“When I left there, it’s been bugging me for weeks now, why IRS agents are training with a semi-automatic rifle AR-15, which has stand-off capability,” (Congressman Jeff) Duncan told POLITICO. “Are Americans that much of a target that you need that kind of capability?”

Actually, I don't see the problem. The U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration overseas the IRS including the safety of it's agents. They do and can provide armed escort to their agents when a threat has been made against either the agent or the IRS. There have been plenty of examples of those threats too that have lead to arrests and convictions. They are also a part of the government's Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Remember, they face groups like the Sovereign Citizens Movement and the Juris Christian Assembly. Anyone remember the burning of the IRS office in Colorado Springs? Anyone remember the Alaska couple that was convicted of conspiring to kill IRS agents last year?

That they were training in the proper use of any weapon seems like a good thing to me.

Yes, under current modus operendi (Ken check spelling), the individuals do need to defend themselves (kind of like -------- me?). If congress ever gave up the social engineering and lobbyist satisfying tax code with a simple consumption tax, would they need the agents let alone weapons?

In all seriousness though, there are some who would argue that sales tax eliminates the graduated tax bracket system in a way that could be harmful. Set the tax high enough to actually get some heavy revenues, and it will be nominally too high for the poor and middle class. Set it comfortably low enough so that the poor and middle class can have buying power, and overall tax revenue won't be big enough, because our government runs on the mega-taxes of the mega-bucks high-earners, and it would be tantamount to a gigantic tax cut to everything, setting budget deficits off way worse than they are now.

Some would say that setting it high isn't a problem, as a 30-60% sales tax makes sense if there is no income tax, but again, for those who earn less than $40,000 a year, or heck, even less than $100,000 a year, they are going to feel it a lot more than the high earners.

Taxation in general is hairy business. Everyone agrees that tax code ought to be short and simple and comprehensive, but everyones' system will end up being a complex mess once they consider all the facets of effective taxation.

I am sick and tired of watching government piss through money like it's water. We give it away to our foreign enemies by the truckload. We subsidize corporations (and their stockholders) to pay for their bad business practices. We spend billions to fund highly speculative low-success-probability private ventures that pay incredible salaries before they almost inevitably fail. We hand out unfathomable sums to non-citizens living among us. We have established a new elite class of government employees who enjoy salaries, job security, and benefits - particularly retirement benefits - that most of us cannot begin to afford for ourselves. If it lives, breathes, or merely exists, the government either taxes it to death or subsidizes it.

Enough already. Slash the damn budget to the bone. Start paying off our debt. Honor our commitments to people who have paid their dues (veterans, social security recipients, the truly disabled, etc.) but let the parasites among us either get a job or starve.

Really? Don't we have organizations to handle those things? Local Sheriffs, local police dept's, the F.B.I., Homeland Security, etc., etc.. Maybe they should get restraining orders out on people who threaten them. That's what the Gov't tells common folk to do.
