About Amazon.com mylar bags

I notice that when you order mylar bags from Amazon.com you get the oxygen absorbers with them. For 34 cents apiece for 1 gallon bags, is it my imagination or is this a really good deal?

Also, what does it mean when it says "Dry-Packs" mylar bags?

Dry pack means you are packing food dry with little or no moisture. In this case it might be a manufacturer's name. Can't help you on the price.

Before determining whether or not it's a good price you need to know the size of the absorbers. Since they are being sent with the gallon bags one might assume one per bag, but best to check anyway.

A 300cc absorber should work OK on tightly packed items. If they are loosely packed you may want more. There is a lot of information out there on what size to use and it is fairly consistent (probably because it is mostly plagiarized). This vid does a nice job of 'splaining things.

The 3.5 mil is thin! They would need to go in buckets after filling. And have soft or smooth food inside the bag, to prevent punctures. Rice,beans, or oats, but not macaroni or spaghetti.

We've been using the "regular" food storage bags from WalMart or other stores. Now even some grocery stores carry them. I've also had problems with tiny punctures, so when you check the bag weeks or months later, the vacuum is gone. What I do now, is wrap the food in a plain paper napkin to pad the points.

For the most part, we use regular vegetables, etc., from the frozen section of the grocery. They've been flashed with steam or something, so they're already pretty well bacteria-free. We put them directly in the dehydrator, and bag them, then store them in the dark. We choose the foods that don't have 9-syllable words in the ingredients. If it says corn, it's corn, IOW. That napkin makes a huge difference, and in a survival situation, I suspect a piece of clean, softish paper will find some kind of use. :nod:

One thing we have found is that dry milk goes yellow and bad after about 2 1/2 years. Might be oxidation. We have not yet used the little dryer packs. Probably a good idea. A few of the vegetable bags from 3 years back have gone off-color, so we don't eat those. Likely the same problem.

What's the virtue of mylar over regular (polyplastic) bags? All will puncture, all can be labeled with a Sharpee. Does one last longer than the other?

Oxidation won't hurt you. You will lose vitamins and probably taste but otherwise will be okay. Rotate your stock so you have stuff stored for less time.
