I don't think this is any big revelation in the intelligence community. I'm sure they've known all along what N. Korea's capabilities are or are not. If you remember, Secretary of Defense Hagel said in March that he was going to increase the U.S. ballistic missile defense along the west coast and Alaska and cited the N. Korean KN-08 missile as one of the reasons for the move. Why would he have been so concerned in March if there wasn't some credible threat? There are already, apparently, a large number of Patriot batteries in use by the US in Korea as well as by the Koreans and Japanese. That would be in addition to the Aegis warships.

I am no expert on North Korea. It is my impression however that the Kim dynasty has maintained such a tight grip on the people and their access to an indepedent press, that it makes it nearly impossible to predict how they might respond in any given situation. Until recently, it has been largely irrelevant. For they lack the technology and equipment to offer much of a sustained militarily threat. Sure they might get a cheap shot now and again on some unsuspecting ship or island, but they would surely experience catastrophic losses in any prolonged conflict with a modern military force.

The status quo has recently experienced a major shift. This irrelevent nation with it's lunatic leadership might now have the capacity to initiate a regional, if not global, nuclear conflict. Reacting like a cornered animal in a cage, they may feel the need to strike out regardless of their chance of success in some last ditch effort to survive.

Compromising our ability to respond decisively is the fact that we still have some 25,000 US service personnel and untold numbers of American expatriots on the Korean penninsula. South Korea is a major ally in the region and has a population of some 50 million people. How would the Chinese react if we were to make a preemptive strike? This has the potential to get ugly real quick. Who knows? Hopefully calmer heads will prevail.

I wasn't trying to imply that interceptors were the answer only that they were in place for a reason. I doubt if Tuvalu announced that they planned to nuke the U.S. that missile batteries or anything else would be moved. That fact that we are taking defensive actions seems to imply the intelligence community has some knowledge that they have not shared.

As to attacking N. Koreas nuclear facilities, that's a genie that we don't need to let loose. I'm sure China would be unsympathetic to a massive radiation dump on their door step. Remember, too, that Russia has a small border with N. Korea so they would probably have some misgivings about radiation drifting in their direction.

Sometimes a scalpel accomplishes more than a shotgun. My money is still on Chuck Norris.

Absent an all-out air and ground war, which no one wants to see repeated, I can think of only two ways to accomplish this:

The first is multiple simultaneous Spec-Ops missions, and I can't envision this option having any reasonable probability of success.

The second, and by far most viable, is a multiple simultaneous submarine missle attack, with perhaps some Stealth Bomber and Fighter attacks as well, on all of N.K.'s known nuclear sites. I don't know of many allies in that region with the capability to pull that off.

N.K. has threatened S.K., Japan, and the United States.

Kim Jong-lunatic may have painted himself into a corner. It's possible that if he demonstrates indecisiveness or weakness he will be replaced with a high level North Korean bureaucrat or senior military officer. His best chance at maintaining internal control may well mean he has no peaceful exit strategy if the South Korean-American alliance doesn't offer his administration some face saving concession. Anderson Cooper/CNN did a story on a north Korean man who was born in a prison camp because his uncles had done something to provoke the government years before. The North Korean's employ a policy of three generation internment. It is a chilling expose of the brutal means the leadership will engage in to maintain their tight-fisted control over the minds of their dominions. I fear the only way to rationalize with irrational people is the primitive use of brute force.

I see a major distinction between Japan at the end of WWII and North Korea today.

Japan had lost most of it's offensive capability and was concentrating most on defending its own relatively isolated island chain. We had been firebombing their cities for months, and the atomic bomb was our only option other than to land troops and suffer tremendous losses. Japan didn't have the ability to strike with conventional or nuclear missles.

North Korea has not suffered any of that type of "pre-BOMB" punishment. We are not out to conquer N.K. - we are out to destroy their nukes and, hopefully, their WMD's. They are assumed to have the ability to launch nukes on missles. They also have tens of thousands of WMD's poised along their border with South Korea, just waiting to be launched or fired by artillery at Seoul and a host of other military/civilian targets. I see it as a completely different scenario.
