View Full Version : Living in the Wild Alone

Life is pretty stressful and there's been times when I wished I could go live in the wilderness, where dealing with other humans would not be a problem! And I've always considered living out of society, alone. I'd like to go live in the forests of Oregon, Idaho, or Montana. Is it illegal to live in a national forest? Do you think I'm crazy for even considering life alone in the wilderness for an extended period of time? I know it would be hard. But I can take that. Also, I've always wondered, what do you do in a survival situation if you have a cavity? lol...

Yes, it is illegal to camp in the National Forests for more than 14 days.
If you have a cavity, return to town and see your dentist. He'll fix you up.

haha okay, thanks. If I can't live in a national forest, where can I go? And, also, is the idea of living alone for long periods of time in the forest ludicrous? Thank you for your time :)

You can go to any piece of land that you own. Otherwise, you are squatting on someone else's piece of land. But wanting to run off to the wilderness is not uncommon. We get several of your type here. But when we point out that you need to buy your own piece of property, you leave. So, sorry if it's not what you want to hear. Many of us do understand wanting to get away from it all and live in the wilderness.

I found this out a few weeks ago for someone else who wanted to live away from civilisation. https://sites.google.com/a/theshawneenationalforest.com/national-forest/home/national-forest-camping-rules
A simple google and the info is there.

I like Sourdough's thread on this subject:
Why "They" want to move to Wilderness, My answer (http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?18884-Why-quot-They-quot-want-to-move-to-Wilderness-My-answer&highlight=living+wilderness)
"Going to the Wilderness" threads are supposed to be posted on tuesday but I guess the holiday scooted that up a day.
Good luck with that!

Read my answers in red.
Life is pretty stressful and there's been times when I wished I could go live in the wilderness, where dealing with other humans would not be a problem!
Then why are you interacting with us?
And I've always considered living out of society, alone.
"No man is an Island unto himself." You will need a constant supply of food, water, medical needs, permanent shelter, and yes, even companionship.
I'd like to go live in the forests of Oregon, Idaho, or Montana. Is it illegal to live in a national forest?
Yes.
Do you think I'm crazy for even considering life alone in the wilderness for an extended period of time?
No, you just have never learned how to interact with society.
I know it would be hard. But I can take that.
Really? How do you know if you've never done it before?
Also, I've always wondered, what do you do in a survival situation if you have a cavity? lol..
What do you do if you get a compound fracture of your leg? What if you puncture a femoral artery? A toothache would be the least of your worries.
Oh, btw, good luck with that.....:cool2:

I have often wondered why the idea of RWTTW (Running away to the wilderness) is so appealing?.....
Life that bad?....at least you have internet access, that means a phone, computer....that runs on electricity, most likely inside somewhere....have the time to think this up....tells me you are not hungry....or you would looking for something to eat, or drink.
So, if life is driving you to the wilderness....remember you will have none of these things provided for you...you will be on your own.
How do you propose to get by?...shelter, water, food?......and medical,.... since you brought it up?
Has been done.....so Good luck with that.

Find a nice small town and make it work. I live in the "Downtown" area of Sunrise, Alaska (a old gold town). Population: 12 humans in the winter and 14 humans in the summer. However I never see any of them, some I have only seen once or twice in the last twelve years. My nearest neighbor I have only seen once, in the last 14 years. We are in the Chugach National Forest, and the only one time most of us have gathered was at a meeting where-in the CNF wanted our opinion on their long range plans. Good luck in your quest.

In addition to the other videos, you should go here for a REALISTIC read of just what a young man who went to Alaska, had to have to barely get by for a winter, trapping, and living alone in a rough cabin. He had no intention of just "living alone in the wild," and eating grubs and drinking pine needle tea, but he still had a rough, rough time.
Here's the reality of "going it alone."

I usually shake my head when I read the first post in threads like this. Most of these people sound like they can't organize a one-car parade down their driveways. Others need instructions and a 10" survival knife to tear off a Band-Aid wrapper. I suggest that they all strap a 300 lb. pack filled with the most important essentials they can think of onto their backs and head off as far as they can into the wild. That way, they'll never lose sight of their cars. These are the people we read about that get lost in a municipal park and need to be rescued. Yeah, I'm shaking my head.

If we're honest, we'll admit that living out in the wilderness does have a certain romanticism about it. At the same time, like most things, reality would be harsher. It's still doable, however.
At the same time, why anyone would choose to do such a thing in a dark, frozen place like Alaska is beyond me. The fact that seems somewhat common (as far as people who do go out alone into the wilderness is common) is even more confusing. Do you know there are indigenous peoples living in tropical climes at this present day that work as little as 4-6 hours a day to meet their every need?
I read this in a national geographic, I'm having trouble finding a link.

Haven't been there have you? Did you know that Alaska has the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world?

I can point out some places on the near north side of Indy where folks work 0 hours per day and still meet their every need. Just sayin'......

Everybody has their opinion on this. There are the doubters, the haters, the believers and skeptics etc... Do what you must and let experience be your guide. only you can find what your looking for and nobody else can tell you what it is or how to find it. throughout history men have found contempt for society and walked away. today we read their stories and books with much adoration yet- they will tell you not to do it, or that it can't be done today and they are right! it can't be done today except for the very very few who would try. So- do what you will...

I understand how you feel. I'm not much of a people person. Maybe I expect to much out of them. I can easily become disappointed in others. That said I think the best way to get away would be to buy some land, build shelter no bigger that what you need and well insolated. Build it as far back off the road as possible. Fence in the property and only leave when you have to. You would still stay busy working hard everyday to survive. Feeding yourself and staying warm will be hard work.

your saying it cant be done??? i have to STRONGLY disagree with that. it can be done and be done simply and effectively.
I'm guessing you answer is in the theoretical since you haven't actually done this before. It might have been better worded, "I THINK it can be done....."

well no i never really done this completely without the help of others but i have camped out for weeks in various places around the country sence i was 14 on hunting trips with my father. where we killed and foraged for our food the whole time seeing as we were miles and miles and miles from any substantial city or town. so yes i am saying this CAN be done not i think it could be my experience says it all. but i guess coming from someone who doubts there own skills and potential could only think something can be. but from someone with tons of experience and the resources and skills to pull it off then they know it can be done.

Seriously, a couple weekends camping with daddy makes you an expert!!!! Did you hike in to camp them miles, and miles and miles. I bet ya didnt, so that means you had a vehicle there and could leave if the SHTF!!! If you would have taken the time to research the forum and how many times this subject has come up, you would understand why people get the responses they get. of all the years ive been on this forum I can only think of one member that said he was going to do something like this and did it, and proved it.

But i'm guessing you want to do this Primitive style, meaning bare essentials, and no comms. Do take a paper and pen at the least. i'm sure you will want to write some notes along the way. If you need any help on what to write refer to the notes of Christopher McCandless.

Maybe we should contact , A&E channel ( or what ever the channel is that does the survival shows) and give them , livewildandfree , nativedude, and green anaconda dude , info so they can make a show. they can name the show living alone, but together, a show of three survival experts, or as the WSF members have named them the NUMPTY"S. Im think it would be the only show that you would get to see , three things, IDIOTS in a forest, A lots of laughs, and the natural process of removing wasted DNA! altho it would be a short series!

Crap! I totally forgot Blade! livewildandfree would probably tick Blade off so bad that he'd whip out that big knife and cut up Live's tires! Then LWAF would put a green Anaconda in Blade's sleeping bag while singing the "Green Anaconda song." He'd of also stole Blade's Busse Battle Mistress and Blade would become din-din for the Anaconda, so the following week he's replaced on the show with Howie Britain, Katana in hand, fresh from "the wall of god!" I'd watch it, it'd be better than Bear Grylls!...:thumbup1:

Man I need to work less and login more! I miss all the fun on these boards.
Question... have y'all ever considered pooling some funds and buying several hundred acres of the harshest, nastiest terrain in N.A. and then directing all these types there?
Bet you'd end up with some real interesting Hunger Games action after 3 or 4 folks arrive with their big knives and 200 yd accurate bows.

We would have to chage a small fee, ( squatters fee ) to make it profitable! And we would need cameras all over the property so we could make survival movies called, "survival, what not to do".

Ya know WT you might be on to something there, wonder what we could charge someone to get there 30 somthing son out of there basement, or that know it all in law, or that PITA spouse. we could make a killing.

Honestly what difference does it make? I've been on this site for a whopping two days and my first introduction to the site was you submitting two links asking me to fill out a questionnaire and another guy calling me a spammer. I personally think a few of you (obviously I'm speaking in generality here) need to lighten the hell up. If the fella wants to get away from it all and you don't like it just move on. I hope he goes and camps his little heart out in the middle of whatever woods he deems suitable for however longs he wants. Sheesh.

In your very first post you asked for "suggestions, ideas, etc." So I was kind enough to give you a link to another thread about the very same topic you posted on.
The second link was to our Introductions section. Another kindness, since many new members don't know it exists.
And you, as a newcomer here, with FIVE posts, now have the balls to tell ME to lighten up?

Neither will I. Your ape avatar says it all. You have a rotten attitude, and I don't give you long here unless that attitude changes. You've been here for two days and you're already getting confrontational with longstanding members. You'd best find yourself a good therapist before you play your games here. You're out of your league.

Sorry folks, I agree with SLVRBK on this one. You "longstanding members" are always trying to boost your internet egos by belittling others that maybe are less skilled than yourselves. Get off your high horses and show a little humility for a change.

Gambling

Okay. Let's agree to disagree. It's against the rules to attack other members. If a thread is contrary to what you believe then don't go to it. If a member is bothersome to you put them on ignore. Pretty simple.

Roger that. I will make it a priority, I'll even take my "ape" avatar with me. As far as me being out of my league, I've been to 31 countries and 6 continents and haven't found a man I'm scared of yet. Keep bullying people like "Mattius" but keep your little booger pickers off me. Have a good night, you've wasted enough of my time.
