Is it safe to eat fish from an irrigation canal?

I live in a heavily agriculturalized region and often fish irrigation canals. I know some people eat the fish they catch out of these canals but was wondering if farm chemicals (pesticides, herbicides etc. which I'm sure are present in the water) are present in the meat of the fish? Does the fish's liver remove these toxins? I've never heard of anyone dying from eating canal fish but also never heard that it is definently safe so my question is, can one safely eat fish caught in water tainted by chemicals/heavy metals?

To answer your question - fish from contaminated water are likely to be contaminated. It might be worth it to take a water sample and have it tested if you are unsure of the water quality.

No, the fish liver doesn't remove the toxins, they collect there.
And no, it's definitely NOT safe to eat fish caught in chemically polluted waters.

That depends. You have no idea what the water contains so you have no idea what the fish may or may not have ingested. Nearly every state does fresh water fish sampling to determine what waters are safe to eat out of, which are precautionary and which should be avoided. Here is the state of California's. Since you are in irrigation canals I would look for the source. If you can't find the answer from this then I would look elsewhere to fish.

Off hand I would say no........we have to be careful in our local rivers, and streams as well as Lake Michigan.....for mercury, PBC's and other pollutants that have built up on river beds, harbors and so forth over the years.

The state even has pamphlets and instructions to eat only parts of fish, amount of intake....besides testing regularly.

If you are not sure...not worth it.

Federal EPA issues advisories regularly for state fish on inland bodies of water. State "EPA" (sometimes called DNR, or "EP" agencies) also test and issue fish advisories. IN 15+ years of practice as an environmental attorney, I have never found an irrigation canal NOT contaminated with some herbicide, pesticide, heavy metal(s) or PCBs of some sort. Truly, no matter how convenient it is for you, fish elsewhere. Fish bioaccumulate - here is a simple explanation from the Donna Irrigation System in Texas just to explain it better than I can

PCB's [and most pesticides/herbicides] are capable of bioaccumulating in fish tissue at a rate of
31,000 times the level in surrounding water. The consistency of
PCB's is similar to that of mineral oil, therefore they are
rarely found in water and readily settle out to sediments below,
where they may remain with a half life of approximately 4 years.
The insolubility of PCB's in water helps to prevent contamination
of drinking water supplies. Because PCB's strongly adhere to
soil particles, leaching from soil to plants and vegetables does
not occur. Fish are the best indicator of PCB's in the

However, if your canal is local and tiny, it will not likely be listed with the Feds. Call your state EPA and ask. Call the county "conservation" or land department and ask. They work for you; keep asking till you get to the right person which may very well be the person who regulates the pesticide usage or issues the permits for spraying in your county.

Remember, contaminated fish are particularly harmful to women as some mimic endocrine disruptors and affect their reproductive organs, and children (affects brains).

I live in Kings County California and yes it is a small local canal which I wouldnt imagine would be listed in the EPA database.


And no, it's definitely NOT safe to eat fish caught in chemically polluted waters.
I dont personally eat these fish, I just fish here because its convenient (less than 5 mins from my house) and fun! Only catch and release for me. I was mostly curious because in the event of a food shortage or some other disaster this could have been a potential food source within walking distance and also because I know of people that eat these probably contaminated fish.

Ask your county what tests on the canal show. They should be able to tell what metals and/or chemicals are in the canals. I would think they are watched closely if they are used for irrigation or fresh water for towns. Anything in the water would be moved right into agriculture. You might have an irrigation district that governs the canals. If so, they will be able to tell you.

My uncle had a canal behind his home in Fresno. The water was unbelievably pure. It was fed by snow runoff in the mountains and the basin was a protected watershed. So you might have a good place to fish. You won't know until you ask.

The problem with irrigation canals is that so many people dump garbage in them that there is no telling what you are getting. In our area meth chemicals and other garbage is routinely dumped in them including couches, major appliances, misc furniture, clothing, household chemicals, and other junk. Even cars are often found in the larger ones.

Since we do not have irrigation canals like these, i asked a friend out of state about eating the fish out of them, his answer was, " about as safe as eating the corn out of your septic tank" so by his answer I'm saying No it isn't safe!

Internet service was down for a few days so this update has been delayed a bit, however I did get in touch with someone from the irrigation dept. Apparently the water supplied to the area that I most frequently fish comes directly from the Kings River and is for the most part 'clean'. The guy i talked to said he wouldnt have a problem eating fish from that area but that the further west you go the water gets much worse. So it seems that, should the need arise, this canal could be a source of food.

Think about this! If it's not safe to eat fish from an irrigation canal, is it safe to eat crops that are irrigated by these canals? pollutants from these waters end up in our crops and the end product is sitting in your cupboards! food for thought...

I live in Kings County California and yes it is a small local canal which I wouldnt imagine would be listed in the EPA database.


I dont personally eat these fish, I just fish here because its convenient (less than 5 mins from my house) and fun! Only catch and release for me. I was mostly curious because in the event of a food shortage or some other disaster this could have been a potential food source within walking distance and also because I know of people that eat these probably contaminated fish.

I’d be careful with that. Irrigation canals can carry runoff from farms, chemicals, and bacteria, so fish from there might not be the safest to eat unless the water quality is regularly tested. It really depends on the source and how clean the canal is.
