View Full Version : Hypothetical survival scenario....

For a prize of $400,000. getting dropped 2 weeks walk from civilization in A) Africa, B) Australia or C) Alaska. You may take a .22 rifle with as much ammo you want to lug, a dog (breed of your choice), appropriate clothing and a knife. NO food or water nor map allowed.
Well....?

A .22? In Alaska?
Well, for $400,000 I'd do it. Pretty easily actually. Oh wait, I already did. Where's my money? Oh wait, I did have some food.
Alpinedingo
09-05-2013, 06:32 AM
Exactly...The .22 isn't for protection but for food harvest or maybe intimidation purposes only.
And yes you may have done part of it but I doubt anyone on here, if they're honest, has done it completely....We'll see?
Don't forget to nominate your continent of choice.
Well, you need to better define the scenario. How did I end up here? What is the time of year? Am I alone? Take a look at this:

Africa would be EZ you could trade a clean pair
of socks for a AK47 then have two guns.
you said no food. What do you think the
dog is? What time of year is it? When do i get
the money? Will it be in US currency? What kind
of knife are we talking about? Will it be a pocket
knife or a big ol SURVIVAL knife? Can i bring a goat
instad of a dog? Will a camera crew be with me
or would i film this myself? Do you have the
400,000 in cash or will payment be made with
a check?
Alpinedingo

No, there wouldn't be any trading, your 2 weeks from human contact.
The dog isn't for eating or I wouldn't of bothered with the no food clause.
The money would obviously be in the currency you find most lucrative...or you just wouldn't do it.
Camera crew? You watch too much "discovery"
The knife of your choice...again, otherwise it would of been stated.
For somebody with the word Tripper in their handle you got **** all imagination.
Rick...Lets say some eccentric billionairest got her thrills this way and threw this together as some kind of experiment. And the season would be when the place is at it's most dangerous Eg Alaska, mid winter?...Aust mid Summer.
zeroed4x
09-05-2013, 10:27 AM
Making shelter and a fire can be done as long as you have the knife but without cordage that considerably ups the difficulty level. I hoping that the knife has a fire steel with it.
I see another large problem with this scenario would possibly water storage, unless you are able to store water in some fashion, you've got trouble.
No tin cup to boil water in an arctic environ and no bladder to store it in an arid environ, hmmm
If your in bear and wolf country a dog can be more trouble than companionship. Wolves being territorial, love to kill competition and spot could likely be killed.
Africa would bring many more territorial predators that would smell the dog and also make you a target.
If you are considering the worst case scenario when mother nature is at her worst and without some basic items, this is truly a life and death deal.
Any of these situations would make you religious or possibly more religious.
After a little careful thought, I'd have to pass on this one.

Same, that's not a contest... not even a survival challenge. That's simply a suicide attempt... the only question is whether or not it's a successful one.

So if I just have to survive by sitting on my butt for 2 weeks, I'll take south east Australia in summer and give it a go.
On the beach? Trade the ammo for all the Foster's you can carry, the gun for Bridie Carter, Basa A'Hern or some other Aussie lass and trade the dog for a basket of Violet Crumbles.......or not. I like dogs.

zeroed4x, you can still make fire without a steel although bloody hard work! and what about camp caves? Wouldn't a dog be good for one sacrifice only, like if you stumbled across a bear...better him than you?
Sourdough, you right I know very little about the artic winter, in fact I've never touched snow. I wouldn't last the night in a ultra cold enviroment.
JPGreco, many people have died in the Blue mountains NP of S/E Aust. in a lot less than 2 weeks. If you were to be dropped 2 weeks walk from human contact you'd be in some fairly dry, rugged country.
And for the sake of JPGreco going into hibernation for 2 weeks to collect the cash we'll stipulate you DO have to walk out.

Yes there are many ways including a bow drill, plow etc but when you are talking bout environments you've mentioned, the odds are pretty slim. You've obviously not been in some of these hostile climates. You've most likely never made a bow drill with braided vine strands or attempted to use a fire plow in sub zero 40+ mph wind. A bear or a wolf pack will smell that dog from 10 miles downwind. You might as well make a necklace our of caribou steaks. Chances are that the dog will be eaten first and then you're next, no thanks I'd have to nix the puppy. Without any way to store or transport water you're dead. Without a way to boil or purify water, like in a metal cup, you're dead.
Its not that your scenario is unlikely, its a fact that it is highly unlikely that anyone will survive a scenario like you've provided without having proper resources and slightly more gear. I'm not man enough to want to try this one.

Here's the thing man, we have rules about hypothetical situations. You can't tell me I can't eat the dog and I have to walk out or whatever. The only thing you can say is where and what i have, my actions to survive or die are all my own.
As for people dying in SE australia, well, a lot of people die not far from where I live, a lot of people die all over the world. Some of these people that die are extremely skilled at what they do. Some people who live through the craziest **** are the dumbest people who just happen on a stroke of luck. People have died in areas full or resources and people have lived through some of the harshest areas.
I chose SE Australia in summer based on your parameters. It's a temperate area with mild wet summers. A fire is no problem as I have all the ammunition I could use in 10 lifetimes based on your parameters (absurd as it is), so why walk out when I can bunker down with my warehouse amount of ammunition and just start signal fires all day and night? The only concern is a water source, and again, I chose a temperate wet area, shouldn't be too hard to find.
And now you know why I recommended the template for your scenario. Been through this time and time again.

Alright, fair enough I didn't know about your rules of asking a hypothetical question on here (starting to regret I ever bothered) I just thought I could learn a bit about foriegn climates. So if you wanna eat the dog be my guest BUT if HYPOTHETICALY we are talking about S/E Australia you would be fool to do it. A dog is worth way more to you alive than a couple of nights easy eating. With a .22 catching tucker in Aust is sinch, in fact a lot of it is easy bare handed. A dog (particulary a good Aust cattle dog) will keep you warm at night, keep feral pigs/Dingos out of your camp at night and most importantly, wherever you walk you send the dog first as you'll encounter a snake roughly every half an hour of walking.
Our scrub must be different to yours, most of the time you cant see your feet, it's hard, hot, bushbashing so I'd be REAL carefull about any signal fire you lit...There would be no out running it.

It wouldn't be possible in the INTERIOR of Alaska in the winter. Southeast it may be possible. It's a huge state, with several different climate zones.

It's not a rule, merely a suggestion. If you take a look at the link that Rick gave you it will explain. You will then have more of a chance at gaining the infor mation you seek when you say "I just thought I could learn...".

Alpinedingo
09-06-2013, 07:01 AM
No doubt they could pull a sled but it's a pretty wild animal and hard to domesticate. You have to get them as new borns well before they are weaned and raise them with a firm hand. Even then they like to roam and one day your pet dingo will just be.....gone?
The Aussie cattle dog is the only domestic dog with dingo in it...all the good traits of the dingo but with an undying devotion to their boss, great dogs I recommend you get one, guarantee you won't be disappointed.

The best part is that I can take appropriate clothing for the area and season. That means that I can have fire steel toggles on my jacket. Of course, my knife would have a fire steel with it. In fact, my knife would be a double knife, a large one with a small one on the same sheath. My sheath would also have a button compass. I can have a bunch of cord bracelets on my wrist. A poncho would be clothing for rain, and work as a shelter. I obviously have a pack (for the ammo) and would also put more "appropriate" clothing inside, like extra insulation. Luckily for me, as soon as I get to the site, I find a stainless steel pot that is even clean. And, then I find a water container, like a water bottle of milk jug. These were all left by previous campers. Since I am in an area with an abundant source of water, I just walk along the waterways toward the coast and hunt for game along the way with the rifle.
This reminds me of when my SIL asked me what my favorite mythical creature was. I told her it was the "supermythic". It was all powerful and nothing was more powerful than it. It was also the smartest mythical creature out there. If any creature got close to being more powerful or smart, then it would increase it's strength and wisdom instantly. She then said "you just made that one up, I have never heard of a supermythic". To which I responded "of course I made it up, it is a mythical creatures. By definition they are made up."

I really don't know what the story was on the guy. He was pretty loony and I don't think he had enough on the ball to make a lot of money on his own but he sure was spending some. Either dad had money or he had just won the lotto. If you can picture a guy about 27 with his hat on sideways and his jeans tucked into his boots walking arm in arm with someone like Mila Kuhnis or Jennifer Lawrence and that's about the situation. The FIRST thing we need to do is to get you reacquainted with REALITY.
If ANYthing, Ken does not sell himself short. That's all you need to know about Ken. :shifty:
That's right! I mean.... Never mind.

If I was looking to immerse myself in reality the last thing I'd do was hang around internet forum boards!

Well....?
Alaska, my lab mix Buddy, He doesn't make any noise. My survival knife with matches, and a fishing kit, and a couple of band aides. Start looking for shelter, make a fire, and pray.
If I was looking to immerse myself in reality the last thing I'd do was hang around internet forum boards!
Which is sort of what you're doing here......just sayin'. The good news is this forum is the real deal. The one and only. The harbinger of truth. The last bastion of hope in a world gone mad.

It's EXACTLY what I'm doing here, Rick. If want real life survival I'll check with Bear grills or Yukon men or Mountain men or Ultimate survival Alaska....Now those quality productions wouldn't lie to there loyal viewers, what you see is what you get there.
