American English Pronunciations - why?

As all of you are aware, that I am alien to USA and English is my second language, although its the main language at work!

I have always wondered, why the difference in certain pronunciations.
Example:

Kansas = pronounced as Can -sus

However how do you pronounce Arkansas properly? I usually hear Arkansas pronounced as Ar-can-sa or Ar -Can - Sar

Now...why isn't Arkansas pronounced as Ar-can-sus as Kansas is pronounced as Can-Sus...the last six letters are the same...why is the pronunciations different?

America is a country peopled by aliens. Everybody's families came from somewhere else. And as immigrants arrived they brought their languages with them. So, European English already was a mixture of (Norman) French and Anglo-Saxon with a large mixture of Latin from the Romans that lived there earlier and the academicians of later years. But just think of how many flags have flown over North American soil: Spanish, Mexican, French, Dutch, English, German, and the slave trade brought us more African languages than most people realize. We've had large influxes of Italian, Irish, and Jewish. And, of course, the "original peoples" were no more original than the Europeans - they just came over much, much earlier (There is some evidence that we had protohumans evolve here - if you go in for that sort of thing. But they seem to have died out). Of course, now, we have representative cultures from around the world who have Americanized and had children here who are, therefore, natural American citizens.

I always thought it was a test to see who was local and who was an outsider......Like a pass word.

Most of the names of places were named either by those who discovered them, mapped them or the name came from indigenous people as Natertot pointed out. If the explorer was French then names were of French origin, Spanish, Portuguese, etc. All named in their native language. THEN you have to add regional dialects into the mix to really mess things up. In one area the term "wash" will be pronounced "warsh" in another area the word "park" will be pronounced "pawk".

Don't feel bad we struggle with it at times as well. I have a terrible time in certain locations in the northeast (yes, Boston, I'm tawkin at ya).

The state of Illinois is probably mispronounced by more English speakers than any other name. It is the French version of an Alonquin Indian word, which means "tribes of superior men" (I have to admit I kinda like that). The s on the end is silent. Or, as we like to say, there is no noise in Illinois.

Well...I hope I do not offend anyone if I say that I love the Southern way...more like its lifestyle, the smile on the faces that I see,,,the cowboy boots, jeans , the big belt buckle, the hat...its simple living and dressed simple to me..,and I love the southern slang.(love hearing people talking that slang but I don't speak it)..maybe that is why I love American Country Music..and my fav actor is Sam Elliot....to me the South is so enchanting...

The words sound more pleasant off a southern girls lips, the food tastes better, the tea is drinkable and the women are prettier.

But that is just me, sitting here 30 miles from "up north" and homesick as all get out.

Just as a side note, when Winnie was over here visiting a couple of years back I had to act as interpreter for her as we traveled Ohio/Indiana and North Kentucky.

They speak Yankee up here. A mix of accents from the Irish, Germans, Poles and every immigrant group that ever invaded the Ohio Valley.

As we traveled south to the campground and left the highway at Corbin Kentucky we stopped at a Subway sandwich shop. On entering the shop I could hear the voices of angels speaking the southern dialect, and suddenly Winnie could understand every word they spoke!

That Hillbilly accent is the original language that came to North America at Jamestown and Plymouth. Shakespeare probably spoke in the same way. It was not until the 1820s that American, Australian, Caribbean and British homeland accents separated.

Right On, man, it is a heavy trip - really groovy. If you are from Malaysia, you are probably well educated in English. Unfortunately, most people in the USA do not speak English, We speak Murrican, Southern, Boston, Berkeley, Valley Girl and everything else except English. My sister, married to a New Zealand man and resident in England for a number of years, now needs an interpreter when she calls home on holidays. :clover::clover::clover:

As school teacher working outside the USA for a number of years, I have often worked with people who think that people from the USA speak the English they are accustomed to. We often spent relaxing time debating whose version of English is correct. :cool:

Because I not teach language arts, I cannot add any more to the comments made, It is best to simply accept the linguistic and regional diversity of our country and to "go with the flow" . Enjoy it and have fun.

I visited USA a couple of years ago, and spent a wonderful few days with Kyr and BTW. I also attended the 4th Annual Jamboree. So far I think I hold the distance record for an attendee. Hurricane Sandy cut my holiday short.
Kyr is quite right. As I got further south, all became clear, except for some ancient waitress in clickety clackety heels at a diner we stopped at with BTW. It didn't help that she was chewing gum at the time. I actually had to ask BTW what she said!

That's funny, Rick! When I went to the UK, a guy came up to me and said something about a f-a-g. A lady within ear shot explained he was only looking for a cigarette. I was relieved!

Even when i moved to the Ohio/Kentucky area from northern Iowa i had some language barriers. In Ohio/Ky, they don't use the word "please" correctly and "corn hole" still doesn't sound like an appealing game.

DD moved to Louisiana about 10 years ago.....she has picked up an real southern drawl/accent, more so than the SIL or most any one around them......LOL

I do get a kick out so some words and terms that are used locally, that take a while to get used to.
Examples, Buggy=Shopping cart,
Wash-a-teria = Laundromat, (actually found a washateria in Racine, WI.......and almost crashed my service truck laughing).
Tump over= tip over, dump over...kinda a tip and dump combined.

Did notice a few when I move down to the city from "up north".....
Shoot it away=Throw away, discard......I was going for my gun....LOL
"Yous"........as in Yous guys, or Yous (meaning all of you you) stop over....Kinda a Kenosha "Y'all"

Working in a factory that had people from everywhere including a lot of foreign countries, I was amazed at how well the understanding levels were.....The fact that it was so noisy, (hearing protection required) really reduced things to basic sign language

I think its interesting and fun to listen to the differences in language and terms.


P.S. What's not interesting and fun is trying to understand customer service people that can't speak anything resembling English or any kind.....My old, slower ears, get frustrated and I ask for some one else. (Sorry for rant)

Being raised in the south, then finding my northern home, I have the best of both linguistic worlds. I still occasionally get asked where I'm from, or teased by my friends for some word pronunciations. So I guess I still have a bit of an accent.

There is a town here named Tok. It is pronounced Toke though and used to drive me crazy. Also, there is a main boulevard in our largest city named Dimond but pronounced as Diamond. I just think that the old gold miners naming stuff up here didn't know how to spell.

Another mixup concerning "the Queens English" occurred when I was teaching overseas and tried to help a New Zealand teacher run errands in town. She needed to finish an errand concerning her "LEETER" but did not want to stop at the bottle shop (for a litre of wine) or the dairy (for a litre of milk) or the service station (for a litre of petrol), It turned out she wanted to go to the postal office to mail a "LETTER" to her family in Christchurch.

I have found people from the Commonwealth to be very nice individuals, but I wish they would learn to speak proper English - like they way us Americans can. I also wish they would drive on the correct (right) side of the road. :)

Candy man is street slang for a drug dealer. Skittles are narcotics in pill form. A rainbow party is when you mix all different kinds of skittle together and you take them randomly with others, no one really knowing what the heck they are taking. Burger sugar is cocaine, called so because you sniff it. Woolah is a hollowed cigar filled with marijuana and crack. Kibbles and Bits are small crumbs of crack. Fairy Dust is PCP.

What he mentioned are all the same thing. But, we had a guy in camp from a site I was a mod and admin at in the early 2000s that would make a fruit punch with various bottles of alcohol mixed in as the day progressed. He poured the high test shine in last at the end of the night. That was your go to bed juice. But, it was called "The Hootch" the whole time.

If you run a regular pot still you will get a low run off and have to run it through a couple times to get it quicker licker. First run equals one X on the jug 60 to 80 proof. Second run through a pot still would get maybe up to 140 proof and that is strong and would normally be blended. You'll get a XX label on that jug in the old days. Three XXX's meant 160 proof or higher. Not going much higher on that with a pot still. You get e reflux still and run some ceramic Raschig rings and put some copper brillo pads in there and you can win the race and get to about 190 proof. After that alcohol draws the water out of the air and dilutes itself so there is no point.

In Florida we make a thin mash that comes out pretty sweet even at real high octane. But, most moonshine is sold just over 60 proof to around 120 proof. Then some folks mix that foo foo sweet flavor stuff like cinnamon or apple pie and what not.

Aye, I have a friend who likes to brew up various brews and liquors and they generally come out pretty tasty. I think I want to try some of the beer brewed with hot peppers. The chocolate beer also sounds good. Back when I did drink - Black Jack was fine for me.

When I did drink (now, I pretty much only taste), we also did the drink all the liquor down and then pour all the leavings into the same bottle to finish it off.

Another thing to confuse you is when you have place names that are the same, but in different locals, and therefore have different pronunciations.

Of course, America isn't unique in this. There is probably more diversity in pronunciation in the UK.

Brits can really do a number on words, aside from the crazy accent. Some of them say "free" instead of "three". Or add an "ER" on the end of words that end in "A". They'll say "Arizoner" instead of Arizona. And sometimes the opposite, saying "stonah" instead of "stoner".

As far as American English, don't even try to apply common sense or phonetics to the spelling and pronunciation of our words. All you can do is learn the common pronunciation and accept it at face value. Don't ask why, because there is no good answer.

Spanish is a very intuitive language. It's based on Latin like the other romance languages, including English. Not sure why we butcher ours so much. And Spanish phonetics are very straightforward and true to their spellings. But despite having all that going for them, they for whatever reason speed their language up and put thick ethnic accents on it making incredibly difficult for non-native speakers to discern the individual words and keep up.

Have you ever seen Word Power Made Easy, by Norman Lewis? In addition to being a great vocabulary builder, it gives a lot of insights into the English language.

Another favorite of mine is How to Speak and Write Correctly by Joseph Devlin (this might be on Gutenberg Project).

Thanks for the references, I will look for the titles. I have been a misfit schoolteacher for a long time but have always taught science courses. As a science teacher, my biggest complaint has been the level of science illiteracy that our country and schools allows to exist. The problem is related to misuse of English but has some special considerations.

For example, I just wrote a letter to a popular author who satirizes politicians and government gobbledygook. While I enjoy his writings, I wrote to clarify that "power" and "energy" are not the same and are measured in different units. Watts is power, but kilowatt-hours on your electric bill is energy. The writer is very well educated, but his liberal arts degree did not teach him basic physics concepts.

I guess you're also ticked at how poor science journalism is now days. It's as if people who report science news know nothing at all about science. They report incorrectly, they jump the gun constantly, they can't critically assess conclusions......

Science has a much more accurate vocabulary than general English. When scientists use words the words they use have very specific meanings.

If you want a lesson in how diverse our national languages are just try teaching adults. We have a lot of ESL folks right here in our country. American born and bred. One of the most challenging and rewarding students I taught was a native Navajo. She was ESL and a brilliantly gifted writer. Add to the mix hearing and voice impaired students and you begin to gain an understanding of how our English changes dramatically from person to person. True of any language or culture of course.

Not all that far from where I live is the Guinea Marshes. Some say these people have been living there since the early 17th century. Many of them still speak in a localized jargon which is barely understood by outsiders. Some linguists claim it is an evolved form of old Elizabethan English. That makes since as the Guinea people have long been isolated from the rest of coastal Virginia. During the American Revolution these people were staunch Tories and after Cornwallis' defeat at nearby Yorktown they took in Hessian mercenaries. Even after the Revolution they for some time refused to use American currency, preferring instead to use the old English guinea. In their isolated way of living there was and in some cases continues to be inbreeding among the Guinea people.
