Hypothetically, if a depression is on the horizon.......
How will the Average American family deal with their own need to
reduce spending? (Affects Canadians as well)
How will that reduction affect the Economy?
As I see it people are in a tight bind, they owe more than their car and their house is worth.
Gasoline and utilities are going through the roof.
Food prices are climbing too.
When John Q Citizen starts cutting back where will he cut back first?
in other words which industries will take the first hit.
My thoughts are in this order:
Cell phone companies and providers of Cable TV and Internet will take the first hit, along with land line phone companies.
Upscale stores will be next along with luxury sellers like Cruse lines and Air lines
Restaurants will take a big hit [very soon]
Auto dealerships will fall like dominoes!
New home sales will be dead for years!
You can forget the lake cabin and the ski resort will go tits up too.
RV and recreational dealerships...... yep toast!

Well....I don't owe more on my house and car than it's worth and I'll all electric so my utilities haven't budged...yet.
Your assessment is probably pretty accurate. It will depend on each person's needs as to what they consider luxury but retail will fall short in all areas except necessities (food or emergency medicine for example). Assuming that happens, of course...:rolleyes:

first to go 4 me would be the inlaws just cuz they smell funny....no but on a serious note it would cut my gas intake alot and raid the local food store and wait 4 the zombies

I am and will continue to cut back on gasoline, junk food, buying more guns(wife is right, I can only shoot one at a time). As of now I don't owe anyone for anything but I realize things could change. My ATV will spend a few weekends at home and I will postpone building a new addition to my workshop. I have the outside of the house maintenance free, all new windows, furnace and with any luck everything will last longer than me. I grew up on what we could raise or kill. Mom & Dad lived thru the great depression and they tried to teach me to be self-sufficient, I pray I learned something. I am ready for most repairs and if my health holds I should be ok.
We have already thought this out in our home.
Cable, gone. Don't really watch it all that much anyway. You can now watch tv on the net, kids can go to playhouse disney if they want to.
Trash pick up, gone.
Full cov. ins. on veh. already paid for, gone.
Eating out, gone.
Switch to super cheap phone service, already dumped the landline, gone. Sorry Verizon.
I will be killing critters again, deer, hogs, squirrels, rabbits, turkey, if it breaths, it dies and we eat it.
Heat will get turned down, sweaters will be worn, and I will mod. the fireplace to heat the house. I'll be chopping wood again.
We already do so much. We are a one income family, wife is a stay at home mom. She takes care of the kiddys, 1/2 the house, and the critters. She is awsome when it comes to shopping. I have seen her get 90 dollars of grocies for 15 bucks. Coupon mom is awsome, you just have to set up your way and do it.
We have cut back on gas, electric not so much. Late spring and fall we save a bundle, the transition periods, not so much.
We now have a freezer and have alot of frozen veggies and such. This comes in real handy.
We do follow the Dave Ramsey style of living and it works, just need to budget. I basically really want for nothing. What firearms I have anymore is all I need, the primitive style has eliminated alot, I mean alot of wasted money.
If we need say new sneakers, we can go down to the shoestore and pay a bundle, or we can go down to the shoe store, try on the shoes, find what we want then go online and get them at half price with free shipping and no sales tax. Hmmmmm.........great idea.
We like books, what buy them at retail, no way. Again, the net is awsome, sites like Amazon and a few others, again you pay a fraction of the cost, free shipping if poss. and no sales tax.
Honestly, if I woke up oneday and found out that I could not afford something for my kids or wife, I would sell all my toys, no problem. In a heart beat. ASAP. No thinking twice. I see friends who are in major debt, train wreck waiting to happen, we can't say anything, they don't listen, his kids need dental work, he drives a hopped up trans am, compl. paid for, also has a nice firebird, compl. paid for, they leased a big old gas burning 1/2 ton chevy half truck have suv and pay more for one payment than I did for two. They are missing morg. payments, utility payments, don't even open their credit card info anymore. They think that the co.'s will write it off.
I see major accident coming.
But I think, this is most of America. It's not us, but then we don't have any credit cards anymore, we pay cash, this stops immediate gratification spending.
Nice post, Frank. More folks should follow your example. It's not that difficult is it? It's just about being responsible and managing your resources. Good job, good values!!

you da man fvr, that dave ramsey is an awsome guy. i listened to him everyday for about 3 years before he broke thru my hardazz head and i finaily got on the ball. thanks to him i am in a much better position now than i was 5 years ago.

What station and time is his talk show? I'm reading his website now. Have you used any of his other products?
I believe it's 640am, he is on opposite of Clark Howard, another good money saver. He comes on around 3pm I think. He is def. on at 4, opposite of Sean Hannity.
I signed up for his free course for veterans, but did not have the time to use it in the time frame. Some of the guys at work have attended his classes at their local church's and enjoy them.
The class's puts you on the spot and from what I hear, you have homework. We wanted to do it, just don't have the time with my work schedule and the kids.

To Bragg's start of the thread "How will the average joe react to a depression", sadly I believe that is exactly what many will do - react to a depression (or any other calamity that may come their way) rather than prepare. Most participants of this forum have the mindset to prepare for stuff - wilderness experiences - general emergencies - even economic hardships. If more people prepared, there would be alot less panic.
Frank - If you want to fine tune that budget, keep a money diary for 30 days. Write down every penny you spend and what you spend it on. It will be one of those head slapping, "I can't believe this" moments. It takes a lot of discipline to keep one for 30 days but you and your wife will be shocked where the pennies go. The dollars are easy to track. It's the few dollars here, few dollars there that get you.

I have already dropped my car collision last year. But I don't drink or smoke so I can't cut down on those. I don't have cable or satellite tv or a cell phone, so I can't cancel those. I do have Netflix.
I'm simply saving my cash so when SHTF, I can get a bigger house. Even though my house value has dropped a lot, I'm not "upside down" on my mortgage because I put 20% down when I bought the POS (piece of poo).

Well, he'll lose his house, his job, perhaps his car, say "woe is me", and never think that it was HE who made the string of bad decisions that got him into this mess. He quit high school, guarenteeing him only low paying, unstable jobs. He bought the house with an ARM (one of the worst things you can do, next to getting a mobile home). He got a car that was too expensive, he bought too many material things looking for happiness.
A dollar might buy you fun toys but true happiness comes from inside.

Adjustable Rate Mortgages can be a valuable tool....you just have to know what they are and use them accordingly. I disagree with your comments on mobile homes. As with any conditions that you live, you need to know when to stay or when to go when the time comes (thinking weather here). Buying a house that you can't afford would be much worse IMO.
That crash is just a wealth of knowledge. No wonder subs run on New Clear Power.
I can show you a few good men that utilized an ARM to their advantage and made a small mint doing it. My former boss for one. Moved to D.C. knowing he was only going to be there two years. Bought a mega home on an ARM and sold the house two years later for almost double what he bought it for. Sweet deal for him. I don't happen to use them. I'm a bit too conservative for that.
Mobile homes are no better or worse than any other form of housing. Everyone chooses their type of roof for a variety of reasons. There are probably lots of folks on here that live in apartments. I never have and don't think I could do it. I'd be up on murder charges the first time some clod went stomping across my ceiling.

Buying a mobile home is only good if you never plan to move. It is impossible to sell them, because in 2-3 years their value is less than the mortgage. Since you cannot use the selling profit to pay off the mortgage you must come up with the difference yourself. At least that's the case here in Michigan (values drop fast). I relative of mine bought a mobile home so I have the actual number she was working with.

I don't believe the average person will make it. More folks live in cities or areas where they can't raise crops or animals. When they starve out they will head for the country and without any knowledge of how to survive they will fail. When I worked in large cities you could maybe eat pigeons, squirrels or rats for awhile, otherwise nothing except what you could steal. Without govt handouts you can expect to see riots and cities going up in smoke. I was in DC, stuck in a bldg for 3days in the late '60s and the next time they can start without me, I'm staying in the hills.

Folks that live in apartment complexes, apartment buildings or condos can garden just like the rest of us. Replace your house plants with containers that grow food you can eat.
Roof top green spaces are gaining wide notoriety in the cities because it actually lowers the temperature of the roof top and aids in cooling the building. Think about a black tar roof vs. a soft green roof full of vegetation. If enough folks roof top garden then the temperature in the city goes down and the quality of air goes up.
But indoor or patio container gardens are quite feasible and will produce an abundance of food.

First, I would never ever eat anything that grew up in a city (pigeons, squirrels, rats, etc) because of the high amount of pollutants in their tissues.
Next, I don't think a person could grow enough food in an apartment scenario, to feed their family exclusively by the garden. I have a tiny lot, and I have perhaps 800 sq ft for growing a garden and I seriously doubt I could grow enough food just for myself, if the garden was the only food source I had.
Anyone have any idea how many sq ft you need to fully sustain a person using a garden?
No matter where you live you must take into account how much pollution has tainted your water supply or food source, or even your soil you grow food in. Even old house lots, like my own, could be highly polluted because of different regulations that were in effect 50 or 80 years ago. I happen to live in the most polluted county in Michigan (Kent) and within walking distance of the 2 most polluted creeks in Michigan (Plaster creek and Buck creek). So using those as water sources is not possible for me.
Also keep in mind that some housing communities were built on garbage dump sites (like the one in Utica, MI I passed by when visiting relatives).

Bulrush - You are correct but remember that a vegan lifestyle requires less space than trying to rely on animal protein unless you are hunting animals. Here's a link that will show you in square meters how much land is needed.

But remember, we aren't talking about being fully self sufficient in an apartment/condo lifestyle. We're talking about supplementing what you can in the space you have. You will also need to have supplies set aside. Those folks that homestead don't rely 100% on what they can produce. They also need their stored goods and whatever protein they hunt.
As for pollution, that doesn't have to be a problem in a container garden. You can buy loam mixes for your containers. And....I posted a thread on how to make your own containers.

That Chicago rooftop garden was neat. Article said they covered and reinforced glass ceiling lights to support 60 pounds per sq foot.
I moped around the house for a few weeks. After a while I lost interest in keeping the place clean or personal hygiene. I'd stare at the tv for hours on end, but can't tell you what I watched, it was just so much pointless noise. I thought about calling a few old friends and maybe going out, try to cheer up, but then just sighed and settled back into my seat. They probably wouldn't want to and it'd just be boring anyway.
After a while, family members became concerned and booked me a doctor's appointment. He talked to me and checked my blood pressure and whatnot then prescribed something. I found the pills made me real tired, so I flushed them. Oh well....
Eventually, they came and gave me a free ride in the back of a shiny new ambulance and I've been staying here at Happy Acres ever since. The yard is really scenic and it's nice to just sit here by the window and watch the seasons changing in front of me. I think I'll go outside for some fresh air, or maybe tomorrow.
