In light of all the problems now being disclosed about some programs and policies within our federal government, we may very well be at a pivotal political crossroad. Where the arrogance of public officials and government employees who give misleading testimony or refuse to testify in proceedings to determine the facts have become the new norm. If we fail to unite with one voice to say:
"Fire and imprison those who abuse administrative oversight for political oppression. Investigate, prosecute and replace if necessary our Attorney General if he's found guilty of criminal acts. End clandestine programs which collect and indefinitely store the electronic communications between private US citizens who aren't suspected of any specific crime. No person or official should be in a position to suspend the rights of any American without due process and only when done in full view of a free press. Stop the militarization of the DHS, they're a law enforcement agency not an army. Restore the sanctity of our Constitution, it is not a document of convenience only to be followed when it doesn't interfere with some agenda, it is the supreme law of the land. If our SCOTUS doesn't defend the constitution from attack by either the Administration or Congress, we should establish the process and means to recall and replace them."
Either the power to govern comes from the consent of the free people of a nation or they are the property of the state and exist without these rights or freedom. Do I want to attract greater governmental scrutiny for standing on my principals? No, but I don't want to see this nation fall into a fascist regime where I am forever stripped of my freedoms either. It may now be time to take a stand. Shoulder to shoulder with the likes of an Edward Snowden or any other whistle blower who dares to step forward and shed some light on the illegal acts being committed in the name of "national security". Time to separate the men from the boys!

I have never understood where some of you get the impression that this pattern is new. The only thing I can see changed since the previous couple of generations, and in fact back far further, is the level of the technology available with which to do it.

How quickly we forget the McCarthy era.
I completely agree, Canid. However, that level of technology now makes government oversight on its citizens incredibly easy and complete. They not only know where you have been but can now predict with a high level of certainity where you will be in the future on any given date and time...based on past activity; Predictive Modeling. They know what you purchase, who you call, what you email and any other mundane topic they might be interested in. That is simply not right.

Well today is your day! The ball is clearly in our court. What we do with the opportunity remains to be seen.
At the rate these signatures are accruing, and by published policy, the White House will be compelled to issue an official response to this petition within days. That should be an interesting release!
Write, call and email your elected representatives and tell them to put an end to this nonsense. I'd rather take my chances with the terrorists. I won't get in quite so much trouble shooting them. At least I might see daylight again.

I'm not drawing a conclusion from my inference of what B may have meant. You are doing that.
The double standard comes in when you defend your meaning from a potential inference thereof, but fail to extend the same consideration to B's.
Unless she chimes in, her meaning and your inference of it are separate. As in the broader situation, it's possible that a conclusion is premature, and it's ok to allow for that.

There is more to this issue than meets the eye. There's also more to Snowden than meets the eye. Additionally, the fact that there are all these "strange bedfellows" in support or against him just makes me want to find out much more. There is nothing wrong with doing your own investigation and drawing your own conclusions. I wish more folks would do that.

Two "disclosures," or should I say "verifications of what we've suspected for a very long time," concern me. The first is that the government can track my whereabouts through my cell phone, without even contacting my carrier. The second is that the government has a system in place that has allowed it to intercept, store, and, if it chooses to do so, read confidential client e-mail to and from my law office, without the necessity of a search warrant.
I don't give a damn what the President or Holder or the NSA or Congress or the secret courts have to say about the matter. I have the credentials and a license that gives ME the authority to render opinions on legal matters, and regardless of how they attempt to justify or explain their actions, I'm going on record here and now and state unequivocally with 100% confidence that such acts are unconstitutional violations of the Fourth Amendment.
The three branches of government, regardless of whether their intentions are pure or evil, have combined their efforts to secretly deprive the public of its Constitutional protections. And that is enough for me to say that we are seeing our nation being transformed into a police state.
And on top of that, we've seen martial law imposed in Massachusetts, we've seen criminal activity in the IRS, we've seen criminal conspiracy in the form of Fast and Furious, we've seen the unprecedented unconstitutional imposition of Obamacare, we've seen the Benghazi cover-up, we've seen an assault on the Second Amendment, we've seen unconstitutional attacks on freedom of the press (including a knowingly false affidavit filed with the courts in the case of FOX News), and we've seen so many other government excesses in the last few years that I AM CONVINCED THAT GOVERNMENT IS SIMPLY OUT OF CONTROL IN OUR NATION.

What the fed is currently doing is tantamount in effect to walking into our post offices, private corriers and in cases our homes, making copies of everything they can manage and then assuring us that it's ok, because nobody will actually read or interpret most of it until the flimsiest pretense of probable cause is met.

More to the story...HMMMM... could there be a conspricy behind this.... Could Snowden be taking the fall for someone else, is it all fake and the GOV cant or wouldnt do any of the things he says there doing... And then only if those international communications contain some keyword or catch phrase that would warrant further investigation. Very noble of them. Unfortunately, they don't have my permission to gather or mine anything of mine. If they need to do so let them get a search warrant from a legitimate court.
And their assertion that no privacy is violated has no relevance. Will they violate that too if they deem it necessary? Will they violate that as well if newer technology allows them to do so? Where is the line in the sand that government can not cross? It's seems to be blowing with the wind.

One Yottabyte (the reported memory capacity at the UDC ~ could be much higher) of memory if printed into 8-1/2 X 11" documents would create a pile of paper high enough to reach to the moon and back. Sixty-six million times!
Why would anyone conceivably need that kind of storage capacity? You can bet your sweet arse that they're sucking electronic information out from any crooks, crannies and crevices with the force of an EF5 tornado.

I can understand the reluctance of someone to associate themselves with this list for fear of retribution or until more is understood about the motivation of Edward Snowden. I prefer to focus on the fact that so many have overcome these concerns and basically said "count me in!"

1) Any motive which was primarily intended to aid and abet an enemy of the state.
2) Any motive with the intention of receiving compensation, consideration, favor, benefit, or personal gain in any form as a direct result of his actions.

So all the gov has to say is Snowden is working for the terrorists and bang he is guilty because they said so? And we all know how people believe everything they read about the gov. and that makes them justified for spying on US?
Im thinking giving up a good six figure a year job to bring to light a bad situation may deserve some compensation.

If his aid to an enemy of state was incidental to the whistle-blowing act, I don't think it should be held against him. He is treading on a very fine line between that of a hero or a traitor. IMHO, there is no doubt that this information needed to be made public. On the surface it appears his intentions were quite noble, but alas he did fly to a Chinese territory to seek asylum (possibly with sensitive documents or data). One thing that sticks out in my mind is,That this system is only to catch terrorists right, well it failed miserably at the Boston marathon. Oh wait this is only to spy on foreign communications outside the USA . so if your a terrorist and are already here the system wont catch them, is that about right ?
It didn't stop Benghazi either so if you're a terrorist and abroad it doesn't seem to work either.
