How to find fatwood in the wild?

I saw a video about fire building. The guy was walking along a bent over and cut a chunk of fatwood off an old log. This fatwood was actually the portion of an old branch where it came out of the larger log. Probably 3 inches in diameter.
I thought fatwood came from the base of a dead pine tree.
Ok, so where does one look when they are seriously in need of a chunk of fatwood?

I usually find a pine tree that was cut down years ago and follow it to the stump. I poke down into the rotten punk til I hit something solid.

Gee, now that I have used fatwood, if I ever found a stump of it I would haul the whole dang thing home.

I've heard that, because of all the timber/pulpwood cutting from the last century, the eastern seaboard has a huge supply of fatwood ready for the pickin'( or diggin').

My method is the stump kick.

I have found a lot of it while hunting, in Louisiana, in pine plantation, on a deer lease that had been cut over , some time back and replanted.
Many stumps for the last cutting are still there and every once in a while you find a downed tree, or what's left of it....with much of it rotted away.

A kick will tell you if you have struck gold or not.

Caution, be aware of fire ants....a ill timed and placed kick can be very interesting, quick.
Also be aware that lots of stuff you don't want to mess with calls these stomps and logs home...snakes, spiders,.....but mostly fire ants.

Several logs still have evidence of fire damage.....so go figure.

Northern areas , kicking moss covered humps in the forest have turn up some as well......sites of logging in the early 1900's.

Down here you will see dead standing pines and stumps. Gray ghosts in the pinelands that have died but still had the turpentine pumping into them. Easier to harvest are the chunks we find on the trails. They are gray and look like partially buried driftwood. We dig a bit under the bigger ones and pass a rope or sling under it and pull it out with an atv.

One or two decent size pieces will be all that is needed for the night.

You'll learn to tell by tapping or when you pick up a chunk by density. Until then just slice a bit off with your pocket knife or axe and you'll smell the resin.

Up here in the northern states the pines don't produce as much sap, but fatwood still can be found. The southern states have the Georgia Pine, also known as the Longleaf Pine, which produce great amounts of sap. I've found fatwood in all types of pines, some are just better than others.

All of the fatwood I have found, has been dead for a long time, so sorta hard to tell......I would think anything with resin could be reduced to fat wood.

The wood rots, the resin doesn't.

In Delaware we have mostly loblolly pine and white pine.

Sometimes in swamps that is the only wood for a campfire that doesn't need constant tending. We burn a couple of chunks. It burns hot and hisses and the smoke is harsh. Often you can see turpentine flames dripping from the wood.

For instance rachery season we usually get to camp late Friday afternoon. Set camp and then go find wood. This is the height of the wet season and everything that isn't underwater is soaking wet. The oak is a good ride back into the woods if my UTV can make it.

So we just use charcoal to cook on and use lighter knot to burn in our fire. Or if oak is handy but soaked, instead of splitting it down to get to the dryer heart wood. We'll burn it dry with lighter knot.

walk, drive thru pine stands, logged on not , check old stems, sections of trunks, lying on the ground. I use an axe to check it out. It will usually be grey in color from age. You will learn to recognize it and pick up limbs and pieces of it as you travel thru the woods.

If you get caught in a blizzard and need a good fire, find a stump and light it up. There's a lot of heat in those stumps. Most of the old stumps in my area of northeast lower michigan are rotted out in the middle. These stumps can make decent deer blinds and such. Mostly norway and white pine.

The "pinus palustris is" the scientific name for the Long Leaf Pine tree found here in Florida. The stumps and taproots of old trees can reach nine feet in length and become saturated with resin and will not rot. Back in the day, farmers sometimes found old buried stumps in fields, even in some that were cleared a century ago, and these usually are dug up and sold as Fatwood, "fat lighter" or "lighter wood" which is in demand as kindling for fireplaces, wood stoves, and barbecue pits.

In old growth pine the heartwood of the bole is often saturated in the same way. When boards are cut from the fat lighter wood, they are very heavy and will not rot, but back in the early years buildings constructed of them were quite flammable and made extremely hot fires.

An old deadfall can yield alot of fatwood but is difficult to cut without a chainsaw. I worked as an arborist for Davey Tree Company. We were contacted by Florida Power and Light electric company back in the eighties to clear trees to lay power lines. I cut many a pine back then and the stumps are still there as well as trunks that we left lying.

In 1998 our county experienced the worst brush fires that were started by an arsonist. They never caught the perp. He struck again in 2000 but this time the authorities captured him. Thirteen years later those burnt pines still stand in unincorporated acreage. There is fatwood galore in those trees. Today most of those old tall survivors are homes for ospreys.

Here is a pic of a chunk of lighter stump that I found in the scrub where I frequent. The stump stood about 4 1/2' tall and I cut off a 6-8" section of the top. It took me almost 45 mins to saw beause it was almost solid resin, I had to periodically stop to clean the teeth of my Corona saw.

If you ever see someone felling a Pine Tree ask for a slice from the base of the trunk it will be loaded with sap. That is how I got mine and I have enough for a very long time. It was a PITA to split it all but well worth the effort.

As for finding Fat wood in the Wild, it tends to accumulate in the first 12 inches where a branch about the size of your wrist joins the trunk of a Pine Tree.

Otherwise, Ace Hardware sells Fat wood....visit your nearest Ace Hardware Branch in the Wilderness.

Going slightly off track but don't forget that the Pine Sap that forms where the bark is damaged also lights easily and burns well.
Every year I gather Pine Sap and often melt it with wood shavings. (Note: Don't use a good knife for gathering pine sap as it is a PITA to remove from the blade)
Once cool I break it into cubes for my Tinder Box.

In South Ms. its everywhere. Stumps that our grandpas made by cutting pines in Fall, then maybe we would have a long enough cold snap to bring the pine tar to the ground...In the Wild, plenty of stumps, & natural fatwood. Look for long dead rotten pines, knock some bark of(especially around old limbs) it's there.

I bought it at Dicks Outdoors on sale a few years ago. I like it cause it's short and lightweight (12"OL 1.4lbs). I also have a Cold Steel Frontier hawk but it is really bulky with a 22" hickory handle. I carry my SOG instead. The holes in the head make for better grip for me when carving feathersticks. I have small hands and this hawk is built for me. YMMV....
