If anyone owns or has used a Tops M4X, please give me any info about it. It looks like an awesome brute of a knife, but I know looks aren't everything. I'm not familiar with Tops knives at all. The M4X goes for about $180 on e-bay or amazon. I'd just like to get a rating on it before I buy.

Before the late Ron Hood came out with his "Hoodlum," he used the TOPS Anaconda 9...in the Amazonian jungle! Both Joe Teti and Mykel Hawke have used TOPS to make their brand of knives. Very well made and very strong. I wish you'd included a link, I could have maybe been a bit more help....:cool2:

I think the best TOPS knife made was the Anaconda 9 designed by the late Ron Hood. Note that you can buy one from Amazon:

Opinions on knives vary. TOPS knives, IMO, are too thick, have the wrong grind, and are too expensive for what they are.

The one I owned was promptly sent away from me. It was the opposite of what I need in a knife.

The Anaconda 9 looks good to me, but I don't have as much interest in that MX4... a little too "tacticool" for my liking. Plus, any time a tool is marketed as something + crowbar, it often means it's a very good something but a terrible crowbar, or the opposite thereof. I don't want a knife that's a good crowbar, because it's probably too thick to suit my knife needs, and I don't see much point in having a crow-knife anyways. Better to just have a real crowbar.

Biggest detractors though? No clip, drop, or spear point. I want my knife to be good for poking, not just slicing or hacking. Then again, you can always have multiple knives for different purposes, but for a "general purpose" I prefer to have a point.

Man, that's a lot of knife. I had a thing for big knives for a while, until I decided I didn't like to carry them.

Have you thought about making your own knives? I have a simple charcoal forge and buy flat steel stock on Amazon.com for nothing (1095 steel). That, a Harbor Freight belt sander and an angle grinder and you can try out any size/shape you like.

I've always preferred big knives over small. A big knife can do everything a small knife can, but a small knife can't do everything a big knife can. You made good point, GreatU., yes I agree with you that NO knife should be,"+ something". If you need that particular "something", get that particular "something".

This is one of those sound bites that sounds good, BUT is 101% NOT true. (Having skinned a fleshed several hundred Bears, Moose, Mt. Goats, Sheep, Caribou, Wolves, Etc.)

I have to agree with Sourdough here. For example, one of our members who is an Alaskan guide, quartered a Moose with a Mora 2000 knife that sports a 4" or 5" blade.....:cool2:

Looks like an awesome knife. It isn't a really good combat knife shape, nor is it a good bushcraft knife shape. It can probably cut carrots really well though.

I look at it like this. When your on a job site and see a guy pull out some combo tool that was advertised as a do all. You already know it does none of those tasks as well as a dedicated tool. It also says a lot about that persons knowledge.

I think you could apply that same mind set to large knives like these. Could you perform the tasks that you would normally use an axe, hatchet, machete, butchers knife, skinning knife, etc...? Probably could get by with it in a somewhat passable fashion.

But, would you really want to skin something with that big of a blade? I would also think you would fatigue your arm and wrist a lot quicker trying to perform detailed work with that thing.

I'd look at buying a couple of different edged tools as you see the need.

Over many years hunting, camping, hiking, exploring out in the boonies in quite a few different topgraphical areas and weather conditions, I long ago came to realize that for my needs, a good fixed blade knife with a 4 inch blade is best for me.

If I want to do some chopping, I'll use my hatchet or axe, and if they are not appropriate for the situation, I'll use my bow saw. I've found too that it's less time and energy consuming to just throw logs on the fire and push them in as they burn, than chopping and sawing, etc. I'm kinda lazy, of course, and would rather relax than sweat and work. :laugh:

These three have worked for me for a long, long time. Top is a Bill Buchman forged custom I had him make in 1982. Second is my old Camillus Stockman. It is always in my pocket.Third is a gerber A475 I bought around 1975.

As for the benefits of having either a big knife or a smaller one, there's a good reason why the Becker Combat Bowie includes a little knife in it's own little sheath riding piggy-back on the larger one! Also, I'm with Seniorman on using the fire to cut logs as opposed to wasting energy chopping if'n I don't absolutely have to. And if I have to then it's a saw or an ax!...:cool2:

I carry a leatherman. Its a pinch tool though. I use it for opening cans and putting things into coals and out of coals.

And yes, 95% of the time we burn our wood into smaller pieces. We use and axe or maul to split wood down when needed and a chainsaw when we find a big ole chunk of oak that needs to be transported to camp.

yup those are nice knives. The stockman is nice, very handy knife in my opinion. When I was a lad near everybody carried a stockman for a utility knife.

In my humble opinion, and it's just mine... It's a big bulky over priced piece of steel. Not really suited for camp work, not really good for survival unless it's all you have, horrible as a fighting knife. But if for some reason you like it, then get what you like. Although to me it's a movie prop replica for movie prop collectors.
