View Full Version : Keep going or hunker down?

If it became necessary to head out to the wilderness.... would you keep moving around in it, hunker down once you found a good location? Would this choice be affected by if your solo or not? And would what you take with you be packed according to what your intentions were?

Depends on the scenario. For the things that I plan for, leaving the homestead is a temporary consideration. I'm sure there are situations where that may not be the case. What sort of situation did you have in mind?

This check list might help. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?5477-Survival-Scenario-Check-List

If it became necessary to head out to the wilderness....

WW.

Why did it become necessary for me to head out to the wilderness? If you found a good place to hunker down, then, I would assume it is a good place to hunker down in the particular situation you are in. So, I would hunker down.

My gear is going to be dictated by the ecosystem. But, the basics are going to be observed. Shelter, water, fire...

I hunker.....just too old and tried for much moving around.
Not only that....If I have to be out there "because of something I didn't plan".....I'm not gonna be in a good mood.

I really don't plan on leaving, but there are a few things that would make me HAVE to head out. And with those in mind I wonder how I would pack. Light to grab and go ? And to where? Heavy and all bases covered to go to a particular spot to wait it out? I don't think I'd do well in a tent city...but would probably do well meeting like minded folks as a small group to work together to get through the crisis.

Rick, Hunter and me are old. We don't do the 'bug out to the woods" thing!

We've been through fire, flood, hurricane, blizzard, long term power outages and long term marriages.

Nothing has run us out of the house as of yet and TEOTWAWKI doesn't have much of a chance of doing it either!

I too am of "bug in" mentality. There are a few scenarios that will cause me to "bug out" such as being in the path a cat 4 or 5 hurricane, but the woods wouldn't be my first choice. For those that live in remote locations I can see having plans in place for some woods living for something like a wild fire. Depending on the damage caused by an event like that, the stay in the woods could definitely be an extended one. In that sort of scenario I would still be in the hunker down category once I reached my safe location.

If you look at the major calamities that have happened in the last 25 years or so not many folks bugged out to the woods and if they did it was probably for a very short time. Things are generally of a small geographic nature. Even Katrina was a small area when you look at the continental U.S. I have family, friends and commercial lodging available that I would take advantage of well before I'd stay in the woods. Ask yourself this...how much food are you bugging out with? So how long do you really expect to live in the woods? A week's worth of food for a family is a lot of food to be humping on your back.

The only way I am bugging out is if hoards of mass murderin looters are headed my way and I am running low on ammo! Then I will attempt to find a place that gives a good defensive position, and as many resources as possible.
If you know of a place like that now, bury a cache there and make it a plan, it will cut down on the packing!

Hmm. Well, for me I think I would find a good area with lush vegetation, plenty of wildlife like rabbits and deer, a fresh water source that flows down from a mountain, and more than likely I would also try my best to locate an area that has good cover for winter type weather (mountain regions are good for cover, bad for temperature).

Really, there are alot of variables I would need to factor into where I stay. More than likely I would travel around a bit until I found the "right" spot, and I would also have to make sure it was an area that grows crops pretty well during the crop seasons. While I know how to hunt/gather and have some tribal knowledge of my national park areas thanks to working closely with native americans as part of my job, I dont really want to rely on just that type of lifestyle. Farming would be important in my decision of where I would settle down. I guess I kind of answered this question in reverse, but yeah after I have moved around some and found the right area I would hunker down and settle.

However, this is all assuming that the reason that Im having to do this, some end of society situation, hasnt affected the area in some bad way such as radiation. So I suppose it's all really situational (did I already say that? I forget).

Now, lets assume it's zombies that caused the end of modern life as we know it LOL. Yeah yeah I know its all good fiction, but its fun to think about isnt it? IF it WERE the walking dead I think that I would probably move around constantly and live a more scavenger-esque lifestyle, raiding outskirts of once-civilized areas. Settleing down would require a massive fortification, since you never know when a passing hoard is coming your way.

When ever I think of bugging out to the woods I think of a situation along those lines. It could be an army coming after insurgents or insurgents trying to take or defend the area. I do not kid myself that the training I have with my firearms is necessarily greater than any opponent I may encounter and am realistic in the fact that I will most probably be far out gunned.

You can look at any historical situation where insurgent or rioters uprising lead to military or police action and even to all out civil war. It doesn't require your participation with either side to make you a victim of either side. Historically, all over the world, people have been tortured, raped and murdered for just being handy at the time.

Civil war has at least twice broken out in this country itself. Once, resistance of a small band of rebels in Boston and once when the Union forces refused to leave a fort in the Confederate state of North Carolina. Throw in all of the smaller rebellions that didn't result in full on conflict and it is common enough to at least perceive of the possibility of it happening.

it is an extremely unlikely event. But, it has happened. In fact a lot of early American settlers to Florida came down as the threat of war reared its head and eventually erupted in the form of The War of Northern Aggression. Many more fled as Sherman's march to the sea. Men who were caught on their homestead by either side were forced into service. Leaving their family to fend for themselves in a time of lawlessness.

When I respond to a scenario like the one posted. It is unlikely events like these that I am thinking about and not a hurricane or flood or anything like that.

Is it ok to toss out a scenario on this site? I have one worry of one that could effect over half our nation... and its one that's very well possible to make life miserable for a few years for quite a few people including our farmlands. Its one that would make me give up and head out.. broke and homeless. Its one I think on a lot and wonder what to do with this scenario.

Ok. I understand. My scenario is Yellowstone blowing. I'm east and most likely would get a lot of ash fallout. My hunkering down on my own place is jeopardized, both land and livestock and water both for drinking and fishing. And depending on others just down the road is gone along with stores, farmlands ect. I know its possible to pull out from a scenario like this from past eruptions and they've shown that in time its livable again. But during those first few months... I worry about. Do I store bags of dirt to grow in? What will the Sunlight factor be? Will most head out to the Mountain ranges to live? Land here would be pretty much useless wouldn't it?

Given the fact that there have only been 3 eruptions in the past 2.1 million years should alleviate some of your fears. I'm not discounting that it could go tomorrow but the odds are more than in our favor it won't. You're far more like to suffer from a house fire, drought, blizzard, tornado, hurricane or earthquake (depending on where you live). Decide what the most likely events to the least likely events would be for your family and prep accordingly.

If the entire Yellowstone caldera really blows, I'm dead. Too near, nowhere to run. Same probably true if there was a major nuclear attack.

The great likelihood is that we would just sit tight. People might question our priorities, but we would want to stay with our animals.

Our camping/hunting gear is always packed, so if my WW and I had to leave, we would grab that and whatever lightweight food supplies, and go.

Depending on how far I could go. I guess I would hunker down in the Devils Garden Area. An abundance in game and wild edibles. We often have deer in camp. By often I would say 90% of the time they are either in camp or in the extended hammock just behind. Besides deer there are wild pigs, rabbit, alligator, fox and gray squirrel. The other mammals that might make the menu in a tight time would be raccoon, possum, and armadillo.

Fish would include eels, bass, catfish, sunfish, gar and tilapia. There are quite a bit of edible snakes as well as Pig and leopard frogs. 17 species of duck. Plus coots, moorhens and gallinules. All manner of wading birds some like the ibis are considered top table fare (protected) and the anhinga or water turkey. There are lots of Osceola Turkey running around. Also doves and quail. Apple snails are abundant and easy to trap. I guess crawfish should be added even though I haven't ever caught more than a couple at a time in homemade traps. I have caught more with rakes and large shrimp dip nets.

The plants I know in the area are guava, papaya, limes, sour orange, grapefruit, mullberry, live and laurell oaks, slash pine, red bay, cabbage palm, saw palmetto, simpson and white stopper. Beautyberry, blackberry, wild coffee, lots of briars, gallberry, pawpaw, thistles, elderberry, red maple, various ferns, water lettuce, hyancith, pickerel weed, spaderdock and lilies, cattail and sawgrass. Hog plum, poke, spanish needles, sorrels, fig. I think arrow head and alligator flag are edibles also. Then there are edibles. Water is abundantly abundant. But, it is in the everglades region. But, this is higher ground than the eastern everglades.

The live oak hammocks are where early settlers went when hurricanes came. They provide shade and can be about 10 degrees cooler than the outside and even more with a breeze. Material for building short term and long term shelters are abundant. Cordage sources range from ceasar weed or other plant fibers like the cabbage palm dander. To just using the various strong vines or weaker ones corded.

The weather is an average of 82 degrees. With lows in the 30's maybe 3 days out of the year and highs in the low 90's. But, like I said you can mitigate that down to about 82 by staying in the oak hammocks and even lower by playing the breeze and storm winds.

There are a ton more edibles and useful plants. Like I didn't include black bear because I am not going to hunt that.

I believe it would depend on the type/size/duration of eruption and the amount of ash deposited. Areas can be buried under ash (think Pompeii in 79 A.D.) or severe damage can be isolated to an area (think Mt St Helens).

If it is severe enough to reclaim the land, I think that carrying long term storage food items might be more prudent than bags of dirt. While being able to grow and raise food after an event like that is important, for the near future having the food on hand is a matter of survival to get to the point to be able to grow food and raise livestock.

Nope, because most of the people that understand that land are in the surrounding region. I have never met another human being that saw all of the potential in that place. They hunt and drag home the game to store in their freezers. Besides just the public land is over 65,000 acres. Between Dinner Island, the OK slough, and Spirit of the Wild. Most of the land around that is the same though and those folks are large land owners and lease holders who would like the comfort of someone who knows the land and firearms.

There is 4 million acres of land that is public in south Florida and has only a couple of roads through it. Most people have always counted it as uninhabitable. There are a couple of more million privately held acres.

I would look for the safest place with enough natural protection, water and possible food area..then hunker down. That is the great thing when you are living in a Equatorial Climate with rain forest. My most possible place would be somewhere near a stream where I can fish, have water and the rocks as natural protection. The place should have 3 or 4 chunks of big rocks near each other, so that I can build simple walls from either bamboo or wood to fill in the gaps between the rocks (boulders?). I would reinforce the top part with bamboos too so that wild animals such as Tigers will not be able to get to me. Of course, my nights would be above the ground so as to avoid from poisonous insects and snakes (we have all sorts of vipers and cobras here). My refuge area should be about 50 to 100 meters from the flowing water, on higher ground (avoiding getting washed away in flash floods).

Ok.. Now I'm going to pick some of this apart. :)

For those of you who are going to head out to find a good spot to 'watch the show'. What if you got to see an awesome show....but your still alive after the eruption. (yes I'm going to stick with Yellowstone blow). Now your alive but your homeplace is rumored to be under a lot of ash. Not much news is coming out of that area. Will you try to head back home? Your vehicle will be worthless somewhere along the line because of the fine ash. From there on your going to have to rely on your bushcrafting skills. I'm going to assume the first week animals will be edible...if not killed by ash dust. And then the water source... I'm going to assume only the fresh out of the ground springs will be safe to drink? And think on how busy THAT spring would be in just a few days. Unless this catastrophe happens in the dead of winter.. the ice on lakes would be usable and the water source under it be somewhat safe for awhile. And your from a 'down south' state... would you try to head north to the possibilities of clean water?

WW.

Rick
06-12-2014, 05:49 PM
The thing is ash dust will do people in just as readily as animals. There are so many variables in this scenario. How much for how long and how far. Once the ash makes the ionosphere and circles the globe then those questions become incredibly important. Mankind has survived these kinds of massive volcanic events before and we'll do it again I guess.

Winter

When I looked into this years ago, I came to some general rules and concepts.

Yellowstone does not have to be ultra plinian. It can be a much smaller eruption. The geysers and what not that are all over Yellowstone keep it in check.

Lets say it goes off plinian (Mt St Helens) or ultra plinian (Krakatoa). First thing for you to do is head north or south to avoid the ash plume. Next, head west.

Perhaps the best destination is the Pacific NW just east of the Cascades. Why? The cascades are very rainy and the rain will take ash out of the air. Once the ash density of the air is lowered, the air will have to re-saturate itself with ash. That makes just east of the ridge of the Cascades into possibly the best air quality to be found in the Northern Hemisphere.

Long term canned goods are your best bet, as someone already mentioned.

You will need to protect your whole body from the ash. Think painters suit, goggles, a bunch of N95 masks, and bandanas to cover your head and to cover your masks as a prefilter and mask lifespan improvement.

The woods would perhaps be the worst place to be. Inside a large building with a filtering airlock type entrance is best. Enclosed spaces would be bad.

Besides having a means to move to S. America or a multimillion $ bunker, the above advice is the best I could come up with.

Tokwan

Hey Rick, its not really that bad, the vipers, cobras and tigers are quite docile..u can actually pat them on the head...hahahaha, anyway...the jungles here are not like in the US or Europe...the vegetation is quite dense and stretches across some neighboring countries like Thailand.

If I lived "back East," and indulged in "end of the world" scenarios, I'd be far more concerned about the eventual New Madrid earthquake occurring as it did in 1811/12. One of these days, the New Madrid is going to "pop" again, and when it does, the devastation to a large portion of the country in the surrounding area will be horrendous, both physically and economically. It is not a matter of "if," it is merely a matter of "when." Kinda like the San Andreas Fault in California.

Of course, I don't live either "back East," nor in California anymore, so .... What, me worry? :tabletalk:

WW.

It would definitely depend on the scenario. Assuming there wasn't a particular reason to keep moving, I'd tend to hunker down in the best location I could find. That would likely be a spot favorable for weather, wind protected, sunny in winter, shady in summer, good hunting and foraging, etc. The less I moved the more I could improve my living conditions. That said, in the real world most pre-agricultural peoples would have to move periodically to avoid outstripping local resources.
