Cloud computing is nothing new and goes back to the very early days of personal computers. I remember a pretty credible argument (but can't remember the author) that you flip a switch and have lights. You don't need to know how to generate electricity or anything about transmission. The same should be true of personal computers. Back in the day, 1980s, personal computers were slow, had no storage and you had to have a pretty good understanding of how they work just to keep them running or add anything to them. Cloud computing removed those obstacles and more. Except for the fact that Gates had nearly unlimited power and fully unlimited resources we probably would have gone with that model. Gates ensured we did not.

There are a lot of problems we would not be looking at today had we gone with cloud computing. Hacked and hijacked personal computers, malware, adware, and junk mail would probably not exist or be very minimal. And understanding that government has the capability to see everything you do online. Everything. I don't see the downside to cloud computing. To think that personal computers are some protection from government oversight or tampering is a little short sighted. Given that personal computer manufacturers can and have monitored your every key stroke renders null the argument that big business could control the web. They do already.

I found out recently that every CD and mp3 I have purchased from Amazon dot com is stored on their cloud or my cloud or somebody's cloud. I can download them or listen to tracks with the Cloud Player.
I think everything else I own is on external drives at my home. That's all the online storage I have, hopefully.
I'm flabergasted that Richard Stallman and Larry Ellison can agree on anything. Stallman is a progressive fellow who designed the GNU operating system (a unix-like OS which Linux left in a pile of dust) and is the only person who uses it. Larry Ellison owns Oracle and Solaris , a version of unix that Stallman detests, I imagine.
