"limit an individual's total balance across tax-preferred accounts to an amount sufficient to finance an annuity of not more than $205,000 per year in retirement, or about $3 million for someone retiring in 2013." :splat:

I actually support there being a cap, but I prefer it be set at 1 million a year, not $200K, because arbitrary as it may be, it's comfortably beyond the median in even the wealthiest parts of the country, and I guess I do bleed a little "red" so to speak, but I still think people ought to be allowed some degree of wealth and opulence in their retirement. It's only excessive riches that bothers me.

Pay no heed, I'm in college, it's probably just the liberal school-system getting to me

There should be no limit to what you are able to save if you earned it. Even "excessive" wealth.
It drives me insane when the bank calls me to tell me there has been no activity in one of my accounts for over 6-months. Yeah. It's because I'm saving the money. As in not spending it.
You'd think a bank would like that kind of account rather than one that fluctuates.
I told em next time they call, I'll close the account.

I had an account I forgot about, one day in the mail I had a check from the bank along with a letter stating that since the account was inactive for over 12 months they closed the account.

And how much did they charge you in inactivity fees?

Why should "excessive riches" bother anybody? What business is it of anybody how much money somebody else earns and saves, especially the government?

Who determines what 'excessive riches' are? You? Obama? Your neighbor that's been coveting your new car?
Why one million? It's just as arbitrary as two hundred thousand is it not?

Let me give you three scenario's then you tell me honestly if the people should be 'taxed' for the material goods they put back.

I know a guy that technically started work at the age of 9. Had a masters degree before he was 18 in materials science/metallurgy. When he turned 18 he hit the road working. That work took him to some very hosed up places, but to meet his retirement goals, it was the only option for someone that technically started out poor. He worked eighty plus hours a week as the 'norm', ranging up into the one hundred hour weeks on a frequent basis. In that time of working, he got shot twice, stabbed three times, burned, robbed, kidnapped by FARC, and in general had a hell of a time (not to read as a good time) in places most would pizz their pants at the thought of living and working in them. Thats the light end of what this guy had to deal with.

In amongst that, he created three companies over those years employing nothing but Vets. When the companies got on their feet, he sold them back to the employees at his cost.

Now he's chilled out, has a loving family, and is semi retired. His net worth is considerably higher than most people his age as he's meet his retirement goals 4 years ago, but he doesn't show it off with fancy cars, huge houses, bragging etc. choosing rather a modest life style that is free of debt, but the wealth is in fact there should it be needed. He intends to pass as much of it off to his family as he can as given his life, he knows it's highly unlikely he'll end up on the long end of the life expectancy scale; In fact, he considers all of his retirement as belonging to his eight year old son and his aging wife who is very likely to need it far more than him.

This guy is not alone, there are others like him in the country and world who worked their arses off to make a better life for their family. Most not quit as dramatic as his, but in their own way, just as hard, and just as rough.

Then there are those that served their country directly, parlaying that service afterwards into careers that were lucrative, and in some cases highly lucrative.

I know of one in particular that served 20 years on submarines who got his degree in nuclear engineering while in, that is now making large dollars at one of the multinational energy companies. He has a lot of health problems like the first guy due to that service. Yet he keeps plugging at it for the same reason as the first guy. He knows his time is short, but he has a good family that depends on him. He like the first, considers everything he's put back to be a start for a better life than his for his two children, and support for his wife when he passes away.

I know another that spent 18 years in spec ops; He'd still be in if they'd let him, but he lost an arm/eye and a whole team in a place he can't talk about after that team was shot out of the air so they canned him. He is now a security consultant for one of the large multinational insurance companies making very large figures. If he were to open up to you, he'd tell you the only reason he wouldn't wish it was him pushing up daisies instead of any member his team during that unspoken event, is because he has four children and a wife that very much love him. Like the first two, he knows his time is short and he knows they need him to keep going while he can.

Now the potus and apparently you want to tell these men that somehow they should be paying more because they have more. That there is some magic number that is simply unfair for any one person to own without paying more in. That those lining up at the welfare office should get more of their bloods work than what they already are getting. When I say bloods work, I mean they bleed heavily to get what they got literally and figuratively.

I dunno but I am pretty sure those guys would tell you to go **** yourself, they've paid enough to the world and society already.

We are not talking about not being able to save beyond a certain threshold. We are talking about doing so tax deferred. There's a huge difference. I have not been able to find the full text of the President's budget proposal but how much you save tax deferred is very much within the government's control.

I told you guys two years ago that tax increases and a reduction in services lay in our future. It's the only way to pay down the debt. I also said not much is going to happen in this administration. Nothing to do with party it's just that the President and Congress don't have to act. The next administration will be much different. We will be bumping up against the 2020 threshold and you can bet things like this will become reality. It's just one more way of raising taxes.

I don't think this particular measure stands any chance of passing the Senate. As I said, they don't have to...yet.

No doubt.

Obviously your professors, their teaching assistants, and probably your high school teachers have instilled in you that great egalitarian dictum: "To each according to his need, from each according to his ability."

Kinda wondering how would you define "opulence," and "degree of wealth," for retirees??

And by whom in the Government would that definiton be made??

Actually, no. I don't think my anything is safe, thus, my interest in survival strategies. I have a little less than 6 years before I retire. A lot can happen in 6 years.

Well, that was about as much backlash as I expected :tabletalk:

I understand the desire to not be beholden to anyone else, especially the government. I hate that the government is a necessity, and wish that human nature was such that we could function in harmony without the need for centralization of any power.

As far as "excessive wealth" and the arbitrary nature of the number I provided, you're right, no one has a right to decide that. And yet, I do wish there was cultural pressure (not legislation) to invest one's extra capital (beyond a certain level of course, as people are entitled to being wealthy if they've earned it, it's more the $500 caviar and private-jet types I find disagreeable) into institutions and foundations that create extra opportunities for others to raise themselves up. I certainly don't support the Wellfare State, as people should have to work to succeed, but if someone needs to pull three jobs to feed their family, and doesn't have time to go back to school, they are kind of stuck. Universities cost literally 50X more (inflation adjusted) to attend today than they did in my grandparents' day. It used to be that one's car loans were the second biggest and longest lasting debt incurred after your mortgage, but now I'm seeing fellow students graduating with mountains of debt that rival even mortgages. Yes, we could just not go until we had enough money, but with the way degree-inflation has run in this country, one's financial station is relatively stagnant until AFTER you get a BA.

And this is the part where I recognize that the above is sounding rather political, sooooooooo here's some non-political stuff: :sneaky2:

Seems like investing your savings in non-monetary items that appreciate value with time is the safest bet. The government can't tax ammunition, for example. Well, they can, from your cold dead fingers, but that's a different story :innocent:

Furthermore, hard physical assets, though harder to liquidate, are probably more secure in that they can't be lost through fraud, cybercrime, or systemic crash. And, if worst comes to worse, those firearms, vehicles, tools, supplies, general "preps", all of them will allow you to retire no matter what happens to the world around you.

To all those I offended with my previously extreme and polarized post about "excessive" riches, my apologies. I don't hate the wealthy, I just dislike the wealthy who are overly stingy. Being an aspiring businessperson, but seeing all the self-interest that is rampant amongst my peers, I can be more sensitive to this issue than normal.

And good luck with your retirement funds everyone. Some people invest in their 401, but I think it would be wise to supplement that with investments in your 308. :m107: Regardless of how much you earn in life, we all deserve to be comfortable in our later years, especially when we all work so hard in our youth. WolfVanZandt makes the excellent point that nothing is really safe if it's all on paper, and an emphasis on survival knowledge is important, because all the resources in the world can't make up for ignorance of how to use them.

Is the administration being a pain to be this invasive? Sure. Can we make it through? Yup. We should take a hint from our Russian friends perhaps: "Regimes fall every day. [We] tend not to weep over that..." Either life will get better, or it will get worse and then get better later. Never has it ever just gotten worse for everyone and stayed that way, so I feel pretty good about things, and have faith that things will improve eventually.

Dear Mods: if this is too political, please don't banhammer me, just slap me around a little in PMs, and I promise to behave. I love this forum, and wanted to respond respectfully and engagingly to the comments people made on my views. I'll do what I can to keep hard politics out of our discussion. Thanks!

We don't use the "ban hammer" for disagreements like some places do. While I disagree with much of what you offered regarding wealth, you - along with everybody else are entitled to your opinion. That is what leads to discussion, and hopefully some independent research to either reinforce or modify opinions.

I guess I misread the initial post. And since I don't want to be in a tax-deferred situation, I've been actively attempting to convert a dormant 401k from a former employer to something post tax that pays taxable dividends instead. I don't even want to think what the tax rate on a deferred 401k will be in a few years...

If someone with money wants to buy $500/oz caviar, I don't care. That means the money goes back into the economy. The guy that makes the caviar is getting paid. Same with the jet.

There should be no law to force anyone to do anything, especially when it comes to earned income. That the govenrment already takes 30% of what I earn (or more) is bad enough without you or anyone else thinking I should 'contribute' to Social programs if I were rich enough to be able to afford such a thing. Who are you to say I should HAVE to take a chance on throwing bad money after good.

There are Givers and there are Takers. And then there are those that just want to be left alone.
And your Russian example...I'd ask the average citizen therenabout the truth of that statement. I think you'll find there's "bad," and then there is "less bad".

Your suggestion that taxes will be higher on future earnings is on the mark and many believe that sheltering taxes for the long term is not necessarily the right thing to do. However, consider that your salary will continue to grow placing you, at some point, into a higher tax bracket(s). The income you make today, and the taxes you pay as a % of income is most likely going to be higher today than after you retire. So instead of paying taxes on the 30% bracket you are in today you may be paying taxes on a 23% bracket (as an example) post retirement. The cloudy part is not knowing with any certain what your future earnings are as well as what future tax rates will be. All things being equal, the above would be true.

As to that 30% bracket and government: The money I pay toward all levels of government provides me with an outstanding military, roads, bridges, sewers, libraries, schools, et al. I reap the benefits of taxation ever day so I really don't mind paying taxes.

Every financial decision involves risks. One of those risks is political risk. Get used to the idea.

In this state Rick there is a tremendous amount of waste and no transparency. I'm all for paying taxes, but it needs to be going to the right places. The number of smaller roads closed here because bridges are unsafe is too high. The roads themselves are in a sad state of repair. Even when they do repave the highways, they are obviously using crap paving because in some places they are paving again. The police departments are not properly funded and usually understaffed. The Big Dig in Boston went 14 BILLION over budget, it leaks and lighting fixtures and ceiling panels are continually falling on motorists.

Yes, we do have libraries and schools (though some of the schools need new roofs) But they also just considered raising our tax rate from 5.25 to 6.25 in order to pay for more stuff. They didn't do it, but instead pounded us with a 1billion dollar bailout of the transportation system here funded by a gas tax increase and a tax on cigarettes. Despite having received millions in Stimulus funding for same.
The Dole (welfare, EBT, etc) is out of control here too.

And quite honestly, I haven't received any sort of substantial raise in over 5 years, certainly not COL. I'm not too worried about my tax bracket at this moment in time. I'm lucky to be employed.
