View Full Version : Thinking about going

Well folks, I've come to the site to ask for some advice. To put it bluntly, I've had a hard life up until this point and over the last couple of years lost nearly everything. Things were bad enough I was suicidal at one point, but I got some help, got through that. The situation that brought me to that point hasn't changed though, in fact it's gradually getting worse, and I need to get away.
Now, I've studied wilderness survival since the age of six. The books Hatchet and My Side of the Mountain were among my favorites as a child, and I've always felt more at home in the woods than anywhere else. I've spent weeks out in the forests, making camp, gathering food, etc. I've always came back though.
The point I'm getting to with all this is I want to make that jump, leave civilization behind, once and for all. The problem is I don't really know *where* to go. I've read up a lot and it almost sounds like, aside from purchasing a bunch of property, there isn't anywhere. That can't be true though, can it?. Considering that I don't even have $10 to my name, buying property just isn't an option. Do any of you know of a decent place where one could go and live off the land? I'm in Michigan but can travel. I was considering going as far as Alaska. Any suggestions?

Yes, laws have changed over the years and the demand for land has made the seller's realize that they can make money by selling it instead of giving it away!
Considering that I don't even have $10 to my name, buying property just isn't an option.
Neither is freeloading! Nobody gives land away, if they did we'd all be jockeying for position in line to get it!
Do any of you know of a decent place where one could go and live off the land?
I was wondering when another one of you folks would stop by....NOPE!

Ask Sourdough what land goes for in Alaska, he's a Realtor there. Oh, and BTW, good luck with that!

Short answer...no, not that I know of.....if was decent, someone would already live there and own it.
Good luck though.
My advice is to relocate somewhere else in-state and spend your time finding a job. I'm sure there free or nominal-cost counselling services in your state. You should contact them and arrange for additional counselling as soon as possible.

So you are looking for free land, free food, no rent, no responsibilities, no stress, no possibility of personal failure.
Good luck with that!.
Why do so many people equate wilderness survival with escaping reality?
I sugest going back for more meds.
All land is individual, corporate, government, crown (Canada), trust or tribal owned. In short, someone owns it. Crash is right. Seek professional help. You will still be you when you get where ever you are going. There is an old saying, "You can change the land under your feet but not the sky over your head," which means your problems will follow no matter where you go.

Do NOT come up here. Land, what land that is available for private purchase is expensive. Squatters tend to disappear... their make shift cabins burnt down. You don't know enough about the arctic or even subarctic to survive off the land here. Check out my thread, Alaska 2013. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?21545-Alaska-2013/page3

I'm noticing most of you ignored the "got help" line. Also, I'm not looking to run away from personal problems. I'm looking to get away from my living situation and from people in general, who I've grown more than cynical about for the most part.

Uh no, I didn't ignore the "got help" line. That's why I suggested "and arrange for additional counselling as soon as possible."
It also was pretty clear that you want out of your current living situation. That's why I suggested "relocate somewhere else in-state and spend your time finding a job. Leaving the state you currently reside in may disqualify you from receiving state assistance and the further counselling that you clearly need.
You've gotten some good advice from some pretty bright people here, and the semi-sarcastic responses are from those who have lost their patience with newcomers here who believe that they can escape from the realities of life by relocating to the wilderness. Ain't gonna' happen.

You've provided a group of complete strangers with such a wealth of information (yes that was sarcasm) regarding your situation and you really expect meaningful answers?
No, we didn't ignore the "got help" line - we just think you need more base on what you've provided. I certainly wouldn't expect you to go into detail regarding your situation, but you've got to admit - without knowing more - their ain't no quick answers.

Truth be told save a few years tax return and if you are as poor as you have said then you qualify, may already be receiving, various public assistance benefits. Just put single 0 on your withholdings and you will get almost all taxes paid in back. single guy so cut living cost, get rid of all the cluter since you will be moving to the wilderness you need practice anyway. scrape together all your saving after a few years 2 maybe 3 and buy some land. Then give it a go.

So...
What is your current living situation?
Are you working anywhere, where have you worked before?
How do you support yourself if you don't even have $10 in your name?
What is your education/skill level? What can you do...what would you like to do?
Are you physically healthy?
Share what you feel like sharing, otherwise, best of luck.

I'll recommend the same thing to you as I recently recommended to a friend. Look at North Dakota. There are jobs there from what I understand, and they pay well. Hard work, hard winters, but it's something. If you're truly broke, you won't make it in the wilderness without becoming a criminal, plain and simple.
The only advice you need:
Get a job, save, and then explore your options.

Alright, here's my situation. I was a fine dining chef for a few years, moved on to being a security guard, then decided to take some time off when the stress of it got to me, especially when combined with my personal life, which was falling apart (fiance left me, dad died, best friend died, everything I owned got stolen, and that's just the tip of the iceberg). I moved in with my Grandparents to try and chill out for a while, so to speak, and realized only too late that they needed a caregiver and I was stuck filling that role. That's basically where I am now, except they are both nursing home-bound and caring for them has financially crippled me. What savings I had are gone.
With everything that's happened over the years, I'm disenfranchised with the entire concept of modern living and especially the people.
To me, the idea of setting up camp in a nice forest somewhere and living a relatively unobtrusive existence with little to no human contact sounds perfect. I didn't mention it before, but I previously learned and have enough wilderness survival experience that I could practically teach courses in it. That said, if I could find a place, I'd probably be happy for the rest of my days. It's just a matter of finding that place...

I've had crap happen to me in my life as well. But the point is that I SURVIVED! That's the key word, "survive." Living off the land is much harder than people realize. You'll still need money. And it's a lot more work than what you've already been through! I know, when things get hard we like to sit back and dream about "getting away from it all." But that's what it is, just a dream. Chris McCandless had the same dream, and it killed him. If you can't survive civilization what makes you think you can survive the wilderness?....:sailor:

My guess is, and on some deep primal level I really understand...it's people who get in the way of surviving civilization. They make hard things harder. In the wilderness it's just you and the natural way of things as harsh as they may be. But it's somehow pure.

Just like homeless people seem to migrate to cities and live in the lower levels and tunnels, there are a number of folks who squat on public lands, deep in the National Forests. I know a guy who did this for several years. Eventually, he got lonely, and came back to civilization.

Just for once, I'm not going to take the Mickey.
So here's what you COULD do, legally in the USA, and on the cheap. I've just had a quick lookee, and most National Parks permit up to 30days camping in any one calendar year. So, here's what you do. Find as many National Parks as possible, in as small an area as possible, and use your maximum stay allowance in each one. I reckon, if you worked it right, you could stay out in the Wilderness for about 6months. I also reckon, by the end ofthat time you will be sick fed up of crawling out of a tent, or falling out of a hammock, or slithering out from under a Tarp, living on a limited diet and hauling water, dodging Bears, Rattlers, strange people and all your poisonous bugs. etc, etc. (OK, I lied, I did take the Mickey a little bit.)
If that's not what you want to do, then good luck with that. Oh, and just so you know, I live in England, and managed to find the info just fine.

I'll stay off the "Get Help" bandwagon, but I do think that this is a mid/early/late life crisis reaction. I think most of us here dream of living in a cabin in the woods. My wife and I have that as a retirement goal, with modern conveniences, of course :) But if what you really need is to get away from people and spend some time in the woods (which is always a good thing)...take a hike. Go camping for a week or two, fully prepared and loaded to live well. The weather is getting better this time of year and you can live in a tent, away from people, and decompress. Feel free to practice some survival skills like fishing, gathering (not hunting/trapping) shelter making and general woodcraft. But don't get stuck in a bad situation, unprepared while you do this.
Locally to me, I can do this in the Shenandoah National Park, with a free permit. Can't stay permanently, but long enough to get away. Also, long enough to realize how much I appreciate running water, company of people, showers, grocery stores, etc.
BTW, good on you to take care of your grandparents when they need you. It may not be what you bargained for, but it's the right thing to do. Karma has a way of coming around. You may not see it yet, but eventually you will.

I was a campus police officer for 5 years part time.
Worked Friday and Saturday nights from 12 midnight till 8 am.And this was after working a second shift job from 2:30 till 11:00.
Lost a girlfriend,gained a wife..long story.
I did this with the hopes of someday moving out of my apartment into a house. Was able to save 20% of the cost of my house.
Mission accomplished.
Life is tough. When you get lemons, sometimes you need to make lemonade.Even folks that live in the sticks deal with other people.

I'm currently rebuilding. I wasn't bashed like some people I know have been, but I hit an obstacle that needs to be circumvented before I can even look past it as far as a plan goes. So all of my planning is to beat this current obstacle, however, I do have the vision of where I'm going after (not the wilderness). Its very hard to move beyond where you are without a plan that addresses the problems. I stand by my advice of find a job, save money so you have cash for options, then explore those options.
I'm going to to be away all weekend, but I will offer the same thing I offer to most anyone, an ear. If you want to tell me more about your situation and I'll listen and offer what advice I can. I'm not a financial or life planner and I don't have a ton of experience in dealing with the chaos of life, but I have learned a thing or two from people I truly respect. Running away to the wilderness will not be part of any advice I give you.

Ok here are some resources for your area. You will need to call or search within these sites. There should be help for your grandparents if they are indigent (poor) and for you. What is happening with their SS and Medicare/Medicaid? You can research that easily at the library if you don't have a computer.
Also, have you thought about how HARD it will be on them when you just up and go? I know you have done the right thing helping but maybe God's plan was for YOU to be there when your Dad died and all the rest of the bad stuff happened to help you too. Sometimes, the Plan for us is not apparent (think of the underside of a tapestry -just tons of loose threads, but when you turn it over, an amazing picture). Certainly it is easier to be with family than on the streets when parents die, fiancs leave etc.
Not trying to preach, just to give you some ideas to turn over.
These area general help sites for your mental and physical health, senior issues for them, and other departments. Having done this before, call these places and ask for help. Most want to help you - some will have jerks on the 1st phone call but not on all of them.

I honestly think it would be easier to be homeless in a large city than out in the wilderness for most people. I saw people out in California camped out in areas between on ramps off the side of 405. They were there for months, and had quite a camp set up. Maybe you need to just go to California!

Being a little more specific may help.
Far too many show up here, and ask the same question...Where can I go to get away from the world and live?
Generally they have no skills, no gear, (maybe a big survival knife), but want to go to some area that has little of no resources that you can come by easily, or at least easy enough to not die, of exposure, starvation, or the wildlife (either that lack of or being attacked).
Short answer is "no where, for long"
Any one that has tried it knows that 95 percent of your time is spent finding shelter, food, water...and depending how much gear and supplies you bring with you (money) will determine how long you can last.
Nothing wrong with your dream, or desire, but you really need to look at this objectively and practically....Books and films are fine, but are not the true story.
Just grab what you can find around your house, and spend a night in your yard....and you will see how much is to "living in the wild"...and don't waith for a nice day, weather changes in a minutes 'out there"

Now this response says more than any of the others and indicates a couple of things.
1. Although there was a claim of "got help" the advice to continue to seek help was valid.
2. The need to get away from all people is different from what you previously described.
It's your life/party, so by all means do what you want. Running away does little good when you are the problem because you just take the problems with you. Good luck - I hope you figure out what you really want and are able to find it.

This might be a bit of a rant, but the problem isn't with me. Pretty much my entire life, I've put above-average effort into everything I've done, be it in the workplace, friendships, etc. Despite all that, about 95% of the people I've ever dealt with have taken advantage of me and treated me, to put it bluntly, like crap. Here are a couple of recent examples: My employer, whom I'd worked my rear off for, replaced me when I took a week off to visit my dying dad for the last time; My Cousin, upon hearing my dad had died, decided to ridicule and beat me down for being upset; Then shortly after a friend of over sixteen years (whom I was closer to than my own brother) called me a facist and ended our friendship when he randomly decided to change his political affiliation. I'm not even going to get started on when my fiancee left me.
I mean, honestly, I'm just tired of other people and their issues, especially when I'm the one who always seems to pay for them. I think my desire to get away from everyone is pretty justified.
That's called life. I'll let you in on a secret. Folks can only take advantage of you if you let them and they can only treat you like crap if you let them.
I'm sorry for the loss of your father and if I were you I would certainly have wanted to be with him. Employers don't always agree with employees taking off. That's just a fact of life. Find another job, hopefully one that's better than the last.
If your friend broke of the relationship then he wasn't a friend. You only thought he was. If he dumped you because of a political affiliation he was little more than an acquaintance in his mind. Friends, real friends, don't blow with the wind like that.
So, yeah, maybe the problem is with you if let people take advantage of you and you allow them to treat you like crap.

I can sympathize with hard times, as within a four-month timespan, my dad had a tremendous seizure, was hospitalized and diagnosed with a brain tumor (condemning him to maybe ten more years of survival if he was lucky), went in for surgery, was discovered to have an abcess (Better because he can still live a normal lifespan) but took much longer to recover due to this, which put my mother under tremendous stress, and due to this stress she generally alienated me and my sister from them, my sister ended up blacking out inexplicably and getting sent to the hospital, though she was fine, my dad had to go back in several times with breathing problems and several close-calls with another seizure, then was discovered to have an inflamed gallbladder, had to have that removed before it killed him, during which time my Grandmother's Alzheimer's worsened tremendously, and she eventually died, I was unable to come to her funeral, I failed two very important classes for my major, was dropped from the honors program at my university, had major relationship troubles and a savage breakup, and drove my blood-pressure up to 150/90, in spite of having a healthy weight and no medical conditions.
But you know what? I survived. Now, granted, I had some rough patches along the way, as does everyone. I think my major advantage was I had supportive friends who helped me through this. If you went it alone without any support, I can definitely see how you might feel you just want to be done with society as a whole. Trust me though, it does get better. It's harder without friends, but it does get much better eventually.
I wish you luck as you wait for life to improve. Just know that it will, and that you won't remember it being so hard, once you're out of this slump.

Not gonna beat you up on woulda/shoulda.
When my dad wanted to get away, he sold his house and used about $20k of it to buy a place down in WestBumFruckMiddleofNowhere Florida, a trailer with a good well on a couple acres of land. The land was already cleared for planting. For the use of part of an abutting acre, his neighbor tractor-plowed and tilled the rest for him. It was so cheap to live and he had chickens and a garden full of stuff that he could do it on his Social Security check. Other than that neighbor and a few trips to town every couple of months for supplies he lived there like a hermit until he got sick for the last time and passed away. I've talked about his neighbor a few times on here. The one whose wife who did the canning and they had a well-stocked pantry room full of home grown food and a freezer full of grass fed beef critter and home grown hog.
While you can't do it without money, maybe it isn't as much as you think. You would need some kind of skill to keep a cash flow going as I'm guessing you are not anywhere near retirement age. If you can farm enough for a truck market, there is that (until it is regulated out of existence) or perhaps you can find a diner that needs a cook or a restaurant that needs a chef.
Can you grow a garden? Can you butcher a cow? Or a chicken?
And on the subject of money, when it comes to the grandparents, you shouldn't be paying for their medical care out of your own pocket. Talk to a good Elder Care lawyer about the options available in your state for them. It may be too late, but it's the best $100 you'll ever spend. Been there. Done that.

Please everybody - while we may not agree with or understand the direction that the OP is going - it is his path to travel. He came here asking for advice. He's received honest answers from members. Some he may agree with. Some he may not. It is up to him to separate the wheat from the chaff and figure out the direction he wants to go.
I've deleted one post. PLEASE!!!! no personal attacks.

I think all of us here are adults, which means that we all are likely to have had hard times at one point or another. Survival is not the absence of difficulties but how you come out the other side of them. I don't think you have "survived" yet and still need to work on what you are going through. Running off to the wilderness wont get you to that other side. Working though your issues, whether in the company of people or not, is required if you are going to become a happy, healthy person. Running and hiding from them only delays the working through them portion of your life. Good luck.

I mean, honestly, I'm just tired of other people and their issues, especially when I'm the one who always seems to pay for them. I think my desire to get away from everyone is pretty justified.
In light of what you said, it is justified and I can hardly blame you for feeling that way. All I can say is, ride it out by minimizing being around people who treat you like crap...better yet, cut them off completely. They are toxic. Once you find a better job and meet nicer people, your outlook will change. Give yourself some time and don't give up trying any way you can.

My Grandmother died of Cancer at 72.
I never even knew my real father, my stepfather died at 58 due to being a diabetic and a chronic alcoholic.
My mother died of Alzheimer's at 63...I'm pushing 66.
My niece was killed in a car accident several weeks before her 18th birthday. I'd written the accident policy on her and the rest of the family that paid $10,000 to my brother.
My wife's sister was the victim of a horrible homicide at age 22.
I've been fired by anus bosses from more jobs than I can count.
My wife's health is so bad I don't have many close friends, and I hardly ever have them over.
My 1st wife left me for some guy just out of prison and took off with my two very young children. I didn't see my daughter until she was 17. At 38 I finally saw my son again.
I helped take care of my two in-laws when they went into the nursing home right up to their death.
Several years ago my best friend went in to see the doctor about a sore shoulder; he was diagnosed with inoperable bone Cancer and was given 6 months to live...he lasted 8.
In a perfect world this crap wouldn't happen, but it does. I never wanted to run off into the wilderness and be all alone, feeling sorry for myself. I'm a survivor, and the way I see it, people are lucky to know me. If they disagree...well, I could give a rat's rectum! I'm a survivor.....:thumbup1:

I really do not see what the problem is.
If the problem is not the OP but the rest of the human population then this person has a brilliant political career ahead of him.
He simply needs to change his name, apply to Colombia Law School, join the school law review staff and go from there. There is a good chance he could become president and punish all these bad people for what they have done.
Get free health care for the old folks.
Tax those bad bosses into bankruptcy.
Declare anyone that opposes you abnormal.
Put anyone that pi$$es you off on the terror watch list.
Problem solved!

That sounds familiar but I just can't put my finger on it LOL. And I don't really think the problem is solved.
Declare anyone that opposes you abnormal.
I'm for sure writing that one down.

Offering Kool-Aid is not allowed on these here forums mate. So don't get any funny Ideas.
However this exact same thing is not new, look at the bhagavad gita. The concept of Moksha, Jainist beliefs and Buddhism, even christian monastery life style. While man can never truly return to nature he can seclude himself and renounce the outside world to a degree. Join a monastery there are many, or a cult there are many (not the kool-aid kind) But others are rarely the problem. One should always examine oneself first for faults which may be corrected before attempting to correct external circumstances which flow and ebb outside of their power to affect.

c_anthony... why not approach this from another angle?
If your grandparents need care, and you've been a fine dining chef... why not consider becoming a chef for a retirement/nursing residence chain? Improving your employment options and also - potentially - getting a heckuva discount on care costs for your grandparents?
You could even work for the chain in a completely different city or state from the home your grandparents would be staying in... providing you both peace of mind and breathing space.

Not sure if this OP is still checking these forums, but here's my suggestion:
Post ads on craigslist offering your services to people with camps in remote areas. (Post in the states that have the biggest tracks of wilderness. Offer to "Fix up" or maintain hunting camps during the off season. You're bound to get a response. You wont be able to escape civilization entirely, but you would be able to go off the radar for a long while, especially if you line up different gigs in places with different hunting seasons. That is probably about as close as you're going to get to living in the wild, unless you go the Appalachian trail route. I've had your dream before, Been through crappy spots in life. You can run away if you want, but life wont be easier. Surviving in the wild isn't going to be easier, and you're gambling with your life, no matter what your level of knowledge is.
Good luck man!

I noticed that the OP has grown up and lives in a "wilderness" area now. There's no direction he could point that there wouldn't be a national or state forest close by. Intermixed with a few cattle farms and private forests. There are some possibilities of working at hunt camps off season. If he does go to Alaska, he would already be aware of what it would be like to be out in the woods. But, you can never get away from people unless you're a true hermit.
