I thought you guys might be interested in hearing some of my stories, so I will copy-paste a thread I had posted on a hitch-hikers' forum (the quote starts right after this colon):

It was my third year hitch-hiking for months on end, and the first time I decided to check out the US. I bought a map when I crossed the border and decided to circle all the places I would get dropped at.

That sign didn't work as intended. I think people were reading "HOMELESS CANADIAN" instead of "harmless", and were thus scared away, haha. Nonetheless a nice try, I guess.

Doing some "planning" while waiting for Yosemite National Park to open. Ah, a good breakfast! Always a nice treat. I ended up deciding to go check out Mono Lake while waiting, so I hitched along that highway as I was ready to hike the 4 km to the lake. A guy picks me up in a minute, and is nearly disappointed I'm only going that far. He ends up dropping me right at the entrance of the trail I wanted to do, and we talked for a good hour while sharing herbs.

The next morning after that fire, I met another climber. We partnered up and did some bouldering, then hiked, and then he drove me to another trail I proposed him. The trail was actually closed due to fire and being supposedly dangerous. Oh well, obviously, we went in! Big trees there were, as expected.

That guy drove me out of Yosemite as well, toward Death Valley. He dropped me near a spot where he knew if I'd look around I'd find a Hot Springs run-off which I could dip in for free. He left me out there in pitch dark, and then after walking around for a few minutes, I hear some people talking. I walk up to the source, and arrive next to a pool of water. I introduce myself as "a Canadian hitch-hiker just wanting to have a bath", and they invite me to join their group. Once again, awesome people and free beers! The next morning, I went back to the run-off to take an actual bath. The spot is fairly known to locals, so a few people walked up to me as I was naked. Haha, I kind of scared them off I guess, which was great: a whole damn pool just to myself simply because people are too prude. Hourray!

As I was dropped in Death Valley National Park in the dark, I heard people playing guitar and singing in the campground. After hesitating for a little while, I walked up to their fire and asked if I could join in. They gladly offered me their free chair and some beers. I got to play the guy's guitar (a favor he did to only one other person in his whole life-time). I stuck around for 2 days and they drove me around to their spots they were going to visit. Absolutely a blast! Thanks guys!

Enough pictures. Story time!

4th crossing of Canada:
"Took 9 days.

Cost me a total of less than 15$, excluding the deductions of donations (food, motel, etc.), because else, it'd definitely be a positive budget. I paid for like one local bus in Winnipeg, and bought a 12-inch at subway, and 2 junior burgers at McD's, and that's it!

I left Vancouver Island on Halloween and reached Pemberton by the night (I love highway 99 "Sea to Sky": I always take it instead of the last bit of Trans-Canada highway even though it is much harder to hitch). Got to meet a very nice and poor native guy who hosted me. I made a bunch of candies on the road. The whole time it poured rain.

2nd day, yet another detour brought me to Lytton (through highway 12, which I had never hitched and I was quite glad to have the occasion) with a very interesting outdoorsy guy who was anthropologist, geologist, prospector, mineralogist (?), and you name it! Then met a french-Canadian girl who had moved in BC. Then got a trucker all the way to Calgary. Slept in his truck. I had in mind to stop at Banff and detour to Jasper, but since it was probably about -15 over there, I felt like it was a bit overkill.

3rd day, awaken at 4AM by the trucker saying it's 7 and time to go. He lifts me to the other end of town and drops me there. Pitch black, super dooper foggy, 100% humidity, and cold and windy. Got stuck there in the cold for 5 hours. That sucked a lot. I can't remember properly, but I think I ended up in Regina, might be wrong and might have taken more time to end up in Regina. What I am sure though, is that the Prairies -really- sucked because it was foggy and cloudy all the way. They hadn't seen sun in 2 weeks, I heard. I remember pitching my tent into a farm field just next to the highway right behind a tree line, and realizing I was right on manure the next day: my stuff stinked from there on. I also remember waking up to an iced-wall: it had poured freezing rain on the tent during the night... a good half-inch thick ice layer. I also remember walking to the end of a city contemplating RVs and thinking I could go sleep under them, but deciding to sit on the side of the highway in the cold dark and start playing guitar. Someone pulled over, and I ended up sleeping in his car for the night while he was having a diner with his family. That was another "wake up early and hitch uselessly in the cold morning" day because he was going to hunt with a friend and lifted me to the east end.

Next day, ended up in Winnipeg fairly late. Tried to hitch for 3 hours at the west end of town. When it was dark, decided to wait at the truck stop until late to go ask the Tim Horton if they could give me their doughnuts instead of dumping them (at around 2 AM?). Ended up watching TV there and feeling too lazy to walk outside. Slept on a chair, head on the table, with my headphones in the ears to reduce the ambient sound. Woke up with a pain in the shoulder, and a pizza slice given by some anonymous stranger during my sleep! Then took the bus to the east end, and got stuck there for 5 more hours. After 3 hours, a woman pulled over, and as I opened the door, she told me she was too scared of picking her 1st hitch-hiker and I failed at convincing her I was harmless. She asked me to return hitch-hiking and left (****!). 2 hours later, a lift of like 2 km to the middle of nowhere: a very bad spot. Luckily, a blessed soul stops after 15 minutes there and brings me quite far, but drops me in the middle of nowhere once again. Once again, luckily, someone picks me up within 5 minutes and off I go to Kenora. I get dropped at McD's, where I suspected the cashier girl might have had a little something for me, but hey, no time, let's get on the road again: I want to get home quick! I walk to somewhere I thought was the east end. Stayed there for 2 hours, until someone coming from the other direction stops, gives me a bagel, and after discussing, drives me to the homeless shelter, where I luckily enter because they forgot to lock the door. I thus get warm shelter and a good soup.

In the morning, I even get a lift from the staff to the by-pass where truckers pass. I hear on the radio that it is going to be snowy, and then freezing rain showers will pour. Oh god, I hate weather. Luckily, a woman made a U-turn because she thought I looked like her son, and because rain was starting to pour. She told me she had been driving for like 36 hours non-stop from BC or something like that. She suffered from severe insomnia, the reason why she was -just- starting to get sleepy. The car was very full with random stuff, and I had to ride with her dog on my lap all the way to Sudbury! (Oh yeah! Skipped most of Ontario, and finally got to see the Great Lakes because I usually pass north because people are friendlier.) She paid my food and a motel room. She dropped me at a gas station where someone pulled over right away as I was taking out my stuff from her car. We talk a bit, and he drives me a bit further to a good spot where I can pitch my tent: behind an abandoned house a bit out of the highway. That was a goddamn cold and damp -8°C night. Went pretty close to starting a little fire, but didn't want the cops to bother me.

Finally woke up at a reasonable time for hitching, ate a frozen Oh Henry and some granola stuff given to me by the homeless shelter. Started hitching, and a handicap-bus stopped for me and gave me a good 40 minutes drive, then gave me a bunch of change to buy a breakfast where he dropped me. I start hitching right away instead of wasting time with food-ordering. Get picked up pretty fast, and here's my ride to North Bay from an ex-military guy who thought he was racist and sexist, but actually wasn't and was quite glad to hear me rationalize his thoughts and explain to him why he wasn't what he claimed he was. Waited maybe an hour and a half at North Bay, where I decided to make an Ottawa sign to replace my Montreal one, which didn't seem to work. Got picked up in a few minutes after changing the sign (but the guy told me he'd pick me up anyways). Ride all the way to Ottawa! Getting closer to home. We stop at some military town to meet his brother and have a McD's (two tricks to you guys here: 1) ask for 2 McJuniors instead of the normal burgers... it's cheaper and provides more food, and 2) ask for a glass of water, and then fill that cup with their pops and stuff for free!). He drops me at the last light-post on the east end of Ottawa, and it's late already, but I'm so close to home! Back to hitching to get that final drive, even if it's dark. I picked up my Montreal sign again, and added "PLEASE" and "S.-V.-P." at the bottom. Danced a bit to warm up and catch drivers' attention flying by at 120km/h. Got picked up by a guy from Panama after about an hour, and he drove me all the way to my house's door in Montreal.

And there you go! Here is my 9 days adventure across Canada. Thought I'd share to let people know what it looked like.

My first time took me 4 days. Then 6, then 7, and now 9. The last two times, I became lazy and started using mostly only one sign saying either "Vancouver" or "Montreal". While this certainly contributed to slowing me down, I think the fact that I started looking more like a bum didn't help neither. I still believe the fastest way is to go for mid-long distances signs to catch more locals, and yet still catch trucker's attention."

5th crossing:
"I wasn't sure where to start from Montreal due to weather concerns, but in the end I went for the southern way Ottawa-bound. Luckily, my sister gave me a ride to some quite suitable spot. I got picked up within a few minutes. The next rides were all super quick as well (never waited more than 15 minutes). The day ended somewhere around Dymond, Ontario. It was snowing, and getting dark, so I set up my tent 100m off the highway, on some dirt road.

That morning was cold. The snow had become ice so I had to dig up the tent's spikes with my knife. I waited maybe 45 minutes before getting picked up. A breakfast was offered and gladly accepted. Then, as I'm dropped off, I walk in a store and ask the server there for some cardboard to make my sign. The next person to pick me up offered me a 20$ when dropping me off at some end of town. There, a priest offered me hosting for the night, but I kept hitching. Next ride: a trucker. He explained to me that I seemed very polite and respectful when I asked for my cardboard at the store from earlier: what a great coincidence. My last ride was from a cop: a good 50km off my mind. She dropped me in Hearst, Ontario. I pretty much waited max 20 minutes for all the rides of that day, until I got stuck in Hearst: from 3pm to 8pm, no one stopped for me. As I entered the truck stop there to warm up a bit, a server tells me I can get a free hotel room for the night from the police if it gets too cold (after a nice lady bought me a hot chocolate, and a sympathetic man gave me 25$), and fortunately for me, it got down to -16 Celsius that night. I went to the police station, asked for a room, and surely enough, I got a lift all the way to the closest hotel, and the O.P.P. paid me a room for the night! I took a nice warm shower, followed by a bath while reading some book I bought for my travel.

3rd day on the road... I woke up at 8am, but stayed in the hotel room until 11am (watched some news and weather report, hehe). Then, after making a new sign ("Longlac" now seemed like a better strategy than "Thunder Bay"), I walked my way back on the highway. I didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes before a trucker pulled over for me. Destination: Edmonton! Ontario's in the pocket, and it was up to me whether I wanted to pass north, or south to reach Prince George from Winnipeg. Obviously, I opted to go for Edmonton. So there goes 2 days with an awesome trucker that paid for all my food, and provided quite a lot of rhum (and a movie at night).

On the 5th day, as he drops me at Edmonton's West-bound truck stop, his friend pulls in and gives me a ride to the hitching spot. From there on, the next three cars to pull for me did it so quickly I didn't even have time to start writing the first letter on my new piece of cardboard. And the Angel of the Road was looking after me for sure because that third car decided on a whim to go for a 700km detour to drop me right at my destination (and offered goodies too). He was an interesting character: an oil-rig worker looking to become a rally-racer.

I had a blast, that's for sure. There are so many good people out there. Go hitch-hike, my brothers and sisters!"

Most memorable ride:
"Coming down from Prince George, going close to Vancouver. Me and my friend were hitch-hiking in this only (not-so-)suitable spot which was a construction zone with tons of cones blocking the way. We obviously moved quite a few of them, but left some to make sure cops or workers wouldn't bother us. It was fairly late in the afternoon.

Anyways, this guy pulls over, running over a few cones and not giving a single damn. He tells us to put our bags in his trunk. We happily oblige. As we open the trunk, we find to our great surprise... a pig! Just chilling there, on his little carpet. The guy then yells "Oh yeah, that's Joe, my pet!"

It turns out he really does consider it to be his pet just as much as his dog, which was not present. (He'll have to stop a few times on our way to take the pig out for walks.)

So as we leave our spot in his van, we start discussing. It turns out he was leaving his main house (from a small community) because the cops had started realizing there was a lot of pot-activity up there and were doing investigations, and he definitely didn't want to be there at that time.

As we drive heading south, he just articulates stories after stories: "Too bad it is dark outside, you'd see the mountains I claimed a part of because that's where I extract my jade to make jewellery and stuff." - "You know, ozone (O3) has anti-cancer properties. I injected some of that gas into my veins once, under the supervision of a doctor, just to prove the damn government wrong over their non-sense scaring people from discovering new solutions to fight cancer. Hell, if you inform yourself enough, you'll start realizing that it's the government itself that created cancer to regulate the masses because games and the media were not doing an effective job enough due to the population growth." And so on. You see, I was in for quite a ride. He'd talk a lot about how he used his rights to piss off cops trying to arrest his friends ("I always travel with the Canadian Constitution, see?") too. I definitely have learned some very interesting, and some very useful stuff with him.

Anyways, as we arrive close to his destination (which was pretty damn close to ours), he asks us if we want to come sleep at his house since it is so dark outside. I accept the offer, as my friend has been sleeping next to me during the whole drive.

As we arrive on his site, he informs us we will be sleeping in his "on-going project": The Magical Bus (https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/330299_10150795566045076_966143092_o.jpg) (you see a lot of our stuff a bit everywhere in this picture). Basically, he had bought a school bus, removed all the seats except the driver's seat, and transformed it into a RV (the picture does not show the bed, TV, and sofas behind). We then got to meet his brother, which, so he says, got rid of his cancer by smoking pot. We smoked a joint, and then they left us on our own.

The next day, we got to see his awesome property and its fields. After that, he gave us -a lot- of weed, drove us to a good hitching spot, and bought us a breakfast. Unfortunately, no contacts were shared, and we cannot remember in which city he brought us. :(

That's it people! If you do long-term hitching trips, you will definitely encounter "that one ride!". Go for it! :)"

Scariest ride:
"I got a ride from Whitehorse to Dawson (600 km) from a Quebecer guy (same nationality as me and my friend! :D). His truck had no windows on the sides: it was scotch-tape-crafted-windows that was preventing the car from being a blowing-machine. You'll understand it was extremely noisy. From left to right, it was: driver-friend-me. I couldn't hear anything they were saying.

Anyways, you must realize that when you are that much far up north, you cross about 3 cars per hour on the other side of the lane: you're pretty much on your own.

So this guy, says something to my friend, and then suddenly turns right, going off-road through a ridiculous trench and stops next to the tree line. He gets out of the car and moves toward his trunk. I start feeling a bit nervous, but does not ask anything to my friend, and when I turn back, I can't see him (he was crouched). After a minute, he reappears in front of the car with a ***** chainsaw. I kind of freaked out, but then my friend explained he was going to cut some dead trees to bring back some wood to heat his house, and that we were going to help him out for a little while.

I've hitch-hiked over approximately 95000km and have yet to meet a single person that would've wanted to hurt me in any way. While there is a certain danger present, you really shouldn't consider that it is likely at all. It's probably more dangerous to walk across the street on a red light.
Even hitch-hiking at night, I haven't had any problems.

Absolutely any autonomous person can do what I've done. :)

I've hitch-hiked over approximately 95000km and have yet to meet a single person that would've wanted to hurt me in any way. While there is a certain danger present, you really shouldn't consider that it is likely at all. It's probably more dangerous to walk across the street on a red light.
Even hitch-hiking at night, I haven't had any problems.

Absolutely any autonomous person can do what I've done. :)

I do love your pictures Payne. What adventure are you planning now?
I will be kayaking down from Skagway (Alaska) to Vancouver Island, leaving in May. After that, some cherry picking, and then I'll be hitch-hiking down to South America and spend a year out there.

You definitely shouldn't think it is a dangerous practice. However, to really see what it is all about, you do have to have some free time on your hand. A day or two of hitching will not show you much about the road life and its adventures.
