Where did you here that? I only recall a knife amnesty when the law changed and as far as I know it didn't include Utility knives.

Instead of illegalizing anything and everything that could possibly be used to commit murder, why not just make murder illegal? I mean, who cares who owns what as long as they aren't hurting anyone? If murder was illegal and had the possibility of life in prison or execution, then no one would ever murder because it would be illegal.
Wait. You mean murder is illegal? And it is a felony? And people still do it? Hmmmm. So, if they don't care about all that, then why would that care about a little 'ol misdemeanor?

As for my statement before, it was a long time ago, at least a decade. There was a pretty bad murder using a box cutter. I don't think it was in London. The media immediately began talking about a ban, but it never actually happened at the time. But there were many citizens who dutifully took their box cutters to the police just because of the media reports.
I've been trying to find a reference, but it's really hard for something so far back using a dial-up connection. Too much recent stuff being repeated on every website you can imagine, plus references to 911 and a group called boxcutter. It really clogs things up.

My search skills are weak, so I was unable to find a source. But a while back when a maniac with a knife raided a school, Chinese officials used it as an opportunity to criticize the US on our lack of gun control laws ... because, you know, like ... knife attacks wouldn't happen when guns are banned.
I'm waiting for something similar with this.

As I said before when we were ploughing this same ol' tired field, I can outrun a knife but not a bullet. Do with it what you want.

Can you really outrun a knife, B? What if the person can run faster than you? Has you cornered? Sneaks up on you? Goes after a family member, particularly your kids? My son is three, if someone goes after him with a knife (or any other means of force) I have the right to do what ever I deem necessary to neutralize the threat. Also, the problem has been solved. It is just that a certain side of the aisle won't admit it because doing so would mean they are wrong. Just keep your head in the utopian sand......

What if, ANYthing, fill in the blank... We can play this, and have, til the cows come home, and guess what? We haven't reached a consensus, haven't solved it. Let's ban guns, let's ban knives, let's ban cars, hell, let's ban idiots, while we're at, since that's probably at the core of it all.

A ban on knives. I'd like to see that! ('not' just in case your didn't get the sarcasm)
That would be the most impractical idea. No food preparation, no crafts, no building work, no surgical procedures, not much of anything really (try going one day without using a knife of any kind).
A ban on knives would be a ban that removes the single most important tool in the history of man. Anything can be used as a weapon, will it be a ban on pens/pencils and tent pegs next!

It's tempting for both sides to use this as "ammo" in the debate on weapons, but it's hard to overgeneralize. At best China is a pretty repressive regime and they lack a long-standing tradition of personal freedoms that much of the rest of the world enjoys. To me it's plain that focusing on objects and tools while failing to address the root causes of behavior is doomed to fail no matter where that approach is tried.
I feel bad for the folks affected. Last count there's something like 29 dead and 130 wounded! That's pretty horrible by any standards.

1) Too many people packed in a small space for too long. Every population (even animals) will self-regulate. Groups split (wolves, lions, bees, ants, etc). If they don't, the population will be controlled by other means.
2) We are not allowed to be predators. Society doesn't like the idea. They say we're just animals but then say we're supposed to be above that. Our predatory instinct will express itself one way or another.

As predators we need to hunt, fish, and trap. That's the way of a predator. Most people don't do that so the predatory instinct comes out in other ways. The more society resists the predatory instinct the more incidents like this will happen. The fact we are packed into small areas makes it easier.

Yeah, I tend to agree with Canid. I think you termed it pretty well too. It's getting harder to tell the ugly kind of broken from the rest of us broken. Now with blue tooth headsets everyone appears to be talking to themselves.
