Here is a true story of my worst night living "outside". (I posted this at a homeless forum and a film maker guy says he is interested in making this into a movie and said he'd be getting back with me very soon. So I'm sitting here holding my breath, (not!), you know how reliable these Hollywood types are. )
The Night Of The Abandoned House.
It was about 6 pm on a Friday night in February and my friends, Mike, Paul and I decided we would take a bus ride to Northbend. It is a drag going home to a dark, damp tent so early in the evening, a leisurely ride to the Bend would make a nice diversion.
We had the mini bus to ourselves and I could have ridden on that little bus all night.
When we arrived our thinking was to buy some small Cokes and sit somewhere warm for a couple hours until the bus was ready to take us back. Big jukebox Friday night eh?
The Micky-Ds was festooned with 30 somethings and their riotous children, we stood there for about one minute and decided to flee for our very sanity.
The three of us ended up at Safeway with fountain drinks. Paul asked me once more if I were certain I didnt want to buy his large can of pepper spray (I declined) and Mike was telling us about a crazy old man in a Chinatown hotel who used to spray bug spray in the face of prostitutes who erroneously knocked on his door.
I layed a couple of my best stories on em, including the time I was trapped in a dumpster with two cops a few feet away.
We killed a couple hours, then the bus took us back to High Point and I think I arrived at my camp around 9 oclock.
My camp was an old abandoned house, must have been empty for 30 years, completely trashed. We used to call it the haunted house.
I decided to set up in the garage instead of the house, it was pretty spooky and the garage was more open and not as dank.
About 2 am I got up for my nightly smoke break, it was very cold, my breath hovered in front of the smiling full moon. Our friend the moon I remember thinking and gazed at the pleasant, benevolent face I imagined looking over us all.
Suddenly two cars pulled up to the front of the house, two sets of identical headlights, I had to think it was a couple cops having a pow-wow or wanting to check the place out, I was not worried, but hid in the shadows.
No, these were not cops, just 10 teenage boys with baseball bats and axe handles twas all.
They all lined up before the front door of the house. It really didnt quite dawn on me what they were about until the leader said use that wheelbarrow for the bodies, theres a hole right there, we could put em there.
Okay, these nice clean-cut, some mothers little angels were hunting the homeless and I dont think they were going to ask if they wanted to join the baseball team
Fortunately, they didnt check the garage. I was panicky, yet my thinking was fast and clear. I think your brain goes on auto-pilot at such times. If they sent one of em to look in the garage I was going to either kill or hurt him seriously so he would want to go to the hospital. Also, I wanted his bat.
Well, upon signal they burst into the house, yelling and beating the walls. The leader took them down into the basement and that was the time I decided to boogie.
I didnt even take the time to put my boots on, I left in my stocking feet as quickly, but as quietly as possible.
They left their cars unattended and idling, I could have easily taken one and been long gone before they knew. I would have trashed the heck out of it later, but I left my wallet there in my haste and just wanted to take the sure thing and get away on foot, I didnt know if they heard me and would be in pursuit or not.
I hid in the woods for the rest of the night, I was in shock for a couple days after, I had never been so terrified. I didnt know if these little angels would merely beat me to death or tie me up and torture me for months.
For a long time after I wanted to get even, and to this day I think I would want to mess em up pretty good, especially the leader. I planned all kinds of booby traps for them and kept my eye out in town for quite some time.
Two days later I went back and all my gear was intact, they never looked in the garage at all.
So this is why I say never squat somewhere too obvious, you are better off way out in a tent where people seldom go.
Your wits are your best friend, comfort and weapon in tough times and dire circumstances, use them first.

____A note: And it seems my fears were well founded...
About six months after the above incident, a girl from the local high school lied and said a guy she was interested in, but who spurned her had raped her...
I guess she told the guys that I encountered that night because they took the kid to the abandoned house, tied him to a tree and beat him into a coma that lasted six weeks.
Be safe folks, this is why we strongly suggest camping in the woods and staying away from obvious places like abandoned houses and bridges and downtown doorways!

And a further note, the filmmaker guy did indeed make a film about that night and played it at the UC San Bernardino World Homeless Day convention.
He is not a big pro or anything, but is one of the teachers at the college...
So, I did live to tell the tale and didn't end up another statistic.

I don't know everything about being homeless, I've never hopped a freight train or eaten out of dumpsters, but just as many folks would say that was to my credit.

Just getting by sometimes one need to think out side the box.
I have never been homeless, although I have done some extended camping in my younger years.
A Jungle hammock in the truck of my '53 Chevy served for many nites in a state park when it was better to stay than drive...for a lot of reasons.
Same park, on any week end had many family reunions and various parties, that had plenty of food and drink....and so many people no one knew who was who.
Parks also provide showers, bathrooms, fresh water and even lately garbage dumpsters...as well as dumping stations for port a potties.
Truck stops also provide showers and washing machines, for a few bucks......
Yeah, lots of little stuff.

Yes, a lot of folks swear by their hammocks and use them all the time, others are big on bivys.
I used to make a "poor man's bivy" by putting down a tarp and maybe a little cardboard on the ground, then my sleeping bag, then I cut three long stakes, push them into the ground just above my head, then take a piece of dark cloth that breathes well and just cover the stakes and your torso with it. Nice and airy and no bugs.
Now, if I think it might rain, I put more stakes around me and take a disposable plastic painter's tarp, about $2 and cover the whole works with that, being sure to leave an end open like a pup tent for air... very important!.
Cheap, disposable, can be gotten at almost any hardware store...
State parks are good for washing up during season.
Many are free or a quarter for hot water.
Also... "blending" into someone's picnic... that's a keeper-tip for sure! :cool:
And, there are community centers where you can shower for $2 and sometimes for free if you can plead your case well enough, lol.
Something else, a gym membership, lots of the "invisible homeless" do that.
Oh, another good tip for keeping clean: Keep a water spray bottle on you, great for keeping cool in the summer too and it makes an extra drinking water bottle... I can't tell you how many times I woke up in the middle of the night all sweaty... a spray bottle and some paper towels are a great relief.
My first kind of "stint" homeless in So. Cal, I met some folks under a bridge, they had a well established camp there... they adopted me and showed me the "ropes" and let me camp near them. (I became a very good pan-handler in Cali... I hated doing it, but there at first anyway you had few other options. They liked me for that and I used to even take their orders for the store without them giving me any money.. "Okay, Greg want's a Magnum and Airplane John want's a pack of gum and Guitar John wants a pint of Wild Irish Rose so he can play the blues... and Sonny.. Sonny want's his Mad Dog..."
("Sonny and the boys"..., Sonny was in his sixties, was the ring leader and lent me his good coat the first night and even had a hot meal of spaghetti-Os. Nice guys and it was much like Steinbeck's Cannery Row. (Or maybe Dicken's Oliver Twist? :rolleyes:) I was lucky to fall in with a reasonably decent bunch. :))
(Lol, the last time I saw them they were loaded down in a guy name Mondo's beat up car headed to Las Vegas as they did every month with their assistance checks and Sonny's Social Security money...:D)
But I actually suggest keeping to yourself for the most part and camping alone and telling NO ONE where your camp is. Lots more on all this to come.
That time with Sonny and Co, lasted for about two weeks (the first two weeks outside, out of what would become 12 years and more than a thousand nights folks) and when I got back with some old friends who let me use their shower, my legs were as black as coal, no exaggeration.
Gas station bathrooms are good for "bird-bathing" it, you can lock the door behind you, use the hand soap for shampoo, blow dry your hair with the hand dryer, and before I leave I make sure that bathroom is a good sight cleaner than when I found it. (It's simply "paying your way" isn't it?)
Also, KFC/Taco Bells usually have a bathroom you can lock behind you.
Very important rule: Don't pee in your own well water.
I've seen cops go through camps and do nothing... not even say a word, they were just looking for someone maybe or just wanted to see what's going on.
I've also seen cops haul people off to jail with HEAVY fines placed on them for having a trashed-out camp...
Leaving trashy camps and leaving bathrooms etc trashed or just not washing at all and remaining filthy.. these are the things that will make it difficult for you and other homeless too.
LNT: "Leave No Trace".
There is NO reason to remain filthy and washing up is one of the few "rich people" perks we can do for almost no cost.
Same with clothes, there are lots of clothing banks and thrift stores around, so no excuse on that count either.

First let me say happy Veteran's Day to all my fellow Veterans.... USAF myself, 1980-1984. Of course the Air Force is the least "military" of the services (Air Force Pukes! :cool:) so I can't say that my service helped my survival/homeless skills much in a direct sense, but many times it did give me confidence and assurance that I would make it through no matter what.
My job was a flight simulator technician, repair, operate and maintain a 35 million dollar video game with a motion base and full visuals to kill simulated commies with and also nuke Albuquerque NM. (lol)
My homeless Odyssey began in Southern California, I was raised in West Covina Ca., but as a homeless person there I spent most of the three or so months in lovely El Monte Ca. A depressed, dangerous place even in good economic times. Lots of gangs and plenty of other tramps.
Hey, I figured this was "where I was supposed to be"... even though El Monte and much of So. Cal isn't really big on "services".
I know a lot of people have heard about Venice Beach and Santa Monica as some kind of homeless havens... DO NOT make the mistake of going there.
But "place" can make a huuuuuge difference! Can't emphasize that enough...
I know what Kennedy said: "Ask not what your country can do for you etc..."
But would you make your bed in a burning building?
So, picking up and moving is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of improving your situation. (And that doesn't just go for homeless either.)
I like a small to medium-sized town with reasonably clement weather, not too far from a big city, but not too close either.
Now, of all the places I've been, all over the country pretty much, the best town I can recommend is Issaquah Washington... it is a model town for homeless. So find a place like Issaquah... 10 to 20 thousand in population with some services and easy camping on the outskirts.
I lived for years, stealth camped about 20 minutes outside of town, (eventually I started camping right in town...) but no real need for that, the best camping is just off the many trails of "Trailhead City"

Issaquah is a great little town in any respect, there are no "ghettos" or bad sides of town, it's very prosperous, there is a hot meal at the Fire Station every weekday, a great clothing/food bank... a King County Flagship library with computers, a pretty new Community Center... Issaquah is a little gem, my favorite little town in America.
And... it was a great place to drum up work...
I did the hardest physical labor of my life as a homeless "bum"...
I always had money, but I couldn't afford to live in semi-ritzy Issaquah and the places I could afford, I wouldn't want to live there and I wouldn't want to have to commute from say Downtown Seattle (Chinatown) either.
Some of my professional tramp friends, like the ones in that abandoned house story, some have been living "outside" for 20 years that I know of and have worked full time almost the whole way, how about that?
Others.. they just got hooked on the travelling... they have no family, their kids hate 'em... burned all their bridges.. and "ain't nothin' keeping them here".
I realized in California that for the first time in my life I was truly free and could pick and choose the place I wanted.
I had been to most of the country, but had never been to the Pacific Northwest.
It has been more than 20 years up here now, I have a successful business and a beautiful little piece of Hood Canal that's all my own.
(Yeah I know... back into the "rat-race", lol :D)
My father never lived to enjoy his retirement, I'm taking mine folks.
So in short, don't be afraid to see what's on the other side of the hill, sometimes the grass really is greener! :cool:

So I'm just guessing here....not married?
There seems to be a lot of interest, at least around here.....in running away to the wilderness.
Most haven't thought it thru too much, as just keeping warm in the northern places can be the biggest problem.
Out at our "Place" the name we have had bestowed on our cabin....there is a guy that has been living out here....small town in SW Wisconsin...for quite a while.
I won't say he is/was homeless, as he seems to have moved on......but started out in a blue bus, got flooded out a couple of times...(he was right on the river), then made and moved to a home made sorta yurt....with a tipi out building.

As you can see the land was for sale, and he has moved on....don't know if he was evicted, or even had permission to stay there....but is gone now.
It seems funny to me seeing a for sale sign posted on the land.....Like..."For Sale, survivalist BOL,.....needs a little TLC."
Any way, this was a guy that lived his own life, off grid, off most everything, for a long time.
I stopped feeling sorry for him when we stopped and asked if he wanted some of our chili we had made for our hunting group....He turned us down saying he was a Vegan... LOL
God Bless him for sticking to his principles.
I actually gave him my old Shasta travel trailer...as all his shelters were falling down.
Just in time, it turns out as he moved the trailer when he moved on.
Haven't seen him in a while.
Lol, that's a pretty good story and good of you to offer the chili and heck, a whole travel trailer... that was very nice indeed! (Folks, tell us about homeless people you have met! :))
Wisconsin would not be my first pick as far as weather. Too cold in the winter, but one thing about places like N. Dakota and Wisconsin and Minnesota, there are a lot more shelters available in sub-freezing weather... people would literally freeze to death on the streets and sometimes do.
So, that's just one reason I highly recommend the PNW, it might rain a lot, but rarely does the temp get in the 20s even and here on the coast we get very little snow.
Also, there are lots of evergreens instead of perennials like back east that shed their leaves and increase your chance of being spotted and reduce the number of plausible campsites.
I thought I would start this thread with the most fundamental things like "place" before we get to things like stealth-camping and Parowax candles and urban and wilderness defense... so it will be in kind of a semblance of order folks- first things first.
As a homeless person one has to make some rather bold choices and sacrifices too... this is the time, more than ever, to start making good, workable, "thought it through" decisions.
Lol, at the homeless forum, of course there are folks from all over the country... a buddy of mine used to say "Damn you Thx, you must be a used car salesman because I'm saving my money to move to ISSAQUAH!"
He was camping in Northern Illinois and was not looking forward to the weather.
And the right place just makes everything easier.
Don't get me wrong though, eventually you get the skill set to live in any town in any region...
But why not do yourself a big favor early on and pick a nice town where the gettin' by is a little easier?
Now... of course folks have family ties, a wife (I am single) might have family ties, community ties, that's fine. (And even better if they will take them in so they will no longer be homeless. lol :rolleyes:)
But... if I have a wife and we are homeless and she has ties to a nasty ghetto, I'm going to do us both a favor and get us to a better place.
People move to get a job or better job, homeless are usually not there because they are working a good job, so for many at first, there is not that tie to the area either.
No, at that point what seems to tie most people to an area is not a job or family, but familiarity... It's always a little scary moving to a place you are not familiar with.
But I bet that person really appreciated the things you did going far above board there, thanks from me too! :)
(One thing... I guess "stealth" was not their first consideration when picking a spot, lol)
(Oh, and before I forget, don't forget about Google Earth! An invaluable tool for the homeless and when picking out some better digs to move to!)

The travel trailer was purchased in 1990, for low money....like $400 bucks, old back then but in pretty good shape.
Figured that it provided shelter, already wired, had a furnace, and bunks, kitchen....and at that amount of money, if it got broke into....it did...I wouldn't be out much.....and satisfied the requirement of a mobile structure.....that fit the covenant of the land.
When we moved up to a cabin, trailer wasn't being used, and slowing going down hill.....so offered it to several that had expressed interest for the same money I paid for it......What a joke!
Everyone turned up their nose at it. or tried to talk me down more....I mean WTF, it was already bottom buck.....One guy even bought a metal shed to stay in, cost more that $400 bucks.....and it collapsed the first winter.
Sooooo, giving it away was my way of tell the ungrateful to hawk off, ...trailer was getting to a new life, and out of my way.

I figured just the fact that everything seems to have moved on.....make any money or problems worth it.
Yeah, that's not a bad looking rig and for the way this person chooses to camp, "right out in the open on private land", the wheels will have to come in handy. :)
Some homeless, a few tend to squat like that: bold as brass and usually not a lot happens to them as far as tickets and the like... usually they are just told to move along and do...
The two elements you especially don't want to attract are kids and cops. Just as a general rule. (Um, even if you are not homeless, lol :rolleyes:)
Most people will not mess with another camper's gear, especially other homeless, there's an unwritten rule...
But kids and cops almost always will in some way, cops will slash your gear to shreds, kids will ransack your camp, steal things, kids might also come back in the middle of the night with friends...
So you really want to keep your spot low-key, many break their camp every morning and stash it in the bushes.. also, many keep several "reserve" camps stashed around town in case their main place is compromised.
Oh, and you will want to stash your gear as soon as possible... don't be Jeremiah Johnson walking around all day with your big frame pack and walking stick, advertising you are homeless... stash that gear AT ONCE!
You don't want cops, kids, potential employers, thugs, shop keepers, personal contacts, potential romantic interests, you don't want this to taint you for the rest of your time in that town... letting the whole town know you are homeless can hinder you in many ways, so don't advertise needlessly or blab it around town either, because tongues will wag and you will not be there to defend yourself... (After you become Mayor you can tell them about your jaded past, lol :))
Now, we'll get into mission life and "urban" camping etc., but let's just say for now you followed my advice and found yourself a little "Issaquah" somewhere. A place that's not too big, but not too small, a place with some services, but not full-blown missions... as close to something like that as you can get, okay...
Almost any land is "spoken for" in some way... either it's private land, city property, county property, state, railroad, power company, metro, federal or reservation land... there is no "free and clear" place to squat indefinitely, (cept maybe the middle of the Mojave Desert) your only hope is to remain undetected... And I've never had a camp ransacked, not once.
Do your initial "scouting" on Google Earth... you can see patches of green that might have been overlooked by you, and others...
I like to be about a 20 minute hike out of town, not so far that if something happened like I got sick that I couldn't get there fairly easily.
Also, being near a creek is nice too, just treat it with respect and don't do laundry in it or something, use a five gallon bucket.
Pick out a spot with reasonable drainage, a place with good evergreen brush all around. (Oh, and watch out for "widow-makers".. trees that might fall in the next wind!)
Pitch your pop tent or whatever, the lower in height the better, those tall canvas tents are not very stealthy, get a smaller tent...
Camo your tent with pieces of cardboard on the sides, then take some tree boughs, turn them upside down and fashion them with string or wire into a "tee-pee" of sorts that covers your tent and looks almost like a small tree. The cardboard is to block light emanating from the tent at night and also to give a more "Earth-tone" coloring to the tent which are so often blue and red etc.
I used to grab a stack of those free tabloids and ironically "apartment finder" magazines and use them on the floor for padding and insulation.
Make sure you look at it in broad daylight, look from a distance and a height if possible too.. you might break your camp every morning, but this is the acid test. It might not be "invisible", but hopefully it's not obvous either. People often don't see what they are not looking for, they can be looking directly at your rig and not actually "see" it. :cool:
Also, be sure to look for signs of other people and other homeless... beer cans, general trash, recent footprints... If I do see trash, I try and date it if possible... is it twenty years old or only twenty days old?
One of the best places is to find a large patch of berry bushes... berry bushes have thorns and grow in an incomprehensible tangle... people will not mess with them unless they are just picking berries on the outskirts of the patch. Use some hand pruning shears to cut an L-shaped path into the middle of the patch... pitch your tent in a small clearing at the end. You want it L-shaped so if someone (kids probably) look down the path they still don't see your camp.
Deer though, will walk right through berry bushes as though it was grass... no kidding. But they will bolt when they sense people. :)
Basically, like anything else, the more effort you are willing to put into it, especially up front when choosing your spot, the more it will pay off accordingly. Train your "squatter's eye" to pick out the places that most overlook because they are not thinking about it's "camp potential".
I used to camp about 300 feet from one of the nicest mansions in Belle Meade Tenn, had a light on at night, camped there for six weeks and never saw a soul.
Now, once you have a nice secure camp, set up another one somewhere else, then another, have at least three stash camps.
And let me reiterate: NEVER squat under bridges or in abandoned houses/ buildings, downtown doorways, never squat somewhere so obvious... these are the first places people who want to do you harm look... also other homeless, you need to be by yourself and tell absolutely no one where your camp is because you can't control who they tell..
From now on, Darkness is your friend! So wear dark and non-reflective clothes and shoes.
The spooky ol' woods keep bad people away, keep "honest men honest" and makes transgressors "work for it" and take some risks too.
We will talk more about camp security and weapons later, (maybe some of the most interesting stuff! :rolleyes:) but know that stealth is your best first security measure!
Oh, and camp fires are the one thing that gets more people busted than anything else: some idiot always insists on making a fire. :rolleyes:
If you need heat try a Sterno stove or a Parowax candle.

As you are going for stealth I can see that, as well as just trying to conceal the light and smoke....to say nothing of some do-gooder, calling in a fire in the middle of the woods.
Makes sense.

Yes, I am familiar with the Dakota fire method, a hole dug into the ground with an extra "breather hole" next to it and breach between.
And, if you really had to have a fire, that would be the way to go. It has much less need for a reflector or maybe "blocker" would be a better term in this application.
But basically, you want to avoid any kind of campfire and in this day of cell phones, like hunter63 says, it's just too risky because of the smoke and smell.
Now, if you were pretty far into the woods, a few hours hike, you might be okay at night with a small, hot fire with a blocker.
There are probably plenty of fire craft threads here at the forum, but one tip I might add is once your fire gets going pretty well, as far along as beginning to make some coals, step on it... crush it into itself to concentrate the heat and get you a nice, hot bed of concentrated coals you can just nurse along easily. And of course strip the bark off the fuel as much as you can to reduce smoke.
But yeah, for the most part fires are more trouble and risk than they are worth and even if you don't have one going at the time, remnants of previous fires will get you a fine or worse.
Fires and trashed out camps, these are the two things that p-off the authorities more than anything else.
In fact, the one time I ever saw an authority figure of any kind in the woods, was the time an old friend named George and I were camping under a huge bridge off of I-90 near Highpoint, the place where the abandoned house was in my story. ) (A mistake, never camp under bridges as stated previously... but anyway)
George, (in his 50s at the time,) George used to burn his trash and put tin cans on top and burned off the tin coating and put them to rust away and return to nature... this he did in a metal drum, not 55 gallon, but maybe 30 gallon that he had made into an oven.
One day he had a pretty good one going under the bridge and maybe 15 minutes later here comes a guy in a fire suit, lol.
First he said "put it out" (please) "but no, that's okay, it's well contained, just don't start anymore okay guys?"
I used to just make a candle out of Parowax that would provide enough heat to take the edge off the inside of your tent and enough light to read by that would last a couple hours a night for a week....

To make one, (George showed me this btw :)) first take out the four rectangles of wax from the box, be careful not to tear the box, you are going to need it...
Then take your jack-knife and scrape along the long edges of each wax rectangle, ("deburring" them) scrape all 16 edges and save the scrapings...
But on one of each of the edges of each rectangle, give that edge a few more scrapes, this is where the wick will go.
Now, carefully place the wax pieces back in the box with the edges that got extra scraping in the center.
Take a strip of paper bag paper (I think almost any paper will work, but paper bag paper works the best, lol) a strip about an inch wide and an inch longer than the candle, roll it up making a wick of sorts bout an eight of an inch thick.
Put the wick down the center of the candle and place the shavings around the top of the wick to catch fuel a little easier, tear off the top box flaps, and you have it.
A $2.50 candle that will last a week.
And, will heat you up a can of something, "hobo-style" in about 20 minutes. (Walt Disney's favorite meal was pork and beans. :))
Just be careful, if you don't trim the sides of the box they have a tendency to catch fire making the candle into a raging torch, lol.
Use in a WELL ventilated space, put a pie pan or something underneath because spilled wax is a menace to camping gear and be careful to keep it away from the sides of your plastic tent, lol. The sides can go up in a gaping hole in a second.
Never leave unattended!
Also, Google "Sterno stove".
But you guys probably knew all that anyway, I just had to put up the disclaimers. :p
Next, we'll talk a bit about homeless missions and services and the "regular" homeless thing.
"Homeless", is just above "in jail" and "dead" as far as most people are concerned... a person facing the streets has probably done everything possible to avoid it and are at the end of their rope and realize what people mean when they talk about "two paychecks away from the street".
It's usually a bit further away than "two paychecks", but that's how soon the whole thing can begin to become unraveled...
When the initial shock wears off they realize that they once heard about homeless people on the news maybe and the idea of missions and soup lines comes to mind... tent cities...

I'm thinking that there is a lot of interest in having a bunch of gear, skills, and knowledge, to fit into the version of "surviving' that a lot of people have in their minds.
This may or may not be correct.....have you ever seen any one walking away from a disaster caring an Molly pack with all the gear?...most likely they are being herded along by who ever happens to be in control.
So is this just the way the news is presented?.....or the fault of not having prepared?.....or is the scenario that all your stuff is destroyed in a flood, tornado, fire, civil unrest, or even a power outage making a lot of activities undoable or at least more difficult.
The ability of being able to fly under the radar, get by using found or made from scrounged materials and supplies is an interesting subject....when all else fails.
Maybe the last few years of the "survival" shows, may have pushed it that way........but the idea of a bunch of people sitting around their fire, cleaning their weapons, and comparing/discussing the perfect knife may not be a true scenario.

Yeah, I have been wondering about things like that myself seeing this turmoil and chaos in Tacloban.
I guess you just have to improvise gear out of the rubble.
(Also, look how many people became "homeless" overnight... I guarantee you lots will never recover easily and are in for years of homelessness.)
What gets me, they are searching for sources of potable water with all that rain coming down on them? Why can't they catch enough to drink?

I am also a prepper in the sense I store drinking water and food etc, but looking at the rubble the storm made out of the place, your preps are going to be buried a block away lol.
I think if I were there my first priority would be to catch water and head along the coast, away from the developed areas so I could fish and take advantage of coastal resources.
(It looks like most are just going to sit there and wait for "relief" to come to them and suffer through it.)
A woman there said security was their primary need and that is such a shame, it probably wouldn't be half as bad if it were not for that.

I guess I would consider that as a Bug Out Situation.....if there was a place to bug out to.....and does make me wonder how many did head for the hills......and how many were already there, ..Lets face it, not a lot of extra room.
We have a big country here for the most part.....I would think it would be much tougher there.
I just thinking out loud, as I'm not sure what I/we would do.....as I'm not there and can't see what options are.
There are both survivors and there are victims......maybe the news doesn't concentrate on survivors?

Basically I was a regular middle-class guy with a good job in high tech.
I was one of millions of guys I guess who bought in to the "Get a high tech career, don't let the future pass you by!"
And it was great for a few years, then of course the whole thing collapsed and I tried for months to find another job in my career field (electronics/machining) and found a couple jobs, but they didn't work out.
(And I never made the kind of money they tak about in the field, my highest wage was $13.50 an hour and I was doing a lot of robotics then.
Eventually I lost my house, my possessions and even my dog Arnold. :(
If I knew then what I knew now I would have taken him with on the road, but I figured it wasn't fair to him and left him with a family in Hacienda Heights.

Eaten alive trying to maintain his place in society, trying to do "the right thing", putting out thousands of dollars here and there, watching agencies fritter his life savings away with fees and fines.
And you know, this is the kind of guy who probably paid his taxes faithfully all his life, yet will feel bad about using "services" like food banks.
Probably he will get back on his feet, having to start from nothing, if he had a crystal ball he would have cashed out and pulled up stakes long before he got whittled down to nothing.
He tried his best to hang on to what he had and lost it all anyway... good money after bad...
So here is a guy that is right on the edge of homelessness, with a kid also...
Hopefully if that happens he will have enough together to get out of Topeka Kansas... they sure haven't done anything for him.

And I do feel some obligation to pass on some experience to help others who are or might one day find themselves "outside". :)
A clueless noob homeless serves no one and are a hazard to themselves and others and give homeless a bad reputation. It makes it harder for all the rest, directly so.
We are going to look at missions and services and the whole "normal" homeless gig, but also in the end I'll put up some ideas for moving beyond being dependent on missions etc. and maybe keep someone from becoming homeless in the first place...

Put it this way, missions are for newbie homeless, should be and generally are a very temporary measure and most people will not come away from that with a good experience...
There are all different kinds of "missions" and some of the smaller ones are probably more livable and sustainable than the big ones downtown. I have stayed in both types, but only on a temporary basis, a week or two at the most, downtown only one night, lol.
I came up to Washington State from Southern Cal. to camp, not to stay in missions etc. :cool:
But before we get to all that, I'm going to post a video I just found that looks at homeless "community" camping. Semi-permanent camps of small groups of homeless.
It can certainly be debated: "Safety in numbers" or "Safety in stealth" better a lone wolf?
Myself, I prefer to be on my own, but I can see where a small community camp can be advantageous, especially for the most vulnerable people like lone women, utter greenhorn homeless, half-wits, etc...
The problem is, that by being a small community they have little in the way of stealth and can attract the very problems: cops and thugs, they are pooling up to avoid... catch 22.
But you will see some folks, like those two next to the construction zone, Leon I think the guy's name was, they had been there for eight years... that has to be some kind of record.
All too often the cops do an annual bulldozing if a community gets too conspicuous, thereby becoming a "problem".
So let's look at the video to see a better alternative to mainstream missions, but still in my opinion not the best...

My first advice to these folks would be to get out of Texas (lol :rolleyes:) if at all possible etc, but of course they might have their reasons for staying where they are and this is a pretty good exercise in making the best you can with what you have. (also, the worst you can given a perfectly good campsite... :rolleyes:)
Myself, I don't want my "camp" to consist of any more than what I can pack in in one load.. so 55 gallon drum stoves, bunches of extra clothes etc, furniture... I'm more into "Leave No Trace". These kinds of camps collect trash and just plain junk you didn't need ("Hoarder Campers: Buried Outside!" :O ) and also start attracting rodents like deer mice.
