Why did you choose your Backpack / BOB?

I am probably covering something that has been covered before but I am curious why people choose their Backpacks.

My first Backpack was bought used for a three week trip around the Yucatan. It was a COS and was a misery to haul even with only 30 pounds in it.

It hit the trash as soon as I got back. These days my Backpack of choice is a Military Molle type with wide straps and waist belt. Even though I haven't gone more than ten miles with it I know it is a vast improvement on what I had. Bearing in mind that I bought it primarily for Camping in the Woods and as my "Bugout Bag". Personally I feel it is right for me, but that's just me and it seems to be really tough and durable.

So, what did you choose and why? I am particularly interested in what you chose for your Backpack as your BOB.

I have a lot of bags, from belt pouches to Med Alice packs.......duffle bags, carry on bad, shoulder bags.
Rubber Maid Action Packers, heavy duty mike crates, mostly for trucks, but carrying size if needed.

So kinda hard to answer your question other than to say, if it works for you, go for it....we all have different ideas and needs to carry.

You are on a life long quest.......on can never have too many bags.

LOL, it is true......a lofty goal....
But as you get older, adding a bigger truck and trailer, helps off set the "old timer Huh?'s"

It's better to have it and not need it,..... than to need it and not have it.

I have 3 ILBE Main bags..USMC current issue. (Internal frame ruck sacks) I have one in each of our vehicles and my DW uses the third one but she has actually never "packed" it more than a mile. Then I have a couple of External Frame packs and 5 or 6 smaller bags......

Kudos, There is a whole section on bags....lots of good threads and tons of opinions and experiences, ideas and view points. Really good reading if you have the time.

I have a lot of bags and packs. Some sit in "pre-staged" condition, ready to be used while others are available for the mood or situation I'm in.

I don't believe that the converse of the more you know, the less you carry is true......here's why. At this point in my life I no longer need to prove anything to anybody - including myself. I don't go out to "test my skills", but rather for the enjoyment of going out. I also am acutely aware of what bad things can happen to those that are unprepared and see no need to be unprepared.

So - I believe - the more you know, the less likely you are to place yourself into a bad situation.

It can be done....... Seen it happen on a deck repair and a new home construction site. Neither of which were on purpose though.

I, too, have a lot of packs. One time in a SHTF situation I was actually killed trying to decide which one to take with me. Oh the humanity!

I have more packs than you can poke a stick at. But my favourites are my large and medium alice (BOB) and a very old Australian Army Nam pack (now known as the Aust Pack). This was my first pack which I was given in the late 70's. It is small but is great for day walks, it is as tough as old boot leather and still in good condition.

I certainly have more packs than I could carry at once! They are set up for different situations and have a lot of redundancy. If in a saltwater environmennt, then a silicon bronze zipper (hard to find) is one of my requirements, as the others last a very short time. Truly waterproof, or lined with tough waterproof bags is also important to me. My favorites have a diagonal, wide single-strap, as one of my collar bones is metal! So, as with anything, it depends on what works for you. Buy quality where it is important and fit always. The features will be dictated by the intended usage. If there was a perfect one, we would all own it... With that said, I'll bet that most of us have some military surplus bags on-hand!

Ive got a large molle rucksack. I have several but its my favorite. I bought cause I swapped with a buddy who had one for a few miles one day and thought it was super comfortable. As for having to much stuff I ultralighted for yrs and yeah its cool to carry very little and "LIVE OFF THE LAND" I was raised in tue woods and have no problem with that but it sure is nice to have what I NEED when I NEED IT.

I use a molle bag now, comfort thing, has wide straps, adjustable belt with "clips" and the chest strap. Used a. Converse bag at first, worked well but was too small. I have 2 I bought for the added handles, but the straps hurt my shoulder (old dislocation injury). I also have 3 belts with homade and military add on pouches, a WWII "optics" bag and an old medic bag. I also have a few "fanny" packs that are sturdy and have "basic" equipment in them, matches toi shelter. Best part for me, with all these bags, all are capable of being attached together, carried on back or by hand (handles on center of rear of pack), or "saddled" on the dog. All the bags combined are just over 100 pounds, but I also have a little wagon with balloon tires, that folds. Less work for "the other furry one". Stuff in the trunk "accesible from inside the car" is inside a hardware tote. When I go hunting I take one belt (never leaves my body) and the Molle bag. I have "everything but the kitchen sink", but a couple of sticks and my plastic/hose I can make that too! So when SHTF, I can be out in less than 5 and on my way. All fits in the cart, and the cart fits in the back seat with the dog! Since I travel 50 miles a day to and from work at 2-4 am, I always have a good bag in the car. I also carry a 550 paracord belt I made with. Side release buckle with whistle, fire striker, and a "swiss tech" pocket tool, with light,knife, saw, screwdriver, pliers, and bottle opener (obsolete but found other uses for that) with snare wire weaved into the belt. =)

I chose my daypack because it was on clearance at my work at the time. Combined with my discount there was little chance of it's being a particularly bad deal no matter what. As it turns out 10 years later - still going strong though miles and miles of rocky headlands, the sierras, cascades and utah/arizona canyons - it's been the finest daypack I've ever owned. Enough to make me question the logic of making fashion-seasonal products and then retiring them permanently so you can bring them back with a slightly different color scheme for the coming spring.

I have more packs of one kind or another than I know what to do with. I have different packs for day trips, longer trips, GHB, BOB, medical and more. Each one chosen for it's specific function. I have bad shoulders as well. You need a bag that sits on your hips and only balances at the shoulder. That way you don't carry any weight on your shoulders.

Ive got an outdoor gear 50l pack that stays in my closet as a bugout bag,fully packed,my edc bag is an under armour ridgereaper day pack,and i love it,am saving up for the larger ridgereaper.the one i have is super light and had this great cushion for your back,its nice and firm,very comfortable,the only drawback is it could have more pockets,as it only has 2 plus the main bag.

For day hiking or a trip that will last overnight, I have a Kelty Redwing. It's small, lightweight and can hold the basics without any extra room. My Kelty has been going strong for about 7 years of moderate use.

My "real" pack is ALICE. I find it to be the more comfortable over an MOLLE and less awkward. I would also say more accessible, because I was able to add a machete scabbard and a rifle scabbard on the pack with a little help from a friend. I also was able to sew two canteen holders on the side, which allows for easy access to water when I need it. I also carry several bulk items normally, which need the larger compartment space the ALICE has over the MOLLE.

Also a MOLLE is designed for someone wearing an interceptor vest, and if you are not wearing body armor, a MOLLE is completely unnecessary. I also find the MOLLE to have numerous parts that stick out, so its hard to move around around the woodlands. For a woodsman like me, this makes the MOLLE an annoyance.

A MOLLE is not as moisture resistant as an ALICE, and I spend a lot of time in humid swamps too, so I need the moisture resistance.

For help in carrying stuff, I have also have web belts with pouches, holster and other accessories.

I'm a bit lost with this post. The Alice already has equipment hangers that will accommodate the GI canteen cover. As far as size, the Molle is actually somewhat larger. The Molle large rucksack holds 4000 cu in while the ALICE large rucksack holds just 3800 cu in. While 200 cu in may seem like a small difference it equates to a lot more gear. I've upgraded my ALICE with Molle shoulder straps because they are a **** of a lot more comfortable than the OEM ALICE straps. I don't agree with your assessment on the body armor issue. I have two MOLLE packs and have both set up as BOBs. I find them perfectly acceptable and comfortable. I don't claim to be a woodsman but neither the ALICE nor the MOLLE are a problem for me. I generally don't traipse around in elephant grass, reeds or willow thickets though. I guess in the end it's whatever works for you.

I bought mine from a local backpacking store here in town. I chatted with the owner who is former military. He recommend me a nice BOB and I've been using it ever since.

Its durable and strong enough to take on my long treks.

I have converted back over to my Med. Alice for most of my day hikes (also stays packed as a BOB). Carries better than my day pack did (Camelback HAWG). I can for more stuff in the Alice, but really try not to. Mainly have it if I happen to want/need to spend the night out.
