Another for Hennessey (Ultralite)

Blackbirds look nice too, but never tried one.

Hard to choose between ground shelter and hammocks. The obvious (you need trees)... But you can set up in areas you couldn't set up a traditional shelter, such as the sides of relatively steep hills. But, it sucks when you can't find trees to make it work.

Just remember, you will need insulation. groundpads are great for sleeping on the ground, but a necessity when in a hammock in most places. I set mine up in my living room the first time I got it and froze (not even cold in there) with nothing between me and the hammock.

There are at least a dozen very good hammock manufactures that you would probably be very happy with. Pros and cons with bug net integrated or add on and as wilderness medic said the bottom insulation is the most expensive and critical component of all. I rarely have difficulty finding something to hang from but am very resourceful, I.e. tripods, automobile top rack, fence posts, shed rafters etc. But high on a mountain above tree line or on a ocean/river sand bar I always take a tent because using a hammock as bivy sack is not idea but just minimally functional. Be sure to read some articles at:
http://theultimatehang.com

That popular forum on hammocks is also helpful but some people there are extremely opinionated and a few are very negative including some of the moderators, I should just be nice and not say any more. ENO brand is very good but a little over priced it upsets me that some people at that hammock forum are so excessively negative about ENO. Thousands of people have ENO hammock and really like them they are just fine. But also look into Hammeck, Warbonnet, Dream Hammocks and many others. I personally do not have a dog in the fight, DIY with a polyester tablecloth ($15) is a good enough option to consider, and a $9 foam pad from Walmart as insulation. This is not idea but it works. If you want ideas on tarp I can give you some. $10 from Woot is functional. If you have budget for it spend $1000 or more and buy everything from Warbonnet Outdoors instead, BUT THIS IS NOT NECESSARY!!!
I hope these thoughts helped and didn't confuse the heck out of you.

edit: I attended this Texas Hang as well as the August Texas Butt Bake

http://theultimatehang.com/2014/11/trip-report-texas-group-hang-2014/

I strongly recommend you attend a "hang" or hammock campout near you in a tent or whatever shelter you prefer. You will be able checkout may different styles of hammocks, suspension, insulation, tarps and methods of hanging: i.e. tripods, 2x4 stuck in the ground, mono poles, ultra light backpackable poles, and stuff ya just got to see for yourself.

Well..where I live, I do not an insulation for my hammock, but I do need a fan...and I have tested many hammocks here including the ENO...I like the Hennessy as the nets do not touch my face or seem to envelope me..the Hennessy gives a feeling of a roomy hammock..which it is.

Hennessy and Clark were two of the first manufactures to come up with innovations that helped "jungle hammocks" begin to appeal to a much wider audience. Back in the 1970s my first "jungle hammock" was a Vietnam War era model that included the netting, tarp and hammock all in one integrated unit and was very small and hot, by comparison even the very small Scout Hennessy model is much better. But those from Vietnam War were much better than the Duck Cloth/canvas ones from WWII/Pacific Rim. Sorry for all that, I enjoy hammock history; don't get me started on Captain Cook, Christopher Columbus or thousands of year of Indigenous Americans: Mayans, Amazonians, Caribbeans.

for fun entertaining youtube videos watch those by: shugemery
high quality educational ones, also fun: Derek Hansen
especially this one:

http://youtu.be/c0-uOekjcU0?list=UU4fM5rkNJYHsxHqemrkT5vg

some fairly good, very to the point ones from WarBonnetGuy, Brandon : Warbonnet Outdoors

BTW today you can buy XL from Hennessy and other that are super comfortable or Nano from Grand Trunk and others that are super light and compact.

So what are your requirement? Mostly ultra light backpacking, car camping, winter (below freezing), summer very hot and humid, budget total cost of everything under $100 or total cost under $2000 (either is fine). What do you already have such as sleeping bag, tarp, ground pad. IMO hammocks are far more customizable than tents so to some degree you can mix and match, but over time you will accumulate a lot of hammock related gear and some you will no longer use so be slow to buy and spend a lot of time researching it all. Suspension is also a big deal, I love whoopie slings etc but mostly just use webbing straps, buckles and carabineers, I have lots of cool Ti stuff from Dutch but bottom line I want multipurpose gear that is very fast to setup and take down. Ti carabineer from Keith rated at 700 lbs or aluminum climbing biner rated at over 5000 lbs that I can repel down a hillside with and hang water bottle etc from BP with is much better than Dutch Clip, IMO. (but Dutch Clip is a fun toy I like to play with).

My requirements? Basically right now the hammock I have stays in my day bag. I carry that bag on day trips, hunting, and maybe an overnighter. Nothing beats a mid afternoon nap after lunch when turkey hunting. I just want something that will hold up decent and not break the bank. I was looking at the Hennessy. At first I thought they were over priced but then saw what is " standard" with them. If I did an ENO or grand trunk the bug net, rain fly are all extra. Hennessy is included. So now I'm kind of leaning that way.
Back to requirements. Right now I don't do a whole lot of long distance stuff so weight isn't a huge deal. However it looks like most of the hammocks are all pretty close in weight and size packed up with the exception of a couple super small stuff.
I'm looking for mostly spring and early fall maybe some summer stuff. I don't see myself doing much really cold weather stuff with it. Most of my outdoor stuff is spring gobbler, fall turkey in PA and muzzleloader season. All usually fairly moderate weather. The fall turkey in Pa being the most unpredictable usually. That's kind of what I'm wanting to do. Hike in off the beaten path. Set up a hunters camp and hunt a few days away from the crowds.

I use a Hennessy Exp. Asym. I love it, but more importantly my back loves it. I have a hard time standing upright when I sleep in a bed, but have a much easier time when I sleep in my hammock.

Best to find an appropriate balance between comfort and light weight for your needs: most people find that very thin fabrics (under 1 oz/sq yd of nylon) are OK for day use and SUL backpacking but heavy weight 1.9 oz or more nylon or polyester single or double layer is much more comfortable but not great for long distance backpacking. Check out this chart from Dream Hammocks it will give you a "ball park" number based on your body weight of the fabric you may want to consider: http://www.dream-hammock.com/ComfortRating.html

Fabric's weave also makes a difference so if you are able to use HyperD Nylon RipStop it will be a little more comfort.
http://ripstopbytheroll.com/collections/1-6-oz-hyperd-ripstop-nylon
Kammock has been using a similar fabric for several years, but a Hammeck (no net is $50, Netty starts at $125 but there are many other "cottage" makers) can semi-custom make one with your choice of color with this HyperD fabric as well. Worth extra $ IMO.

Integrated bugnet is great for Spring and Fall, I prefer not to have a bugnet attached in winter because it gets in the way of adjusting under quilt (UQ) and few bugs when temps are below freezing and traps breath moisture/condensation (tuck up in peak or roll up on side or detach if possible). In summer bugnet is just hotter and battery fan, bug repellant and Permethrin fabric spray/drench for fabric is all I need. But that is my personal opinion, others may will strongly disagree.

One of my favorite hammocks that I use the most often is a "camo" double layer 1.9 oz Warbonnet Blackbird XLC, but this is excessively heavy and expensive and I do NOT recommend it for most people. NOT a light weight backpacking hammock.

Generally longer hammocks are more comfortable, but if you use "bridge" or "hybrid mini-bridge" hammock you can effectively use a shorter hammock and thus smaller span between trees/posts will work and coresponding shorter lighter tarp (just need to pull out side panels bit more). G.E. hammocks: Minimum width is 48" due to diagonal sleep position but I strongly prefer 58" or more. There is a great YT video that demonstrates how much flatter a longer Gathered End (GE) hammock allows you to sleep. I could find it if you want.

Grand Trunk Nano-7 is lighter than GT ultralight compare the fabric. Both are good hammocks for the price. Occasionally Cabelas will have a GT made especially for them of different color and a foot longer. If on sale this is a good deal IMO. Their netted version is probably better for you. But here is a good one to keep in your car for casual use, just for fun.

I have an ENO doublenest with their Atlas Straps. I originally bought it for my wife for her birthday to use when we went tent camping. Since then, I have added the bug net and a 10x10 tarp and have used it for my sleep system when I hike. If I was starting over, I might look at other, lighter options, but I have been extremely pleased with this set up.

Very important to consider total cost. Will the ground pad you may already own work as bottom insulation? (Much cheaper than goose down UQ which is better for SUL backpacking.) Best if ground pad is self inflating and has rounded ends but almost any pad will work well enough with several minor modifications and adjustments. Also some small companies/craftspeople will discount or negotiate with you on the extras others will not. Existing mummy sleep bag works OK as "top quilt" may work better if you remove zipper and re-stitch it. Do you or someone you know have a sewing machine and know how to make a basic hem? I bought a Singer 201 in original cabinet for $50 that is 10 years older than me, gear driven, no belts so it can sew thru thick leather. She is my baby. Red Line Oil CV-2 Synthetic Grease and silly stuff like that.

Txyakr, thanks for all the info. I appreciate it a bunch.

I'm thinking this may be the way I go.

Of course 15 bucks for a grand trunk at cabelas in the link you posted is pretty tough to turn down. I may grab one of those just because.

I already have a small 8x6 tarp I can use until it quits on me.
As far as pad , generally I just use a cheap yoga mat workout type pad from Wally World. It works for me.

Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter is a good one, difficult to explain but if you use a continuous ridge line to suspend tarp from might be able to suspend your GT-SB bugnet from it as well. Google "continuous ridgeline"
http://theultimatehang.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/hardware-continuous-ridgeline-tarp.gif

Should "Never do math off cuff online" but I believe asymmetrically hung your 8x6' tarp will have a ridge line of about 10' this is ideal, IMO.

My guess is that yoga mat will work down to 50F but I have not tried it, and I have tried a lot of things mostly just for fun. Add mylar space blanket to radiate your heat back and it may help a bit more, SB does not work well if you wiggle in sleep much. Often people who move around in a flat bed sleep are very still in a hammock, it is just a more natural position IMO.

If your pad moves around too much try sticking silicone dots on the bottom of it. I was told women use them for fashion accessories. There are also many other solutions that can work. http://www.beauty.com/products/prod.asp?pid=350671&catid=298485&aid=338669&aparam=350671&kpid=350671&CAWELAID=120142990000083172&CAGPSPN=pla

No need to mail order it just ask a woman where she would buy these.

BTW I think the GT-SB is significantly better than a similar one from that BG guy. His uses white netting which is difficult to see out of and overall quality is very poor. Bugnet (no-see-um mesh) should be black or very dark camo. Also some people hung his to tight and ripped the netting. Use 30 degree from horizontal on suspension. GT-SB at least a little better than Byer, but I like Byer hammocks they make a few that are good. Also better than Yukon Outfitters which are not bad, a good hammock to get started with. All of these are MUCH better than what I started with.

Big joy of hammock camping is the view as you fall asleep and wake up etc. Can also be a great hunting stand, just use a full body harness if high in the trees. That is a whole another very complicated threat for the hunting forum/threads.

Old school survival hammock was a "net" woven hammock "Mayan" style. These are still available but not very comfortable. Creek Steward used one to trap a duck on TWC. "Fat Guys in the Woods" Not sure how realistic that was but these are multipurpose for hundreds other purposes: can bundle a lot of items in it use as sling or backpack replacement, hang from pole between two people.
Here is one, very small also models in XL this retailer has up to 800 lb but I have seen over 1000 lbs and huge. For minimalist survival I would buy in Dark Green, Nylon to use for trapping animals and fish etc in worst case situations. Very Old School Spec Ops stuff.

http://www.hayneedle.com/product/largemazatlanmayanhammock.cfm

Small size on sale about $18, larger typically on sale $70, these places have sale prices VERY often so DO NOT rush to buy one. Think about it, last thing most of us need is more camping stuff we never use, or used once.

A roll of Reflectix radiant barrier from your local H.W. store works well and has dozens (100s) of other uses, like to insulate your cook pot, envelope to cook dehydrated meals longer, water bottle, cover for ice chest, etc. Probably a Thread on it at this forum, need to find and add link.

I saw his YT video on climbing rope suspension while back and liked it. He got some undeserved critisism for it, which was ignorant. The thick bark of a mature tree is not damaged by 1, 2 or 3 wraps of thick 1/2" climbing rope (pressure on cambium layer is distributed), and only problem with stretch is if it is very long and single strand. Multipurpose items are key to survival.

For delicate young trees I sew my own loops on polyester webbing straps but Gary at this place can make some custom or sell you off-the-self straps with buckles that are very good for a low price:
http://www.readystrap.com/rst_010.htm

BTW Reflectix is basically a Mylar "emergency" Space Blanket bonded on both sides of bubble wrap, thus it works much better than just the S.B. because of the trapped air, and does not tear as easily. Only problem is the extra bulk but you can probably attach to the outside of your backpack if not climbing through thick brush.

Can always make a simple "debris bed" between fallen logs on the ground and cover leaf litter with hammock fabric if it gets VERY cold. Suspend tarp down low, cover with debris, hot rocks from beside fire. Bottom line: be very resourceful and creative.

My father would often do whatever he could then just sit back in hammock or by fire and say "sheer luxury" others camping with us would be complaining about not having all the comforts of civilization, he taught me to be resourceful and content. He was very hard working and creative.

That is a great minimalist survival hammock Tokwan. I strongly prefer a palm leaf or thatch shelter roof over a tarp because it breaths better in hot and humid weather but takes longer to set up and is often prohibited (in State Parks especially). But if you just pull the tarp to the side and only extend over if it starts to rain it works out OK. Obviously a tarp traps heat and humidity, just like the rainfly of tent does.

A cheap and easy mosquito net is from a military surplus online or local store, just add draw string or velcro/omni-tape to small cutouts at the ends and it works OK. Shock cord around the bottom or just fold over and pin with clothes pins. I used this for years it works OK but reduces wind flow traps humidity and is hot in summer time. Many other great ideas online Xtrekker has a YT showing how to sew an integrated zipper bug net onto a hammock but this requires great tailor skills. A simple pull over sock with shock cord draw string on both ends is simple but not easy to get in and out of. Or this one from Fronkey is popular:

http://youtu.be/dfEM6yEO268

You can also quickly make a hammock in the field by whipping the ends of a tablecloth, military poncho, poncho liner, ghillie fabric etc etc and hang it up; takes about 3-15 minutes. Derek Hansen has one of the best YT videos on this. Then just throw bugnet fabric over ridge line and weight it down with pebbles or sticks, works better if everything was sprayed with Permethrin and/or Deet. Beats sleeping in the mud crawling with critters and having a sweaty back, IMO. But if you are in a forward operating position that may be your only option or your hammock hanging up above the ground will be shot full of holes. So whatever works for you, LOL.

TXyakr, that was somme good reply. But being where I am and my climate, with all the reptiles around, I would prefer the 7 eleven poncho (two of them) anytime. I hate making emergency shelters out of leaves as
1. Too much of gathering and tying needs to be done.
2. The tree green Viper, a very venomous serpent, loves leaves and hate if one is in my roofing.
3. Takes too much time.
4. You leave a mess when you leave the area.

The 7 eleven disposable ponchos act as a rain poncho and weights next to nothing.
I am concerned about the weight of my survival kit and would like to be as light as possible.
Still it depends on wherever you are and what works for you.
