Reason to support conceal carry

Had an experience a month ago you may find interesting. I was at an RV resort in Homosassa Florida. Been going there for 6 years. A few weeks ago the RV resort was having music program at the club house. Probably 80% of the campers were attending the program. Half way through the program I told my wife I was going back to our motorhome to take a shower and cleanup before the "Klondike" movie started. Walked back to our RV and notice the dome light was on inside our Ford Focus.
Closer look I could see the drivers door wide open as well. Walked back to close the door and here was a kid about 20 going through my car. Kid must have wet his pants when he saw me come around the corner of my RV.

A few weeks prior to all this I took my conceal carry permit training course. Submitted the application to the state of Illinois
on Jan 5, 2014. I confronted the thief and was thinking about what I learned in the conceal carry training course. The little thief
did not know I had a gun hidden inside my Ford Focus about 2 feet away. I kept asking myself if I should get the gun out. I calmly asked the kid "What is going on here". The kid replied he was inside my care by mistake. The kid did not seem hostile or aggressive so I decided to leave the gun inside the car. I asked the kid a few more questions, his replies were all a bunch of lies.
Finally told the kid to get out of here.

I called 911 and 3 county police cars surrounded my RV within about 5 minutes. I told the police my story and gave them a description of the would be thief. What I did not know is the police knew who the kid was and where he was so 2 of the cops left.
The remaining cop remained with me and chewed me out for leaving my car unlocked with valuables like my GPS inside. I told the cop lights were ON inside my RV and the kid could not have known my RV was unoccupied. Cop told me thieves don't care.
The cops never did find my hidden gun. In Florida anyone can have a loaded gun inside a case or holster and inside the arm rest or dash compartment so I was legal either way. My gun was unloaded actually but the clip was there and loaded.

The next day I learned the kid was living in the same RV resort with 3 other dirt bag boys. Cops did background checks on them
and the police escorted them out of the park at noon the next day.

My wife & I didn't sleep much that night. Our car was parked 8 feet from where we sleep inside the RV. The next day I began thinking, "what if this kid had a knife or a gun"? Maybe it did. He could have killed me and left no witnesses. Even worse, what if my wife had been with me? Never dreamed anything like this would happen inside an RV resort, a few feet from my RV. Now I'm in the process of applying for a Florida conceal carry permit.

That is going to do you no good at all if you don't carry your handgun ON your person. A handgun hidden away somewhere in a vehicle and unloaded is absolutely useless in a down and dirty real life situation where the criminal intends to hurt or kill you and/or your family.

Those are my comments. Glad the young thug didn't hurt you, but next time you might not be so lucky.

I owned the Ford Focus for about a year before I found a secret compartment below the headlight switch. I think it is intended for CD disk storage but is of perfect size for a pocket pistol. The compartment door looks like a cover for the fuse block. So now you guys know about the compartment. Yes, I was lucky the thief didn't find the gun.

Illinois launched conceal carry permit applications on Jan 5, 2014. It will be about a month or two before I receive my permit. Illinois didn't want
conceal carry in the first place. Supreme court forced Illinois into passing a conceal carry law. As a result Illinois has a bunch of special rules
about where conceal carry is not allowed. My nephew told me about the conceal course held locally and the main reason I even took the class.
I told the guy teaching the class that I was not going to carry no dam gun around. My goal was to have a handgun available in the car. All that changed when in Florida. I emailed my nephew and my conceal carry instructor about my episode in Florida.

I had a wake up call with my personal safety. I'm working on my Florida conceal carry permit right now. The best part is I'm buying myself

Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm surprised the cops didn't ask me if I was carrying a gun at the time.

I contacted a conceal carry instructor & retired cop in Florida and asked him if detaining the kid at gun point would have been acceptable. He said, "personally and professionally I would not have been a problem with it but what I did worked out perfect".

As for my wife carrying a gun. Not a good idea. Not worried about her using the gun on me. Just no interest.

If you're buying a new gun for concealed carry, it is absolutely imperative that you also buy a good concealment holster that is made to fit that handgun and model. Also, you should at the same time buy a good sturdy belt made for that holster. Don't buy some cheap nylon piece of crap, or just some old generic leather holster that "kinda" fits. There are plenty of good holster smiths out there who can fix you up. Flimsy leather belts will let your firearm droop down to your knees.

I strongly suggest you buy a couple of extra magazines as they will come in handy when you are practicing. I'm a very strong believer in carrying an extra magazine when carrying my semi-auto pistol. The magazine is the weak link in a semi-auto pistol and sometimes, things just go wrong. With an extra magazine, you're covered if your first magazine malfunctions. A magazine pouch matching the holster and belt should carry you through a down-'n'-dirty situation.

Just remember that once you pull a weapon you've taken the incident to the next level. If the kid was armed he might have been inclined to pull his out of fear, which could have resulted in a far different outcome. I'm not saying it's a wrong move. Each of us has to weigh the situation at the time. I'm just saying it has to be a consideration when confronting an "unarmed" person. To me, that's why avoidance is the best prevention. In this case, locking the vehicle would probably have precluded the kid even being in the vehicle. But hind sight is always 20/20. I'm glad it worked out as it did.

You have to take each scenario on a case by case basis and laws vary state by state. You said that he wasn't aggressive, so you didn't do it. Good choice for a few reasons. 1) It is not your job to "teach the kid a lesson". That would be a good way to get legally screwed. 2) You should only use deadly force for self defense and the defense of others and should only be used when all lesser means have failed or cannot be reasonably deployed. You saw a situation that did not require deadly force and to pull a gun in a non-deadly force situation will also get you legally screwed.

My advice to you is don't take legal advice from cops and instructors. Take legal advice from your lawyer, they are the one's that will be keeping you out of jail should a situation go south. The other thing you need to change is the location of your gun. It should be ON you.

This episode was a huge wake up call for myself, my wife and the rest of my friends and family. I have lived a rather sheltered life from crime living in rural America. This week I applied for a Florida conceal carry permit, purchased a new gun for this purpose. Already applied for the Illinois conceal carry permit and still waiting after 60 days, probably wait another 60 days.

Recently constructed a lockable gun locker for my car or truck when in areas where conceal carry is not allowed, government property and most of Chicago.

Reading and watching all the information I can find on this conceal carry topic.

Lockable or not, in some states/cities you still can't have it in your vehicle unless transporting it to/from a shooting range. Often you also must store gun and ammo separately. Be careful when traveling, watch out for both criminals and cops.

Two comments -

Moved the FL panhandle about 5 years after the state passed concealed carry in 1987 or so. As I recall, the crime rate dropped dramatically.

Second is the concealed weapon ban and other limitations on military reservations. Having just retired from a job on base, I can carry except on the occasion I have to go on base. Absurdity? How do you think the Fort Hood terrorist incident (yep, I said it) would have progressed? Before you start on collateral damage, would it have been more or less?

Illinois has not yet issued conceal carry permits. I have applied and still waiting. They told us in class that conceal carry is not permitted on government property which includes Parks, schools, colleges and even the Post Office and most of Chicago. Not surprised a military base is also included.

I constructed a steel gun locker to keep weapons inside for places conceal carry is not allowed. Not much sense taking a weapon into Chicago. But I'm never in Chicago at night.

Jim, they have started mailing them out. I think the first 5000 went out late February. They still had 40,000 pending and expect 400,000 applications this year. If you've finished your class and passed the background you should be receiving it shortly. My cousin hasn't received his either.

New to this forum so I hope you-all don't mind. First, your life MUST be in imminent danger of death or serious bodily harm before you deploy deadly force. Which means pulling the gun from its concealed position. Each individual must make this decision but you must also be able to demonstrate to the police that your actions were justified. Otherwise you will be arrested and face criminal charges. Just to keep things clear, I believe every law abiding adult has the right to keep and bare arms, but we must use sound judgement when carrying. Secondly, if buying a gun for the protection of my self and love ones, buy a good one, I wouldn't trust a bursa as a shoe horn, no offence, but try looking at ruger, springfield, glock, colt, smith & wesson for just a little more money. I mean no offence, just trying to help.

It depends on the state law as to when you can and can't use deadly force. It doesn't have to be just "your life" that is in danger. Know you state's law on self defense.

In my state, if you are stopped by the police and you are carrying, the very first thing you do is notify them you are armed and licensed to do so. Failure to do so means losing the concealed carry permit. They also do state and federal background checks when you buy a gun in my state so the police and FBI would already know, don't you think?

It just depends on whether you want to be a criminal or not. Do you think the FBI or local police have the time, resources or even the desire to round up every card carrying person? Have you ever been fingerprinted? Have you even had a DNA sample taken? Have you ever purchased a weapon legally? They already know who you are.

In OH, we are required to notify only when we are carrying. Most gun owners, including myself, are against it. It is an additional thing law abiding citizens must do, but criminals do not. It is a violation of the 1st amendment (free speech), the 2nd amendment (all gun laws violate this), 5th amendment (self incrimination), and Miranda rights (remaining silent). From a common sense perspective, why should anyone by law have to notify the police of a lawful activity? What's next that I'll have to inform them?

"Excuse me, officer, but I am legally carrying, I made coffee this morning and by the way, I'm going commando right now."

As far as being on an "Owns A Gun" list, I don't worry about it. If there are "lists" of same, then I've been on everyone of them for years.

Hypothetically and "just supposin'" (I've done this before. :lol:), supposin' comes the day when the Far Left has finally achieved its ultimate goal, the complete destruction of the Second Amendment... and the rest of the U.S. Constitution. Big Brother and Big Nanny issue an Imperial Order for all gun owners to turn in their guns or Big Brother will come get them.

"Aha!," you say, " I bought my pistol from a private party years ago and Big Brother doesn't know I have it. I've foxed Him out for sure! Har har har."

Okay, so you still have it, but you can't go shoot it, you can't have it repaired if necessary, you can't buy ammo for it, you certainly can't let anyone know you have it as there will be paid "gun finder" informants everywhere, and perchance you did use it in a self defense shooting, you'd be thrown in the Slam forever by Big Brother and Big Nanny.

Therefore why worry about "lists?" Worry more about working to defeat legislators who are striving constantly to destroy our Rights, and direct your efforts into something productive.

I was very hesitant about a carry permit, In Kolorado if you buy a weapon they are supposed to destroy that record within 72 hrs supposedly. I figured a permit stayed on file all the time, And this was not a good idea. My buddy lives in MO he said not to worry then the State of MO gave the feds every CCW, Name and address, To me this is a problem. I left Illinois in 83 because of their gun laws, Now Kolorado is doing there best to destroy the 2nd amendment. Kolorado is a open carry State, I open carry a lot, I can conceal carry in my vehicle or motorcycle, The 2nd amendment should be all you need, it says nothing about permits or permission to carry to me this is the law we should be pushing for. As far as pulling you weapon I would never pull it without pulling the trigger. To pull it and hold someone is a dangerous situation and could go really wrong. The only time they should know you have a weapon is after they are on the way to hell.

In the Illinois conceal carry class they told us there was no need to reveal any conceal carry information unless a police officer asked for it. I think a police officer that valued their life assumes anyone could be carrying.

Still waiting for my Illinois permit. Still waiting for my Florida permit.

As for my Bersa Thunder 380. I think any weapon used for self defense should be tested monthly for reliability. I also think different brands of
ammunition needs to be tested to verify reliability. With the hand guns I have, unreliable ammunition is a known issue. If the Bersa is found to be unreliable it will be replaced with something that is. However, I figure my conceal carry weapon is going to have a rough life spending days and nights inside the car or truck. Carried around and eventually dropped. I would hate to have a collector type handgun and treat it like that so I bought the Bersa. Wait and see how it works out. Jim

I took my ccdw course yesterday. If I get the rest of the requirements done right away, I could have my permit in 1-2 months.

Illinois requires a "Firearm owners identification Card" to be in possession of guns or ammo and to purchase guns or ammo so the state already knows who can legally have guns. Conceal carry permits doesn't tell them much they didn't already know. I don't mind the gun card requirement if it makes the anti gun folks and the politicians happy. But the gun card does nothing to keep guns out of the wrong hands. When gun crimes are committed the news media never mentions whether or not the person had a gun card. So without the card, any offense should actually be the second crime committed not the first. They never mention that.

Illinois pretty much has an anti-gun culture, another good reason not to live here. Little old ladies call into the talk radio programs and complain conceal carry makes it easier for criminals to obtain guns. That's how out of touch people are here.

Received my conceal carry permit last week. Nothing from Florida yet. Yes I did, got that one yesterday.
