Just Completed a 2 Days Introduction to Basic Survival

Hi Guys, I have just completed a 2 days Introduction to Basic Survival for teenagers. Their ages were between 13 to 16 and I had a class of about 53 students. I had 3 assistants to help me. Then the class grew to 60 as 7 teachers decided to join the class.
What I taught:-
1. Stay away from the TV shows as surviving in the Malaysian Jungles is totally different than what you see on TV.
2. Why people get lost in the jungle or got left behind.
3. What to do if one get lost -apply S.T.O.P.
4. Be prepared before going into the jungle- what to bring/prepare a survival kit.
5. Make a survival kit-what would you need, - depending where you are going.
6. How to use the survival kit.
7. Dos and don'ts in the jungle or when you are lost.

I taught them never to sleep on the ground, and how to sleep off the ground by making emergency hooch. They were also taught how to make fire the primitive way and all agreed that they should carry at least two fire kits.

They were taught how to live off a banana tree, getting water from bamboo, filter water and cook water in bamboo

They were successful in making a hooch out of some wood, some rafia(plastic) strings and a 7/11 disposable poncho....

FYI, it rained heavily and so we had to move the class to an open hall...however the hooch that we made withstood the heavy rain and was standing till we took it down.

Awesome job. I too have taught survival classes. Not in a juggle setting though. That's way outside my knowledge. I taught a southern United States and swamp survival. It's a great experience as I'm sure you've realized. Keep it up and I hope we hear more

This is just an introduction to basic survival. It should allow them to survive 2 or 3 days. I did this for free, having the urge inside me to teach the kids out there the right thing. I do not want them to copy the tv shows...its really dangerous.
The school now wants me to go full scale and is recommending my class to the Ministry of Education. I have done for 2 Universities in the past.
The school wants to conduct a Premier Camping Day and wants me to take over the whole event. Of course they will pay...
Unfortunately I will have to decline in handling the whole event, but will only handle the survival part.

I have another class in a couple months for the same people. Its a continuation of the Introduction. I want to d this and prepare them before I have the school take them for a field trip and then we do it outside.
I plan 2 introduction classes in the school compound..(yep..our schools have have lots of space)..make them understand what it is all about, they should make their own survival kit, and then I will take tehm out into the filed and let them practice ...it wll be fun looking at the kids squirming when the leeches go up their legs...hahahahahaha

What was left of a whole banana tree...everyone wanted to taste the fruits, flowers, heart and the trunk...it rained the night before, so there was enough water for everyone.

It gave a great feeling of satisfaction and self achievement, knowing I am able to contribute something to the community. If you take a look at the hooch, that was the piece of plastic poncho I was talking about..no worries of snakes overhead when you sleep.

I love the hooch made by your students. It looks like all of your guys and gals had a lot of fun and learned alot. What is the most effective way to start a primitive fire in the Malaysian Jungle (as I come from Eastern North America)? I'm sure the humidity and moisture have to create some frustration when trying to create any sort of friction fire. Congrats on a good looking class.

Hi BrandonB. If we are talking about primitive fire making, I would say that the best for me is the bamboo saw. Yes , we can use the bow drill or the hand drill but the wood here are not that dry. Other people might not agree.

My rainforest has tons of bamboo. and some of them are already bent or broken due to the elephant trashing them. This helps me to get the supply of dry bamboo. Since the rainforest is always damp...the wood that lays on the ground are usually rotten or almost rotten.

I would say the bamboo saw is the fastest as:-
1. In contrary to fire making using wood, you need to choose the wood...but bamboo is bamboo.just get the drier ones.
2. Using wood requires you to prep the base plate, the drill ...bamboo is faster as the preparation is less.
3. You can get tinder from the bamboo shavings..and use the bamboo pieces as firewood...it a One Stop Fire Mart.

BrandonB, on the hooch...I am very much against using leaves as roofing for the hooch. Why? In the rain forest, there are too many snakes and most of them are poisonous. There is one particular viper that loves to hang from small branches..its called the Tree Viper..green in color.
I always insist my students that they should carry a disposable poncho, obtainable for less than a dollar at 7 Elevens.
This is very practical as :
1. It always rain here...and you can use the poncho as a rainwear.
2. Saves time of gathering leaves.
3. Avoid snakes from being in the roof.
4. Avoid cuts, ant bites, snake bites when you are gathering leaves.
5. Really waterproof.

I've done the bamboo fire saw and found it extremely tiring. But isn't all friction fire. I used Bamboo shavings but it would never burst into flame. It just burnt much like steel wool. I even tried starting the shavings with other coals and it would do the same thing. Took a firesteel to it and it caught flame with no trouble.

Hahahaha...but the question is primitive fire making methods. Of course a firesteel and cotton with 100% petroleum jelly is the best...but what about a lighter...hahahaha..that is one I carry in a plastic wrapping.

The bamboo shavings/scrapings just turned my ember into a much bigger ember. I've seen videos where they would ignite to flame. I figured the outermost water proof covering had something to do with mine failing to ignite. Do you remove that shiny(?) Covering off first and then make the shavings?

Yep..you shud do that...The blowing is the art..you gotta clasp the tinder correctly...try and practice,.. will get it..I always managed to get fire from this method.....Hey..if you've got a bigger ember..you should be able to fire started.....unless you are using green bamboo....use the brown dry ones.

My experience is that softer bamboos work better than the harder ones. For example, Bulu Padi (which is the bamboo used – when split – for making flooring and walls by the Orang Asli) is a hard, thick-walled bamboo and I can only get it to work if it is really dry, seasoned and hasn’t begun to rot.

I wouldn't say that. Now the big question. Were you able to get ember when you did the saw?
The only objective is to get the ember. The next big question is: Is your tinder really dry? The third question: Is your blowing correct?
In my early days, first problem was to get a tinder. Second problem was the blowing.
From what you have told me, seems like you were able to get ember. Now we need to identify whether your tinder is dry enough? If you are able to get a bigger ember, you should be on your way. Maybe you need to experiment whether your shavings are too coarse or too fine...It worked both ways with me. Maybe your blowing is not correct. When I get a bigger tinder, I would add some dry leaves and blow harder and harder...sometimes, the tinder might be damn to your handling too much where sweat gets into them.

The tinder was definitely dry when I started but maybe my sweaty hands did do a henderence. It was summer after all.

I do remember it was the first time I made an ember with friction but I don't remember if it was the first time of trying to blow an ember to flame. I have since blown magnification, bowdrill and handrill embers to flame. So I have experience with that now.

I don't think it was a case of the tinder too coarse or fine as it would readily ignite to flame from a firesteel.

I think I'll have to go out and find some more bamboo to give this a try again.

Yep...as from my experience..you have already achieved getting an ember...that's already a milestone...next is to make a full blown fire from the tinder.
