Hello, What do you think about carry a minimalist survival kit, like only a canteen, a firestarter and a knife?

I think that is a good start....but what does that have to do with " Bear Grylls style question"?............ He carries a production crew and hotel reservations, or used to...that ship has sailed a couple of years ago.

I would be more interested in what you think and carry, as a real person.

Yeah i was thinking in BG, cause he tried to promote that kind of gear.

But yes my sensation is: which is the minimal gear you would carry in a survival kit?

What some one carries will be vastly different from area to area, and what you care to carry.

Pupa - If you want to try minimalist camping, but aren't sure - try this.

Make up your minimalist list of stuff that you want to bring, but then bring the other things you normally bring camping. Don't use those "other" things unless you are in a situation that could be dangerous without them. This will do a couple of things. It will either tell you that you need more, or it will build your confidence int the ability to survive with very little.

I have no problem with BG working with Gerber to make knifes, kits, bags and what not. He has every right to make as good a living as he can, and the products they put out are not bad at all. Fine by me.

Minimal gear.. I would say, as much as possible. It's not a contest, where whoever brings the least amount of gear wins. Take what you need, to not only survive but to survive well. There are always people on boards like this, that are what I call "purists". People who "have no need" for a tent, tarp, sleeping bag, matches or a lighter or other kind of gear or even food in their kit. People who think that bringing a knife sharpening tool is a waste of space, time and money and would prefer finding a rock for the job and would prefer rubbing two sticks together to make fire, than just lighting it with a lighter, and would rather look for berries and try to trap a squirrel than bring some "normal food" with them. To each his own I guess, but rather than trying to make it out there with a piece of string, a rubber band and Leatherman, I'll fill my backpack with all kinds of great tasting food and modern gear that I know works, will keep my safe, dry and warm.
I'll bring a lighter, and matches, and a fire steel.. If they fail, I'll still be able to make a fire, but I would rather light my fire with a lighter, then waste my time "rubbing sticks together". Especially if your efforts to trap a squirrel fail and you could only find a metephorical handful of berries, you'll need to not waste your energy on simple things.

It all boils down to what is right for you. And I've found that what is right for me changes all the time. What I got by with when I was 16 was much different when I was 30 and is completely different now that I'm older. In addition, it changes for you from location to location. My wife and I are planning a couple of weeks in Yellowstone this fall and I'm adding things to my list I normally wouldn't have with me because my environment will be much different than what I'm accustomed to. So if you bring very little or bring a lot it's okay as long as what you have works well for you.

My advice is: don't follow the advice of TV sensationalism survival gurus like BG ! Now with that out of the way, good water filters and water purification tablets are easy to get even at your local Walmart, so you don't need to resort to drinking piss. So I would suggest a means to carry water such as a good canteen or water bottle, a means (and knowledge) to start fires such a a butane lighter, a firesteel, and tinder (vaseline soaked cotton balls). A good knife that will help you build fires and shelter and do other needed camp chores and a means to sharpen the knife in the field. Add to that a good trail tarp, paracord, a small fishing kit, snare wire, and I always find that a frog gig head is handly too for gathering small game and fish in a survival situation and something to cook the critters in such as a 1 pound coffee can. The coffee can is also handy to boil water in to kill any nasties that might be present. And last but not least, make sure you have a well stocked first aid kit along with any needed prescription meds needed and a good flashlight.

Does Chile have Walmart......?

I'm thinking these questions are being asked by some one that has seen BG products and might not have a lot of local options?

Anyway as a prepackaged product, the BG line will be a start, as it is a all inclusive basic kit....
The best, maybe not........ but a start.

mmm Wallamart is in Chile like "Lider" as a name, but there are other stores where i can get some survival stuff and sometimes i buy online.

When i go to the Andes mountains (summer, 2 days, 1 night) i try to carry the minimal ammount of gear and its based in:

- Knife (Aitor Crow, a spanish survival knife).
- Canteen with cup.
- SOL survival blanket.
- Doans magnesium firestarter.
- Bic lighter.
- Small fishing and sewing kit.
- Small medical kit.
- Keyring led.
- Paracord.
- Food.
- Light My Fire spork.
- Sometimes i carry a slingshot.
- My backpack is a Black Diamond BBee, sometimes i use a Doite Garuda fanny pack.

One scouting/backpacking manual I read a long time ago said to look at your gear after a trip and divide into three piles: 1. items you used constantly 2. items you used occasionally 3. items you never used.
The first pile (constant use) is what is needed. That advice from a manual still seems good. :clover:

When deciding on the contents of a "survival" kit for a wilderness setting I like to visualize a tree with 3 main branches that you can label "Fire", "Water", and "Shelter". These are accepted generally as the basic needs to prolong life for more than several days. The Fire branch can start with a Bic lighter. But then it will continue on to smaller branches. Perhaps water-and-wind proof matches or a mag bar and striker. Then you could add pre-made tinder. The Water branch at the simplest is a canteen or drinking bottle of clean water. Then you want a purification method (heat or chemical) to get more safe water. And you can continue to a purification straw or pump so that you do not have to wait for a drink. Shelter probably starts with a knife or other sharp tool to cut branches and some cordage to hold your structure together. As has been pointed out a poncho or just waterproof sheeting will improve the rain and wind protection. And you can go on further on each branch.

Then there's the "Ten Essentials" every backpacker and day hiker takes with them. Remember your FOUR survival basics: Food, Water, Fire, and Shelter. WSF member and survival instructor and author of "Build the Perfect Survival Kit;" John McCann shows one made that fits in an altoids tin. He keeps going biger and bigger, but that's where he starts. It's all up to you. Myself I believe in redundancies....:cool2:

I watched that episode with Michelle Rodriguez (from Fast and Furious) she did very well and put up with B Gryll's foolishness. He makes some good points but then does some completely stupid, foolish or down right unnecessarily dangerous things. Sure boiling the mouse instead of roasting it is best but using Michelle's body fluids, really? Even B.G. admitted it was one of the worst things he had ever eaten. If you gag and vomit it would be worse not to mention all the toxins your body was trying to get rid off including salts than now it must work to get rid of again. Hello! obviously just a gimmick for ratings.

One of my biggest complaints about his childish foolishness is when he rappels off the sides of rocky mountains (falling rocks dislodged by ropes etc.) and from helicopters without a helmet. Then Michelle had a helmet from when she went sky diving and later when she rappelled no longer had it. What the heck!?

Similar with Kate Hudson and she grew up sking and knows better on black diamond slopes etc., a friend talked to her and brother on the slope years ago, they were cool kids. Some day this fool will do a Steve Irwin mark my words, I just hope it is him and not one of his guest adventurers. I do feel sorry for his kids and wife but that is exactly why he should not be such a bad example to them and those of us who foolishly watch his childish nonsense. Palm to face. I need to spend my time listening to some inspiring speeches by a brilliant real estate developer who has ALL the answers to our countries problems and is just about to release the details ... waiting waiting waiting... ha ha ha

Another thing that showed that BG was more concerned about ratings than demonstrating good survival skills was that a meal with no water is counter productive. If they lacked water to boil the rodent it was pointless to eat it at all especially on the first night. Digesting food requires water and if you attempt it without water not urine it will only dehydrate your body further. Then the next day their bodies were under more stress, headaches and muscle cramps and less abilty to focus. Therefore a higher chance of injury. So if my analysis is correct you can learn from BG's NBC TV shows, what NOT to do. He mixes some good advice with some very bad, so the viewer just needs common sense to filter it out. If BG had not struck his head on rocks while rappelling down mountains without a helmet he would probably know the difference and not put on such a BS BG show.

I quit watching BG when the show aired that showed him doing rolling flips down the mountains in Alaska. He also went through the glacier cave that show too.. He may show some good skills but one must have the knowledge to weed through the bs..

That's great advice! Try camping out for the night and assess what you really need then. It will give you a greater idea of your individual needs dependent upon your age and location.

mouse boiled in her own urine...
wow.

so far as necessities, it changes with the season too... in the santa fe swamp in florida, you can just about light the whole swamp up in a day, when its dry. when its wet though, good luck. there isnt much need to bring cordage at any time though, as long as you know what yuca looks like and know how to use it. i can hang my whole body weight by one leaf(course, im light), and the stuff is everywhere down there.

i would definitely bring some medical supplies though. that swamp is so full of sharp bog wood that your just about bound to poke yourself on something at some point, and while bandages are not too difficult to fabricate, infections suck.

I wholeheartedly agree with all your assessments of Bear G's show. There are a couple of other shows out there that I fear will eventually get someone killed. I wouldn't have as much displeasure with BG if he renamed the show and made it something along the lines of "an adventure challenge" - but the inaccurate depiction of "survival" skills contrary to any recognized logical standard is a misleading farce. Next he'll be telling people to eat toothpaste (I'm sure you know what I mean, but if not read the label). Unfortunately sometimes people survive in spite of doing stupid things and then others give credit where it isn't due - they survived alright... in spite of what they did, not because of it. Regarding what to take - I prefer the concept of learning to survive (and teaching others) where you are suddenly dropped in the middle of nowhere with nothing but your pocket knife. More preparation than that feels like "camping" to me. But if you know you're going to be out somewhere where you could become stranded, I like the many small lightweight commercial kits that are available - especially the ones in the handle of a walking stick.

Back to just a minimum kit that you can keep tied to your person somewhere such as your belt, chest harness or ankle/boot. Put "dry" and steril items in a proper roll top dry bag NOT ziplock. Put everything in a sturdy canvas, nylon or leather pouch.
Bare minimum First aid kit might be gauze roll, medical tape, iodine for antiseptic and backup emergency water purification, also small tube of antibiotic ointment. Packets are a waste in my opinion but I do buy them in bulk for other reasons.
Small firestarter kit, remember that gauze and PJ in ointment is good tinder as last resort.
Small backup blade and LED light, mylar space blanket.
Perhaps a few other things but all that plus cord incorporated into it or your footware should not be huge and uncomfortable attached to your body NOT buried deep in your backpack which can get separated from you in a crisis.

I have two different models of Sea-to-Summit dry bags that is the smallest they make with belt loops which easily hold all these items and still leave space on my waist for a large knife. IMO better to put sidearm if that is appropriate behind waist, or on chest holster, or in backpack or someplace other than side of belt anyway.

"IMO better to put sidearm if that is appropriate behind waist, or on chest holster, or in backpack or someplace other than side of belt anyway."

If a sidearm is appropriate. It goes where you can most easily access it. Otherwise it is not truly needed. past 3 o'clock it becomes more difficult and when you move to small of back it can be impossible if you are grounded. In your backpack?

Probably safest not to carry a loaded firearm. If you need it, just slip off your pack (you'll have plenty of time or call time out) and just show the the gun to the bad guy, bear or if for hunting game the deer and they will give up. Bears can't tell the firearm is unloaded anyway. OMG!!!

Batch you may be going a little off topic. My only point was that if a quick response emergency/survival kit is very small and mimimalist it does not need to get in the way of a quick and easy acces to a firearm. Many LEO and active millitary carry this and much more on thier waist belt or person in easy access mode. In some cases concealed is appropriate. Many millitary carry fully size 1911 .45 caliber in a very fast access chest holster, even if they are pinned at the waist it is still accessible. But that was NOT my point or the topic of this thread. If this confuses anyone they should talk in person to a first responder or a well trained millitary person because simple text is very limited, obviously.

Wow, from canteen, fire starter, and knife to combat gear up....?
That quite a jump.

I do think the OP had moved on since May of 2014

There are some "sticky" and other threads here and on other forums that are many years old and the OP is no longer even an active member of the forum. So that is irrelevant.

Personally I consider water container/canteen, knife, fire starter, FAK, poncho/tarp far more important than a firearm. Was making point that it doesn't need to interfere with one.
My slightly larger, not bare minimum First Aid Kit also has about 3 feet of surgical tubing which is no longer highly recommended as a tourniquet but can be used to make various simple small game weapons and or attach to small inline filter as a crude "life straw" to get water out of hard to reach places, and over a dozen other uses. Impovise is key to survival, lightweight backpacking, small kayak camping, and a requirement of all special forces regardless of country: USA, CANADA, UK or wherever.
