I was getting my haircut this morning, and I said to my stylist, "I watched the video of the firefight in Watertown last night. Trained officers, SWAT Team - they must have fired 40 rounds and Suspect 2 is still alive. I can't wait 'till the next person tells me we don't "need" large capacity magazines for self defense."

So this woman sitting there chimed in, "I don't think people should be hunting with semi-automatic rifles."

I responded that most rifles are semi-automatic and explained the whole "one bullet for one trigger-pull" concept to her.

She said, "I'm talking about machine guns."

I informed her that automatic weapons were banned in 1934.

She said, "Those assault weapons."

I replied that it was clear to me that she had formed an opinion about something she knew absolutely NOTHING about.

She responded: "I Don't Want to Have this Conversation."

I smiled and said, "I understand. The facts must be awfully confusing to you."

AND THIS IS THE TYPE OF IDIOT WE HAVE TO TOLERATE.

The whole "assault weapon" terminology is a deliberate attempt to get people who are not into guns thinking that fully automatic weapons are available at the local WalMart. I rarely try to get someone to understand the difference between semi-automatic and fully automatic because it is rare that someone doesn't know, but wants to know.

The good news is that more people seem to be purchasing guns and figuring it out for themselves.

Obviously the LEO's have "Long Guns" which are good whiile the alleged bombers "may have assault riffles" which are clearly bad.

That's the advantage of being at the University: everyone is almost begging you to challenge their views, and have a battle of logic. When you have hard facts to present to someone whose impression of firearms comes from the major media, the looks of enlightenment abound. I haven't turned anyone pro-gun, but I've gotten many people to dismount the strongly anti-gun bandwagon. I also cleared up some impressions about gun use in firefights. "Why don't people just hold their guns out of cover to shoot in gunfights, rather than poke their heads out and risk getting hit?"

Great post, but the number of crimes prevented is hundreds of thousands into the low millions depending on what study/estimate you prefer. I wish there were stats on that specifically with ARs. Unfortunately, I have never seen anything like that broken down by type of weapon.

The figure I used was conservative, as it is not uncommon to find someone who opposes me on this issue with data to the contrary, saying "MSNBC SAID THIS" or "CNN DID A STUDY" and they of course are skewed to the small end, just as studies by pro-gun groups are skewed to the large. If someone calls you out, even with a lousy stat, it makes you look bad, whether or not your facts are good.

What about all of the crimes that are dissuaded by the threat of firearms and it never gets reported to be included in statistics? It happens.

The "victim" sees what is about to happen and pulls their gun and tells the bad guy to haul ***. The bad guy hauls *** and no one ever reports the incident.

I had something close to that happen 10 years ago or so. I was working on a sign off of a step ladder and my gun kept flashing inadvertently when my shirt rode up unintended. At the time this was against the CCW law in Florida. So, I took my holster off and finished the job. I was putting my handgun back on in the door of my truck when a guy who was dressed like a mug shot made a sudden bee line straight at me with his hand in a Walgreens or a CVS bag. He came off the sidewalk through the grass straight at me and quickly that it really sent my hairs up. He said something to the effect that he needed money. I had my hand on my gun because I was still putting my holster on. I said something to the effect I got nothing for you or nothing you want.

I guess he figured out what I had my hand on because his breaks went on and his hair went up (my guess that his face looked like mine a second before) and he bee lined out of there.
