Our ongoing series has one goal.......to get more people participating in activities that are fun, will help broaden their own skill sets and to encourage others to participate. Even some of us older folks can have some fun. Doesn't matter if it's something we learned to do a lifetime ago or it's something new. The idea is to have some fun and face time with nature or keep the synapses firing with a little mental gym in a table top exercise.
Here's how it will work....
People should make a post in this thread for skills or preparedness "challenges". After it looks like we've got a fair amount of ideas (maximum of 10), I'll put up a poll. Members can then vote on the challenge they want to see themselves and others perform. Depending on the winning item, a time limit will be set for the challenge to be completed.
Make the challenges serious.
Make the challenges realistic.
Be as specific as you can on your challenge. If you want to see (and do) bow drill fires with materials only found in the wild, then say so. If you just want to see (and do) a bow drill fire regardless of where the materials came from - that's OK too. Another challenge could be preparing a threat assessment for where you live, or a family disaster plan. You are only limited by your imagination.
If a challenge cannot be completed in all geographies (building an igloo) we'll address that as it rises.
Document your successes or failures in the thread that picks the challenge. Pictures or videos when possible. Let others know what went right and what went wrong.
I would hope that everybody that suggests a challenge participate in the winning challenge, even if it was not their suggestion. Everybody that votes should also participate. Naturally, all are welcome.
So - with that being said - let the suggestions of challenges begin.

I'm glad to see you maintaining this.
Find, and identify five native birds in your area. Seasonal fowl are fine. Give a description for each, long or short. The description could simply be sight and sound identification, but I encourage descriptors on just what the bird can tell you about the environment. "Boots in the field" is a must, and a "google-fu" supplement is welcome.

With all of the talk about BOBs and what to pack, I'd like to see people actually try carrying their pack for a 5 mile hike. Might make us rethink what we really need:
Take your existing BOB from wherever you store it OR pack a bag from any of the lists you see here or on the net and add 2 quarts of water to carry. Drive to the closest wooded park with trails and hike out 2.5 miles. Use your kit to make a fire with materials found at your site. Make a shelter with the materials you have plus materials found locally. Boil 2 cups of water and cook a meal on your fire. (camping overnight optional) Tear down your campsite and leave no trace. Hike back to your vehicle. Report back on what changes you would make to your kit.

It's your challenge idea, so you get to set the parameters (I like yours just fine), but keep in mind that not all BOB's are designed to survive in the woods.
I'll add......you set the parameters just fine - not implying they should be changed.

While I could decide what goes in the BOB, my thought is most of us have never carried such a bag, and load it up with everything including two knives, a machete, a full length axe, and a hunting dog. That's why I said either what you already have, or choose from some of the lists people have made. To me this is a way of whittling down, weeding out and fine tuning, then sharing your experiences. plus, you find out if you REALLY want to lug all of that stuff.
One thing to add, the entry should list the complete contents of their pack before the hike, then list any changes they would make.

Make a fire three different ways.
Nothing specific. You can use what you would normally carry or find in your area.
Matches, lighter, friction, magnifying glass, battery and steel wool, fero rod, etc.
You can use lint, petroleum cotton, Char cloth, Mayan dust, etc.
You can use a knife, saw, hatchet, machete, axe,...
It's more of a self challenge. List what you tried. Was it successful? What you would do different.
For example: I used a fero rod with char cloth. I used the char cloth in a bird nest of dried grass and jute twine to make a flame.

make a small fishing kit, get the boots in the field with the kit, catch fish, cook it in the field and use a edible wild plant as a side dish.

Not all of the challenges need to be "exacting". This allows participants to use their imagination and resources that are available.

These are, "The things we do alone, together". Throw away the script, go beyond the textbook. We/I need to grasp the moment, the circumstances. If it's a script that you crave........BushCraftUSA (http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/forumdisplay.php/132-BushClass-USA)........has a nice one.
Only 4-5 people have participated in the first two challenges. I suggested one this time that might get the keyboard junkies "off the porch", or at least least filming "off the porch".
I would consider it an accomplishment, as a whole, to see an increased quantity of participation.

Not nitpicking....then again maybe I am. Maybe I just need to know the intent of the water gathering. Tap water is easy, lakes and steams are fairly common, but take effort. Would I be following the intent of the challenge if I collected from my rain barrels? They're about as clean as a lake.

Or you could catch rainwater, or melt snow, or tap a cactus, or tap a birch tree, or collect dew. But then I've just given the game away, ah well... hey ho. And no urine was drunk in this post.

True, I have the advantage of having been a Nature Merit Badge Counselor for local boy-scouts, so I know the edible plants here very well. I didn't just know it up front, I had to do all that research you're talking about. I don't envy you in Utah though, I used to live there when I was little and still visit occasionally, and I don't remember seeing many plants that I would guess were edible, without a lot of prior knowledge. Perhaps this challenge could be incorporated with other ones?

One more idea, this one inspired by Wildthang and his daughter. Instead of going out and doing something on your own, the challenge is to TEACH someone at least one skill, preferably someone who has no experience in bushcraft, survival, or any type of outdoor living. You pick the person and the skill(s) and report back.

I Use to teach rope and knots in the rescue squad and you would be surprised how many ways there are to tie a double half hitch. This is one of the most used knots I think there is. Now I know there will be those that will argue with me but explore the many ways to tie them and you will I think you will agree with me. The winner would be the one with the most ways.

I'll have you know, that a while back I used up the last little bit of ham (nice and lean) by cubing it up and making pork fried rice.....with veggies and everything! Turns out that fried rice is pretty good......if you use bacon grease, instead of sesame oil.:chef:
