I've often commented that I have back-ups for the back-ups that I have for my back-ups. Once again, I'm glad I do.

I'm typing this on my i-Phone because my home internet computer died yesterday. The other computer I have at home - for office work only - NEVER goes online except for court filings. In fact, that one spends 99% of the time physically disconnected from the web - no wireless connections on that one, either.

I had every reason in the world to rely on my internet computer. It was custom built with high-end security and heavy-duty everything - power supply and surge protection, dual fans, 2 - 2Tb partitioned and isolated hard drives, 8 Gb ram, and an external 2 Tb mirrored hard drive. Redundant inside and out. No reason to think that both of the internal drives would fail on the same day.

Well, both internal hard drives failed yesterday. They are junk, with almost 4 years left on their "heavy-duty" warranties. Multuple redundancy paid off once again. My mirrored external drive is in perfect condition. Every single program, favorite, document, photo, and song is safe and sound, ready to be reloaded on the new hard drives when they arrive at the repair shop next week. In addition to the external drive, I have 99% of the data saved on 5 separate thumb drives - one at home, one at the office, one in my safety deposit box, and 2 in the BOBS. (I have even more secure redundancy on both my office system and my home-office computer, LOL.)

Anyway, another lesson - "reaffirmation" is probably a better word - why redundancy is so important.

Typing on an i-phone - even with voice recognition - is a pain in the azz. So, I'll be scarce around here for a week or so. Not gone, but scarce. Think of it as me giving all of you a short vacation. Don't miss me too much, Sarge!

Yeah, well, it paid off on my last crash a couple of week ago....most all files backed up....could never copy the favorites and such though.
I beginning to think these lap tops are Bic's......used them a year and toss them....I not keeping much of anything on the hard drive, depending on thumb drives these days.

Could have called the NSA to get my files and passwords back.......LOL....THIS IS A JOKE, NSA.

If you don't think you had reason to imagine both of your drives failing at once, consider that half the things which could cause hard drive failure could cause every drive attached to the same bus to fail at once.

two pieces of equipment are not quite redundant if they are connected to the same point of failure.

Canid, don't get me wrong - I knew it could happen. A malfunction - like a fire - in the power supply or a fan would easily do that. However, I've owned a computer for over 30 years and have never experienced a problem like that. Therefore, it was, IMHO, reasonable to think that it wouldn't happen. Nonetheless, expectation and awareness of a possibility are two different things, and that's why I had the external drive, physically connected to the computer ONLY when I updated the back-up, and the thumb drives. THAT is WHY I have so much redundancy. Possibility, not probability.

I never worry about the computer. If it dies, I start over. I only use it for entertainment anyway. Anything important is on old fashioned paper.

I'm kinda the same way Ken...... I have back ups for backups and the backups go in my gun safe which is dead bolted into my concrete foundation. I also secure everything with a Level 7 encryption system.

*sniff* It's still in the i-Hospital. I visited yesterday and brought my box of disks and product key codes so that my software can all be loaded on the new drives. The drives haven't come in yet.

it looked so sad just sitting there all naked with the side panel off. It made me so depressed that I drove over to the gun shop hoping to cheer up a bit. All I bought was some ammo, but there was a Sig 9mm that caught my eye. It looked so lonely sitting there next to all of those Glocks.

I'm thinking about going on a rescue mission.....
