As part of the garden prep I am cleaning ground hogs out of the fence row on the back of the place.
Got one this afternon that I have been chasing through the snow for weeks!
I caught him sunning on the fresh grass in the field behind the house. True case of "you snooze, you loose!"
Now my lettace and cabbage is safe.

Grounhawg makes good moccasins,skin it and use that leather. Unless of course you used the Mosin on him then forget about it.

I am at the house so I spare the neighbors frayed nerves and use the .22, even though it seldom gives clean kills. One shot from a .22 does not raise eyebrows or interest.
I did consider using the '06 with some reduced loads but the school buss had already run and I did not want to have every kid on the road down here wanting to know what I shot!
This is KY and people run to the shots, not away from them.
The kids around here have rifle scabards on their bikes for proper transport of their BB guns. If someone is shooting they want in on it!
The judges daughter, she's 10, did jump on her bike and come see if I had killed one of the coyotes that have been plauging us. She wants them dead so she can ride her bike after dark.

as a herbivore, groundhog is good eating. Far better than any possum I ever ate.
Rocks are better than possum....and less greasy too.
Groundhog and Sweet Potatoes
Ingredients:
1. Groundhog
2. Cold water
3. Salt
4. Pepper
5. Sweet potatoes or white potatoes
6. Cornbread
Instructions:
Dress the groundhog as quickly as possible, and let soak for several hours in cold, salty water. After the meat is cold, you can trim any excess fat. Parboil to remove any remaining fat. Drain well. Place in oven at medium temperature with potatoes. Season the meat with salt and pepper and bake until brown.

The porch gun at "The Place" is a Handi Rifle in .223......they just fall over, average shot is about 120 yds +/-...they tunneled under the shed, and wood piles....got a couple last year, but they are still around.

I really don't have that many issues, I just live in the country where the critters happen to live.
It's like living in a neighborhood with a lot of kids, you expect a few kid related issues as they screw up and you kick their butts through the learning experience.
Only difference is you can shoot the groundhogs and racoons and not go to jail,,,, usually.
I really need to clean out the coyotes. They are at danger level.
I am not about to jump on these big dogs with a .22. I built something for them over the winter that needs a couple of finishing touches. I can deal with that tomorrow at the range.
I have that piece of real estate pretty much to myself these days. One nice thing about the ammo shortage.

I shot it with the .22.
It spun around four of five times, did a back flip, stood on its hid legs and fell over backwards like a bad guy on Bonanza, then crawled off toward the brush.
That's when I poped it the second time and it stood up and threw a rock at me.
I had to dodge the rock and it got into its hidy hole before I could get off the third shot.
I have not seen it out again so I am declaring it dead!
If I had not been 100 yards away in my sniper hide, and he had decided to charge after the first shot, I might still be running.
The only reason I used the .22 was the noise factor. If the government had good sense I would have had a supressor on a .38spl rifle and not had the problem to deal with.
We had a neighborhood meeting down by the pond yesterday and agreed that if anyone saw a coyote the noise of a HP rifle would be acceptable too one and all. One nice thing about my neighborhood, if there is a shot everyone comes to see what you killed with the attitude that something must have needed killing, not that the shooter did something wrong.

That is how it SHOULD be everywhere, unfortunately we have a society that has been infiltrated by people who always want to see someone hung. Sad, really.....:hang:

That is a nice neighborhood to be in. Around here thay are normally too busy shooting to even think about what i shot! Everybody shoots around here!

This is at least the 10th time I've caught this little beggar. My wife calls him Stockholm, after the syndrome. I've opened the door but he usually sits right there for several hours - probably hoping I'll re-bait the trap. He seems to have a real weakness for her etoufee.

Yep, and I have repeatedly said that perfect shot placement on a moving target at 100 yards is a myth perpetuated by tin can shooters and indoor range operators.
The rifle I was using is capable of about 1 1/2" @100 from a rest, at the range and under ideal conditions.
My conditions are spotting the animal from the back window of the house, running out the front door and around the side, slipping across the open section of the yard without being seen, using the utility trainler for a rest as I try to calm my breath, still my heartbeat and pull down my blood preasure and find the critter through the brush screen he is hiding behind. If a bird flew or a blade of grass moved while all this was going on the critter is now moving toward the brush line or into the thicket.
Shot placement is hitting the piece of fur you can get into the scope in the 3 seconds you have before the critter is gone and hiding for another day. If it was a 200 pound 2 legged varmit intent on meaness I would have been in danger.
I only have until the grass starts growing to clear the ground hogs out. Once the grass is taller than they are the shooting is over. They have to be gone before I plant my garden, So you take the shots you can get, not the perfect shots of gun book, shooting range and underpowered cartridge lover fantacy.
Dead now or dead down in his hidy hole a day latter serves the same purpose for me with the varmits. If it was food I needed I would be real hungry right now.
In the broad scope of things I'm doing real well! Last I checked it was taking 50,000 rounds to hit an Iraqui or Taliban insurgent and they are much bigger targets than a ground hog!
And everyone wonders why the government is buying up so much ammo!

I have considered it but he's just so dumb I'd feel bad if I did. I've removed several already, but this one is just SO stupid...:wacko:

You do know that no matter where you drop them off at they come back!!! I removed some from a lady's house once and she paid me extra to take them by the lake and let them go. OK no problem, 4 days later get a call from her , she has "2 more" in her house again, And again here is an extra 20 take em and let them go with there friends. I could of road that train a few more times but I cant take money from stupid people more than twice!

Yeah, the ones I 'removed' never came back. .22 between the runnin' lights. Same for several coons who liked to ride down my corn.

I do have a problem shooting the 'g-hogs" in front of the tractor tire, and they know it......as my luck would be a 300 buck tire, and a'hog laughing at me.
I not above shooting them in a trap, if nessessary.....the dead ones don't come back......unless they are...........Zombies.
OK here is one right up there with "shot placement'.....and "any thing on the planet"....
Use FMJ as it leave a hole on each side, better blood trail.....What is up with that!(saw that on a hunting forum, didn't comment)
What happed to "dead right there", no blood trail, the just fall over.
