Okay, I know that Hi-Point firearms are usually ostracized by the firearms community, generally regarded as cheap, unreliable and ugly. I think that they deserve another look. Yes they are ugly, but the reason for their blocky unattractive look lies in their construction. They are all blowback operated, which mean there has to be enough mass to keep the slide from flying off the gun under recoil. Most of us are familiar with blowback operated firearms, such as semi-auto .22 pistols and rifles. The venerable 10/22 is a simple blowback operation. When shooting calibers of higher power and recoil more mass is obviously needed. This also reduces the amount of moving parts, which aids in reliability.
Now, Hi-Points are not generally regarded as reliable, but I have shot 2 different Hi-Point .45's and every time I pulled the trigger it went boom! I find it odd how a $150 pistol can have a failure to feed and its a "piece of @#*$#!!"; but if its a custom tuned 1911 with a failure its because "the tolerances are tight"...I submit that the Hi-Point needs more love, not as a carry gun, but as a truck gun, boat gun, "hidden in my flowerpot" gun. These darned things come with a lifetime warranty that stays with the gun, so no matter how many hands the firearm goes through if it breaks then send it to the factory for free repair. Thats awesome.
These underrated handguns have just gotten better with the introduction of a laser just for them by Laserlyte, with a retail of a little over $100, that means you can have a reliable handgun in a popular caliber with a laser for less than $300. I dont personally own one, but I may soon!
Anybody own one of the pistols or carbines? C'mon, just admit it, I know you're out there.

They are what they are. Ugly, stout, brute force tools. Having said that I'll take one over a rock, club or a knife hands down. I don't own one, or have a dog in the fight other than a cruder tool is better than none. They make great cache weapons since you hope/pray it won't come to that, but the price point means you can have more than one. If I can't have my favorite tools I'll take a lesser that will get the job done.

There are several different fights a dog can get into over the Hi-point. Some are based on fact, some on logic and others on emotion.
People tend to polarize on the Hi-point in a love/hate scale that goes off the chart. You know there may be problems when you find that the members of the company backed forum that support that particular product refer to the service center as "Mother". (as in send it back to Mother for repair or call Mother for information) It is also the only place I know of where wrapping the grips with black tape is called "customizing".
My own opinions are based on years of working with this design, the materials and the concept. Some of the experiences have been good and some bad.
First I will say that having years of experience with the design a Hi-point will never be my "first choice" in any of its variations or calibers. I would not recommend a Hi-point to any person that was not an experienced shooter and knew what was happening inside that pistol.
A flawed design that works with small bore pistols might not be the best to expand mechanically and use on large bore guns. The Hi-point is a scaled up version of the old Jennings/Raven/Bryco pistols.
What you got there is a 9mm/.40/.45 caliber RAVEN !!!
No folks, I have worked on them all, stripped them to the last Philips head screw and plastic retaining pin and repaired them with bandaids, bobby pins and paper clips. They are all just a bigger or smaller version of the same thing.
My main concerns are the firing pin/ejector combination, the weak slide retention system and the very crude trigger block safety.
A simple failure to eject, that would be of no concern in most other designs, can render a Hi-point inoperable by bending the firing pin. The firearm will then not cycle, feed or fire. The optional malfunction is that the firing pin bends just enough to stick in its channel and fires full auto when the slide is dropped.
The slide retention system is not adequate for .40 and .45 caliber in my opinion. The company attempts to compensate for the weakness by shear mass in the surrounding parts, and much prayer. A .22 or .25 acp slide coming off the frame and headed toward your face is one thing. A 2 pound chunk of cast zinc breaking lose from 35,000cpu pressure is an entirely different matter.
The safety is a joke, topped only by the safety on the SKS. For all practical purposes the only real thing between safe and AD mode is the long and barbaric trigger pull.

If I buy a firearm I do not care what the warranty says. I definitely do not buy firearms because they have a good warranty!
I especially do not want to own a firearm, even with a lifetime warranty, when the repair center has its own zip code and Fed-X office!
If I know a firearm has an intrinsic weakness I will evaluate that situation and either accept of reject the firearm based on the trade offs. Yes, anything can break, but some things break more than others. First and foremost I want to know that I can fix the firearm myself without shipping it to the land of Oz so the Wizard (or Mother) can have a look at it.
Now I am going to throw in the shock factor and say that I have owned several Hi-point firearms and I would not hesitate to purchase another. I know their limitations and their uses. I can repair them when it is needed and I know what wear points to keep track of and how many rounds one should expect to get out of each design before a rebuild is necessary.
Even though I might buy one for my own use at the range, to shoot up junk ammo, I would NEVER recommend one as a starter gun for a novice or hand one to a person I care about to use as a life defense tool.
Krat's Hi-point Rules;
1. If you have a failure to eject stop everything and inspect the firing pin. Do not do a malfunction drill and fire the next shot!
2. Never use +P ammunition. I do not care what the MFG says, do not use +P. The parts simply will not endure that pressure over time.
3. Never, never, ever carry a round in the chamber!
4. The last rule is the Ninja Turtle rule; Never pay full retail for a Hi-point.
Knock off at least 1/3 from the list price or go down to the liquor store and hang around out front until some teen ager offers you a Hi-point to buy them a six pack and some cigarettes.

Got a High Point 40, didn't buy it - the daughter did and it was too heavy for her and wanted to trade me for a 9mm Ruger. So I traded her so she would have something she could handle, really didn't want it but she insisted I take it. When I got it, it would jam everytime I tried to fire any hollowpoint ammo. Round nose FMJ worked fine but the hollow points were catching on the face of the feed ramp. So I took it apart and use a dremel to polish the feed ramp down lower and now it works good with anything I put in it.
Ugly gun ? YES
Heavy gun ? YES
Reliable gun ? NO, not from the factory
Would I buy one ? NO
Give me a good Ruger anyday !

Im not sure if I would trust it even as a truck gun... It would take something more reliable than my Sigs to have me switch brands.
Sure, I can buy 5 highpoints for the cost of 1 sig, but Id rather have 1 sig than 5 highpoints!
OP, were not bashing you yourself, but do understand we (those that chose to disagree) simply dont like nor trust the HP brand.

I do not consider the Hi-point as a potential "truck gun".
In my view a "truck gun" should not be considered a "junk gun". My vehicle guns are emergency firearms that need to work properly and without fail when called to duty.
Which I suppose means that I have a much higher opinion of Rossi single shot shotguns, Mosin Nagant rifles and Taurus revolvers than I do of Hi-points.

I have to agree......you might not spend the most money on a "truck gun" and you might loose it to thieves....but to carry something that you don't have complete confidence in is foolish.
When you need it, you need something that will work,...and may not have even been seen for a couple of years.
The "this is expendable, and I don't trust it" is not what I want to carry.

I have a Hi Point .45. It is heavy and big. It has never misfired or jammed. It is accurate and I can shoot +p ammo in it. My son has the .380 Hi Point and has had alot of feeding issues with it. He even sent it in to the factory and it still does the same thing. I think they may have some quality control issues. I think Hi Points use a blowback action which I am told is not a very desirable method, as is possibly unsafe compared to other methods.
I have a High Point .9mm carbine and have no complaints with it.

I do tend to agree with Kyrat. They are made in Ohio and we joke that "there is a reason they're made so close to the great lakes" and "if they could float, they'd never sell one". I find that they are favorable amongst criminals and those in poverty. Kyrat started a "under $350 gun" thread and that would be the place to start. Throw in the used market and options are nearly endless. There is a difference between cheap and inexpensive. I choose the later over the former.

I never shot a carbine but I have shot a couple of there hand guns one day a guy can in with one to sell... One of the guys traded him a scope base for the pistol. Truth be told we all shot the crap outta that gun and it simply worked. I STILL would not own one.

Here there is no other first choice except a Hi-point, and everyone wears Hi-Point goggles. When you click on that link your Hi-Point will look just like a Glock, feel just like a Beretta, be as accurate as a match grade 1911 and the foot long 15 round magazine sticking out the bottom of the grip will be "handy and convenient'.
There will be debate on why the US military does not issue Hi-points with the vast majority on the Hi-Point side. After all, everyone knows all the infantry needs is a few Mosin rifles, a scattering of Hi-Point carbines and a C9 pistol for everyone.
There will also be constant debate on whether the safety on a Hi-point is necessary, or should be used, because the Glock does not have a safety and the Hi-point is just as good so it should not need one either!
In this world pieces of bike tire inner tube are considered custom grips, Wallmart rattle can paint is the ultimate custom finish and orange or white paint becomes the perfect night-sight (color is debatable but the gun it is on is not).
On this forum no one works for Hi-point, but some folks have a "close association" with the plant because they know everyone there by first name and can tell you the when and how of everything and answer any question about when the plant will shift production from carbine to pistol. Oh yes, they can not produce one while producing the other. When carbines are available pistols will not be produced for several months and visa-versa.
Which brings up the production deal, where Hi-Point does not produce it guns. Production is outsourced to another facility in another location (I am suspecting the old Jennings/Raven plant) and only the sales and service is done by Hi-Point.
There is also a survival section, where the Hi-Point in any form or caliber is the perfect survival gun. After all, John Conner carried one in the future during a Terminator movie. Better get one fast though, because the apocalypse is due yesterday and we will be eating the dead bodies by this weekend.
There is a word of warning. Never, never, ever, ever say the Hi-point is not king of firearms. Never ever ask why they do not change or improve, and never ever recommend a firearm other than a Hi-point for any reason or purpose.
They will ban you!

Is this where I should say if you don't own a Rock River Arms Black Gun you ain't @@@@? A High Point is just a tool. If it works, it works. If it doesn't it doesn't. Get another tool. I don't worry nearly as much about my high point in my truck as I would a much more expensive weapon. And when did we start purchasing weapons based on looks? Mine has Tactical in the title. Don't think I have one with "Tactical" right there in the title.
Got a couple with "Military and Police" in the title, but it was the military and police of the 19 Century.
Got a couple with inspection stamps and rack marks to show they worked their way through a couple of world wars and Lord knows how many bush wars.
Got some that are designated by the date they were approved rather than the style of stock.
Got a couple with alphabet soup names I can not pronounce and funny letters I can not read. I tried to pronounce one a while back but my blood pressure shot up and I got dizzy so I had to back off from that effort.
Got a couple that are still working in wars around the world for both our side and the other guys. (You know you bought the right stuff when both sides of a war are using gear just like yours)
But I don't think I have anything with "tactical" right there in the title or stamped on the side of the slide.
I bought a "tactical" scope a while back, does that count? (well Sportsman's Guide said it was tactical, so I am taking their word for it. $19.99 w/free shipping)

I have 3 a highpoint 9mm handgun, a .45 handgun and a sub2000 carbine. Not the prettiest firearms out there but I have zero complaints on mine and I've run quite a bit of ammo through all 3.
