No I am not running hiding or wanted for anything just chance I have with what was left to me. Last year I was left with little over 600 acres has no power has 9-10 acre pond small creaks it is located in southeast United States. There is lots of deer small game hogs ducks snakes coons coyotes. In less then a year I will be going down there to live I currently live 12 hours away. I have a 4x4 truck and enclosed trailer I will be taking down that are both paid for to carry everything I will need after I unload everything I will give it to close family with titles and bill of sales to help pay for land taxes which aren't as bad as one would think. I am 27 good health and good shape. I will be going there to live on the land I do have some bushcraft skills lots of hunting trapping snaring fishing skills I am knowledgeable bout some of the edible and medical plants in that area. Yes I know I will get told I want make it out there in wild but I am going to do this so any help would be nice. A lot of what I read doesn't pertain to southeast region so looking for extra help. I want to build a somewhat hidden large bushcraft shelter there are lots of pines oak gum and other trees in area. The area gets a lot of rain in summers and winter temps hardly ever get down to teens maybe at night for a week or 2 during winter. Summer temps can get up t 100+ so the shelter needs to be rain proof and help hold heat for winter and large enough for 2 people plus supplies plastic tubs cun cases cloths food what nots. I currently have little over $17,000 and should have close to 20,000 by the time I leave. I am thinking about letting 1 person go with me if they are interested cause I know there will be a lot of labor work everyday that will need to be done. If I do let a person go they will need to have there own supplies and min 2 year supplies of food for them weather its freeze dried canned Mres or whatever it is they want plus they must be skilled in woods survival hunting fishing and other things. I am looking to see what type shelter I should build how to store meat without power if temps aren't below freezing yes I know u can smoke and salt but salting will be out question cause want always have salt. Any thoughts or advice will be great. Yes I know there are high risk of death out there after supplies run out. There are poisonous snakes in area would like tips on how to keep them away from camp or shelter. Here is a list of things I have just off top of my head sorry if I miss some things.

Looking to be stealthy as possible and would like to try to keep shelter hidden yes I am aware of the hurricanes and tornados that are at risk in this area and yes there can be some pretty nasty southern storms that roll in. Any help or advise will be great thanks in advance.

There's a lot of things I might take with me but two years of MRE's would NOT be on the list. For a whole lot of reasons.

My suggestion is to take some serious time and figure out what you really need. Right now, you are thinking with your heart because this is a grand idea. Living on the land and building a home there is one thing but you can't live off the land especially if it's all woods and/or you don't plan on farming.

Read this:

Why do you need to be stealthy? You own the land. Build a cabin that will last, even if it is small.

And if you are planning to live off ramen, hot dogs, spam, and MREs you are not going to remain very healthy.

Rick posted at the same time. :)

Yeah, what he said....you will have to farm. Bring farming stuff. Also, bring livestock. Building a homestead is different than a survival shelter. One is for the long haul, the other is for a week.

RMFT - " ... I will be going there to live on the land I do have some bushcraft skills lots of hunting trapping snaring fishing skills ..."

It won't matter that you own the land: the game and fish belong to the State and you'll have to obey the game and fish laws of your State just as does every other resident. Might want to contact the Game & Fish Dept. there and find out about all the hunting and fishing regulations before you start hunting and fishing. It'll save you a trip to the local Gray Bar Hotel.

Yes I can fish in pond with no license hunting as long as I'm able to show land is mine I don't have to have license for deer rabbit squirrel hog raccoon coyote possum only thing I do have to show would be dove stamp and duck stamps is what the local game wardens told me

I guess I'm confused as well. If you own the land why build a crappy shelter and not a cabin?

RMFT
12-16-2013, 10:12 PM
Over time I can do a cabin but for now want a shelter. I don't want just build a small cabin at first then relize I might of wanted it in different spot. The other reason is just something I want till / if I want to build a cabin or if I just want to make couple different shelters or small cabins in couple different spots so I'm not in one spot all the time. Hope what I am saying makes sense I have less than a year and each day that passes I get more excited bout this expecially when out in the woods during the weekend practicing bushcraft snaring and trapping as well as trying to become more knowledgeable on various plants and there uses

One other thing well maybe a couple. Should I try to bring a dog I can buy food for now but when I run out it would be like caring for 2 instead of 1 but the company might be worth it. The other is I'm thinking bout getting some rabbits and chickens to pin up but down fall with that is predators and trying to keep them pinned up if like a coyote got in there and messed up pin and they got out?

Get a Dachshund and a shovel... He would keep you supplied with meat, year-round, and could stay fat off the feet and heads. Not kidding.

600 ac. is a good size for an off grid homestead (maybe to big to keep up with) but to small to hide on.

In my opinion, the most forgotten, most important tools/knowledge are for food preservation. This is particularly true in the Southeast, where it is too humid for air-drying and too mild to count on winter freezing. Yes, you can theoretically make jerky over a fire, but this is an art that must be practiced--perfected--too much or too little heat, and the meat will rot in a few days. Also, think of the bounty of berries and fruits that are only available for a short time seasonally. Same with any gardened or foraged veggies--you need the tools and skills to preserve them. So, I would replace the cases of MREs with cases of Mason jars and at least 2 huge kettles. Also, think about stocking vinegar and salt in mass-quantities.

More important--developing those lost skills. Killing a deer is easy enough. But do you know how to process and preserve it for later use? These skills and tools are so important, that every single item on your food list has been pre-preserved for you. And this need will be heightened if you are living off the land--not lessened.

Forget the shelter and either build a cabin or finagle a way to trade your trailer for a small self-contained travel trailer. Build a Bushcraft shelter afterwards for an emergency escape hide if you feel you must. Your whole idea has some merit but seems half-arsed to me..... :cool2:
Also have several big dogs...if things go south you can always eat them....:sneaky2:

You will need a smoke house and root celler as soon as you can build them. You might also condsider drilling a well so you wont have to boil water all the time, a good well is a blessing on a homestead! I would try to get a well drilled, smoke house, fenced in chicken coup, and root celler set up before I ever moved there as well as a garden spot set up. It is going to take you a year + or probably 2 to get into a fully self sustaining homestead and the more you can do before you go, the better it is all going to work. Just pick the best spot to build a cabin and go for it. Look for the best place for a garden, and the easiest place to put in a road to your homestead and quit worrying about being hidden. Once you get established, you can build a hiding spot later like a small underground shelter or something way away from your cabin.
Put all of your effort into achieveing self sustainment and worry about all of the SHTF stuff once you are established and have a working homestead!

I would like to know in which state is it legal to kill a deer out of season and without a license even if you do own the land?

RMFT
12-17-2013, 01:44 PM
Its not legal to kill them out of season but it is legal if you own land you don't have to obtain a license. I know south Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, and not 100 % sure on Louisiana but pretty sure Louisiana is another state not sure bout other states also think Alaska might be another as long as you homestead there but not sure

No, in Alaska you must have a hunting or subsistence license. Alaska hunting regulations are many and complicated, that's one of the reasons out of state hunters must hire a local guide.

RMFT, you did not mention what is your profession. You did mention in your first post that you have $17,000 and should have $20,000 put away by the time you move to your 600 acres. I would submit that in a realistic situation, that $20,000 won't last too long so do you have plans to work at some profession there to maintain an income?

Also am wondering what are the real estate taxes on 600 acres? Do you have an agriculture or timber tax exemption? Those would help reduce R.E. taxes, but it would also depend on the laws of the State in which your 600 acres lie.

Last year land tax was around $3,400 I have my uncle that lives few miles away he has bout 2,200 acres he farms. I will be trading him my truck and trailer I m bringing down in return to help pay for taxes over the years I will also be helping him out a few times a year to help pay for taxes as well. I will also be able to work for him a little if I need extra things like ammo new axe or whatnot. I am very blessed to be left the land and also have family close to help me out with taxes or to check up on me.

I understand there has been tons of arguments and court cases over this, and that it is still illegal in most places. But. How can they bust you on your own property. To bust you wouldn't they need to be trespassing on your land?

Randy - Most laws have exceptions for LEO. Here is the California trespass law. Emphasis is mine.

California Penal Code 602....

"(a)Every person other than a public officer or employee acting within the course and scope of his or her employment in performance of a duty imposed by law, who enters or remains in any noncommercial dwelling house, apartment, or other residential place without consent of the owner, his or her agent, or the person in lawful possession thereof, is guilty of a misdemeanor.

(b)Every person other than a public officer or an employee acting within the course and scope of his employment in performance of a duty imposed by law, who, without the consent of the owner, his or her agent, or the person in lawful possession thereof, enters or remains in any noncommercial dwelling house, apartment, or other residential place while a resident, or another person authorized to be in the dwelling, is present at any time during the course of the incident is guilty of aggravated trespass punishable by imprisonment in a county jail for not more than one year or by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by both that fine and imprisonment."

RandyRhoads
12-18-2013, 11:55 AM
But then what's the point of a search warrant? If an officer simply thinks you're inside with say, something stupid like an 11 round magazine. Wouldn't it be within his duty to just let himself in?

Curious too, in fences off property are search warrants required to enter? Or only structures (homes)?

Rick
12-18-2013, 12:30 PM
If an officer sees you violating the law even inside your own home he/she doesn't need a search warrant to enter. If a game warden hears you shooting even on your property you might just turn around to find them standing there. If they were coming on your property to look for poached game such as meat in a freezer or antlers in your barn or pics on your computer then they would have a search warrant.

Seniorman
12-18-2013, 02:33 PM
In every State I know, "game wardens" are sworn officers of the law. They have the same authority and arrest powers as a sworn peace officer. They do not carry that pistol, ammo, handcuffs, pepper spray, and radio on their belts for ballast. Their main priority is enforcing the game and fish laws and regulations of the State, but if they have reasonable cause to believe a person is "poaching," even on his own property, they can come on that person's property without a warrant, no matter how many "No Trespassing" signs the property owner posts.

As Rick said, however, to search a person's home, freezer, etc., a warrant must be issued by a judge.

If it were I, I'd buy a hunting and fishing license, get a copy of the State's Fish and Game laws and regs, study them carefully, and hunt and fish according to the laws and regs. It'd save a lot of future misery.

Just my opinion.

That would really be the easiest way. Not that hard to just spend a few bucks on a license.

I guess that makes sense why so many DFG wardens get shot, now have tac medics and such. You go snoopy around property people don;t expect you to your bound to run into trouble. Weather it's just some angry drunk owner, pot farm, whatever...

An officer can enter if the have reasonable belief that a crime is being committed. So, if someone was beating you to death with a bat and the cop knew it, he can enter. They do not have the right to trespass without some type of evidence or reasonable cause.

A lot of times game wardens use tracks to follow poachers back to their houses. Eye witness reports. Navigable waters even through private property are usually sovereign land below the high water line. So a game warden can without probable cause "trespass" on what you think of as your land up to the high waterline and gather evidence that allows further investigation.

The law is still stacked in the poachers favor. But, it has changed a lot since 1992 in Florida. Starting with a felony if you run and if you tamper with evidence.

Yep. I don't know what it's called in other States but in Calif., that comes under the heading of "Exigent circumstances" in the Penal Code.

I have heard many people say that it is a good idea to sit on the land for a year before building permanent structures. This gives you a better idea of how mother nature works on your property, like water flow, wind direction...etc. Do what randyt suggested....get a sturdy tent and live in it for a year, then build a cabin.
Also, if you plan to live there for any amount of time, and plan to live off of what is there, you NEED livestock. Chickens are the bare necessity, but you will want more than that. Do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Rabbits are also great to have. Also look at goats. Dogs will only make things better, unless you get the wrong type and it eats all your livestock. You also need to garden. Don't expect that much success the first year. It takes time to learn.

DSJohnson
12-20-2013, 02:18 AM
1. I do not understand for sure but, is it your intention to go to your 600 acres and never come off it again?
2. Buy the tent, really....buy the tent
3. Have you ever "put in" a garden? Ever worked one? Ever "put up" (canned) any food?
4. Are you a hunter right now? Do you hunt regularly already?
5. Do you intend to only hunt on your "place" and to only fish on your place? Not go off your place to hunt or fish?
6. How far will you have to walk to get to town (without relying on anyone else)?
7. Where do you intend to store all that stuff on the list while you are living in the "bushcraft shelter"
8. How are you planning on doing your laundry? Washing your dishes and yourself?
9. What level of medical training do you have right now?
10. Have you ever cut a tree down? By hand I mean. Then cut it up into fire wood? Ever tried to make a piece of "lumber" from a tree?

I can sure understand and I share your desire to live "off the grid" but I can not see how your plan enables you to accomplish it, based on what you have said so far. Why sell your pick up and trailer to pay the taxes? Why not just pay them? You say that you think you will have a stake of almost $20,000 when you make your move. So, pay them the first year and keep your pick up. I am positive that you can live and live well on your 600 acres if you want to raise a garden and some common meat animals like pigs, goats and chickens. They also make real good bartering material if you chose to not use money.

As to your list:
Not gonna say much about it because most of it does not actually make much sense to me.
But you did ask for comments.

Guns:
Where and how are you going to store all these guns? Why do you need so many different guns? Most settlers "going out to the frontier" usually only had a shotgun and a rifle. In my opinion pick a rife, shotgun and maybe a couple of pistols if you want and sell the rest.
Are you going to reload your ammo or just plan on taking what you will need for the rest of your life?
Air rifles are good
Bows/crossbows are good and quiet if that is important to you. Arrows are renewable, that is you can make good usable arrows your self if you want.

Food:
I am pretty lost on your list but here goes:
Why do you plan on bringing in two years worth of food? Are you giving yourself two years to get self sufficient? If so, why not just buy a couple of months supplies at a time? I mean really where are you going to put 2 years worth of MREs, SPAM and canned foods for two people? Just stack them up and tarp them down?
Do you cook? Do you ever eat gravy, cake or cornbread? What are you going to use in place of milk? Canned milk? Dry milk? Have you considered getting a milk goat or a milk cow? What about fresh vegetables in your diet. Gonna just use native greens and edibles? I saw that you mentioned having seeds, I will ask you again, have you ever made a garden from scratch? Cleared and broken and weeded a plot to garden? How are you going to water it?
What about eggs, flour, sugar, coffee/tea, cornmeal, rice and potatoes?
Your list is seriously deficient when you consider a "balanced" diet.

Tools:
Shovels (2)
Sharpshooter shovel
hoe
garden rake
a pick/mattock
a bow saw, w/extra blades
a cross cut saw
hack saw with extra blades
a maul
a brace
bits/augers
draw knife (2)
axe
double bit axe
froe
splitting maul
splitting wedges
hatchet
hammer
pry bar
wood chisels
nails
files
hones for the saws
sharpening stones; one bench size and a couple of "pocket" stones
You have knives listed with your tools and since I am a little crazy when it comes to knives I am just going to say a good lock blade and a good pocket knife and then a good belt/sheath/side knife.
I am positive I am missing some really important tools but this is all kind'a seat of the pants as I am sitting here.

Vehicles
Your choice of a bike is probably very smart. Me, I have several riding mules that I can also use as pack animals and they are also broke to harness. But they take lots of upkeep and maintenance(I just like their company I guess)

Kitchen:
Hmmmm...I don't see any kind of stove listed except for the "wood burning stove". Are you going to be doing all your cooking either on a camp fire or this wood burning stove?
Get a couple of big pots to wash your dishes in, I would choose enamel ware so that you can put them directly on the fire to heat the water. I mean BIG pots..at least 32 quarts one to use to rinse and one to wash with. You will also use them a lot to help when you are butchering/processing your food
Skillets (2) one being at least 12" across the bottom w/lids (I would choose cast iron but then I cook over a camp fire alot)
Not a fan of plastic utensils/pots/containers for using in a camp kitchen or camping myself. They have a place I just don't use them much. I do use the daylights out of good zip lock bags though.
metal containers are good.
I would make sure I have a coffee pot just in case you do have company and want to be sociable, yes you can make coffee in a pan/pot
I would also make sure I had enough plates, bowls and flatware for guests.
I have fed ten to 15 people for three weeks at a time with a pretty meager camp kitchen.
one 10 quart dutch oven w/lid and legs(A deep one)
one 12 quart dutch oven w/lid and legs
a set of pots for stews and boiling/cooking soups/veggies (4 pots not counting the big ones above)
one 12" skillet with a lid
a couple of 8" butcher knives
a meat fork
two parking knives
potato peeler
a steel
serving spoons
ladle
measuring spoons and cups (metal)
two spatulas
two good wooden spoons
Salt and pepper shakers

okay I just realized it is after midnight. So I am going to quit here and come back and finish commenting on the rest of your list. I sure hope you are worth the time and thought partner.

This is the way I would play it:
1. Buy a good big tent at least a 12 X 16 with an 8 foot ridge and 6 foot walls
a. Put a wood stove in the tent
b. I would not buy/choose a tent with a sewn in floor by the way
c. Buy a couple of good tarps to use over your tent. A tarp over your tent makes it warmer when it is cold, cooler when it is hot, and it helps to keep things dryer when it rains.
Also a tarp out in front is nice, kind'a like a porch, a place where you can sit when it is raining or shade when the sun is blazing.
2. Pick a high spot to pitch the tent that looks like it drains well and does not have a place for water to stand after a rain.
3. If you are planning on using the water out of the creeks and ponds you maybe should put the tent pretty close to the water so you will not have to haul it very far.
4. I would be sure and pick a spot away from your water supply to build your outhouse.
5. After I had the tent spotted I would build a wood yard, garden and a chicken pen.
6. Go to a local live stock auction and visit,
7. Make some acquaintances with the locals.
8. Find a church to attend
9. Check out the local feed store
10. Buy some hens and a rooster or two
11. Buy a couple of pigs
12. Buy a couple of nannys and at least one billy
13. Start living......

By the way you will still have to file a federal and state tax return. Regardless of how much/little you make you still have to file. I would think you would like to "stay off the radar" of the local law enforcement and for sure to avoid any issues with the Federal authorities.

Do you intend to ever "draw" your social security retirement? If so you will have to have a permanent legal address and a banking account for an electronic deposit.

Spend some time reading the treads here about "living off grid" and "homesteading" Write down your goals and how you intend to achieve them. Make a real plan and then stick with it. Good luck and please keep us posted!

That's a nice list DSJohnson, Lots of money is something good to have. When I was a young fella, I lived off grid and struggled over the money aspect. Even 50 dollars a week would have made a huge difference back then.

You have to work enough hours to earn enough points to even draw it. At 27 I doubt he has earned the minimum number of points. Assuming he lives off grid and does not pay into SS between now and then he won't be eligible. Working for cash or barter does have its drawbacks.

Have you given any thought to solar power?
A refrigerator run off two 6 volt golf cart batteries
would be nice to have. Maybe some lights a radio..................

RMFT,
I am very curious about a lot of your ideas and proposal. I usually try not to get "into" other people's business but for some reason I am kind'a interested in why a 27 year is where you seem to be. So I want to ask some questions...neat thing is you , of course, do not even have to acknowledge them or me. I will leave the psychological stuff to others and trust me, I am sure they will show up. :online2long: I just want to know where your skill level/experience level is. so that is why the "20 questions"

1. Are you currently a 3, or 4 season camper? That is, have you and do you actually go out and spend time in the woods/wilderness, just setting up camp and staying there for a couple of days/weeks or so?
1.a. What kind of camper are you? Do you haul most of your stuff to the camp site in a pickup or bicycle or back pack? Trailer?
1.b. How long have you stayed in the woods with just what you could carry for 5 or 6 miles in a back pack?

Okay more questions and thoughts when/if I get an answer/response.

No response yet? Hopefully you didn't kill his dream. Maybe I'm impatient. I'm curious about this one as well.

LOL, let me see. Sell it for 3 million or live like a pauper. ?????

After the sell you could buy a few acres that backs up to state land, grow / raise everything necessary and have income for living and retirement. I dunno. Really?

I say, go for it!
It wont be easy, but neither is much of anything in life. If it's what you want to do, then do it.
As far a shelter, you could dig out a spot in the side of a hill, and build a log structure within it.
Provide plenty of drainage, to keep it dry inside. South facing entrance and window to provide some light.
By having it in ground like that, it will keep warm in winter, and cool in the summer. Later down the road, if you build a larger cabin, you could use the in-ground as a root cellar.

I would also highly recommend a radio. I have one that is solar and dynamo (as well as option for 3 AAA). It's always nice to have some music/talk radio when the sun goes down.

DsJohnson, that was an excellent post. First thought of mine is he is one of the young dreamers that frequently show up on sites like this.
In case he's not, my suggestions are like this.
Continue your current form of employment and spend weekends on the property. Explore all the property and locate water sources, game trails, actual timber stands, ( the pix you showed didn't outline your property), is the woods harvestable, certain kinds of pine is not very salable, oak is. Once you get a good sense of the lay of the land, make the decision where the best place to build, keeping in mind the water source, wind protection and the Southern exposure. Then while still at 'home' draw up plans for your 'cabin' keeping in mind you will probably have to deal with planning and zoning people.
You could then at some point use vacation time, if you get any, to start building.

Have to get ready for wedding so have to leave you with these thoughts, IF your still around.

hopefully we were all young dreamers at one time, now I'm a old dreamer LOL. There a old joke amongst my circle of friends. It was a question posed to a old fella " Milt, when do we have it all figured out? when you're sitting in a chair like me old and all broken up." Youth is wasted on the young and wisdom is wasted on the old but heck hopefully the trip was worth it.
