First off I'd ditch the wire saw. Most of the time they're a dismal disappointment. On his TV survival series "Fat Guys In The Woods,"(Sunday nights on the Weather Channel) Creek Stewart gives the 3 guys he's teaching each a blade from a bow saw, then teaches them how to make a bow saw in the woods using a bendable sapling branch. Finally, every item in your SK needs to be taken out in the field and tested ASAP. A lot of people make the mistake of waiting to actually use their gear for the 1st time when they actually find themselves in a true survival situation. That's way too late....:cowboy:

This bow saw blade can be removed from the frame and sticks installed in key rings and used as a 2 man saw. frame could also easily be made from all wood in the field

Now that makes sense....and I would carry a bow saw blade.....and really like the key rings idea.....and they will do some work.

I have broken every string saw I have ever tried, and would not take and carry one if it was free.

As a weird kid that spent a lot of time out doors in the woods and building things from logs .....a bow saw was asked for and received for like a 9th birthday....lots of jack pines fell to that.

Often wondered in later years why no one seemed to care that a bunch of kids went into the woods, block away from my house, cut down a bunch of about 8" jack pines and hauled the logs home on my Red Wagon....Still don't know.

I've got a wire saw but it's actually 3 braided strands and it works pretty good. I think I picked it up in the sporting goods section of a local department store it was 2 bucks so I figured what the heck I've wanted to try one of these anyway. I use the bow saw method most of the time and it works pretty well. I guess if nothing else it might save my knife for a little bit if I'm building a shelter or cutting through thicker logs.

Ok I am looking to have a bug out kit and am just starting off so far I have

-small multi tool
-fire starter
-bandana
-candle
-water purifier
-Compressed fuel
-Hunting Knife

-6 paracord bracelets

I am only fifteen and am starting to develop my skills I have practiced making survival shelters and fire(with a fire starter). I am trying to practice the bow drill fire technique as well. I am learning to become a trapper and fisher. I have got 50 and 30 pound test line to make snares and to fish with. I am planning to make a survival fishing rod like the one in crashdrive's video using the container. I know how to make fishing traps out of 2 liter bottles and how to make a deadfall trap as well as a fishing snare. I hope this will tell you a bit about my skills and hope that you can tell me some items that would go well in my kit. Thank you very much for your time.

Tactical vest isn't a bad idea. You might consider putting the smaller multi-tool in a vest pocket, along with a few other basics like a hook and line, that way if something bad happens to your pack.

Few suggestions, and yes does help to see where you are , and where you want to be.

I can see a little heavy on the sharp stuff...4 knives and two multi tools......No matter, I carry a few as well.
Might want to swap a knife for a small hatchet.
When things get too heavy just leave some gear in a second or third kit....No one says you have to have just one.
Most anyone that has been around awhile has many kits, sub kits, carry, stash .....kits every where

I would suggest a water bottle maybe a stainless single walled bottle..to carry and boil water in.
Maybe a pot or big cup....
I generally have a the old army 3 piece canteen, cup and stove combo in a carry case.

Flashlight(s) are a good idea.
Poncho or shelter half or both.
Survival blanket or large trash bags (2).

Might want to swap a couple of those bracelets for 50 ft. of Para cord or rope.

First aid kit and some practice, on how to do basic first aid....remember you may be alone.
Lots of Bic lighters to light fire with...then use your kit to practice.

My dad has a small hatchet I can I use but I plan on getting my own soon... I do have several metal water bottles I can put in my kits as well as a small traveling pot. I will get a good flashlight soon as well. I have several ponchos but I plan on getting a good thicker one too and put in a wool blanket I bought at an auction...I have like 20 of them. I can also throw in some trash bags. I do plan on getting some more paracord too soon. I just got a small first aid kit and put it in as well but I plan on upgrading that soon as well. I will be having my parents buy me a couple bic lighters as well. I appreciate your time.

A pocket size sewing kit might be a good addition. It isn't a whole lot of extra weight or space and it means being able to fix your clothes or gear if need be.

Great to see a young man interested in a Survival Kit.
My advice:-
- Know your turf, and where you are going, then come up with a survival kit.
- Try tor reduce duplicating items. I carry one multi tool and 1 knife in my survival kit. When I go to the jungle, I have my machete and my army water bottle on my belt plus a survival knife. I carry my survival kit in a water proof pouch on my belt. So in case my backpack gets ripped away/stolen/ lost in the river or I had to leave it behind in my bid to escape, I still have a machete, a survival knife, my water bottle and my survival kit.
- Usually, in our quest to come up with a good and practical survival kit, we need to do a lot of imagination, like in what situation we might get into.
And my final advise:..Practice, Practice and Practice.
I think I learnt: The knife, whistle, fire making kit, water container and a good poncho is the basic of my survival kit. These items must be of supreme quality.

I upgraded all my backpacking gear to light weight higher quality stuff before I finished school which wasn't too long ago so I'll give you a few tips.
1 use discounts wisely and shop around to get them, sign up for emails from websites you buy from and you'll usually get 20 % off coupons 2-3 times a year (usually in spring and fall) and you can save tons of money. I got a $400 dollar sleeping bag for less than $250 that way

2 since you're in michigan buy online and always spend enough to get free shipping that way you avoid sales tax.

3 save for better quality gear. It might take longer but it's well worth it in the long run. Convice your parents, family, friends, and neighbors to find work you can do for them (and get paid for) and even though it takes longer you' won't regret it. Shop around and research gear choices so you get the best gear with the features you want for the lowest price.

4 make good use of any site that price matches.

For a tent I LOVE my rei passage 2 take a look at it to see if you like it but it's really good quality plenty of space for gear reasonably light (plus has the rain fly only pitch option) and not too expensive it might even be on sale this week too for Labor Day.

Finally I would recommend you get a fixed blade knife you can get decent ones for pretty cheap and IMO that's the best investment you'll make for your survival kit.

I like your enthusiasm. Just starting out you at least are acquiring some good basic gear. I'm thinking that at this time it's more of an outdoor kit than a survival kit. That means that once you get it all together you'll need to try it out in the field of course. What better way than camping out and seeing how everything works. You'll soon find out if things hold up or not. Pics of your stuff would be great. What map did you get with the compass and what brand of compass is it? Does it read directions well?

Nice to see the enthusiasm. I'd be willing to guess that most everyone on here will say they have bought and discarded more stuff than they can remember. So, 1 suggestion is to be cautious with your cash. The knowledge you put in your head is worth more than whatever you put in your supply bag. Take time to continue reading and searching for more knowledge (either to confirm something, or look some more)

As noted above; what are your plans and/or possible situations? That helps dictate what you carry. You're not responsible for stocking up a survival bag for a family driving hundreds of miles away from home. Perhaps find a similarly minded buddy(s) and organize overnight/weekend camping trips. Possible worst case scenarios involving shelter, weather, food, water, orientation, and first aid for just this little jaunt will provide you with quite an extensive list of things you need to consider.

Since your Dad is "onboard" maybe you could get him involved with some of your planning. Something as simple as questions like.....

What do we do if the power goes out because of an ice storm?
How do we get drinking water if our water supply is cut off for some reason?
Where do we go if we have to evacuate because of an approaching storm?
What if we have to leave quickly because of wild fires?

With those sort of questions you can find out what the family plan is and maybe tailor your prepping toward that or to supplement that. You might even get him thinking about things that he had not thought of before.

If you stop at Secretary of State they have a map of michigan that's pretty good to have plus it's free but you get a map of all the major roadways plus info on state and national parks, hunting areas etc. it's not the best navigational map with detail of a specific area but to have an overview of the whole star can be useful too.

EDIT: I reread through the first page again and I'm going to second all the things that hunter63 mentioned.

You should definitely get a flashlight and headlamp those are some of the most useful items you'll have because you'll use them even during power outages.

A cooking set would also be good a metal cup a pot and frying pan/plate are all good since you need some way to cook stuff. You should look into water containers as well Nalgene bottles are cheap through their website and you get free shipping over $10. But you could also grab a water reservoir/water bladder type container those are good ways to carry larger volumes of water without taking up space or adding weight when empty.

More info on some of the items would be good, like what is the difference between the 3 knives and he hunting knife you listed for example. You should consider too the distance between your location and a proposed bug out spot and what methods you have to get there to see if it's practical or not

Yes! A First Aid kit is virtually useless in an emergency unless you know how to use it. I suggest you contact your local American Red Cross and find out when they give their First Aid classes. They are inexpensive and you'll receive their First Aid books along with the hands on instructions during the course.

If there is not a Red Cross organization near you, you might check with your local fire department and find out if their paramedics offer First Aid courses. Many people buy First Aid kits and never learn how to use them. When they really need first aid, they haven't a clue what the stuff in the kit is for.

I also suggest you take toilet paper, some soap, and baby wipes. Sanitation is important when you're "out there."

Stuff is always good to have, however knowledge will not let you down. Practice,Practice,practice, you need dirt time, worse case senario you don't have your bag. Can you boil water using stones,sodis? Can you build fire from scratch? shelter? Food? Cordage from scratch? Make a weekend of no preps available see how you fair. Harsh but very benefical and fun. The more you know the less you carry. This type of knowledge could save your life and make you elite. Regardless of age give it a go. i commend your interest in bushcraft at your age.

In your pack include a rat trap with a hole drilled in it to secure to a fixed surface,i also suggest cable snares. yes you can make from scratch however time is in short order in a SHTF senario. Also include personal hygene soap etc, Mullien makes great TP, pine sap makes good banadage. Learn and use.

I don't think there are hard and fast rules for what a kit must contain to be called a survival kit IMO as long as the contents of the kit keep you from dying its good enough to be a survival kit. Not to argue that's just what I think.
2 way radios are good as well but I still prefer a whistle over them since they aren't battery powered and you only need one to heard.

Well, if the building gets blown down on top of my vehicle, then it is going to be down on me too and most likely I won't survive that or at least will be trapped until someone digs my butt out of the rubble. But I do have a small kit that stays in my lunch box that sits under my desk along with a gallon jug of water.

it's always good to have a lighter to start a fire easy when you have to! practice other methods so if a lighter breaks\runs out of fuel...
A small poncho that folds up small would be a great addition..even if its one of the cheap single use ones, you'll be happy you had it when you need it!
With lashing you can make shelter/tools/snares... good lashing is always useful...I always go heavy on the paracord.
A sealable container to store water is pretty important! get a canteen or some type of sports bottle to clip onto that vest

All great ideas guys. I really want to add the water carry part. My army canteens are perfect. And I always try to focus on maximizing my medical Kit. When it all goes down you will find millions of tools and things to make multiple uses but finding medical supply is hard to come by. I pack my kits and act out a scenario to see how well it holds up and get ideas on what I can add. And you being a minor a slingshot is great. I'm not one to tell anyone to break the law and carry a firearm while underage but with your parents permission I would suggest becoming familiar with a firearm just in case it all hits the fan and you come across one. Also while planning out a bug out Kit consider where you would bug out. I have multiple kits for urban, in the home, in the city, and off the grid out in the sticks. But I applause you for making kits and becoming familiar with survival techniques. This are things I wish I'd done at your age. Keep it up

Kep your stuff cheap. learn to make alcohol stoves. I always have a DIY penny stove around. Or make those wood gas stove or hobo stoves. For day hikes, I suggest an army surplus water bottle, with its cup. For stove, you can use a can with solid fuel, or alcohol stove or wood stove. Learn to diy all these. I found that the alcohol stove cooks faster but you have to carry the alcohol. So I sometimes carry two types...

fingernail can take you out quicker than anything. you should need no more than two knives,set yourself up a nice survival vest in a way that if you lose or have to leave your pack somewhere you should carry your most essetial gear on your person.

I agree with Graf about PRACTICE! most important factor of kit. I.e. test/use every item and can you "MacGyver" alternatives for every item?

I was complaining to some friends about how delicate plastic lighters and ferro rods are and one suggested an SS peanut lighter.
Has anyone actually used one of these are they very reliable? I assume not as good as Zippo but very small.

Misc tips:
1. Great stuff at local thrift shops, just be very selective don't buy junk i.e. metal water bottles, pots, coats etc (independent stores in my area are usually cheaper than Goodwill and great discounts on Sundays, ask for sales days and never hesitate to bargain/negotiate down a price at checkout if it seems high) Dress simple not fancy but not like a homeless person or they will not want to encourage you to return. Thank your parents or friend for driving you there, you can save parent's money on clothes budget.

2. Store Duct tape in multiple places in your gear, roll up 1" around a plastic straw or itself put in 1st aid kit, around water bottle, your trekking poles etc. Use to patch everything, also yourself, blisters, or if minor cut, put over bandaid to make it more water resistant and keep dirt/infection out. Also extra wide electrical and Tenacious tape are occasionally useful.

3. I get rectified by AHR in First Aid CPR AED every 2 years. It is not easy to find a place that will teach this to individuals and do it well. If local rec center does not offer, try places of worship, child care facilities, where your parents or their friends work etc, local swimming pool life guard program any of these places may allow you to join in for $40-50 just ask very politely. Also try to find a very good instructor, some are rather poor. If local REI etc has a Wilderness First Aid class (NOLS) that is great but more time and money.
Also much of what is in a First aid kit can be used to start a fire, especially after it expires so don't just toss it, use for tinder.

This may not apply to you in Michigan but in the SW water is worth cacheing in the wet time of year for dry periods. But up north you may want to Cache insulation or pots, fuel etc. Food is rarely a good idea due to scavengers: bear and raccoons etc.

Cheap (almost free containers) are those 1 gallon or larger food (pickle) plastic jars that most restaurants will give you for next to nothing (ask a friend that works there) or buy online:

I also clean out and reuse peanut butter plastic jars etc, use tubes of silicon, wax or generic automotive gasket material to seal. The key is to use baking soda to remove all trace of food smell. Then bury the water or backup supplies deep in the ground, or in a hollow tree (vertical or horizontal, i.e. dead). Triangulate the position and write down in notebook. Geocaching is fine but GPS devices can fail so don't depend 100% on them.

I camp in remote parts of relative's and friend's ranchland in TX & OK were no human may go for days or years but if you are in an area more populated by humans then covering the cache very carefully with debris and making it look very natural is important.
The key is this allows you to camp miles from people during extreme drought or winter and be far from noise pollution, very relaxing. When the only signs I see of civilization for days are the jet contrails in the sky I am truly on vacation. Just don't drop a coke bottle or I may think that "The gods must be crazy" These are the sort of folks I grew up with as a small child they may be offensive to some city people, I hope not. People are people regardless of what they wear or how they live.

Not very good, those disposable water containers are notorious for leaking, and not UV resistant and rodents will chew thru them. Even if all you have is a tiny titanium cat hole trowel dig a hole and bury it, and cover with rocks and "punky" wood etc.

The best vest for under $40, under $10, actually, is the MOLLE II FLC. Look it up on ebay.com, I doubt that you'll be disappointed. You have the modularity of the webbing and a lot of real estate, so instead of taking the $40 you'd spend on a pre-set-up vest, get a few pouches and an FLC in a color of your choice, and you've got a decent little vest! Just my opinion, I'd like to hear feedback!
